Alright. Just got my Infuse last month. I picked this phone for specific reasons. Nevermind that. What I am curious about is this:
How secure are custom ROMs?
I know...noob. However, I have read a lot about it...or attempted to anyway. I am not finding much in the way of a technical explanation of why custom ROMs are secure.
Because of the nature of what I do, I need things to be pretty locked down.
I used to have a cappy, which I flashed a few ROMs to, and eventually bricked. But again, my job deals with personal info in my gmail inbox. I can't compromise that.
Alright, super long blabfest cut short: how secure are any of these ROMs?
Thanks for reading, thanks for writing, and most of all, thanks to the Devs!!!

I don't think anybody has had any "security" issues. I mean after all they are or most of them are Samsung based roms, just with mods and themes applied to them.

I am not a Dev, but I understand a little regarding software security from my software hack days.
Running these Custom ROMs are secure, it's your individual setting per app is where you manage your security. There are software apps free and paid, I have tried Norton apps for security on the Infuse, check it out its free and I believe it has a trial period. I understand what your concern, I have 4 email accounts that I run, with a govt email being forwarded to one of the four.
As per google's policy, they can retain your info (including personal) indefinitely. They could share non personal info like browsing habits with their partners. Personal info would be divulged law enforcement officers when request comes in through proper channels. This is the norm with all online providers.
If you are talking about encryption and such stuff, make sure you enable strong passwords (not simple pattern based or number based).
Also set the option in settings to disable USB debugging when phone is locked. This will prevent connecting and issuing adb commands at system level.
Set up software like avast to send remote commands to phone when you feel its lost to erase the phone as first step.
When you try to install stuff from market, see for what permissions it uses. If you are uncomfortable, and the vendor isn't a well known entity, don't install such software.
These are some basic measures you could try employing. 100% security is something not achievable, cos if it were, we wouldn't be having so many people/companies working on anti virus software.
You spoke about gmail...check out their 2 layer security protection for gmail. You have to have your phone WITH you in order to log in. I know it's not what you asked but I'm sure U would be interested in setting that up.

I think this is only for browsers. On phone, once setup, it stays.
@OP: In case you lose your phone, change your gmail password on computer, and it will auto disconnect the email and market on phone.
There are several apps on the market, Cerberus and Lookout, for example, that will let you remote wipe your phone if it gets lost or stolen. Also they allow you to send text messages to your device or email messages to turn on wifi/gps and locate it, send you back information, set off the alarm, etc.
There's also an app called Divide iirc, that lets you set up a 'work' and 'personal' data/app profile, so when you hand off your phone to someone or take it into work, you can set it into work mode, and your personal data is unavailable until you switch back.

Dude. I'm not going without a smartphone. Before I bricked it, I had teamhacksung's ICS on it. There's no way I'm going to have a dumbphone. It's hard enough going back to Froyo and Touchwiz.
I work in an industry that by its very nature is mobile. I understand that transmitting data & putting stuff in the cloud carries some risk. What I want to understand better is whether I am adding to that risk by getting rid of official firmware and installing something that isn't.

I have been using Lookout. I have tried a few security apps, but I've also read a few articles that seem to indicate that it's unclear whether some of those apps work because there has been few widespread outbreaks.
My primary concern is the relative security of my clients' data. Their email could be hacked before it ever gets to me too. But, after spending a month with TouchWiz, I am drooling over some of the ROMs I'm seeing here. Particularly interested about Revelation.

To be honest, the custom ROMs here are more secure than the stock one, with an exception that they are rooted. But by enabling certain options I mentioned above, this can be overcome (I am referring to disabling USB debugging when screen is locked).
Also, the ROM devs go to lengths to incorporate any security loopholes that they find out. Best example was the loggers on most HTC phones that logged even sensitive info like passwords. The devs here took care of taking it out from their ROMs.

This is a relative flaw in android that it currently does not support device level encryption like blackberry. BBs go the extent of not even showing contacts and requiring a full reset of device on things like SIM change. Android still doesn't have this feature. There are some workarounds though that we could employ to use this wonderful OS.
Most security apps today (like avast; I am not marketing this app, but this is one of apps I tried that is free and has a hell load of options) can be configured at system level as device admins. And they have options that can help keep them alive even after a full system reset (helps save from majority of users).

Illegal if it's not your wifi. People on that thread think this app is some kind of game, going to public places and disconnecting everyone. I find that as another low in our society. But proceed if you wish..

It's obvious that there's a huge security loophole, but then again getting kicked off is just a minor problem. The bigger problem is when someone intercept the data you send over wifi. If it works i think it's a nice too to have if you want to take control of your own wifi.

Yeah, i agree. I believe that the developer for that app is working on getting it to 'hack' and block off encrypted and secured wifi, maybe even intercept the wifi and retrieve data from the user(s). If so, that thread should be deleted immediately as that is a much greater security risk. I have a bad feeling about the future of that app.
But what can i do.

Me personally I like the app! But the one I love the most its Faceniff I think he did a damn good job on hacking people Facebook if they using it with wifi.I have seen so many things that I din't though my neighbors was people like that ..but thanks to his apps I know my surrounding! And about the wifi app,it a good app I like it when family comes to stay the night and they been using the wifi signal alot and I hated when i be watching movies on my phone it keeps stopping .so I just turn the app and kick them out of my network .... except me lolz
!!! I hope he keep doing a great job!
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
If he manage to do that i hope it gets widely known so people know so people can find a way to plug the security hole. The worst security anyone have is false sense of safety.
There are enterprise level solutions that protect against this, but as far as the average user goes, it's a little above and beyond what a layperson could set up. The problem with WifiKill is there is no simple solution due to the way ARP packets work. The whole structure of networking would have to change to eliminate the flaw and really, you just can't expect that to happen.
What I don't see being a problem is it becoming too widespread in use. I've used it and about the 3rd time I shut down a whole network of devices it lost its thrill. It's kinda one of those "Hey that's kinda spiffy" tools, but unless you're a greedy whore it's just not really something you're gonna bother with.
FaceNiff on the other hand is a nasty bugger. But there is a REAL easy solution to it. Use SSL. I believe the FB app uses it and if you are using a browser just type in https://www.facebook.com. One letter more typing. The internet is a scary place, you need to protect yourself and when it's this dead simple, I don't feel sorry for people.
Wireless has always been a horribly weak system from day one. Just some articles on how easy it is to break WEP and you'll see you've never really been all that safe in the first place.
What is everyone's opinion of Lookout Mobile Security, or any security/virus scanning app for their Android devices? I have been using Lookout for many months and I don't have any particular problems with it. I have recently flashed a ROM and I am running with limited apps (for the time being) but before I reinstall everything I previously had, I wanted to find out what others think.
I have read some articles recently that suggest mobile security apps are not really that needed as long as the person is cautious about the things they install. This can probably be said about anything that relates to software but do programs like Lookout drain the battery more? Do they slow down our phones? Like I said, I have been using it for many months so I do not have much experience without it.
I look forward to hearing what others have to say.
My apologies if this is in the wrong section. I just realized that I might have been better posting this in Q&A.
Yeah totally wrong section. Q and A or General.
X,
Sent from my Infuse.
Not really needed, unless you plan to install any Chinese/Japanese sex apps like "screaming Japanese girls".
Also be attention to the permission an app needs before you install it. It comes up on the screen when it prompts to install. For example, a wall paper app does not need access to contacts.
yea..i uninstalled a while ago.. i never seen the benefit..
Excellent, yeah that's what I was thinking too. I haven't been running it in a week and even when I did, nothing ever came up. I know that problems can occur with bad apps but like you guys I will just be careful and 'verify' the permissions of the things that I install. Thanks!
I don't think the virus scanning stuff like Lookout is worth it for droida and is kindof a ripoff itself.
However I do use the seekdroid app to help find my phone via location if I misplaced it... which happens every now and then.

I am newly registered to the XDA but I have followed for some time now. I have rooted a LG Optimus M as well my AT&T Galaxy S2 Skyrocket ( two separate devices...)
I recently switched to the :good::good::good::good:CM9 nightly builds:good::good::good:. Good so far in that realm minus a weird gallery issue.
My real question is what are people doing about antivirus/malware protection on a rooted phone? I have tried AVG and a couple of others, but the interface doesn't really show what it is doing. I also have a Macbook Pro and use Little Snitch for monitoring traffic going in and out. I can approve or deny traffic on a one time basis or forever. Is there also an app that would provide this type of functionality as traffic going out that I have not approved is generally my first clue that something might be going on.
This is my first post (N00bie) so I apologize if it is not formatted like some of you professional XDA members.

I looked over the results of the test and settled on Lookout for now. It seems when I install any app, it will automatically scan that app for me... I like that approach. I may purchase it later... maybe...
I will let you know if I run into any problems with that one... I have to say if you don't have some sort of Antivirus, you may be asking for problems... Seems with rooting and modding that we are doing, you never REALLY know what someone has programmed into a mod or app. I still want something like Little Snitch that monitors all inbound/outbound traffic and lets me decide whether to allow/deny connections....
Would be a nice feature in my mind...

You also have to not use open networks where they can poison and intercept your info. I stay off those and don't side load.

I've used it for a long while now. Clean, simple, and only presents me with a super user style allow/deny for permission requests. So today this app called Locket was just released. Basically it pays you about 1 penny sometimes more for each ad. The ads are not really annoying like those push notifications. How it displays is when you wake up your phone and then it's there on the lock screen. From what i see it's pretty much like deals and big brand names. Check it out, if you're like me you unlock your phone A LOT throughout the day lol. Oh and the best part is you don't have to actually visit the ad since it's already paying you for displaying it on your phone.

Can someone please post the .apk? I'm writing from Iceland...
Is anyone else having it not count for every unlock or just count every once and a while?

It seems to be set to allow you to earn a penny a few times in a specific time period then a wait for a specific time period is set for it to stop displaying 1 penny when that time is up you are able to receive a few cents until you do so many times within a set time then it just loops

3 cents per hour. Pays out in PayPal at the moment, but in future updates, it might be Amazon/Google Play cards (My guess anyway).
They're thinking of other ways to display ads, so far they're saying that they don't want to go the notifications route.
I've made $0.56 so far. They said they give out bonuses sometimes too. I think I already got a $0.10 one.
Here is my ref.

Oh, and US only at the moment.
Well hot digity dog.... I can quit my day job!!!
If this is legit I doubt it will last long nor will anyone make much money.I am sure there is a limit on the unlocks per day and not worth it.
Next here comes the guy who makes an app where your lockscreen blinks on and off constantly......See where all this is going???,,,,,,wont be going very far thats for sure. Save yourself some time and move on, most likely a scam anyways.
EDIT: Well I will eat my words, I guess its legit. You just need an app to unlock your phone screen three times per hour , 24 hours a day to make $262.80 over the course of a year,
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2422013,00.asp
I hope it will be released on worldwide.. it not available in my country yet.. this will be awesome when it comes out in worldwide.
Ps.. there is a whaff that could pay you when you download/watch ads on there app

They've already said that they can easy oust people for trying to sign up multiple times. And obviously, they also have your IP address among other stuff. I am a part of so many survey groups and stuff. They aren't going to catch you right away, but they're going to hit you the MOMENT you try and cash out.
They can do it the way AT&T does it... They can see whether or not you have a tethering app by just having one of their apps installed. Hence a lot of people get caught tethering sooner or later by just having the myAT&T app installed. These guys can tell whether you have Tasker or similar installed and if it's running.
Need locket-beta apk file
Hey guys,
I'm from India and I'd love to try this app. I've tried changing my Billing address in Google Wallet to be able to download this app but I still cannot. I'm now being charged in USD for purchases instead of INR but this app still shows as incompatible with any of my devices. Also, I've tried using Market Enabler but that hasn't worked either. Can someone upload the apk for me please?
Thanks,
Mahesh
Nevermind, I just found it on another thread. Just in case someone else needs it. It's here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43800419
Just installed it on my N7.
Seems to work so far, but haven't tried to withdraw any cash yet!
Didn't have to do any VPN or market enabling. As long as you know a genuine US zip code, I reckon it will let you sign up, and they are easy enough to find.

Where theres a will theres a way Get xPrivacy app and they cant tell anything about whats on ur phone its none of their business anyways. Root, install Xposed, Install xPrivacy, and tell it what apps u want to restrict & want to stop them from seeing.

Seriously?
"This app is incompatible with your device." I have a LG Optimus 4X on stock JB in UK. WTF?

I've got it running on my Nexus 7, and I'm in the UK. Up to 12 cents so far
Downloaded the apk from the link at the top of this page, and I just registered with a US zip code (90210).
My first Nexus device, the only device I haven't tried. Great hardware but the stock email apk is terrible! I know there are email apps available and have bought and tried all of them over the years, and they never seem to handle A-Z like stock apk's. Is there another email apk and exchange apk fiel from another device that can be implemented to the N5? I use exchange email like most sms.
A must in today's world: Conversation thread view, fit email body to screen, and would be nice to have read receipt.
Is the N7 better with Exchange?

I use the stock app but I've read others have used https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fsck.k9&hl=en and like it. I guess the stock app is bare bones but it does what I need.

I own a couple of oil & gas companies and its not uncommon to have several conversations going on throughout the day and each conversation could have up to 10 people in it, can get very confusing without conversation view. I have Touchdown running for corporate exchange and stock running for personal exchange. I couldn't get K9 to see server ...IO error? Does K9 have conversation thread view? ..thanks
Solmail. U will be amazed.

Nice looking app! I have my own domain at 365 managed by Microsoft, Solmail will only take Hotmail from Microsoft ...not office 365
Thanks for pointing me to it
Open email. Read, delete, or reply. I don't need anymore than that. Stock is fine for me.

Conversation view is terrible in the GMail, a must in today's world is getting that disabled, like in their website app.
Read receipt, it would be nice if we could disable them from the Email app.

So nothing quite like I need it yet, but they are getting closer. None listed here will do what you need.
Some possibilities if they keep developing...
SoMail-when exchange is supported or push imap.
Evomail- if they keep developing; very slow to make changes, but very promising.
Cloudmagic-close, some small issues. Well on its way to do what I want.
Mail wise-based on stock email app with cool feature that takes extra stuff like signatures and such out. Needs some work making it prettier, show embedded images/tables, and better ways to identify what to remove (sometimes doesn't remove things).
These are the ones to watch in my opinion. Pretty apps, cool features (promised at least), and hopefully bringing the features I need to my phone.

Sure, if you are willing to spend $18 on an ugly app (course just my opinion). There are better ways to show this in a much nicer UI. I would never spend that much on an email app though. Rather slave through stock, or try one of the three free apps I mentioned.

Your statement is a pure fallacy. You said no app exists that does all the things requested. Maildroid does.
Further, the interface used to be ugly. About 3 months ago the dev reworked all that and its now highly customizable.
Maildroid pro is the closest thing to a computer email app in existence for android. Period.

Are you the dev? I don't mean to offend you, just a personal opinion is all. Maildroid may be able to do what he is asking, but I still feel it is ugly/old - however there are much worse out there.

This is not what I would call an up to date look. Holo, cards, etc. have been available for some time now, yet this app falls behind. Not to mention $18 for a phone app is quite a lot, especially for only email, and when there are free apps that will do it as well (and have an up to date UI).
Again, don't mean to offend you if you are the dev or just someone trying to justify spending the money on the app. This is just one persons opinion trying to help the op with an issue they were asking about. Honestly not even sure op cares anymore anyway.

Dont push it. That app is ugly. End of the story. Reminds me of htc incredible times.
Not the dev at all... Just a very happy user of the app with exchange for business purposes.
Anyhow if he needs all those features and doesn't like the look I am sure he can get over it... Also why would an oil company owner care about $18
PS: I agree the app is outrageously priced
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using Tapatalk 4
I agree! Some apps are close, wish ONE of them could get all things right. The corporate world uses phone calls predominately for dialing into a conference call. Exchange email is the gold standard, easy to work in and creates an indisputable record. Surely someone will get an exchange app the has conversation view, read receipt, delay delivery and on ...
SoMail looks like a very clean well build app ..no exchange
Wonder if Google is keeping the app basic for a reason. Maybe they are working to push the Google Apps Premier instead of Exchange. That is a LONG way off to get all the Exchange users to switch - especially with all the switchers to Office360. Food for thought I guess.
Oh, and while I will say the Maildroid app is ugly, it does work very nicely. I am the type where UI is more important to me, but for the OP if it isn't then Maildroid is a great email client. Just try it out with the free version (ad supported) first and see if it works. If you care not about UI, then I hope it works for you.

I wanted to send a document today and attach it to an email. But what a drama. I could only attach a video or picture. Like what's all that about. Luckily I managed to source the doc from elsewhere but I could have done without all the grief!
