Dead pixel. Having 2nd thoughts. - Onetouch Idol 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've since then requested a return slip via Amazon since I saw a dead pixel last night while watching a video. When the video cut to a black screen, I noticed a tiny little blue dot that was not part of the video. I've confirmed it via some pixel checker apps and it is indeed a dead pixel. This is somewhat an eye opener as to the quality of this phone. I love the phone, but the hardware and even customer support lacks a lot. I've sent numerous emails to customer support with no reply back. And it wasn't even about anything major. It's not just the dead pixel that sparked this thought about returning the phone. As many have said, the tap to wake feature is iffy and only works when it wants.
I'm afraid to try my chances again with this phone, but I've been back to the basics of researching into another device. Gut instincts should've went with the HTC One M9. But the amazing price of this phone was hard to pass up. For anybody who has since returned this phone (and hopefully still lurk this subforum) could you let me know why you returned it and which phone you got to replace it? I might press my luck again and buy it again once I receive my refund. Hoping I get one from another recent batch.

Just an update...I sent back the phone today to Amazon for a full refund and in the meantime I ordered another one just so I can get a replacement quicker rather than having to wait 2-6 days for my refund to show up then order another one, but this time I placed an order through Alcatels main website and during checkout it asked me to select shipping speed and there was Standard, 2 day and 1 day, and for the hell of it I wanted to see how much 1 day shipping was and the total said it was 0.00 and the final cost was still only $249.99 which is the main cost of the phone. I was able to successfully place my order with the 1 day shipping method for 0.00. Not sure if my order will still go through but it will be interesting to see.

You should've stuck with Amazon tho, because if something else happens it easier to go thru Amazon for return then thru Alcatel

Yeah I thought about that after I purchased through Alcatel. Thing is, the phone was shipped via Amazon and it even said so during the checkout process. So if anything goes wrong I might still be able to return it hassle free.

You will not be able to return through Amazon so easily. That's what happened to me when I got this for my wife. We actually had to go through a ton of freaking hoops(according to my wife) to make it happen.
We were supposed to send it straight to alcatel and wait 3 weeks. My wife did her thing (whatever that is) and was able to have them do it through Amazon.

Hmm. Well hopefully this replacement phone won't have any flaws. Right away I noticed the box was in better condition than the last one and it seems the speakers are louder. I must've got one from a new batch because I didn't have to install the startup update since it came preinstalled already. So its a newer device it seems. Oh well. Thanks for your input I'll remember that if I ever have to return it again.

Amazon sucks balls when it comes to getting packages in good condition. Every single thing that I have purchased from them this year so far has come in an extremely damaged box. UPS does not give a crap for sure!!!

I rarely order directly from Amazon's fulfillment just based on their rule of ordering $35 or more for free shipping if I wanted something for only $10. I usually go the third-party route who offer free shipping with reliability. But since Alcatel only uses Amazon's fulfillment center, I had no choice. But yeah my first Idol 3 box was smashed in the corner and had weird water stain marks on the front and sides. I had a feeling it was going to be a defective unit just from the box.

Returned My 2ND G2X , Now Im Stuck With Blackberry :-(

Im so depressed lol. Blackberry sucks. I remember when i use to love their phones. Now that i have been long exposed to android i dont know what to do without them. Here's my story: First G2X blew out on me during a call and i returned it. The rep in the store couldnt turn it on and try to find signs of water damage which there werent any. Second G2X had serious bleeding in the upper corner. I tried to disregard it but im very anal about my devices especially when i buy them outright. I returned it and got credit on my account that supposedly cant be touched unless i notify tmobile. My friend works for tmobile and told me a new shipment is coming in a little after Mothers day. So ill try my luck again and hopefully get a good unit. I dont really suggest anyone buy one via craigslist or ebay but as you can see most sellers are not accepting returns. Wish me luck guys.
i work at a tmobile store and we get shipments every business day. no deliveries saturday/sunday
dont know why they wouldn't be getting anything til after mothers day. plus we only get notifications 4 days ahead of time of what the shipment contains.

Did you use a debit card or cc? They dont give you money back? I'm thinking about returning mine... They give you store credit back?
was this a corporate owned location?
we always give full refunds within 14 days of purchase for contract extensions and 30 days of purchase for full-price. if it was through a third party retailer it would make much more sense as to why they only give you credit.
it was a tmobile seller not a tmobile retailer. they said i can use the credit to go to a actual tmobile store to purchase it. im waiting because i dont want any problems. i know all cell phones have issues but i would rather have a issue that can be fixed by a soft mod or something.
You should wait for the Samsung Galaxy S2. The super amoled plus screen should be awesome. I miss my Samsung Vibrant screen, but I'm happy with my LG G2X overall.

is that true about the 30 days for full price purchasers? or is that california only? i bought mine online from tmo. i never heard of this policy. can more than one person confirm this please?
Just got G2X for the wife, fast phone. There is slight bleeding but very minor and how many G2x I have to go through for it to be perfect.
I'm waiting for SGS2 myself. Superamoled has more pop to its colors. G2X has more natural white. Superamoled + should be better and bigger screen.

as far as i know the 30 day policy for full price is nation-wide in corporate retail stores.
it prints out the policy on every single one of our receipts on the bottom, and i'd imagine it would do that in the whole country as well.
My story:
My phone had bleeding/rebooting issues so I decided to exchange.
Called T-Mobile and explained the issues.
CCR told to pack it and send it to T-Mobile Return Center and call them as soon as I shipped it with the tracking number and they will send me the exchange right away. (cool)
I went to my UPS online account, created a shipping label (with tracking number).
Called T-mobile again and told them:
- I just sent my defective phone back here is the tracking number ........ .
CCR started ordering my replacement (took some time, apparently was having a hard time).
At the end, CCR said to me: Okay I had to cancel your order and we will reimburse your money in a couple of days, and we will need to make a new order. (thats when it came to me)
- Can I bye it at my local store so if it has any problem I can exchange in-store?
CCR: Sure thats very smart of you.
No restocking fee, they will pay my shipping.
Already bought it at the store and will be sending the other one tomorrow.
- The new one has the same bleeding problem, same poor signal strengths. At least I haven't had any reboot YET. Will wait for a couple of days without rooting to make sure it is not a rooting issue.

thanks. i think alot of people are under the assumption it's 14 days. thanks for pointing that out. i have 10 days after today, got mine last tuesday. mine has slight bleed in top right corner only.room has to be dark to see it. and even with gingerbread black status bar, the clock will hide it. or should. i really hate to return it. it's a great phone. and too many exchange nightmares out here. and....nothing better coming out anytime soon. sensation looks nice.....nice and locked though. what would you do? i think i'm just gonna keep it and keep bugging lg. i started a thread in their forum. and i've been emailing them. no response yet. i'm telling them i demand they personally replace my screen with a non defective one. we'll see how far that goes.

i work in a tmobile store and always check every g2x before it goes out. pretty much every single one i've seen has had some sort of bleeding (opened at least 15 boxes in store)
so honestly i think the best bet is to get a replacement or repair done by LG directly instead of just exchanging it for another one.
my g2x also has a bit of bleed, but i'm going to wait till CM7 comes out to see if its noticeable or not.
everyone should keep in mind that these phones do come with a 1yr manufacturers warranty, and the screen bleed issue does fall under that warranty. so even if you miss your tmobile exchange window, you're still covered.

[Q] RMA'd

Hey guys,
Sorry if you've seen alot of posts like this. I've tired to look around for information and I couldn't get a clear answer. My issue is:
I just got the Nexus 5, and its loaded with green stuck pixels, so I called Google Customer support to see if I could get an exchange. They told me about the RMA process. I was sent a link to re-order the phone, with a shipping time of '3-4 weeks' mind you. But my main question that no one answered for me was simple... Do I get a brand new retail model? With new box, charger and cable? or do i get a replacement model similar to Apple. Can someone help me out and let me the answer to this.
You get a brand new phone with box and accessories.
Since this is the first post I've seen on rma, I think you have more answers than anyone else. But I'm going to be watching just on case I run into any issues.
If it's like the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7, you get a brand new phone if you have an issue in the 12 month warranty. Only if it's bought from the Play Store, obviously.
This phone just came out. How wil they find a refurbished for you lol of course you will get brand new.
Just because a device is brand new doesn't mean that a company hasn't made 'service' models for replacement... I.E Apple..
Let me know how it goes please. I've just noticed 7 or 8 dead pixels (black) dotted around my screen. I'm gonna call up tomorrow and see what they say.
Just sent the phone back to be RMA'd. Google paid for the shipping, used the box that it came in. I'm really ticked off though. I honestly can't believe that Google doesn't have any phones set a side for defects or customer issues. Its crazy that now I have to wait 3-4 weeks to get my replacements device. I'm not saying that I'm more important than folks who ordered the device later or anything, but geez. I am happy though I'm getting a brand new device (I hope, the jury is still out if it will be brand new , we can only go off what google has done in the past with other RMA's). Google, there has to be a better way...

When I've done replacements in the past (and yes, replacements during the 15-day return period are new devices), I've waited until the replacement device arrived before sending back the first unit. Did they tell you to send in your device immediately? That's odd, because they place a hold on your credit card to be sure you send the original back once they've sent the replacement--doesn't make much sense to place a hold if you send back the original first.
Yea, I was told the same. But I figured since I was off today, might as well get it done. I have a phone I can use until then

I thought the same. But I figured with all the stuck pixels. I'll take my chances. I want to be happy for 399 or 450 with tax and shipping out of pocket.
LG should have it figured out by now. A couple pixels on 50 inch screen, ok I get it ... It's the type of technology. But come on. The display is 5 inches. That's a small slice from a T.V. And Apple is no different. Same issues with pixels. I don't want to watch a movie, or look at a photo with a bright green dot in the corner or center of the screen.

I called in today about stuck pixels on my phone too. I didn't get an RMA email yet though. So basically you get a link and you just order a phone from the Play Store as if you were buying for the first time?

Hate when they open my phone!

I just went to my local T-Mobile to pick up an HTC One M8. I went to the store to save time on shipping. However as soon as I went in there I regretted it.
The guy would not give up trying to sell my useless accessories I was not interested in. Then he went and got the phone and when he came back he already had all his grubby hands around it. I was boiling but didn't say anything because the damage had been done. I don't even understand why they need to open the phones. I like to unpackaged things myself.
They completely ruin the experience. I am considering going back to the store right now and returning it for one sealed in the box. What do you guys think?

I think you should package your phone back up, mail it to yourself and then unbox it.
A few reasons I can think that they "handle" your new phone:
1. To make sure it turns on and works properly before you leave with it.
2. To make sure all the accessories that it's supposed to come with it are in the box.
3. To install your SIM card.
1 and 2 might be a requirement for the employees for liability/anti-scam reasons.

If they brought you a unpacked model then
I think you should have said it right then that you want a packed model
If they opened it in front of you then thats your fault you shouldnt have let them
If it bothers you so much you should have told the seller right away. There is supposed to be a seal on the box which says "do not accept when the seal is broken" (or something similar to this). Thus, I think you could have complained and asked for an sealed box. However, I am not sure whether the seller would exchange the phone now after you have already taken it home...
I've always had the same problem when going to get a new phone.
I would go and change it; tell them something is wrong with it like it turns off randomly, that's something they can't test manually.
For now on when you go in tell them to not open it and that you know how to do it, works for me every time.

Ice Dot View Case Hinge tearing?

Hi all,
I have an official HTC Dot view case for my M9, the ICE version (with the transparent back) but I have found that just after a month of normal use, the hinge is starting to tear from the inside, just where it is connected to the hard transparent back.
I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this.
I'm going to try and get a replacement from the store as I am surprised at the quality issue with this one, just hope it's a one off.
I've never had this issue with my m8 Dot View case.
Same exact thing happened to me, in about 2 weeks. I went to the Verizon store where I bought it, and they offer 14 day returns, and my entire front flap ripped off at 15 days.
I even reached out to HTC, and they said that you have to get warranty thru the store you bought it at. Needless to say, I'm really ****ing pissed, and only saw this post when I came here to find a new case. It just really pisses me off that I got roped into the m9 due to the dotview case, and it ****ing fell apart in 2 weeks. Nice flagship case for your flagship phone, HTC. Ya jerks.

Luckily I bought mine at best buy, I couldn't get my money back because they have the 15 day policy, but I was able to get store credit and switched to the otterbox. My ice case tore right at the 30 day mark.
That doesn't seem right, HTC should have a standard product warranty. They are willing to give another device through uh-oh protection, but not a case? That's a noodle scratcher if I've ever heard one.
Another ripped case here, after a month of use, contacted HTC, they said to go to the supplier, even though i purchased the case through the HTC Website... It's a bit of a joke and then the online chat rep eventually told me to try contact expansy's which doesn't make any sense either. Ordered a new spiegen slim case anyway now but still trying to claim my compensation back
I had a lengthy discussion with htc support and they basically told me to contact the retailer.
When I told them they are responsible for warranty claims, they basically told me they can't fulfil their own warranty policy.
Really its a joke, if I had the time and energy I would take them to court, as this is clearly illegal.

Same thing is happening to mine! Found this topic through a search. Really disappointed but haven't reached out to anyone yet. Bottom of hinge barely on now. Really wanted this case and it's such a let down.
Does anyone know if that can happen with the first version of the dot view case for the m9?

Anything is better than the original, poorly maid, probably to have consumers buy multiple cases to help HTC make up for quarterly revenue
I just noticed that HTC did 2 different Dot View cases for the M9, the Ice which is transparent back and the normal one which is like the M8 Dot view.
Do you think only the Ice version has problems?
What do you think about this case? http://www.amazon.com/case-Rock-Ult...p/B00VND5HQK/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8

The only thing I can say is the grey backed one is the one I had on the m8, never had an issue with it.
My gut feeling would be it only effects the ice cases, which is doubly irritating as that is supposed to be the more premium one...

Don't ask mate...
I went to the store first, but they are just a bunch of idiots..
I thin kI told you before I had a run in at the store before, this time was no different.
They told me they couldn't do anything about it in store and I should call HTC.
I can post the log from my conversation with HTC, they basically said they can't fulfil their own warranty policy and I should go back to CPW..
I really didn't want to go back to the store and waist another hour of my life debating with the knobs there, so decided to call CPW instead.
The woman on the phone sorted it out for me after me explaining my road towards my call with her...
Best bet would be to call them.
Maybe mention there seems to be a real issue with this case and maybe they can push HTC from their side to do something about it....
Man, it makes my head hurt already knowing that I probably will be doing the same after another months worth of use, as the new dot view case shows hairline cracks in the rubber already....
Yeah distinct lack of effort on cases this time, 3 **** colours and low quality imho, bottom of my case is not nicely drilled and has tiny bits of discoloured rubber where it hasn't been done properly.

that's because the "htc accessories website" is operated by expansys. i don't even know if that's the real official website.
the same happened to mine ICE case, i am still waiting for reply from expansys.
Ok went to the store (same store I actually had my online delivery that gave me it 4 days early - so pretty chill / clueless guys but regardless awesome because of it.
They weren't sure on the warranty policy so put me through to customers services. Without evening asking for name/number they told me the warranty was 6 months (which I actually believe is incorrect but serves purpose) and that the store should be able to replace it.
I had the nice lady repeat this for an employee. Boom, job jobbed.
Actually quite obvious on the tearing when the phone is out of the case.
Confirmation from "head office" was all they needed which I assume they meant customer services.
Would encourage everyone to do this to be honest, although a fan of HTC, they should not get away with low quality "premium" accessories and if this has an inherent fault then it needs to be sorted out.
Don't be afraid and if needed point them to this thread, might even start getting this talked on Elevate as I am disappointed in the variety of cases this year and miss my Orange M8

I already posted this on elevate, not really a great deal of response there, just a few others who have similar issues but no response from HTC...
Interesting fact to add is the HTC warranty team I spoke to over the phone had no idea what HTC elevate is...
expansys will also change my case. they say that the first series had a problem that is now solved. will see in a month i guess.

Well I don't believe that for a start
Secondly, no reason to be believe this isn't going to happen to my second case, can already see a gap.
Thirdly, nice of HTC to mention it :s

another dead pixel thread; possibly high defect rate?

hey all,
just wanted to share a few notes on my experience with the pixel 3 xl and google support. part cautionary tale, part just feeling bitter.
tl;dr: high defect rate has possibly depleted stock of new devices (that would be set aside specifically for replacements), now only replacing with refurbs? possible 3rd party wireless charging issue?
i purchased my p3xl direct from google. the first one died in about 4 days. it wouldn't turn on and no combinations of buttons would give me even a screen flicker. then a day later, it suddenly came back to life. no explanation, no errors. i factory reset it, set it back up, rooted it, etc...
it died again the next day. i RMA'd it, and the day before my replacement arrived, it just came back on. it was weird and i was feeling paranoid, so i set up the new one and started using it. i kept the original one running and just played around with it, until the last few days before i HAD to send it in. it never once dropped again. i sent it back, keeping the new replacement.
2 months later, my 2nd one is dead. it seems to be the same issue, won't respond to anything. i used the stock charger, tried my partner's pixel 3 charger & cables, connecting it to my laptop, the charger for my old nexus (with a USB-C adapter) -- each for 6 to 10 hours. i'm still holding out a glimmer of hope that it will kick back on long enough for me to pull everything off it. i have a whole list of links to other threads on XDA and reddit with the magic button combo that people used to turn theirs back on, but many people are just getting it replaced.
so.. after a day of panicked research and a spreadsheet full of "button combo", "time held", "button released first", "result" desperation and sadness, i RMA'd it. this time they will only replace it with a refurb device. i escalated this over email, chat, twitter... but i kept getting the same message:
I understand that you're looking for a new device as a replacement. Please be informed that we have a finite number of new devices manufactured, and I'm sorry to inform that we wouldn't be able to send out a new device as a replacement, but rest assured our replacement devices undergo a comprehensive process to ensure a high standard of quality before they are shipped.

my read on this that they're getting way more returns than they expected... thoughts?
all this said: i've been really loving the p3xl -- my brother has one, my gf has the p3. they love 'em and have had no problems. so yesterday i caved and ordered the replacement (refurb), but i'm pissed that (a) my phone is in perfect condition and i take really good care of it (shout out to whitestone dome, that thing is amazing!), and (b) i feel like i'm out 200$ish that is the diff between a new vs. refurb device and the cost of a new whitestone dome glass.
literally the only diff i can tell between myself, my brother, and my gf is that i have a tylt wireless charger that i drop my phone on when i'm going to bed. works great with my nexus, seemed like it was working fine for the pixel (albeit only slow charging). in my googling, i saw a couple of threads where people complained that a wireless charger had damaged their battery which is what pointed me this direction, but i honestly have no idea if it's really a factor.
so i'm sort of curious about other people's stories... are you running in to the same issues? did the magic button combo work? can you think of any reason why yours died in the first place?
thanks!
I can't comment from a bad experience, but I have ran the gambit of wired chargers through my 3xl but only ever used the pixel dock for wireless, due to my case (otterbox defender) it will only slow charge while the case is on, but I haven't had an issue, not trying to rub this in, just giving you another data point.
I have had mine for months, using it on the Pixel Stand nightly (with a case on). No issues so far.
Honestly, it's a big hit or miss with their "refurbished" devices. I've had multiple replacements ranging with big scratches 1.5 - 2 inches on the display. Buzzing earpieces and ****ty sounding speakers etc. They say their replacements go through a comprehensive check to make sure they're 100% mechanically sound. To me it seems like Google just stuffs in returned devices and ships them off as warranty exchanges. They just hope that the next person that gets it doesn't notice the defect and accepts the rubbish they dish out. But there is some light at the end of the tunnel if you deal with too many replacements. You can get your case escalated and they can refund you the total of the phone as a return 100% and you can get your money back. Then, if you wish, you can order a brand new one and at that point you'll have a brand new warranty and be guaranteed a new device for 2 weeks. I went through a similar fiasco for radio problems and speakers going out, but I have never faced your issue yet. I ended up getting a refund and bought a new Pixel 3 XL when they had the $200 off promotion so that was awesome! Best of luck!

Similar situation with me but for constant flashing making the phone unusable for hours at a time. I was 17 days out of purchase and they refused to send me a new device, only a refurb. I could have gotten my money back as you described above but I bought it at the $200 off price and that promotion is expired. So my options were a refurb (they spout the exact same line about testing which is total BS) or spending an extra $200 for a new one. I have the Pixel 3 not the XL. These devices are flawed in a major way. The only thing they can do at this point is give free replacements to those experiencing problems. New and not refurbished. Throw all those away or give them away, they are useless. I wonder what the statistics are on returns. My wife has one since November with not one single issue. I'm on my 5th in the past month or so.

wow, that's a great piece of info - thanks! i'll see how the refurb works out, but yeah, mine is in pristine condition, i'm not going to accept a replacement with scratches.

i really think that this is why they're only doing refurbs now.. they probably used up all their "set aside for returns"-new devices already. makes me wonder if we're just all recycling each others non-functioning devices at this point..

good to know. most of the "wireless charging broke my phone" threads do seem to be contained to 3rd party chargers, if the replacement works out, i might grab one of the pixel stands. thx!

That's why I wouldn't accept a refurb. It cost me but I will get it back in the end. I had to pay for a new device, wait for it, transfer the info, send back the old piece of crap and wait for my refund. I don't care. I'm not getting some POS refurb when my device was only 17 days old and flashed like a lightning storm in June. So I'm going to test it as best I can in the coming days once I receive the new one. Any sign of anything and I'm outta here. Perhaps for good. It's just not worth it at this point when other devices are better. Used to the Nexus 5 at half the price of other phones, rootable, no problems with apps, stuff like that. Those days are over. Unfortunately.

i know, right? i'm back on my nexus 6 awaiting the replacement... despite the cracked screen, it's still a solid device.
It amazes me how lucky I must have been. Had to get my device from a third party with no chance of returning.
Why is Google quality control so freaking bad?
Plus if you complain on their support forum they just delete your post!
