what wifi tether to use - Thunderbolt General

i just flashed the blackhole rom and all i can say is wow. it is incredible, so much cooler than some of the other ones ive found. but anyways im rooted and i was wondering what a good wifi tethering app to use is. obviously a free one that i wont have to pay ridiculous amounts of money for each month on my bill if i use it

Good luck with that. Most carriers are trying to crack down on this theft...check the market place they are there

Speaking of tether I have three questions.
1. If you start using a ridiculous amount of data you think vzw would catch on and try to charge you for it?
2. When vzw transitions to tiered data, they can't modify your plan if you currently have unlimited data can they?
3. Does vzw throttle data at a certain point?

yep use wife tether

answers
1. probably if ur in the top 5% of users of data
2. no they cant. you are grandfathered in
3. not the 4g. i heard of people saying they used 40, 65 even 80 gb and they did not get throttled or cut off.

these phones can use quite a bit of data themselves. I think most of the apps use the "stealth" type of tether where verizon would have to guess that you were tethering based off of overall data usage.
verizon can throttle you. According to their policy, they will throttle the top 5% of data users, esp during peak times so as to not effect their network.

1. If you have unlimited data, then it wouldn't matter. If they can't prove you tether, then they can't charge you.
2. If you have unlimited data, you will be grandfathered into unlimited until you change your plan.
3. I've heard reports that they do and don't. I have never noticed being throttled, but I don't use a lot of data.
Verizon will soon be able to detect tether users. If you ever get an official update to your phone, say goodbye to tethering. Also google is starting to restrict downloads of tether apps to certain carriers, and you can bet verizon will be one of them.
Tethering days are numbered.

im running open garden wifi...same thing as wifi tether. i can't find wifi tether on the market

To find Wireless Tether on the market, you have to go into Airplane mode, enable WiFi and then search for it there.

or simply go to this website

Those of you saying that VZW can't change your data plan/charge you extra and can't detect tethering are fools. The valid question is not whether they can do these things, it is a matter of whether they care or not. Right now I'm sure that they don't. The future is always an unknown.

I wonder if its downloaded through the phone if VZW would have record of it somewhere?

I've used that particular tethering app on various phones successfully in the past, and am in fact tethered with it over my Droid Charge (with version 3.1 beta). On most phones it's shown as an ad-hoc connection, not a real "access point" or "hotspot" like it does with the official tethering app. (The Charge right now is showing as an ad-hoc device, not a real wifi ap.)
Which version are you using on the Thunderbolt? What settings? I tried it this morning on the TB with 3.1 and while it appeared to work and connect as a real hotspot with the laptop, the laptop couldn't get any connections beyond the TB. I had everything on "auto".
Any hints/tips appreciated.
The connection right now for me on the Charge is more stable than with the official hotspot app...and it was the same with the official app on my Thunderbolt. I've posted youtube videos of both phones being used as a hotspot where the mobile data connection keeps flickering off, sometimes as rapidly as on for 5 seconds, no data for 5 seconds. It was maddening. Yesterday I had to pull out my TMobile Nexus S and use it's CM7 hotspot (which shows as a real access point, btw) to get a useable connection to the web.
Seems like the VZW official offerings aren't very stable.

I use the Wireless Tether 3.0 beta but you have to go to settings and click hTC routing fix for it to work.

Thanks! I missed that one in the settings. I also had to change the Device Profile from Auto to Generic, but now I'm tethered on my MacBook via the Thunderbolt, and it shows as a real access point.

I have been using wireless tether for root users on Das Bamf 3.0 RC4 with MR2 radio and have not had any drop issues thus far.

Just downloaded this as well. Works great! Thanks for the tip

I believe the 2.0.7 one from the Google site is the only one that works on the thunderbolt.

No more tethering on T-Mobile

I'm using the latest cm7 nightly and whenever I tether either over wifi or through USB on my x64 windows 7 machine, the internet dies after a couple minutes. Is anyone else having this issue?
I thought it might be an issue with the nightly build so I switched back to the stock rom and the internet tethering behaved exactly the same way. I also tried tethering to my laptop which is 32-bit windows 7. Because it didn't work on my laptop either, I think its either a hardware issue with my phone or T-Mobile is blocking the tether now.
I've also noticed that voip calling with the gingerbread sip client only works on wifi. I suspect that T-Mobile is starting to enforce some of their policies finally :/

Bottom line is my data is mine. regardless of what device i use it on.

Capped?
Sounds like you're being capped :/ T-mobile will cap your data if you're using too much of it.. I've heard this many times.. they cap after 5gb of data, or maybe its 10gb? I'm not really sure but that sounds like what's happening to you. Usually it will disconnect or kick you to EDGE to slow you down.. Sucksss

Not really. It may be that he hitting his cap but my friend just got tmobile and he can't tether either. I tried it out and it didn't work. I could connect but the internet wouldn't work and I know for a fact he didn't hit his cap. I just tried it and my tether works and I dont officially pay for it. I'm running royal panache. I know I'm not at my cap... I only used about 2/5 gb so far. And the 4g will work on my phone even after my tethering stops working.
I noticed that while tethering that Google Chrome says "resolving proxy" in the status bar. The connection works really well within the first minute of tethering and then gets slower and slower until it dies completely.
I have x86 and x64 windows 7 machines that both show the same symptoms when tethering. But when I boot into my x64 Ubuntu desktop the tether works indefinitely. I suppose that T-Mobile detects how windows handles its network and somehow disables the tether through proxys.

I can still tether too, but I don't use it to often though, only when I need to get something important while i'm out. But I've been tethering since I had my G1 and when I had my g1 i would tether my ps3 to to lighten the load on my wifi router. I dont do that anymore but I still like tether since I do pay around 30bux for 5GB unl, I want to make use of what i pay for. But i end up using around 2GBs per month anyway.
I don't tether much at all. I only have been browsing the internet with the tether because my cable DSL has been out for a week. But that's another story

I have had to tether a few times with my laptop and had no issues, I don't do it often either though but I've yet to recieve a notice stating other wise. I would think that since they provide network service by means of usb network cards it would depend on the amount of data used in a yearly quater which would force anyone to upgrade their service for obvious reasons. My brother travels on business alot and he had to switch service for the same reason, not because he was doing anything wrong but because there was a better service provided for that specific use. If your on a laptop all day get a network card other wise tethwring should be for simple tasks ans periodic use only.
Sorry, Newbie to tethering, So when you hit the 5gb cap tmobile will shut off/throttle the data services?
Does that apply even if i have the Old school Even More plan with unlimited data? I could understand how new or plan changes where the option for fully unlimited is not available but not so much for old school plans.
I also realize post merger I may be out of luck but one can hope.
It's still unlimited, the new plan starts throttling at 2GB instead of 5GB. You still have data, just at edge speeds.

He's right, if your using more than that you should be on another plan, 5gbs is alot for a phone no matter how you cut it, personally I can blow threw 5 in a day easily depending on what I'm up to obviously but anything over that should be on a USB wireless network card.
Example:
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phones/?shape=lcards
ive been capped a few times and got a text message from t-mobile saying if i tethered any more that i would be charged. they have a monthly fee for tethering and hot spotting. its something insane like 25 bux a month. thats only happened once though and ive tethered and h spotted since with no problems. its accumulative i assume and you have to switch back and forth from each style of web connecting. try it and see if it helps at all.

Yes, they can, I got the nasty gram recently (actually the second one).
I was honest and told them I was tethering a laptop, I suspect that honesty is what got them to put me back on my unlimited.
We are not exactly sure how they are detecting tethering, there are a number of ways (using the TTL for example, it decreases as it passes each network device on the path to the destination, ATT expect a certain TTL value when it comes from a phone, when it comes from a tethered device, that value will be 1 less). Other methods involved deep packet inspection, where you can identify that network address translation is taking place.
Also, apparently the iphone tags tethered packets or something.
To get around this, run openvpn (you will need a vpn server somewhere as well), and tunnel all your traffic through teh VPN server... The only thing ATT will ever see is an encrypted tunnel between your phone and the vpn server and nothing else.
There is alot more to it, but it works.
I have not gotten one of these letters/texts/email and I teather ALL the time and stream

Your on a tiered plan, they would encourage you using data, because then they get money from you.
They watch unlimited data users like a hawk, but that's why I use a VPN to encrypt my data, have fun figuring out what I'm doing.

WiFi Tethering & PS3

Ok so ive searched countless threads trying to solve my problem but i cant seem to find any solutions. Im trying to wifi tether my g2x to my ps3 (not using windows) however i know that the ps3 cant pick up ad-hoc networks. Ive read that the wifi tether needs to be in an infrastructure mode or something like this. Ive tried using the wifi tether app v3.1 beta 11 and it works to wifi tether to my laptop and ipod touch but not to my ps3. Was anyone else able to accomplish what i am trying to do?
Additional Info:

Kernel: faux123's ics beta kernel 0.49
thanks
So I'm guessing no one with a g2x has tried this???

Yes, if you can't find it then you aren't looking hard enough. I'm actually USB tethered right now and that's in the same place (as usual) as WiFi tethering.
I've got a question, does T-Mo charge for me using the phone's build in tethering ability? I know that 3rd party apps have found ways around it if they do because I've been using a 3rd party app for tethering and have gotten no complaints from T-Mo, using the built in one would be much nicer though.
As far as I know, regardless of plan, no, they don't. I'm currently on a contracted 2GB/month plan and I don't get charged, that's one of the ways they get away with the song and dance of "unlimited" data.
Edit: for the sake of explanation, I don't know about Pay as You Go plans, so hence the "as far as I know"

Sweet I'm on the same plan.
Tethering uses your regular data. No they won't/can't charge extra for you to use the data you paid for.
The tethering counts towards your "limit" so be cautious.
I really do wish some people would look around and try things on their phone before asking questions.
Even a simple "cm7 wifi tether" in Google would come up with results...

Weird.. well cm7 comes with it's own wifi tethering. It's in wireless settings. Give it a try, should work. Never tried on cm9 and not running it either.
T-Mobile doesn't do that. They might ask you to pay for it but it doesn't apply because cm7 has it built in. I think T-Mobile has an app you download for wifi tethering?

I figured it out, it comes on the phone stock and if you use it with the stock ROM t-mo has it set up to use their tethering APN which they make you pay for, CM roms and other Wifi Tethering apps use your default Data apn, thus T-mo only.detects it as data usage.
It's what I used to do when I had an iPhone w/ AT&T, just changed the tethering APN to the data APN and BAM undetectable.

[Q] Android Wifi Tether -- will T-mobile charge me?

I recently discovered Android Wifi Tether, the first stable, functional and reliable app that creates an infrastructure AP so I can tether my Kindle Fire. The only problem is when I activate tethering, in the status bar I get the yellow Wifi Tether icon flasing by then a moment later, I get a smaller blue icon that says "Tethering or hotspot active". This is the same message that comes from T-mobile/2.3.6 ROM that says you're using their (pricey) builtin hotspot feature. When I go into Settings - Wireless- Tethering -Mobile AP settings the Mobile AP is grayed out and it says "Error" underneath it. With Wifi Tether off Mobile AP is not grayed and can be checked on/off. I don't want to get charged for tethering my KF!
Does anyone know how to setup Wifi Tether to not trigger the builtin hotspot feature -- or if it even does?
Specs:
Samsung Galaxy S4g mostly stock rooted 2.3.6
Android Wifi Tether 3.1 beta 11 (latest one as this moment). I'm using Samsung Galaxy S profile and for setup method I've used both Auto and netd, neither of which made any difference, got that same blue popup for both.
So does anyone know for sure if it's really being triggered and I'll get hit with the $30/month hotspot fee or if I can safely ignore this?
I do not get charged extra for Mobile AP or tethering. Just slowed down if I hit 5 gigs.
Thanks, that's very helpful. Yours is 5g though? I think my contract throttles me at 2g!
Edit: Yep, just checked, I get throttled at 2g. I'm on a two-line plan with my wife for $100 for both lines, unlimited text and talk, throttled data after 2g. Wonder if there are different plans with different throttle caps? I've never even hit 2g but now that I've discovered I can tether that may change...

that's not really fair.
I read the contract "yes".
I could find anything that says that they can amend it.
And look --> 5gb throttle and tether fee.
I haven't gotten anything yet though.
PS how do you know that you got throttled. I did get some slow 4g last month, but it was still useable.
If throttled, should you be able to see 2g on your status bar?
I've been using tmo for years. The only time I had an issue is when I exceeded 10gb. That month I had a fee, I agreed to pay it and claimed ignorance, got it removed. No problems since.
After the 5 gig "softcap", you are limited to EDGE speed, but data services still work.
EDIT: jb0ne, I was able to get 5g for $20/mo through retentions. However, if you have the promo $49.99/line, then any change would require a new minute and messaging plan.

Wifi tether worked for me just fine until i started watching movies on it. They did not just automatically charge me. All they did was send me a txt msg and shut me off from using wifi tether. I found that if u change ur internet browser info in ur registry on ur computer u can still use this service for free even after they shut u off. Do not edit ur registry if u dont know what u are doing. Also there is no charge for going over ur 5gb cap they just slow it down to a crawl. If u want u can pay an extra 30$ for a 10gb cap. If u dont use enourmous amounts of data like i did with the tether they never shut it off.

Except that barnacle only makes ad hoc networks. Kindle fire needs infrastructure mode. Android-wifi-tether is the only program I've found that can do it, but like i said it seems to trigger the tmobile hotspot....but I'm not sure.
I never did, btw there r actually lots of other apps that do that as well... although i did get a text from tm asking me to stop lol
Try opengarden....its awesome!
Opengarden also only makes ad hoc networks. Their code looks like it was lifted straight out of Android wifi tether; guess they left the infrastructure option behind though.

Tethering A Computer vs. Tablet

Tried to ask this in the general forums and didn't get an answer, wondering f you guys could help. Got an s3 to keep my unlimited data. Reading it says that Verizon can tell if you tethering to a computer due to TTL packets. I don't know much about networking but reading it says that windows computers while tethering push a value of 124 or 128 packets unless configured while android devices have a value of 64. The thing is I never tether to my computer only my tablet. So can I safely go nuts tethering to my tablet as if it was my phone due to it looking like I'm using my phone or am I way off and can Verizon tell I'm tethering and using my tablet. I really just want tot tether the hell out f my tablet when I need it. Anyways as this is XDA can I hide it safely? I have an unlimited data plan so the whole OK to tether thing since that lawsuit doesn't apply to me with this.

The thing is I never tether to my computer only my tablet.

I don't know about the packet size issue you mentioned.
Otherwise, I have read that if*your Verizon tethering indicator turns on or your usage suddenly goes quite high for a month or more, they might suspect you of tethering without a plan and look into it. It's also said that apps like PDAnet make it very difficult for the service provider to figure out if you are tethering or not - regardless of what you're connected to.

VZW can no longer block tethering on 4g phones. Due to FCC saying so. Simple Google search will fond multiple articles.
There is no restrictions on unlimited versus tiered data plan. What counts is that you have a 4g phone. Check out this article ans the tether away.

Rocking T2 on the unlocked VSG3!
I've read differently. It sounds like if you have an unlimited data plan you can only use that data plan for a single device meaning that you can't tether the unlimited data. I read multiple places that this is part of the terms of service and it doesn't apply to unlimited data plan users... M
aybe somebody can clarify this for me because it would be great to use my unlimited data for tethering when on vacations.

Tethering
Its like not paying you bill. You get a warning. You can always deny it or ignore it. Modern PDANet if thats what you are boing to use has some countermeasures. At least 2 I think. Don't know if they are effective. You can just use Orobot to tunnel your traffic and I'm pretty certain that would work. I don't know what you plan to do but I wouldn't go download something shady from some torrent site though. Web browsing and getting email is probably fine.
I've been tethering my laptop to my phone since I first figured out how to do it with the Droid X. Meaning basically since I rooted it and found a decent tether app. Out of 5 people on a business share plan(business version of family plan - add a line for 9.99 etc) I've always had significantly highest usage. 5 gigs at a bare minimum, and not once has verizon figured out I'm tethering.
I honestly dont think they can really tell if you are or arent tehtering. 4g or 3g.
Curious, is Verizon still charging people today who were paying before the ruling? Is it possible now for me to use built in hotspot instead of wifi tether, regardless of whether or not i am on a custom rom? I am using latest synergy atm with wifi tether, i should have no problem using built in right?

I believe you can if you turn it on through the notification toggles...Why tho? The WiFi for Root Users is a lot more customizable...

atm no. the software is still there to keep you from doing that. IF you root, the world is your oyster though... and they aren't actually allowed to do anything to do. They just aren't rushing to open everyone up to free hotspotting.
