I just went to my local T-Mobile to pick up an HTC One M8. I went to the store to save time on shipping. However as soon as I went in there I regretted it.
The guy would not give up trying to sell my useless accessories I was not interested in. Then he went and got the phone and when he came back he already had all his grubby hands around it. I was boiling but didn't say anything because the damage had been done. I don't even understand why they need to open the phones. I like to unpackaged things myself.
They completely ruin the experience. I am considering going back to the store right now and returning it for one sealed in the box. What do you guys think?

I think you should package your phone back up, mail it to yourself and then unbox it.
A few reasons I can think that they "handle" your new phone:
1. To make sure it turns on and works properly before you leave with it.
2. To make sure all the accessories that it's supposed to come with it are in the box.
3. To install your SIM card.
1 and 2 might be a requirement for the employees for liability/anti-scam reasons.

If they brought you a unpacked model then
I think you should have said it right then that you want a packed model
If they opened it in front of you then thats your fault you shouldnt have let them
If it bothers you so much you should have told the seller right away. There is supposed to be a seal on the box which says "do not accept when the seal is broken" (or something similar to this). Thus, I think you could have complained and asked for an sealed box. However, I am not sure whether the seller would exchange the phone now after you have already taken it home...
I've always had the same problem when going to get a new phone.
I would go and change it; tell them something is wrong with it like it turns off randomly, that's something they can't test manually.
For now on when you go in tell them to not open it and that you know how to do it, works for me every time.

i was a little pissed when i went to Verizon to Get my Moto X, i enjoy unboxing stuff for the fun of it, the first time you pull off that Screen protector is the sweetest sound of new life. you should have seen the look on my face when he handed it to me the phone and pretty much ruined the first screen protector that he gave me that i paid $14.99 for three of them and i didn't even get to use the first one!

Hey all. Well with all my reading on the forums and all the hard work the developers have been doing for this tab, I made up my mind to get this tab instead of the Archos 101. So here's my story:
I went to Sears and saw the G Tablet sitting all alone on a shelf with the security wires around it so that it cannot be opened. I thought that they were selling fast so I grabbed it and paid for it.
I drove back to work and pulled it out of the bag. I reached for a scissors/blade to open the box, but I found that there were no security labels on the box. That was weird. I say so because according to Sears if you return it in an openned condition, theres a 15% restocking fee. I thought they would have made sure that it was seald.
Anyways, I open the box and take a look around the black foam that cushions the tab in the box, and what do I see? CAT HAIR!!!! I thought, how could this be? This is supose to be a NEW tablet. I begin to carefully pull the tablet out of the cover and discover that it is covered in finger prints (5+ fingerprints). WHAT!!!!! I quickly placed it back in its cover so that I do not touch the screen at all. I lift the tab in its cover out of the box and notice an empty zip lock at the bottom of the box where the accessories are. Why is it empty????????? Also, the contents that were suppose to be in it are laying next to it OUTSIDE OF THE BAG!!
I immediatley thought, 'Did Sears just sell me a USED device at full price'? I called Sears and told them I have reason to believe the tablet was used and that I'm bringing it back.
Do you guys think I should bring it back, or should I just suck it up and keep it. Also, has this ever happened to you?
Thanks,
Scott
When I got mine the whole box was sealed.
Hi,
If it were me, I'd definitely take it back and get it replaced with a new one.

I would take it back to the store. With a little persistence, you can probably walk away only paying the refurb price as seen on their outlet site. I have heard others doing the same with other products.
I would test the tablet first and make sure it it working. then, You should talk with the store manager and try to get a discount like 20%, if not, then return it with no restocking fee.
I bought mine on Saturday for $349 and I asked the sales, she said that during the holiday weeks, there will NOT be a restocking fee as long as I return it with the orginial box, etc.
Ask for a discount or return it with full refund.
Same here, mine came in shrink wrap.
If you think you got taken, take it back.
However, if it works (big if... be sure about this one), and you like it... what the hey, try talking to the manager.
Thanks for the info and suggestions everyone. Im going to take it back in a few hours right after work. I honestly dont even want it for a discount price. I just want a brand new sealed one. I will post the status of my return once it has been accomplished.
Thanks again,
Scott
We have two G-Tabs; a brand-new one I got for full-price for my wife, and a "refurb" which was really just a returned G-Tab that I got for $279. The used G-Tab functionally is exactly the same with the same warranty, etc except the person who had it before me had flashed an early TnT onto it (and even returned it that way; I had access to all kinds of sites, etc that he forgot to wipe from cache/data. I obviously didn't take advantage of that and erased it completely).
My point is that if the cost doesn't matter to you, I'd exchange it for a new one. Otherwise, you can always get a nice case or some other accessories for it with money you'd get back by taking the "refurb" price. There is not a single difference between my machine and my wife's after nearly a month of use; you can't really tell the difference between the two (unless you know our wallpapers).

Good idea. Im gonna power it on right now and test it as much as possible to see if everything works. If its ok and I get the same warranty, I'll try and talk Sears down. If not, then its a new one. I'll be leaving work in 30 minutes and Sears is just down the road, so I should be reporting back about the swap by 5.
Thanks,
Scott
I wouldn't even bother investing time into it, immediate return for me.
Cat hair? Fingerprints? Not new, not what I paid for.
So Im at Sears now and I just returned the item. Funniest thing, the guy asked me what was wrong and I told him. So he said no problem we will exchange it. Then he punched some buttons and here comes a yellow "clearance" sticker that he just slaps on it for $279. Go figure.
Scott
If it has the power supply/charger and USB cable, I would buy it for $279. the manuals consist of some papers that point you to the WEB.
then when you get it home, go to the DEV page here and download clockwork mod and for me Cyanogenmod and make it sing.
Wow my day gets better and better. So I'm waiting for the new tab and they tell me they have 20 in stock but they can't find it. So they give me a full refund and send me to another store. I asked if I can buy the one I just returned and he said no. It's already processed to go to the warehouse. Again, go figure lol

Wait so they have a unit you returned, slapped a 249 sticker on it and they will not sell it to you?
I would talk to a manager, if that is the one you want. That is not customer service.
I didnt even bother. The guy seemed quite miserable too. Well I'm at another Sears location now and they handed me the item. Guess what, its shrink wrapped. Looks like I got a brand new one. Gonna get home and hack the mess out of this thing lol.
Thanks
Scott
Congrats, the main thing is that you are happy with the purchase.
This happens all the time, unfortunately. And not just at SEARS.
The only thing they screwed up on is not cleaning the darn thing before putting it back on the shelves. If you're going to break your own store rules, at least do it well.
As for a "refurb", the device I have now was a clearance / closeout item - had a lot of fingerprints and the previous owner rooted it. But, for $215 with tax I could live with a used item. On occasion the Outlet will have a GTab at $200 or less - most of the time it's $279.
Stories like these and others are the reasons I don't shop at Sears anymore. After I'd long since stopped shopping there, my wife bought a lawnmower from our local Sears. It had a gas leak. About 1/4 of the way through my lawn it ran out of gas and I learned it was leaking it all over my lawn.
The store insisted since I used it I couldn't return it. They said they would have to "fix it" for me. After the manager raised his voice to me I flipped the receipt over, read the line that states "if you are not completely satisfied at any time return the items for a full refund." I said "I'm not satisfied. Do I need to explain that to corporate?". He jerked the receipt out of my hands and started pounded the refund into the register without saying another word.
My previous experiences with Sears were similar. Same problem with Western Auto which at the time was owned by Sears. I finally got a hint and stopped shopping at there or any of their subsidiaries like K-Mart (which has another whole string of horror stories regarding misleading pricing I could discuss.)
My G tablet is on it's way from Staples right now. I think Santa may hang onto it though.

Ok so heres my situation... I bought the inspire from best buy about 20 days ago on an upgrade, I decided to not get their black tie plan because I did not cause any physical damage to my old captivate so I thought I would be alright to pass on it this time. Until today that is... I had the phone in my back pocket and when I sat down I must have applied some extra pressure to the front and in result the screen in mostly shattered.
So I have decided to come to you guys in search for a few solutions. I noticed that you can add the black tie on up to 30 days from the purchase of your phone but I am doubting whether or not I could convince them to put it on my phone even though the phone is already broken but I was wondering if anyone here has ever had any luck getting this plan on after the damage had been done?
I would hate to think the best buy would really be so ignorant as to make me keep a phone with a shattered screen for the remaining 2 years that is on my contract (granted it is my fault it broke), I would like to think they would help someone in my position out to keep me happy and wanting to return back to their stores.
If there is no chance for this, then what would you guys recommend I do to get this fixed for as little cost as possible.
THANKS!
I just took a captivate that wouldn't turn on and they replaced it with an inspire. So I think they're pretty good about exchanging phones. Unless I just got lucky haha

With a phone that unquestionably has suffered physical damage, I don't think it's reasonable to expect them to go that far in wanting to keep their customers happy.
Unless this "black tie" thing pretty much effectively says "sure, throw your phone off a cliff, drive over it with a semi, we want you happy, so we'll keep giving you phones," then I wouldn't get your hopes up.
But like Matt said, you got nothin' to lose and everything to gain at this point...
You never know what they will do. In December I upgraded to an Aria for $0.01, I did get the black tie coverage. There was a slight issue with the earspeaker and I took it somewhere local so I wouldn't be without my phone for a matter of weeks. Needles to say, that was a mistake. The repair place screwed it up. I took it to best buy and long story short, after sending it off for repair 4 times they have me an Inspire.
I think it is a very good thing to get to know the ppl that work in mobile and not be one of those customers they hate to see come into the store. They all knew me by my first name.lol They have me my choice of phones and I chose the Inspire and have never looked back!
BB its usually quite eager to please the customer, they know if you are happy with their mobile dept. you may buy your next tv there also.

Well, there's a teeny tiny bit of difference between a bad ear speaker and a "mostly shattered" screen, but, who knows...
brick it ..... That is the only solution O.O. I remember while back best buy told me if I bought their protection plan, I could walk out side drive my car over my phone bring it back in and get a new one/ fixed, never tested it though.
Obviously don't buy the Black Tie plan and then immediately whip the phone out of your pocket.... If it was me, I'd take the receipt in and say that I decided to go with the black tie plan after all. Then I'd take it in the next day, or the day after that. It might still look suspicious, but not as.
I took the black tie protection for my laptop and TV. Laptop got its hdd replaced twice, without a question. He opened it, took the old one out, put in the new one, and gave the old one back to me.
In my opinion, its worth the trouble/hassle for 3 years.
Thanks for your help and suggestions guys, I will hopefully go up there tomorrow and basiclly beg thats what I get for not adding it on when I got the phone, just my luck. Btw, I wasnt trying to say that they owed it to anyone to replace it, I was just saying would be a kind gesture to someone, who messed up. All they would have to do is change the screen then sell it refurbished for about 50dollars less than a new one.
Also, why do they allow you to add the black tie within the first 30 days but your excluded if you have already broken it then your not allowed to have it anymore. Just my thoughts on it, please pardon my ramblings..
Thanks again for taking the time to respond though!

Well that's actually encouraging for the op, then. Unless of course they were exaggerating for purposes of selling the program.
I guess the only thing that would concern me is the amount of time the op takes between signing up for the program, and "cashing" in on it, so to speak.
I also don't know if they would require physical inspection of the phone when signing up, if done after the initial sale, when of course the brand new phone is there in front of them...
Just a quick update, I took it in today and they were very kind and helping and because I had the protection plan on my old phone they said they could add it back and and say that the person who sold me the new phone had forgotten to transfer the plan to the new phone.
They told me to wait 2-3 before I bring it back in for repairs because they are usually not allowed to do this to an already broken phone but the manager gave the approval.
Just thought that I would poke back so anyone in this situation in the future will have a bit of hope. And that this is another reason why I continue to get my phones at best buy... great customer service (most of the time) and a protection plan that is too good to pass up.

Congrats. Great news for you.
Try not to shatter the screen on the next one, will ya?
And thanks for posting back. It's always good to hear how these things play out.
Put it this way its like buying a car with out "protection" and just that one day after the 30 days you run into a wall.. Take the car back and say hey I would like to get the protection plan. 99.99% they will ask let me see the car. Just as in example. Its a business. But I have the Black tie and the buy back on my phone because just in case I do drop it its cover, I had it on my last phone they sent it out for a repair go it back in like a week brand new could not even tell. Rather then going through att paying 5$s on it if it get stolen and having to pay a delectable. Heck I even got water on my phone and it was covered. So its worth it to me. On the phones think about its your MOBILE phone you have it on you all the time rather it be in your pocket in case or in case on a belt clip you always have that chance of missing your pocket and your phone slips. and BOOM broken screen. And then your like AHH!! FML! lol

I dont know about rapidly, but they have always been good about replacing my damaged phones. I went through 2 captivates (both took a swim) and they replaced them both, but the process took over 2 weeks. And on my last captivate they let me switch to the Inspire since the Captivate was out of stock.
Here is my update, I took it in a few days after I got the plan added and the guy who helped was very nice. They said that they were doing to do a rapid exchange (still not quite sure what that means but I think it is something along the lines of receiving a refurbished phone) and that they would get my "new" phone in within the next few days which is better than the 27 days I waited to receive my Captivate from being fixed a while back.
What sucks is that I am using my miserably slow iphone 3g until I get the new phone in.
One last question, if I am on the best buy reward zone silver level, does the extended 45 day return policy apply to cell phones? And if so, would I be able to exchange the refurbished inspire for the infuse and pay the difference even though they would have technically given me a refurbished phone?
Thanks!
Not sure what to do and I know Im partially to blame here too. I found someone selling an HTC Sensation on craigslist for a decent price. They said it was in brand new shape and nothing at all wrong with it. I called him up to talk about the phone since I was weary of buying from someone I didnt know
He told me he was a sales director for Tmobile so based on that I went up and met him to buy it about 40 miles away and I also went to his kiosk which turned out to be an authorized retailer and not a real Tmobile store.
I turned the phone on and it seemed to work, so I gave him the money and went to my car to put my sim in. At that time when removing the case the power button fell off. I brought it back to him and he said tough luck you already bought it... I went back to my car and was able to get it turned on again, and it had no signal at all. It wouldnt even make an emergency call.
I drove home defeated hoping to send it in to HTC for repairs under warranty, but after having my friend look at it, he noticed all the screws in the back were missing, meaning its void now...
Any idea what I can do here? The guys not returning calls or txts I send him and it looks like I have an expensive paper weight...

Listen to your instinct. It tried to tell you. Anyhow, you basically got screwed. I am not sure there is too much you can do about it... Craigslist even warns about stuff like this. It was at your own risk :/
Even him telling you he was a sales director of T-Mobile then seeing his "kiosk" would have raised all sorts of red flags... it did with me.

I know I should have plugged in my sim card right there in front of him before buying it... I was stupid I dont know what I was thinking... probably nothing Tmobile can do to help me? If he took you to the kiosk, then go back to the kiosk and tell them that you are going to talk to tmobile corporate about it.
If you bought on the kiosk I think you can speak to t-mobile. It is not important that ou found it on the craiglist. He can do thet on the official kiosk.
Okay... So where to start? Alright, so I got this phone in December. I unlocked it and used it up until February... Like every phone I've ever had (this being the first Motorola phone though), I unlocked it and rooted it. I didn't think anything would go wrong, as long as I didn't **** up (software-wise). So the warranty was never a big deal. Never was. Until in February, my screen went black and wouldn't come back on. I could hear the sound from my boot logo, aswell as notifications once on... So I decided, it must be the LCD. So I bought a new LCD, installed it and turned it on to no avail. I figured it might be a faulty LCD, so I returned it and got a new one a week later. I installed that one, and once again, same issue. So finally, after being stumped for another week, I took it into a phone shop for a 'free diagnosis'. They examined it for about 3 weeks and determined it was a cable (the one that connects to the keyboard)... It was ripped, but it was so small that they had to use a microscope to see it. So I bought another Photon Q with a cracked screen for parts. Tonight, I just put in the cable from the Photon Q I just bought... I should mention, the first time I took my Q apart, I broke the digitizer... yeahh.... So, after buying the new digitizer I've spent about $150 TOPS repairing this phone (including buying the wrong part for it and foolishly breaking the digitizer). That's how much sprint would have charged me for the repair anyways, and I'd have gotten a refurbished phone to boot.
SO, my point here is - **** the warranty. It's too damn expensive to be paying for every month, then have to pay an extra $150 on top of that for a replacement. Sure it CAN be faster and more convenient (I spent money on parts and stuff as I got it, I didn't have it all at once so it took me a little while), but you can always figure things out for yourself. This is the first phone I've ever taken apart, and everything ended up being a flawless success doing it myself. So, if your phone's LCD burns out (or so it seems), don't give up hope. Oh, and my other point is... I have an extra brand new LCD I don't need, that I'd sell for $20 (half of what you'll find it for anywhere else) if you're interested haha. Also, I'm interested in buying another keyboard cable so I can finish assembly of this second Q I have here... Just for ****s and giggles
You do know in ever post it says this will void you warranty and tech at actual phone stores won't work on them... once your device is unlock and root you device your on your own or you have to go through your insurances.... I know this cause its what I do for a living....

I'm completely aware of that. I've been rooting phones for year. My point is, that this was my first Motorola phone, also the first time I've had to 'unlock' the bootloader of a phone. Before, all I had to do is unroot it if I wanted Sprint to look at it.
I've since then requested a return slip via Amazon since I saw a dead pixel last night while watching a video. When the video cut to a black screen, I noticed a tiny little blue dot that was not part of the video. I've confirmed it via some pixel checker apps and it is indeed a dead pixel. This is somewhat an eye opener as to the quality of this phone. I love the phone, but the hardware and even customer support lacks a lot. I've sent numerous emails to customer support with no reply back. And it wasn't even about anything major. It's not just the dead pixel that sparked this thought about returning the phone. As many have said, the tap to wake feature is iffy and only works when it wants.
I'm afraid to try my chances again with this phone, but I've been back to the basics of researching into another device. Gut instincts should've went with the HTC One M9. But the amazing price of this phone was hard to pass up. For anybody who has since returned this phone (and hopefully still lurk this subforum) could you let me know why you returned it and which phone you got to replace it? I might press my luck again and buy it again once I receive my refund. Hoping I get one from another recent batch.
Just an update...I sent back the phone today to Amazon for a full refund and in the meantime I ordered another one just so I can get a replacement quicker rather than having to wait 2-6 days for my refund to show up then order another one, but this time I placed an order through Alcatels main website and during checkout it asked me to select shipping speed and there was Standard, 2 day and 1 day, and for the hell of it I wanted to see how much 1 day shipping was and the total said it was 0.00 and the final cost was still only $249.99 which is the main cost of the phone. I was able to successfully place my order with the 1 day shipping method for 0.00. Not sure if my order will still go through but it will be interesting to see.
You should've stuck with Amazon tho, because if something else happens it easier to go thru Amazon for return then thru Alcatel

Yeah I thought about that after I purchased through Alcatel. Thing is, the phone was shipped via Amazon and it even said so during the checkout process. So if anything goes wrong I might still be able to return it hassle free.

You will not be able to return through Amazon so easily. That's what happened to me when I got this for my wife. We actually had to go through a ton of freaking hoops(according to my wife) to make it happen.
We were supposed to send it straight to alcatel and wait 3 weeks. My wife did her thing (whatever that is) and was able to have them do it through Amazon.

Hmm. Well hopefully this replacement phone won't have any flaws. Right away I noticed the box was in better condition than the last one and it seems the speakers are louder. I must've got one from a new batch because I didn't have to install the startup update since it came preinstalled already. So its a newer device it seems. Oh well. Thanks for your input I'll remember that if I ever have to return it again.

Amazon sucks balls when it comes to getting packages in good condition. Every single thing that I have purchased from them this year so far has come in an extremely damaged box. UPS does not give a crap for sure!!!

I rarely order directly from Amazon's fulfillment just based on their rule of ordering $35 or more for free shipping if I wanted something for only $10. I usually go the third-party route who offer free shipping with reliability. But since Alcatel only uses Amazon's fulfillment center, I had no choice. But yeah my first Idol 3 box was smashed in the corner and had weird water stain marks on the front and sides. I had a feeling it was going to be a defective unit just from the box.
