Is Wi-Fi tether still disabled on T-Mobile for Android version 4.4.3?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Premium HD app
It was disabled on 4.4.2? It worked for me then on stock ROM. I'm on 4.4.3 I'll test and get back to you.
Edit : on 4.4.3 rooted stock I set my mobile AP on my Nexus 5 to WPA2 and used my Kindle Fire to load Google.com and it worked. I have T-Mobile LTE and 1.5GBs of tethering allowance on my account.
In short, its not blocked on 4.4.3 nor was it before.

Are you referring to tethering while using a T-Mobile plan that does not have a tethering allowance on it? I am looking into this too. I have only been able to get the "free 100MB tethering" that is included with my Unlimited for $30 plan with T-Mobile. Now that I have flashed the factory image for 4.4.3, I am going to try tinkering around with this again.
always has worked here, no tinkering.
Look up the previous thread/topic for tethering block - simple "edit" to settings.db using (free App) dSQLiteManager, save changes & move back to /data/data folder per instructions - after making backups, exit & reboot and good to go. Change APN settings to IPV4 and not IPV6.
The new T-Mo UpSell screen pop-up gone & profit / enjoy ! Stock's rom built-in WiFi Hotspot works fine - the restrictions is on T-Mo's end.

theres tethering included in every one of their plans with data, so paying for it shouldnt be the issue. op just cant connect.

Technically, you are right.
I'm fairly sure the OP is talking about getting around the upsell page after using up the 100 MB of tethering included with the prepay $30 Unlimited plan.

Dunno. The built-in tethering has always worked for me, but I would quickly hit the 100 MB limit. Works here, Nexus 5 running 4.4.3 on T-Mobile. Especially after adding the settings.db.
Yes, I'm talking about using Wi-Fi hotspot without using settings.db and changing the APN. I had to use this method in order to use wi-fi hotspot when I was on 4.4.2. I'm just wondering if this method is still required on 4.4.3 in order to use wi-fi hotspot on T-Mobile if you're currently not on their wi-fi tether plan.

I don't think those settings are required anymore, even with the $30 prepaid plan. After a clean install, I was about to do the tether_dun_required/IPv4 changes as before, when I realized that USB tethering was running fine out of the box. Either Google, or T-Mobile (more likely) fixed the issue.

i just flashed the blackhole rom and all i can say is wow. it is incredible, so much cooler than some of the other ones ive found. but anyways im rooted and i was wondering what a good wifi tethering app to use is. obviously a free one that i wont have to pay ridiculous amounts of money for each month on my bill if i use it
Good luck with that. Most carriers are trying to crack down on this theft...check the market place they are there
Speaking of tether I have three questions.
1. If you start using a ridiculous amount of data you think vzw would catch on and try to charge you for it?
2. When vzw transitions to tiered data, they can't modify your plan if you currently have unlimited data can they?
3. Does vzw throttle data at a certain point?

1. probably if ur in the top 5% of users of data
2. no they cant. you are grandfathered in
3. not the 4g. i heard of people saying they used 40, 65 even 80 gb and they did not get throttled or cut off.

these phones can use quite a bit of data themselves. I think most of the apps use the "stealth" type of tether where verizon would have to guess that you were tethering based off of overall data usage.
verizon can throttle you. According to their policy, they will throttle the top 5% of data users, esp during peak times so as to not effect their network.

1. If you have unlimited data, then it wouldn't matter. If they can't prove you tether, then they can't charge you.
2. If you have unlimited data, you will be grandfathered into unlimited until you change your plan.
3. I've heard reports that they do and don't. I have never noticed being throttled, but I don't use a lot of data.
Verizon will soon be able to detect tether users. If you ever get an official update to your phone, say goodbye to tethering. Also google is starting to restrict downloads of tether apps to certain carriers, and you can bet verizon will be one of them.
Tethering days are numbered.

To find Wireless Tether on the market, you have to go into Airplane mode, enable WiFi and then search for it there.
or simply go to this website

Those of you saying that VZW can't change your data plan/charge you extra and can't detect tethering are fools. The valid question is not whether they can do these things, it is a matter of whether they care or not. Right now I'm sure that they don't. The future is always an unknown.
I wonder if its downloaded through the phone if VZW would have record of it somewhere?

I've used that particular tethering app on various phones successfully in the past, and am in fact tethered with it over my Droid Charge (with version 3.1 beta). On most phones it's shown as an ad-hoc connection, not a real "access point" or "hotspot" like it does with the official tethering app. (The Charge right now is showing as an ad-hoc device, not a real wifi ap.)
Which version are you using on the Thunderbolt? What settings? I tried it this morning on the TB with 3.1 and while it appeared to work and connect as a real hotspot with the laptop, the laptop couldn't get any connections beyond the TB. I had everything on "auto".
Any hints/tips appreciated.
The connection right now for me on the Charge is more stable than with the official hotspot app...and it was the same with the official app on my Thunderbolt. I've posted youtube videos of both phones being used as a hotspot where the mobile data connection keeps flickering off, sometimes as rapidly as on for 5 seconds, no data for 5 seconds. It was maddening. Yesterday I had to pull out my TMobile Nexus S and use it's CM7 hotspot (which shows as a real access point, btw) to get a useable connection to the web.
Seems like the VZW official offerings aren't very stable.
I use the Wireless Tether 3.0 beta but you have to go to settings and click hTC routing fix for it to work.

Thanks! I missed that one in the settings. I also had to change the Device Profile from Auto to Generic, but now I'm tethered on my MacBook via the Thunderbolt, and it shows as a real access point.
I have been using wireless tether for root users on Das Bamf 3.0 RC4 with MR2 radio and have not had any drop issues thus far.

And then download widget to one-click turn on hot-spot.
Because it takes like 4 clicks/menus to turn it on normally.
By enabling the above hotspot how does/can AT&T verify I'm tethering? I'm on the unlimited (throttled) plan and really don't want to be switched.

Yes, they can, I got the nasty gram recently (actually the second one).
I was honest and told them I was tethering a laptop, I suspect that honesty is what got them to put me back on my unlimited.
We are not exactly sure how they are detecting tethering, there are a number of ways (using the TTL for example, it decreases as it passes each network device on the path to the destination, ATT expect a certain TTL value when it comes from a phone, when it comes from a tethered device, that value will be 1 less). Other methods involved deep packet inspection, where you can identify that network address translation is taking place.
Also, apparently the iphone tags tethered packets or something.
To get around this, run openvpn (you will need a vpn server somewhere as well), and tunnel all your traffic through teh VPN server... The only thing ATT will ever see is an encrypted tunnel between your phone and the vpn server and nothing else.
There is alot more to it, but it works.

Your on a tiered plan, they would encourage you using data, because then they get money from you.
They watch unlimited data users like a hawk, but that's why I use a VPN to encrypt my data, have fun figuring out what I'm doing.

I recently discovered Android Wifi Tether, the first stable, functional and reliable app that creates an infrastructure AP so I can tether my Kindle Fire. The only problem is when I activate tethering, in the status bar I get the yellow Wifi Tether icon flasing by then a moment later, I get a smaller blue icon that says "Tethering or hotspot active". This is the same message that comes from T-mobile/2.3.6 ROM that says you're using their (pricey) builtin hotspot feature. When I go into Settings - Wireless- Tethering -Mobile AP settings the Mobile AP is grayed out and it says "Error" underneath it. With Wifi Tether off Mobile AP is not grayed and can be checked on/off. I don't want to get charged for tethering my KF!
Does anyone know how to setup Wifi Tether to not trigger the builtin hotspot feature -- or if it even does?
Specs:
Samsung Galaxy S4g mostly stock rooted 2.3.6
Android Wifi Tether 3.1 beta 11 (latest one as this moment). I'm using Samsung Galaxy S profile and for setup method I've used both Auto and netd, neither of which made any difference, got that same blue popup for both.
So does anyone know for sure if it's really being triggered and I'll get hit with the $30/month hotspot fee or if I can safely ignore this?
I do not get charged extra for Mobile AP or tethering. Just slowed down if I hit 5 gigs.
Thanks, that's very helpful. Yours is 5g though? I think my contract throttles me at 2g!
Edit: Yep, just checked, I get throttled at 2g. I'm on a two-line plan with my wife for $100 for both lines, unlimited text and talk, throttled data after 2g. Wonder if there are different plans with different throttle caps? I've never even hit 2g but now that I've discovered I can tether that may change...

that's not really fair.
I read the contract "yes".
I could find anything that says that they can amend it.
And look --> 5gb throttle and tether fee.
I haven't gotten anything yet though.
PS how do you know that you got throttled. I did get some slow 4g last month, but it was still useable.
If throttled, should you be able to see 2g on your status bar?
I've been using tmo for years. The only time I had an issue is when I exceeded 10gb. That month I had a fee, I agreed to pay it and claimed ignorance, got it removed. No problems since.
After the 5 gig "softcap", you are limited to EDGE speed, but data services still work.
EDIT: jb0ne, I was able to get 5g for $20/mo through retentions. However, if you have the promo $49.99/line, then any change would require a new minute and messaging plan.

Wifi tether worked for me just fine until i started watching movies on it. They did not just automatically charge me. All they did was send me a txt msg and shut me off from using wifi tether. I found that if u change ur internet browser info in ur registry on ur computer u can still use this service for free even after they shut u off. Do not edit ur registry if u dont know what u are doing. Also there is no charge for going over ur 5gb cap they just slow it down to a crawl. If u want u can pay an extra 30$ for a 10gb cap. If u dont use enourmous amounts of data like i did with the tether they never shut it off.

Except that barnacle only makes ad hoc networks. Kindle fire needs infrastructure mode. Android-wifi-tether is the only program I've found that can do it, but like i said it seems to trigger the tmobile hotspot....but I'm not sure.
I never did, btw there r actually lots of other apps that do that as well... although i did get a text from tm asking me to stop lol
Try opengarden....its awesome!
Opengarden also only makes ad hoc networks. Their code looks like it was lifted straight out of Android wifi tether; guess they left the infrastructure option behind though.

I recently went back to stock rooted rom from Alliance because my WiFi went out and I was not able to get it back on anything other then stock.
Unfortunately that means I lost my WiFi tethering. I found FoxFi to work, I just wanted to make sure this didn't incur any extra charges and worked like the in app did for alliance.

I'm in the same boat as you with unlimited. Been using FoxFi without any issues for years now. No extra charges.
Just don't torr 500GB of movies and get red flagged. Any illegal down loading will void the TOS agreement. They will send u a letter.
On a side note, I did ask a friend who knows a guy that works for big red. He said they can see and detect FoxFi traffic in the data packets. Meaning, ya they have programs in place that detect tethering with excessive data usage. So some peps do heavy tethering and nothing happens and verizon knows.
The FCC made a ruling against Verizon in 2012 and is worth reading
The Right to Tether: What the Verizon/FCC Settlement Means to You
and Federal Communications Commission
The fine print is...Verizon's stance. Current customers with grandfathered unlimited data plans still have to pay. Unfortunately, if you want to tether with your unlimited plan, you have to either upgrade your plan to one of the new, Share Everything plans (which include tethering), or pony up $20/mo for Verizon's "Mobile Broadband Connect" service. You can still tether off the books and hope you don't get caught, but if they catch you, Verizon will either sign you up for Mobile Broadband Connect, put you on a Share Everything plan, or terminate your contract.
Basically verizon lost the fight and got spanked / hand slapped. They could go after you under the FCC agreement but their are no reports that has happened.
Just keep your tethering under 30gigs and you be fine.
Okay cool. Thanks for the reply. I Dont plan on using 30gigs anyway. Probably only around 10/month for the next 3 months. Need my laptop and hotel internet is slow as hell.

Foxfi is working fine on 4.3 or 4.4kitkat, you need to enable lock screen and using pin code, it will ask you to install a trust cert and that's it. If you have root, just use wifi tether router app (very clean an simple tethering app). I'm using both and they both working fine.

It's only avail on their Pro and Smart plans, and I think only supported on a few phones that they publish.
Cricket does include tethering on their plans just not on their unlimited. If you have the $50 or $60 plan you are eligible. But you also have to pay $10 to use the feature. They state that on their site.
