Been through hell and back! - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

Okay... So where to start? Alright, so I got this phone in December. I unlocked it and used it up until February... Like every phone I've ever had (this being the first Motorola phone though), I unlocked it and rooted it. I didn't think anything would go wrong, as long as I didn't **** up (software-wise). So the warranty was never a big deal. Never was. Until in February, my screen went black and wouldn't come back on. I could hear the sound from my boot logo, aswell as notifications once on... So I decided, it must be the LCD. So I bought a new LCD, installed it and turned it on to no avail. I figured it might be a faulty LCD, so I returned it and got a new one a week later. I installed that one, and once again, same issue. So finally, after being stumped for another week, I took it into a phone shop for a 'free diagnosis'. They examined it for about 3 weeks and determined it was a cable (the one that connects to the keyboard)... It was ripped, but it was so small that they had to use a microscope to see it. So I bought another Photon Q with a cracked screen for parts. Tonight, I just put in the cable from the Photon Q I just bought... I should mention, the first time I took my Q apart, I broke the digitizer... yeahh.... So, after buying the new digitizer I've spent about $150 TOPS repairing this phone (including buying the wrong part for it and foolishly breaking the digitizer). That's how much sprint would have charged me for the repair anyways, and I'd have gotten a refurbished phone to boot.
SO, my point here is - **** the warranty. It's too damn expensive to be paying for every month, then have to pay an extra $150 on top of that for a replacement. Sure it CAN be faster and more convenient (I spent money on parts and stuff as I got it, I didn't have it all at once so it took me a little while), but you can always figure things out for yourself. This is the first phone I've ever taken apart, and everything ended up being a flawless success doing it myself. So, if your phone's LCD burns out (or so it seems), don't give up hope. Oh, and my other point is... I have an extra brand new LCD I don't need, that I'd sell for $20 (half of what you'll find it for anywhere else) if you're interested haha. Also, I'm interested in buying another keyboard cable so I can finish assembly of this second Q I have here... Just for ****s and giggles

You do know in ever post it says this will void you warranty and tech at actual phone stores won't work on them... once your device is unlock and root you device your on your own or you have to go through your insurances.... I know this cause its what I do for a living....

I'm completely aware of that. I've been rooting phones for year. My point is, that this was my first Motorola phone, also the first time I've had to 'unlock' the bootloader of a phone. Before, all I had to do is unroot it if I wanted Sprint to look at it.

[Q] Black Tie Program on Broken Inspire

Ok so heres my situation... I bought the inspire from best buy about 20 days ago on an upgrade, I decided to not get their black tie plan because I did not cause any physical damage to my old captivate so I thought I would be alright to pass on it this time. Until today that is... I had the phone in my back pocket and when I sat down I must have applied some extra pressure to the front and in result the screen in mostly shattered.
So I have decided to come to you guys in search for a few solutions. I noticed that you can add the black tie on up to 30 days from the purchase of your phone but I am doubting whether or not I could convince them to put it on my phone even though the phone is already broken but I was wondering if anyone here has ever had any luck getting this plan on after the damage had been done?
I would hate to think the best buy would really be so ignorant as to make me keep a phone with a shattered screen for the remaining 2 years that is on my contract (granted it is my fault it broke), I would like to think they would help someone in my position out to keep me happy and wanting to return back to their stores.
If there is no chance for this, then what would you guys recommend I do to get this fixed for as little cost as possible.
THANKS!
I just took a captivate that wouldn't turn on and they replaced it with an inspire. So I think they're pretty good about exchanging phones. Unless I just got lucky haha

With a phone that unquestionably has suffered physical damage, I don't think it's reasonable to expect them to go that far in wanting to keep their customers happy.
Unless this "black tie" thing pretty much effectively says "sure, throw your phone off a cliff, drive over it with a semi, we want you happy, so we'll keep giving you phones," then I wouldn't get your hopes up.
But like Matt said, you got nothin' to lose and everything to gain at this point...
You never know what they will do. In December I upgraded to an Aria for $0.01, I did get the black tie coverage. There was a slight issue with the earspeaker and I took it somewhere local so I wouldn't be without my phone for a matter of weeks. Needles to say, that was a mistake. The repair place screwed it up. I took it to best buy and long story short, after sending it off for repair 4 times they have me an Inspire.
I think it is a very good thing to get to know the ppl that work in mobile and not be one of those customers they hate to see come into the store. They all knew me by my first name.lol They have me my choice of phones and I chose the Inspire and have never looked back!
BB its usually quite eager to please the customer, they know if you are happy with their mobile dept. you may buy your next tv there also.

Well, there's a teeny tiny bit of difference between a bad ear speaker and a "mostly shattered" screen, but, who knows...
brick it ..... That is the only solution O.O. I remember while back best buy told me if I bought their protection plan, I could walk out side drive my car over my phone bring it back in and get a new one/ fixed, never tested it though.
Obviously don't buy the Black Tie plan and then immediately whip the phone out of your pocket.... If it was me, I'd take the receipt in and say that I decided to go with the black tie plan after all. Then I'd take it in the next day, or the day after that. It might still look suspicious, but not as.
I took the black tie protection for my laptop and TV. Laptop got its hdd replaced twice, without a question. He opened it, took the old one out, put in the new one, and gave the old one back to me.
In my opinion, its worth the trouble/hassle for 3 years.
Thanks for your help and suggestions guys, I will hopefully go up there tomorrow and basiclly beg thats what I get for not adding it on when I got the phone, just my luck. Btw, I wasnt trying to say that they owed it to anyone to replace it, I was just saying would be a kind gesture to someone, who messed up. All they would have to do is change the screen then sell it refurbished for about 50dollars less than a new one.
Also, why do they allow you to add the black tie within the first 30 days but your excluded if you have already broken it then your not allowed to have it anymore. Just my thoughts on it, please pardon my ramblings..
Thanks again for taking the time to respond though!

Well that's actually encouraging for the op, then. Unless of course they were exaggerating for purposes of selling the program.
I guess the only thing that would concern me is the amount of time the op takes between signing up for the program, and "cashing" in on it, so to speak.
I also don't know if they would require physical inspection of the phone when signing up, if done after the initial sale, when of course the brand new phone is there in front of them...
Just a quick update, I took it in today and they were very kind and helping and because I had the protection plan on my old phone they said they could add it back and and say that the person who sold me the new phone had forgotten to transfer the plan to the new phone.
They told me to wait 2-3 before I bring it back in for repairs because they are usually not allowed to do this to an already broken phone but the manager gave the approval.
Just thought that I would poke back so anyone in this situation in the future will have a bit of hope. And that this is another reason why I continue to get my phones at best buy... great customer service (most of the time) and a protection plan that is too good to pass up.

Congrats. Great news for you.
Try not to shatter the screen on the next one, will ya?
And thanks for posting back. It's always good to hear how these things play out.
Put it this way its like buying a car with out "protection" and just that one day after the 30 days you run into a wall.. Take the car back and say hey I would like to get the protection plan. 99.99% they will ask let me see the car. Just as in example. Its a business. But I have the Black tie and the buy back on my phone because just in case I do drop it its cover, I had it on my last phone they sent it out for a repair go it back in like a week brand new could not even tell. Rather then going through att paying 5$s on it if it get stolen and having to pay a delectable. Heck I even got water on my phone and it was covered. So its worth it to me. On the phones think about its your MOBILE phone you have it on you all the time rather it be in your pocket in case or in case on a belt clip you always have that chance of missing your pocket and your phone slips. and BOOM broken screen. And then your like AHH!! FML! lol

I dont know about rapidly, but they have always been good about replacing my damaged phones. I went through 2 captivates (both took a swim) and they replaced them both, but the process took over 2 weeks. And on my last captivate they let me switch to the Inspire since the Captivate was out of stock.
Here is my update, I took it in a few days after I got the plan added and the guy who helped was very nice. They said that they were doing to do a rapid exchange (still not quite sure what that means but I think it is something along the lines of receiving a refurbished phone) and that they would get my "new" phone in within the next few days which is better than the 27 days I waited to receive my Captivate from being fixed a while back.
What sucks is that I am using my miserably slow iphone 3g until I get the new phone in.
One last question, if I am on the best buy reward zone silver level, does the extended 45 day return policy apply to cell phones? And if so, would I be able to exchange the refurbished inspire for the infuse and pay the difference even though they would have technically given me a refurbished phone?
Thanks!

Has anyone had any experience through the Phone Claim ? aka Asurion

So I have been reading that quite a few people believe that the phones given to you are pieces of dung.
Is this true? I have just placed a phone claim order as I have cracked my screen and between the cost of replacing the entire digitizer/lcd it is cheaper to get an entirely new one weird huh?
Anyways, for 5 bucks a month extra, hell why not.
I cracked my screen, (not the LCD but the glass on top) so that's what I have filed.
I am worried though that since I have rooted/changed ROM's on my phone they may raise question?
Should I worry? Although it seems that they will take my device anyways as the return rate (which is quite speedy) 1-2 days would not be able to catch my device in time for testing it and determining that it has been tampered with.
Though that is not the problem that I have stated rather that it is physical damage (which it is).
I'm just worried that I'm going to get something which might have been bricked, or something that was dropped, they said physically they look brand new.
I don't know... who has gone through this process?
I will have in two days time so I guess if anything, I'll let you guys know.
But at 180-200$ for just the screen vs. 125$ for a 'new' Infuse... hmmm
This was actually the WAY i got my infuse.....
i had the plan on my Captivate, i Bricked it and didnt want to by a Jig....so i told them i lost it and to send me another one. through some Att misshaps and a lil perssistance on my end they ended up giving me the infuse for free....but at any rate. i have not noticed anything janky about the phone. and my mother has just gotten her Captivate replaced as well. and again hers seems to ok as well.
if anything you can always send it back it doesnt work........they will just replace it again.
That sounds assuring. Can you run any tests (benchmark perhaps) to test for any irregularities?
Although you did say you don't really notice anything wrong.
Primarily I'm concerned for the fact that my brand new phone (supposedly) will be replaced by a possible refurb.
Oh well these devices must go through rigorous testing I'd like to think so.
Thank you for your input
FYI beginning in October, the monthly rate will increase to $6.99 and the deductible to $199.00! Thats $367.00 to replace a phone once over the course of a 2 year contract. What a deal!
Its a toss up. who's to say the phone your getting was not just Bricked. then all they had to do was reload and run there lil software and now the phone is ready to be sent to a new Customer. would you call that an old phone.....not everyone has Physical problems.
again, i have noticed nothing wrong with the phone i have. i change roms ALL THE TIME on both of them. i have bricked and unbricked both of them. the functions all seem to working.
i Hate their Customer Service, but the phones seem to be on the up and up.
This is also how I got my Infuse. Someone decided they wanted my Captivate more than me and took it.. I called Asurion and they tried to offer me an LG or a Motorola phone. I told them these options were unacceptable and I do not find them comparable to the Captivate.. They put me on hold and told me they would give me the Infuse.
All the replacement phones through Asurion are "refurbished". Even if the phone was damaged they replace anything and everything that has damage to it. I have had 0 problems with mine, it also came with a 2gb microsd card and a car charger
But you don't get that brand new smell
Alright, well if all of these claims are true, then I should be a happy man.
@jz3 - I can't help but think that your response is somehow sarcastic
Let me do the math... $600 phone for 2 years, plus ($98.00 x 12 months) 2 years
vs. $600.00 + ($100.00 x 12 months) 2 years
Option 1 - $2952.00 + $125.00 (first buy till moment of break)
Option 2 - $3000.00 + $125.00 (new phone) (after first phone)
I probably missed something... deductible does that only apply to when you actually order a phone?
Anyways... hopefully I won't be doing this again, what a sleek phone though, I've had probably three people who have held my phone exclaim how light it is (is that the right word?).
I just love the massive screen and of course the fact that we can change them
Thanks guys, I ran out of thanks so... here are some internet "thanks" to you and you and you
Where do they end up making up for their 'theoretical loss' ?
There are cheaper phone insurance providers
Just shop around. Their usual requirement is signing the policy within 30days of phone purchase.
here's one with a cheaper deductiable
http://www.ensquared.com/catalog/phone-insurance/2-year-phone-insurance-smartphone
I'm still with AT&T coverage but will mostly likely drop them for a cheaper provider on my next upgrade.
Google is your friend.
Wait a minute perhaps I'm not understanding the phone bill.
This is my first phone line under my name so I'm new to this.
I thought that because of the etra 5 a month I'm able to get a 'new' phone for 125 thats it then I keep paying my regular 91 a month plus the two more dollars (5-7).
Maybe I should look at my bill again

For sanitary purposes, EVERYTHING has to be replaced that could have been touched by the previous owner. Usually, the only thing reused is the actual motherboard for the phone. The case, mic, speaker, earpiece, etc has to be replaced.
I used Asurion when my microUSB port went bad on my Infuse, had no problems getting a replacement that has worked very well since. Sent them back a rooted/rommed phone and they didn't care at all

That's because when they get the phone, they don't look at the software at all. They put the motherboard into a new shell for the phone, and then use their software to send the phone back into stock (flashes bootloaders to, so it fixes bricked phones).
That's why they never figure out unless you get REAL unlucky.
Just a quick question, I had gotten a confirmation on a package being sent early this morning (boy they're fast) and I was curious if I should wipe everything on my phone and also if I should send them my micro sd card as well?
Also about setting up the new phone, how hard is that besides just placing the sim card in the phone (getting back onto the network and such) do I need to bring it into AT & T?
What else do I need to send in or just the phone itself?
I was told that there would be instructions in the package.
Wouldn't it be neat if I was able to pull the switch-aroo on them and pull out my motherboard on put it on the new phone that they sent me.

maybe cool, or just alot of work..........Keep the SD card. Keep the Cables. they just want the PHONE.
Well I'm already running the new phone (rooted at that) although I think I'm keeping this stock rom for now, (I flashed it earlier before the Infused 1.5) but I like this rom, it's efficient and at my use it does the job well.
The phone looks brand spanking new as others have said, the outside is entirely new, just the inside (didn't look so don't know if that is true based on my experience).
New accessories (very nice, now I can have dedicated USB chord and charger chord) .
It took me a while to figure out how to reset the crap load of numbers on the phone to register myself to the open airwaves (imagine the free service if you knew how to de-code so to speak).
So far I'm happy, I only had one weird issue at first, when I scrolled down on a webpage, half of the screen (looking at it landscape view) would not move with the rest so there was this clear dividing line in the middle of the page... weird.
It's not doing that anymore though.
Thanks for the input though guys, I'm happy
I hope my bill doesn't sky rocket to Venus.

The monthly service fee is not part of the cost of replacing a phone.
Cost of replaced phone with insurance = total amount of insurance premiums paid since last claim + any deductible.
Cost of replaced phone without insurance staying on same carrier= Cost to buy replacement phone either new, refurbished or second hand (ebay/craigslist)
Cost of replaced phone without insurance leaving carrier = ETF fee + Cost to buy new or replacement or second hand phone with or without contract on another carrier or mvno
All phones that are processed through Asurion have undergone a 50-75 point checklist, depending on the device.

[Q] What to tell t-mobile to get a warranty replacement?

So my mom managed to bend the prongs in the charging port so she cant charge her MT4GS.... She went into t-mobile and they said that they wont replace it because it was her fault. Is there something else we could say like it always drops signal or something so they will replace it for? She spent a lot on this phone back in August and she would hate for it to be useless already.... -_-
Tell them that the touch screen isn't responding and freezes a lot that's it.

And do it over the phone instead of going in.
Thats not right Xo My dad works in construction. He got a Otterbox Defender Series for his GSII. He wanted to test is out, ran it over with a semi. Screen broke got a huge crack #phone worked perfectly# they replaced it. Just say that your earphone jack wont work. The camera freezes. Youve restored it. Then it worked for a while, but it started acting up. Blame it on the software.

Since this device charges over the micro-usb connection, you're telling me she managed to break the internal connector?
That takes talent. You have to really try to break that. Really force the UBS plug in backwards.
I hate to tell you but unless she has insurance on it, she's screwed. Even if they process a warranty, if they find physical damage (and what you described is certainly physical damage) they will consider the device out of warranty and charge her account the out of warranty fee.
These devices are reviewed by a team given specifications by the manufacturer to look for specific things that the manufacturer deems physical damage, liquid damage, excessive use, etc.

If this is in fact the case, USB host support will probably be much trickier to implement, and a lot more risky to use. A hardware pathway will always be what it is. Software is more fickle, and has to be very closely checked and managed when dealing with something like this. If it's software that's regulating your power flow, you can very easily send too much to the wrong place and permanently break something.
Breaking a whole series of phones because we were too eager to release software that wasn't tested thoroughly enough would be a heavy blow to manufacturers agreeing to ship devices with S-OFF bootloaders.
I don't know if people have read up on that struggle, but one of the primary concerns against doing so was people overclocking their devices way above manufacturer specs, breaking them because they didn't know better, and manufacturers seeing a dramatic increase in returns. The cost to the companies like HTC for dealing with irresponsible end users was always one of the shields thrown up to justify shipping S-ON.
Since this is an overclock thread, and discussing USB host support is something else that could physically damage/destroy the device hardware - this is worth mentioning and making people aware of.
Search around on XDA and you'll see threads here and there over the last few years about what we've had to go through to get phones shipped S-OFF. The MT4GS wasn't, but the time is now for that to start happening. In the future most (if not all) phones will be coming S-OFF fresh out of the box.
I strongly urge anyone involved in overclocking or USB host support to be very cautious about what they are doing, and very aware of the potential damage they can do not just to a few peoples phones (which is bad enough) but to un-do years of hard work and lobbying by the open source community as a whole.

Phone manufacturers seeing an increase of returned phones that they have to eat the cost for because of something brain-dead or irresponsible the end user has done really hurts everyone.
The cost of phones go up, and while in this case specifically it has little to do with us finally getting S-OFF bootloaders on retail phones - the RMA total is just a number and isn't always broken down to specific causes when used as a statistic.
Any phones being returned that shouldn't be gets tallied up on a specific section of the balance sheet of a phone manufacturers (and to a smaller degree, cellular providers).
Now that we are finally starting to get phones shipped with S-OFF bootloaders, and the need for the amazingly brilliant work the Revolutionary release represents is fading, something like this is one small blow to that achievement.
The level of brilliance, creativity and dedication that had to come together for the MT4GS to get an aftermarket S-OFF bootloader blows my mind. The people who came up with the Revolutionary exploit are the kind of people that rocket scientists get intimidated by intellectually. (no exaggeration, they are the literal select few)
Think about how much more would be available to us as a community that we could do with our devices if people like that could focus their time on developing end-user applications or other software for the phone. Instead they are set with the next-to-impossible task of making it possible for all the rest of us to develop for these devices.
I know you don't see it as a big deal about finding a way for T-Mo or HTC to eat the cost of the broken phone, but the ripple effect of many people doing what is being suggested in this thread impacts issues most people would never think about, probably not even aware of.
I know it sucks to be saddled with the cost of breaking such an expensive piece of equipment. ultimately, though, the responsibility needs to rest on the shoulders of the person who actually caused it to happen.
What I would recommend is to look into an aftermarket repair service. There are some really good ones out there that specialize in high-end phones like the MT4GS.

Is to a place (in california, I think) that repairs phones - and shows a step by step on how to replace the screen on the MT4GS specifically.
I would start on their site, and see what it would cost to repair the USB port on the phone. It might not turn out to be that much, but this would be a great first step to take in finding out.
Like I started with, didn't want to just come out and say "too bad", I wanted to really explain why it's not a good thing for all of us to try to find a way to make the manufacturer pay for something that isn't their fault. I hope that providing you with a starting point to finding the resolution of the problem softens the blow a bit of having to hear that.
I wish the best of luck to you, and if you do get it repaired, maybe share the experience and the cost here for others to be made aware of.
I walked into my local tmo store, said "my phone is all messed up from the ota update, it doesn't even boot up all the way, I need it replaced under warranty since its been less than a year"
They asked for an address. I got the new phone in the mail a couple days later then brought my old one in so they could send it back for me.
They didn't even check out my phone in the first place. Look for the lazy employee

also a temporary fix would be getting an external battery charger.
Ya I've done 4 exchanged for my chicks mytouch and they never ask to ts.. we just say it keeps getting a deadstop on the screen..

Just tell them it's having an issue that you know they can't/won't spend the time to replicate.
My phone randomly restarts
My screen goes blank and I have to take the battery out
When I click the camera it always tells me "Cannot connect to camera"
OP, your mom broke the phone - plain and simple. It's not a hardware failure, and as much as it sucks she needs to suck it up and buy a new one.
People bullshitting warranty returns on items they broke only drive up the costs for everyone else.
Alright.. well I'll be straight up honest with you.
I can't imagine how that happened to your phone. Obviously it is a user mistake, and thus it doesn't legitimately qualify for a warranty replacement.
You have the choice to take it in to get fixed, I'm sure there are many people who can do the repairs in your area. It might cost you upwards of $50 (don't quote me on that)
You can call T-mobile, and BS your way through the warranty department to get them to send you a new one, like everyone else has said. From an ethical stand point, you don't need me to tell you that's wrong, because it's lying and essentially cheating. If you choose to go that way, you will be required to pay $15 for shipping and handling, however that does not stop there. T-mobile WILL inspect your phone. Most of the time, people get away with it, but I have had a friend who tried to cut through the system and got caught (he cracked his screen and filed it as the OTA update ruined his phone). The consequence is simple, you pay full price for your replacement phone (which would be several hundred dollars). Moreover, your replacement phone isn't even a new phone, it is a refurbished device which might only just look new. Back in the day when I still had my G1, the sliding hinge came loose like it did on a bunch of them so I got a warranty replacement on it. The one they sent me came with two dead pixels on the screen, but I just didn't want to fork out another $15 to get a replacement.
So really, you can pay the money to get it fixed, and it'll still be your phone, the new phone that you paid for. Or you can cheat and send it back, pay the $15 and risk getting caught and having to pay a couple hundred for a refurbished phone.
Yeap, Its ALWAYS better to do it over the phone. Sound frustrated but not angry and they'll always kiss your butt.
Actually they chargre 130 if the phone has damage and u lie to get a warranty replacement. They don't charge full price

I can confirm this. However, in my case it was legit. I was charged for the water detector sticker being pink although it was never dropped in water and the reason for my returning the phone wasn't water related at all. The hinge was loose as hell on my phone and I wanted this taken care of. The only reason why the sticker was pink was due to having wet hands when inserting my battery into the phone since I don't ever charge my phone via USB and use a separate wall charger and just swap batteries when I need to charge my batteries.
Well sorry to the people who are against wasting warranty replacements but money is tight and the replacement is on the way and believe me I was post when I found out she some how broke the USB port -.- but she said my little sister tripped on it while it was charging and that's when it broke!

Wierd enough i just came home to find my warranty replacement from asurion.... And to my suprise they sent me a new phone in the mytouch box with the important stickers on the side of the box. I lost my phone and i decide to file a claim which i had to pay 130. However the first phone they sent me was a refurbish one it did not came in the mytouch box and looked used. I found out it had 4 missing pixels so i call asurion to get a warranty replacement and they send me a new one. Now i get to keep the 2 batteries and 2 chargers because they say they only want the phone not the battery or back cover or charger. Anyone experience something like this before?
Like really they decide to send me a refurb phone after i paid for a new phone because i lost my phone and i get a brand new warranty replacement? Wtf thats just so wierd to me

Warranty replacement is different...you had an insurance claim and yes Asurion will usually send a refurbished but I have yet to get a refurb that wasn't obviously flawed within an hour of use...you call and complain they will overnight a new one at that point. Warranty would be if it broke and not your fault...and I have only had to pay 5 bucks for the both my replacement phones but I think it is cause i have the full insurance plan...warranty should cover all fees to replace but oh well. You agree when they go to send you a replacement that there is not physical damage or such so don't be surprised when you get a nasty charge on your bill....

Sorry i was talking about the OP on that one

Replacement phone question.

I've had my shift since feb. Rooted since day one.
Phone works, keyboard works, speakers work, everything works. Battery seems to drain faster, but hell, its a year old and gets used extensively.
I have the $8 insurance thing through them since day one. Never once used it.
My phone has been dropped more times than a $10 crack whore. Dented, scratched, chipped, etc. But as I said, all works.
Do you guys think sprint would replace it with a new phone under the insurance plan? Has anyone done this? Does it have to be broken to be replaced? Does the deductable apply? Should I try to replace it in a sprint store, radio shack, or does it have to be done via phone/snailmail?

If the phone is still in good working order, cosmetic damage will not get you a replacement. Unless that damage is to the screen ( cracked screen ) . If your screen is just scratched they will not do it. As for a good place to try and possibly get a replacement. I would try the Sprint Authorized Repair CenterIt's where when I've had an issue with my phone It's been resolved every time. But experiences vary a lot from what I've heard.
Or if you really want a new phone just throw it on the floor till it does break and say someone tried stealing it and it fell in the middle of the street while a car ran over it
Find a friend at a sprint store and have them send you a REPLACEMENT. ASURION IS A LAST RESORT.
Thanks guys. I don't know if there's a repair center around here, but I'll check.
As far as the "accident", I've considered many options. Such as a drop in the potty during #2... and bringing it to the store in a bag with poo attached. Bet I wouldn't even have to unroot!!!
I will probably try the replacement path first. The salesman I used was a straight up guy, or seemed to be. I may take a ride up to huntsville this weekend and see if he still works there. Hopefully.
I guess I'm foolish for not knowing, but the insurance that comes from a true sprint store, is that assurion? I thought it was something they handled directly. I guess the confusion comes from different posts I've seen here. Didn't one of you guys break hinges a while back and get a new phone? What was your situation as far as sprint, insurance, etc.?

Well the cofusion usually comes from Sprint spliting up what they do " in house " , vs what they call an " insurance claim ". Although from my understanding if you do not have T.E.P. , then you cannot make an insurance claim. They do have guide lines, but I've seen different stores interperate them differently. The biggest thing IMO is that if they do not resolve the problem in house ( at the repair center / store ) then they try and make it an insurance claim. You then have to contact Insurian, that realy sucks. Because then you most times end up paying the deductable, which is now $100 .
my earpiece went out last saturday. i brought it to a repair center and they kept it for a few hours. They told me they couldn't fix it, so they ordered me a new one, but it was on backorder and didn't know when it will be in. Been calling everday and a no go.

updated reply from me: DO NOT REPLACE YOUR ORIGINAL PHONE IF THE ONLY PROBLEM IS COSMETIC DAMAGE.
I have swapped 3 Evo Shifts already. I speak from experience. I actually sent the last replacement back because the microphone did not work properly.

[Q] Verizon Warranty Exchange

I have a Warranty dilemma that I thought maybe someone else has experienced.
I had a legitimate warranty issue, called Verizon and they sent out the new phone next day overnight shipping. Currently no exterior damage to the old phone. Literally the day that the new phone is supposed to be coming I dropped my old phone and even though I have never cracked a screen before fate would have it that I crack one the day I am supposed to be exchanging it.
First of all it is a very fine crack in one of the corners of the screen and you almost can’t even see it unless you really look closely or feel it with a fingernail. There is also a small scratch on the corner of the aluminum case now.
Option 1: Should I just send the old phone back anyways and hope that they don’t notice the crack in the screen and scratch on the case? I’ve read on this forum that all they do is see if the phone turns on and then they move on to the next one? Could result in paying the $229 fine for the phone being damaged.
Option 2: Call Verizon tell them what happened send back the phone they sent me and instead do a cracked phone replacement through HTC's website which supposedly does a onetime replacement phone for things like breaking your screen.
Option 3: Keep the new phone without sending back the old phone and hope they dont notice. I actually did this in the past once and they never charged or contacted me about it. Ive heard that they dont really track to see if you turn in the old phone but that was some time ago and I dont know if that is still the case.
Sure would be nice if they had a way to still do a warranty exchange for the legitimate issue while also paying them a lesser amount to pay for the cracked screen but I guess they dont have that option.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

I've done plenty of warranty exchanges with Verizon. Best bet is to call Verizon and tell them what happened. Send the old one back. This way you don't feel guilty or have to lie about certain things. VZW won't care. Or another option is to just send it back without calling them. I'd advise you to call them though so they can note it in your account. They don't play as fast and loose as they used to. They sent me 2 HTC Thunderbolts and when I called they said I could sell one if I wanted to. It costs them a good amount of money per warranty exchange. That's why there is a $100 deductible now with the $10/mo warranty.
