[Q] A few hours with my transformer

Having received my transformer this morning, all I can say is i love it! however, there are definitely a few issues that are bugging me;
1. the build quality. i constantly feel where the outer rim and the back casing are supposed to join, but dont and its a constant remind of its quality
2. the dock. its brilliant but the putting the tablet into the dock is so annoying and im afraid I may end up breaking the mechanism on the dock. which leads me to my next point...
3. connectivity. the tablet actually has about as much connectivity as an ipad, which is a REAL shame. would it have been so difficult to implement a micro/usb port onto the tablet? i appreciate the sd card slot but personally I'd have preferred the micro/usb than the sd card, but hey atleast the sd card works! you cannot really experience the transformer properly without the keyboard dock so when docking the tablet I am extremely cautious incase i do do some damage.
4. trackpad. the two buttons on the trackpad also feel really cheap when pressing. I suppose this is to be expected when paying as little I have for this tablet.
My final issue, for now, is the constant freezing of the keyboard which i believe has been addressed in a firmware update in the US and not in the UK. Would be nice to get it soon! anyone know when we brits get this update, and any other update there is floating around??

there is a USB port adapter being released by Asus in the near future. Also the trackpad feels real solid to me.

my buttons on the trackpad feel really plasticy but i guess thats to be expected. although iv not spent a great deal of time with the dock, guess ill have a more informed idea in a few days

they feel like plastic but they feel robust and sturdy to me, or are you experiencing different issues?

happy with the trackpad buttons too..they're robust..
as for the docking mechanism..you'll get used to it eventually...and it's a lot easier to dock after being used for a while.

I have no problems that seriously bother me. If you don't like it there's always the option to return it. I would not keep something that bothers me that much!

I am just waiting to see if its a case of getting used to it, will only return as a very last resort because I'm very happy with the rest of the tablet as I'm sure the majority of transformer users are!

Dock is very solid. And it has usb ports so I'm confused about your review.

Excellent choice! I think it has a lot of potential. Obviously, the hardware issues won't be resolved but the software will be splendid in a few months!

U say it has as much connectivity as an iPad yet I dont see a micro sd slot ,HDMI port, or a dock slot on the iPad, can u help me find it

i think he means why didnt they add a usb to the tablet as well so if you didnt buy the dock you could have a usb port. i think it would have been a nice feature especially on the left hand side of the tablet where the power and volume buttons are. i do like the dock option especially since it adds more battery life to the tablet.

^ Actually the iPad2 has a dock slot (smartass), it's just basically a keyboard, without any of the usefullness of the TF's dock.
The dock has USB ports, yes, but the tablet itself doesn't. I can see where kashifnazir is going with this; I'd like a USB port - even a micro/mini would do - on the tablet itself as well. If I wanted to just grab something of somone's USB stick, I might not necessarily what to root in my bag for the dock every time.
Regardless, it's relatively minor. The Transformer is still the portable computer I've been waiting for since tablets first hit the market.

I sort of noticed this issue too, but try this:
Press the trackpad button all the way out on the edge. Feels cheap doesn't it? Now press the button about halfway between the edge and the rubber bumper that the screen rests on when closed. Now, it feels almost better than some netbook trackpad buttons I've used.

My thoughts after some time on the TF
Charger: It appears that the charger is marginal at best and when used to charge the TF/Dock combo with medium battery remaining the charger overheats and either dies or shuts down until it cools. I have been charging separately and if lots of charging is needed, do it in increments. Seems to work fine. Excellent biz opportunity design a 15VDC 3.0a power supply with a USB3.0 female connector.
Dust: The plastic protective cover was covered with dust when I opened the box. Luckily nothing inside the TF. ASUS needs to revisit the assy and packaging cleanliness requirements.
UI: Would be nice to have option to move soft buttons from bottom to side of screen as they are easier to access when holding the device.
Case creek. My case is solid, but I noticed that the hinge on the dock is very stiff and I can see how opening and closing the combo by pushing on the TF could easily cause considerable stress on the case causing it to flex.
Overall for an early adopted device I am impressed.

as some of the more eagle eyed readers have spotted, i was simply saying that id like a usb port on the tablet which is more useful than a hdmi and SD slot for me, thats all

yeh upon a bt more usage ive realised its more sturdy in the middle, just accustomised to using it on th edge but i can adapt

Excellent question, main reason was the display and the dock and having played with both I preferred this. However, I did also blindly expect it to have one but its ok, ill just get the USB accesory so life is good

I understand, but from a business perspective, I think it would have been a horrible idea for Asus to include a USB/micro USB port on the tablet itself. They wouldn't have the potential to sell nearly as many docks, and getting consumers to buy both parts is how they've chosen to market the Transformer.

Common Problems with tf300

I'm planning on buying this tablet soon and I just wanted to know what I should test out on the tablet first to still be eligible for returns if ever something is wrong. So what are some problems that usually occur with the tf300 so that I can test it out as soon as possible? And what are the usual things I should look out for? By the way, I'll be getting the one bundled the keyboard.
Another question, with the white tf300, does dirt get stuck easily on the back of the tab because of the circular texture? Thanks

Mine had a slightly loose back-cover and made a sound when pressed firmly on the sides. Although most people probably won't be bother by it.
I haven't had any other "problems" with it, but i would suggest checking the screen for dead pixels and if the touchscreen functions properly.
Also search through the forum here for people reporting problems and check for those.

Not sure if anyone else has this issue but the screen appears to register touch before you actually touch the screen, it's only when your finger is extremely close to touching thescreen that this occurs ( maybe mine has a fault or I am too electrically charged :cyclops: ) .. Also I put on a wet type screen protector and thought my screen was faulty but found out later it can take a day or so for the screen protector to settle in ?
Works fine now though...

Regarding the cover, does dirt get stuck easily when you slide your fingers around the back cover?

I think the touch screen problem is normal from time to time since that happens to my phone as well at times.
Are wet screen protectors too thick to be able to dock the tablet? I read a couple of users had trouble docking. I was thinking of getting the acase screen protector just to be safe since it's dry.

Another thing to watch out for is software related. Many of the TF300s, mine included, have invalid serial numbers. They can't get automatic updates, use the Asus device locator, or validate registration on the Asus webpage.

How did you get an invalid serial?

I just returned my TF300 16 GB to Best Buy because after 2 months the touchscreen went haywire...It registered all sorts of touches I never made. I'm hoping its just a manufacturing issue and not a design issue. I normally keep it docked and hope that's not the cause.
Props to Best Buy who made the exchange very painless...for $20 more they gave me the 32 GB despite being past the return date.:laugh::good:

It comes that way. It would appear Asus' factories failed to register quite a large percentage of the tablets with the update server.
One way to check is to use the Asus device locator. If it refuses to let you use your serial number, then yours is one of the invalid ones.

Charger port aluminum popped up? Should i send it back?

So everyone was alright with my tab. the software was a little buggy with jellybean but nothing i couldnt live with. then one night after i finished charging it i look at the charger and see the picture i am attaching. i dont know how this happened. that part always clicked when i pressed it and now it doesnt but it looks like someone dropped it. i contacted asus and i sent pictures and they are starting an RMA. but should i do it and have my tab gone for 3 weeks and maybe it wont be fixed and i might have to pay for it.i told them i was having random reboots and stuff in hopes they would replace it and send me a new one. are my dreams far fetched?
I mean it isnt that bad but its ugly and not my fault. do you think they will fix it or replace it and do you think its worth the 3 weeks without it?

That happened to my wife's tablet, I thought it was due to the loose screen in that area and then docking it. I had her send it back to Amazon at about 3 weeks old and got a new one. I told her to be more careful when docking.

This happened to my wife's tab also, just bent it back. Does not sit well with me that it is so easy to bend but even if you return it, this will likely happen again.

You cn bend it back to almost normal as long as there is no crease. If you have a hobby hammer that the head is made out of silicone, you can tap it back to perfect, just be careful not to hit the screen of hit it hard, just do small taps until your satisfied. It happens usually when docking or undocking.

You can also use the black cap that covers the charging port by placing it above the bump and press down with light pressure until it returns to its normal position. This happened to me once with my Infinity. I wasn't paying attention to where the cord was and I ended up tripping on it:\ When I had the Prime it seemed easier to bend, less firm/Sterdy vs the Infinity. Waste of time RMAing it.

You might want to delete/modify the pics that contain your complete serial #. That is something that you should keep to yourself - see the infamous ASUS device tracker thread for an example why: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1833442

I don't understand how you can say it's not your fault. It's certainly not the fault of Asus. Of course they would fix or replace it but it would be at your own cost. I don't see why Asus should cover the cost of putting it right?
Don't get me wrong, I would hate this to have happened to my tablet, but I also wouldn't expect to pass the cost on to someone else (which I believe you are implying) due to my carelessness.
Live with it, repair it yourself or pay to have it fixed for you.

Odd. My port is actually bent the OPPOSITE way haha. I just bent it back. I don't think it's worth the three weeks + your hard-earned money. :laugh:

This happened on my Prime. It is caused by pushing the power connector in at an angle and not being careful or once it is in, allowing something to rest on the connector pushing the frame up.
It is easy to fix yourself and you can push the metal back down with your finger. Best way is to get something made of rubber or softer plastic and reshape it back to normal yourself.

Prime Dock Won't Latch Anymore, Suggestions?

Long story short, I bought the Transformer Prime and dock in late June. About a month later I traded the tablet for the Infinity and kept the dock since I read many people stating that it was compatible. First thing I noticed with the Infinity is that it required more force to dock the tablet into the keyboard. I had to push down and slide the lock tab to the right to actually lock the tablet. About a couple weeks ago I noticed that with the tablet docked and the lock tab pushed all the way to the right, I could easily slide the tablet upwards and remove it from the dock without sliding the lock tab to the left first. What this means is that the tablet could easily become undocked, causing it to fall easily if held improperly. The locking mechanism seems to work properly, but I'm not sure if the locking pins have become worn or if the part that the pins connect to inside the tablet have rounded off or something. Has anyone else experienced this problem yet, and if so, what are the possible solutions to fix this? If it's a problem with the dock, I'll probably just end up buying the newer dock ASUS released recently that's stated to be compatible with the Infinity. I've also thought about taking my tablet to Best Buy and seeing if it will dock securely with one of their docks to see if I can rule out the dock. If it's a problem with the tablet itself, I guess I'm SOL. Right now I'm staring at bits of a torn up paper towel, contemplating shoving them into the holes to see if it will temporarily fix the problem, lol.

Just wondering, is the dock still covered under warranty if your bootloader is unlocked? I'd like to send my dock to Asus if I find out the latches on it are broken.

I have your exact problem! There is nothing wrong with the locking pins on mine. They're metal and are designed not to be damaged if the tablet is inserted in the locked position. The issue is the locking pins do not line up with the small piece of metal in the locking grooves/holes on the tablet. I can see tiny abrasion marks a few millimetres in front of where they should be at the bottom of my tablet showing that they simply are not lining up.
The issue is with the dock. This should be covered on warranty.
R.e. trying to buy another one - I would warn you that consensus appears to be that the TF700 dock is structurally identical in every way to the TF201 dock. The only difference is the finishing colour which is slightly different and the cost of the TF700 dock which ASUS kindly increased.
My unit came together with a 'TF700' dock and the colours match. And like you it was a very tight fit to start with. I didn't notice the latch problem until last week though (because I actually never tried to remove the tablet with the lock mechanism ON before!).

How did you get on with the warranty repair?
I have opened up a POLL on transformer forums to see how many users have experienced the docking pins in the tablet either rounding off or snapping off completely.
I'd really appreciate if any of you see this message would go there and make a report to have your voice counted.

I've been in contact with ASUS Support in the Netherlands -- they claim it is user-induced damage. I have written a slightly spikier mail, but will have to weigh my legal option if they remain on their stance. A device this expensive should have better build quality.

Did you try ASUS warranty? There is a poll here
... trying to get ASUS to recognise this is a design flaw and not customer induced damage
because
a) The docking tabs in the tablet are PLASTIC
b) There seems to be a tendency for left or right side of tablet to 'catch' in the dock as you remove it and if this occurs just before you release the locking tab---- crack! Locking tab should have hold fast LOCK and UNLOCK positions instead of being spring loaded

I too have this problem. We actually have 2 Infinities and 2 docks. One tablet works fine with both docks, and the other won't stay connected to either dock, so it's definitely the tablet that is broken. Looking inside I can see both plastic pieces are broken off.
What are people's experience with this? Is Asus telling they won't cover it before you even send it in? Are they giving any estimates for what it costs to repair? Pretty crappy that they make a small structural item out of plastic and then say "screw you".

Yes, this is the oen issue that made me put ASUS on my blacklist of ****ty companies -- they put it on "user-induced damage", unseen, and if you send it in, they'll take the 125 Euros anyway, even if they only take a crap and wipe their ***es with the RMA form. I'm happy with the tablet as it nw runs, but NONE of that happiness has to do with AUSS' screwy behavior, poor hardware design decisions and even worse customer support.
I was looking for a Win8 tablet for the family, but the only viable option for now is the HP Envy v2 -- as I said, I will never buy ASUS again. And I have never boycotted anything in my life, be it digital or physical, so that says something. :S

[Q] Dock developed fault in normal use - locking pin snapped off

Hi, I read with interest the posts about wobbly (back and forth) docks on the tf101.
My TF700T developed this also after just 1 month.
Aditionally and more seriously perhaps, I noticed it stopped docking securely. I examined both the dock and the tablet and eventually noticed the retaining pin (inside the hole) on the right side of the tablet seems to have broken off due to frequently docking and undocking the two.
Has anyone else seen this?
ive sent it back to Asus who are claiming customer induced damage. This make me very angry bcoz i looked after it like a baby. all i did was use it a lot both docked and undocked.it never left my house. I reckon its a design flaw and eventually all many more of you will notice this.

Hey, It happened to me too and this other guy. Go to page 2 of this section, and go to one with Broken lock .but seems like its only three of us til now.
There is no solution as is...I've tried to get a replacement parts (like iphone) but i had no luck.

No, it's not only the three of you. "Funnily", the locking pin snapped off on my dock yesterday. I haven't been this angry in years. As with most of the users with a dock, it hardly ever left the dock -- I think I have uncoupled it for at most 6 or 7 times, and as such, it's not even a question of docking it with force or gently...
The locking pin would seem to be unable to withstand keeping the tablet in place for such an extended period. I noticed that both locking pins have degraded considerably -- again, I hardly ever uncoupled the tablet from the dock, so it's 'slide damage'. This would qualify as a hardware design error in my opinion. What moron uses plastic clips on locking devices? That would need some nice metal engineering. This is not even close to the durability that I expect from a 700 euro device!
Once my blood pressure has gone down for a bit, I'll try and drop ASUS Netherlands a line and get my issue known. Then I'll see what their point of view is, and if it's "your own damn fault", I'll have to determine what to do: either proceed to professional help (a lawyer, to be more specific) or let it slide. I do not know what my route would be in this case -- I don't want to risk a stomach ulcer, but my lawyer does this for free (many Europeans have a lawyer plan so there is no financial impediment to asking support).
EDIT: I had secured the tablet to the dock with a few strips of heavy-duty doublesided tape to keep it from accidentally coming out of the dock. I cannot have the tablet's screen cracking from fall damage and ASUS having a stick to beat me with.

Hi, This is great news.... well erm... sorry for your trouble and all but it is good that the numbers who are experiencing/noticing this failure are going up as it lends weight to the design flaw theory. I agree 100% with you that the design does appear to be plastic clips inside the tablet and what I said in my RMA description is that if ASUS did not have an updated reinforced part, that I felt the unit was unfit for purpose and I did not want it back. I was prepared to give them 1 chance to repair it as this is the consumer law in Ireland but I was intending to test it thoroughly upon return. But now that they are trying to say I dropped it or something.... this is another story!
For me, I am still under 3 months and within the time scale to do a credit card charge back. I'd rather have them come after me if they feel they can stand over their design.

Heh. Thanks for your considerate reply. I was one of the first TF700 owners in the world, so I'm far past any warranty period in which they have to prove it my fault instead of me proving it theirs. I'm still too pissed to take up the phone right now, but I will try and send an e-mail to start with somewhere in the next few days.
