Cellebrite Pwning Android - Security Discussion

I was originally going to pm this link to a few but figured others might still have never seen these. This particular vid is the cellebrite removing lock screens on Samsung devices. Have not yet done any research into their software or hardware but it might be of use to some current projects here.

It is an old, and now patched, vulnerability. I ended up with a call recently from a drug taskforce, because it no longer worked.

I would like to revisit this thread to access the current state of cellibrite UFED features against android.
Does any1 know of a working strategy against cellebrite UFEDs? Disabling MTP app and KIES USB / USB settings would be enough (owner of an Edge+ here)? I don´t have access to a cellebrite unit, but I would like to hear from you guys if there is anything that I can do to keep my cellphone private. Please consider stock rom and no rooting... (if possible).
So far, I have disabled more than 170 packages, including USB related ones. USB debbuging is off. The whole idea is to keep phone data inaccessible to external access through the USB, considering that the phone itself is locked with a complex password.
Thanks in advance!

Security

Alright. Just got my Infuse last month. I picked this phone for specific reasons. Nevermind that. What I am curious about is this:
How secure are custom ROMs?
I know...noob. However, I have read a lot about it...or attempted to anyway. I am not finding much in the way of a technical explanation of why custom ROMs are secure.
Because of the nature of what I do, I need things to be pretty locked down.
I used to have a cappy, which I flashed a few ROMs to, and eventually bricked. But again, my job deals with personal info in my gmail inbox. I can't compromise that.
Alright, super long blabfest cut short: how secure are any of these ROMs?
Thanks for reading, thanks for writing, and most of all, thanks to the Devs!!!

I don't think anybody has had any "security" issues. I mean after all they are or most of them are Samsung based roms, just with mods and themes applied to them.

I am not a Dev, but I understand a little regarding software security from my software hack days.
Running these Custom ROMs are secure, it's your individual setting per app is where you manage your security. There are software apps free and paid, I have tried Norton apps for security on the Infuse, check it out its free and I believe it has a trial period. I understand what your concern, I have 4 email accounts that I run, with a govt email being forwarded to one of the four.
As per google's policy, they can retain your info (including personal) indefinitely. They could share non personal info like browsing habits with their partners. Personal info would be divulged law enforcement officers when request comes in through proper channels. This is the norm with all online providers.
If you are talking about encryption and such stuff, make sure you enable strong passwords (not simple pattern based or number based).
Also set the option in settings to disable USB debugging when phone is locked. This will prevent connecting and issuing adb commands at system level.
Set up software like avast to send remote commands to phone when you feel its lost to erase the phone as first step.
When you try to install stuff from market, see for what permissions it uses. If you are uncomfortable, and the vendor isn't a well known entity, don't install such software.
These are some basic measures you could try employing. 100% security is something not achievable, cos if it were, we wouldn't be having so many people/companies working on anti virus software.

I think this is only for browsers. On phone, once setup, it stays.
@OP: In case you lose your phone, change your gmail password on computer, and it will auto disconnect the email and market on phone.
There are several apps on the market, Cerberus and Lookout, for example, that will let you remote wipe your phone if it gets lost or stolen. Also they allow you to send text messages to your device or email messages to turn on wifi/gps and locate it, send you back information, set off the alarm, etc.
There's also an app called Divide iirc, that lets you set up a 'work' and 'personal' data/app profile, so when you hand off your phone to someone or take it into work, you can set it into work mode, and your personal data is unavailable until you switch back.

Dude. I'm not going without a smartphone. Before I bricked it, I had teamhacksung's ICS on it. There's no way I'm going to have a dumbphone. It's hard enough going back to Froyo and Touchwiz.
I work in an industry that by its very nature is mobile. I understand that transmitting data & putting stuff in the cloud carries some risk. What I want to understand better is whether I am adding to that risk by getting rid of official firmware and installing something that isn't.

I have been using Lookout. I have tried a few security apps, but I've also read a few articles that seem to indicate that it's unclear whether some of those apps work because there has been few widespread outbreaks.
My primary concern is the relative security of my clients' data. Their email could be hacked before it ever gets to me too. But, after spending a month with TouchWiz, I am drooling over some of the ROMs I'm seeing here. Particularly interested about Revelation.

To be honest, the custom ROMs here are more secure than the stock one, with an exception that they are rooted. But by enabling certain options I mentioned above, this can be overcome (I am referring to disabling USB debugging when screen is locked).
Also, the ROM devs go to lengths to incorporate any security loopholes that they find out. Best example was the loggers on most HTC phones that logged even sensitive info like passwords. The devs here took care of taking it out from their ROMs.

This is a relative flaw in android that it currently does not support device level encryption like blackberry. BBs go the extent of not even showing contacts and requiring a full reset of device on things like SIM change. Android still doesn't have this feature. There are some workarounds though that we could employ to use this wonderful OS.
Most security apps today (like avast; I am not marketing this app, but this is one of apps I tried that is free and has a hell load of options) can be configured at system level as device admins. And they have options that can help keep them alive even after a full system reset (helps save from majority of users).

---------Original Thread---------
I recently picked up an Appradio 2 from Pioneer. The premise is good but the excecution is poor IMO.
The app seems overly complicated and quite frankly pisses me off the more i use it.
Now what i would like to know is if the app can be modified to just offer control of the MHL mirror. That would be ideal for me. At points within the app it allows you to control the screen via the touch screen on the appradio 2. Then at certain places it doesn't allow any touch or only touch portions of the screen.
I have very minimal knowledge of programming for android so i cannot tackle it myself. Im also willing to start a bounty for this as well if someone shows some interest.
Here is the apk: Link
Anyone up for the task?
I just got one of these earlier today. I was very excited at the "Android" support. I haven't installed it yet (buying a washer and dryer takes forever!), but I hope to do it tomorrow.
Did you do your install or did you have somebody do it for you?
Also, have you messed with navigation through phone at all? What cables does it need? I know it needs an MHL for my SGS2, but where can I find the cable that plugs into the back of the unit?
Its a simple straight forward install. The cable in the back is a full size HDMI that comes out of the mhl adapter.

Where did you put your nav antenna and your microphone?

So I was really excited about getting this, but it sounds like everyone that's gotten it has been disappointed. I'm interested in whether anyone really likes it.
Mine ended up being broken (non-working bluetooth).
Returned it and got a dnx7180 with nav and good ****.

As was i and to be honest i am sort of disappointed. However, the potential is there for this unit. I believe with the right modes to the app and/or unit it will be GREAT!
The system is similar as the MIMICS system. It mirrors the display of the phone via MHL and uses bluetooth to communicate screen touches. If the app can be modded so that it allows you to navigate to more than just the appradio app then it would be perfect.
Someone that knows what they are doing should be able to mod the app accordingly and unlock the true potential of this device.
I'm sure they will hear the complaints and make Appradio 3 or 4 better. I will definitely give it another try then. The lack of compatible android apps is disappointing.

The 'appradio2' from pioneer is just starting and is getting more and more android fans every day.
Altho this is a device with great potential, the user experience is indeed a little dissapointing.
Where should I begin?
Well, first the SPH-DA100 officially only supports android 3.2 and not even all phones running it too (a list of compatible devices is @ the Pioneer website)
I successfully connected my Galaxy Nexus i9250 (running ICS 4.0.4 since this weekend) and it works!
The perfect picture for this device should be when you can control your whole phone from the screen of the appradio. For now, only approved apps can be controlled.
I follow MKVFTW when he says that someone who knows what he's doing should rewrite the apk. but for now we can only wait for Pioneer to make another version.
I do not doubt that Pioneer will wait for an appradio 3 or 4 to make things better
The current hardware can handle it.
Or does everyone here buys a new phone when the next android version comes out???
I managed to get a custom background wallpaper on the device, that is a start isn't it?
*link not allowed yet --> search youtube for appradiomodder
Let's keep going where our apps take us !!
Cheers!
I already got rid of mine. It barely worked, such a waste.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
Sorry to hear yours broke;
Mine works pretty good tbh. It rarely crashes and when it does, it only takes 20 secs. and the app restarts itself.
Bluetooth never worked from the second I opened the box. I'm using a compatible phone as well.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
I'm currently looking in to the apk.
Seems like there a lot of things there wich aren't even active for the moment.
So I think a version 1.0.3 is coming soon
According to Pioneer the app manufacurers shoud update their apps to be compatible with the sph-DA100. I don't understand this.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it possible to connect a bluetooth mouse + keyboard to your android phone? (I did this ages ago allready on my Pocket-pc)
A touchscreen (even multitouch) works by the same principals no?
I think Pioneer's it-devision is taking things to far at once and they should re-think the whole app. I'm not that experienced with coding (I'm a modder, not a creator), but from Android 3.2 and up (when the device supports mhl or hdmi out) the procedure call for android.permission.BLUETOOTH and android.permission.EXTSCREEN is the same for all devices right?
Hawt tip for any Pioneer engineer happening to stumble on this thread::
Take any android 3.2+ device with HDMI/MHL out
Connect this to a tv using HDMI/MHL to HDMI cable
Take any bluetooth mouse and connect it to your phone (might need a FREE driver app on older phones)
Take any bluetooth keyboard and connect it to your phone (might need a FREE driver app on older phones)
Enjoy manipulating ALL APPS + PHONE GUI on your tv
Cheers!
They currently have something interesting going on in the apple camp with Appradio Extensions 2.0
Appradiomodder, you are correct with the bluetooth. Most if not all android devices now adays support bluetooth devices.
The apk does what it should do when it comes to sending touch commands through the receiver screen to the phone via bluetooth. The problem is that the apk restricts it to certain locations.
That looks promising
But I noticed its for the appradio 1 not 2.
Respect for the guy's work tho! That requires a bit more skills than modding..
I'm not quite sure yet if its the appradioapp that does the restrictions. It could also be an extension is needed from the 'approved app'
I'm gonna check the apk's Carmediaplayer and Carkeyboard this weekend.
I feel it could be both. When you are at the appradio home screen and try to pull down the notification bar it wont do anything, yet in the app on the phone you can pull down no problem.
I found out a couple of things:
It is not possible to make the phone GUI work with the appradio for now. for that to work, a new AppradioApp should be written.
The approved apps contain extra code(smali) wich tunnel the received info (Location info, Parkinginfo, touchlayer info, ...) from the radio and translate that to the app itself.
The approved apps contain extra permissions to communicate with the appradio/-app
If any experienced programmer would want to have a look at this, I'd be happy to share what I found out allready.
- Background picture can be customized (only in app mode)
- ANY app can appear in the approved apps list on the radio and they CAN be started by pressing the radio's screen
The search goes on...

Moot point if you have root access. If you do then you can use the Sixaxis app to not only enable native gamepad support, but create touch profiles that let the controller work with games that don't have any gamepad support.
I'm amazed at the hoops people jump through to get such a developer-centric phone, a phone whose custom ROMs are almost identically as stable as stock, and then post on a forum like XDA... but are still afraid of rooting their phone.

You know, there are other good reasons that people got this phone besides the dev support. The thing is a powerful phone at a killer deal, and should get Google updates hot off the press. I may root my phone, but that's not why I got the Nexus 4, because there are plenty of other phones that can be rooted as well with some really good dev support.

I think this is true of certain people who post on XDA. I believe that if Recovery was more GUI centric then TWRP then it would make people who squirm over the prospect of using a recovery be more inclined to flash roms.

Im with you on this, if youre that worried about it root. Nexus devices are the easiest to root and really damn easy to recover from a mistake. I never really understand what draws people to a developer website only to hear them complain about stock firmware.

Agreed. People don't have the right to complain if they don't do anything about it when the solution is there.
Although I will admit that some people prefer their phones to be stock because they don't have the time to tinker with their phone or are just not tech savvy people. They should stick to more friendly websites like Android Central (no offense)

Yea the phone is powerful and is a good deal from the play store, but its a Nexus....the Nexus line has always been Google's developer platform...to showcase Android's open and free nature...for better or worse this Nexus and version of Android has been tailored a bit more to mainstream users, but its still Google's developer device as such its expected that a user will eventually root their device...and yes there are plenty other phones that can be rooted and have good dev support, but theres a reason the Nexus line has the best dev support out there and why custom roms and google updates come to a nexus before other phones...So I say this whats stopping you or anyone from rooting their device, nothing except yourself, its not like it voids the warranty. Thats the beauty of a Nexus device you're free to do what you want with the device and still have peace of mind that if something goes wrong your warranty is still valid (there are limitations of course, like intentional and accidental physical damage, water damage).

I don't necessarily think that people have to root or flash custom ROMs to enjoy their Nexus devices. I've felt this way since Galaxy Nexus, stock runs really smooth and fast. But of course if you root and flash custom ROM/kernels, the phone will be even better in terms of battery life and speed.
I think at this point, it all comes down to people are afraid to unlock their bootloader and mess with these things. For a first timer, it's definitely scary knowing that you might mess up but the risks of doing so are a lot less, it's easy to avoid by simply taking an hour to sit down and read about the process before they start it. I highly recommend for anyone who are just starting rooting/custom flashing/etc to NOT USE THE TOOLKIT. Yes it looks easy to use, but that's not the point. If you messed something up, will the toolkit have a 1 click button to fix your phone? No. Ultimately, it will lead to those users posting a thread in Q&A about how to fix their phone or mistake their phone for being "bricked" but if they do their research they won't have any problems because they'll know how fastboot will work.
Let's just note this is for BT pads like the wireless PS3. the wired version of the Gameklip will not work w/o OTG as OP asked.

Meh, I don't like to root until after a few months, to get a feel for the stock room first.
At least until after an ota first.

I do plan to order the icontrolpad 2 when it does release. I love the ability to play any older games where ever I am and have the clip that can attach easily with analog sticks with buttons. Anyway, since ps3 controllers require root to be compatible over bluetooth, does that apply to any other bluetooth controller?

No. It only applies to the PS3 controllers and WiiMotes. Devices that are designed for android (like MOGA) will work without root.
Do u guys know if the wireless Xbox controllers work? I have that wireless adapter that is used to connect the controller to a PC but if I can plug it into an otg cable would it work with the phone?

That actually does work on most android phones but not the Nexus 4 since it doesn't have OTG.

Chainfire Finds Actually Working Galaxy S 4 Root Method

Often times in the world of media, the first to the story gets to claim they were first. They get the worm, and they get the page views. And we won’t say that page views aren’t great; they are. They end up helping to pay the bills that mount when you grow. The obvious downside to that, is often times that same media outlet can fall victim to their own success, and in turn report on things that aren’t actually real. We’ve done it before, and we’ve had to step up and admit it.
At XDA, we take pride in the fact that most of the mobile development news originates here. We are the source that all others report on. We also take pride in the fact that while we may not be the first to the news, we endeavor to report the real story after it’s been tried, tested, and verified. After all, we are the source.
Recently, news went around the internet that the new darling of the mobile world, the Samsung Galaxy S 4, had been rooted prior to its release. Generally that is great news, but in this case the person who did the “rooting” didn’t have the device to test the process. In many cases, like previous versions of the Galaxy series, that is OK because the way to root Samsung devices has been the same via repacking Samsung’s firmware package with su and then flashing via ODIN. While that old way worked, it doesn’t work on the new S4 as XDA Recognized Developer Odia proved in a thread similar to the original “root” thread.
What is different about the S 4 is that Samsung utilizes a new security feature to enable BYOD to make the S 4 more palatable for the Enterprise customers, and that feature is Samsung Knox. Without going into a lot of detail, Knox effectively isolates your personal side of the device from your companies private side.
XDA Elite Recognized Developer Chainfire began toying with the Qualcomm version of the Galaxy S 4 (GT-I9505) back in early March, and immediately began to have issues with the “tried and true” process for rooting previous Galaxy devices. He noticed that while you could “inject” the su binary into the firmware, the device would immediately reboot when that same binary was executed.
After much testing, Chainfire figured out a way to root the device using his tried-and-true CF-Auto-Root process and posted the method in this thread. Be warned that this currently only works on the GT-I9505 (Qualcomm LTE) version of the S4, with Odia finding that there are issues with the Exynos 5 Octa version. As is always the case, be warned that there is a risk in performing any procedure such as this on your device. Let’s hope that Samsung hasn’t decided to really turn their noses up at the development community.
1. This is old news my friend
2. You straight copied and pasted from XDA's homepage, at least cite your source

Awesome, chainfire is a boss.
One more reason to get the SD600. Poor exynos is going to fall short in development

For me it was a new news .
And yes i did copied, so whats the big deal.:silly:
I posted in thread so that guys like me who dint knew it before, will come to know about it.
This time around, Samsung's approach is reminding me of an good old un-hackable Symbian S60v3/v5 devices, Sammy is quickly going in that direction, i will not be surprised when Samsung's devices will be "un-rootable" soon, especially their Exynos chipset's closed sources is clear evidence of what is coming Happy flashing guys

Talked to a friend who sat through a Samsung presentation today about their new devices and the Knox technology. It sounds like they're trying to have an extremely secure device configuration possible - one which might not be rootable and if it was rootable, it'd be fixed pretty quickly.
But from, http://www.samsung.com/global/business/mobile/solution/security/samsung-knox:
In addition, Samsung Knox's Secure Boot technology allows the switch of the secure boot root certificate in a secure manner after the devices are shipped. As a result, customers that have high security requirements can purchase regular consumer devices and switch the root-of-trust used for secure boot to better protected ones.

It sounds like they don't intend to ship all the devices locked down. Hopefully the carriers don't get any genius ideas about this...
From what I read of this thread and others rooting the S4, what has been rooted is a non-Knox'd device. They seem to be switching that stuff on and off during the pre-release tweaking.

Sprint note 5 sm-n920p - remote sim unlock testers needed

Hey guys, I'm trying to test out some software a friend stumbled upon that can unlock the Sprint Note 5. I've already unlocked my Sprint Note 5, which I am using with T-Mobile. I'm trying to see if it can work the unlock over a remote connection before buying myself, as it is very expensive software that also requires a physical dongle to work.
YOU MUST HAVE A DECENT STEADY INTERNET CONNECT AND USING WINDOWS PC!
You must be rooted! ( I have not tried this on a non rooted Note 5 and do not know if it will work. With that said if you're unrooted and one of the few I have time to try this remote unlock with, you proceed at your own risk!)
Please Nandroid or backup your data by whatever means you may use!
Although this will not root your phone or flash anything to your Note 5, you do this at your own risk!
If the remote unlock is unsuccessful, remember this didn't cost you a thing, and if it worked please post to this thread!
I am using a friends licensed software and hardware that he has been kind to let me try, please understand that I cannot do this for everyone that responds and my time is limited! With that said you will get a PM from me instructing you to download the 7zip file below for setup. At the moment, I have time for 5 to 6 quick unlocks! Don't get mad if you're not picked, as it will be random! Don't PM me regarding this thread, unless I PM'ed you in response to your thread reply. Thank you!
ENABLE USB DEBUGGING:
1. To enable "USB DEBUGGING", go to settings, then "About Phone", then tap "Build Number" 7 times.
2. Enable "USB debugging" and "OEM Unlock" in "Settings", "Developer options".
3. Connect the phone to PC with USB cable, install drivers if needed.
Download UnlockTools.7zip :
UnlockTools2.7z
Unzip and install as Administrator with shortcuts on your Desktop for easy access.
This zip contains two files:
Flexihub Setup - Used to connect to your Note 5 from remote connection. This can also be downloaded from the developers website as a free download for individual users. Google and you will find. Otherwise use my link.
TeamViewer Setup - Used to connect to your PC remotely and connect Flexihub software to your device. This can also be downloaded from the developers website as a free download for individual users. Google and you will find. Otherwise use my link.

Still trying to get Sprint version to unlock. My friend has expensive box and I'm thinking of getting one, but first he's letting me play around with it here and there. Still testing bro. PM me if you would like to try. Got mines to unlock, trying to replicate remotely now.
Interested!

You should've kept it! Little something for your thoughts. Instead of donating those, you should save them, you would be surprised what hardware and software a few hundred of them could buy! T Mobile working real good here on Memorial Day, oh yeah, that is a N920p! Just to fill you in, $#!+ def legit. Funny ass!

And in all honesty, Junior, you should not have waste your first post bro! Or should I say Troll! Look I'm just trying to replicate what I did for mines using remote access. You think all the remote unlocks and sim unlocks you seeing on ebay and on websites are fake? Trust me, they are not, but it is expensive hardware and software that does that. What I do is completely safe. If you don't like what you see, leave. Simple, but evidently you are a troll and your profile proves it. You ask no questions, subscribe to nothing.
