{Feature Request}<--Where would this post go? Here?? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

This is a feature request for any rom that would want to implement it. Most roms, Carbon, Liquid, Nameless, and some TW rom's (4.3's) have a form of it already.
Network Traffic in the status bar.
This is a very handy feaure when you can read it. That's the problem especially on ROM's which have both up and download speeds shown at the same time on two different rows. I know this takes up much less space, but if you can't readily read the data, it doesn't do much good. I'm on a much cheaper verizon data package plan like 250MB, and I might go up but I'm trying to save every penny I can. There's a lot of public wifi available anyway. I like to glance it at perodically to see how much data is being used when I'm not and when I am using wifi. Wifi to check speeds overall, and on data to make sure stuff ain't downloading a ton to keep both mine and another smartphone in check.
Anyway, ROM's which display download only I currently prefer simply beause it's one speed and the font size is much larger.
But I'd prefer to see both as although I use download speed a lot, up speed is nice to know too, for uploading and sending large messages / email, upload of files, and to see if the phone is uploading something I might not need to be like a rogue app.
Xposed has a module that a new guy has taken over that shows network speed and gives you the option of how many rows you want to use for network speeds. There's other ways too, I think there's an app in the store, and I'm almost certain there's widgets, again, both are nice, but having it in the status bar is just awesome sauce on the kitkat or jellybean.
With the Xposed module: You can also select things like:
display the unit you prefer, or none
IF both are one row you can make the font larger so you can easily read both and are squinting
Change the color of the font
A ton of other things some nice, some unnecessary, a really nice xposed module.
I am forty years old have had three eye surgeries between 3-5 years of age, but was told I'd start needing glasses for reading when I reached my thirties. Well, I'm going on 40, and the eye's ain't what they used to be. And they've never been great, but I never needed them to read for about the last twenty years, after having worn glasses for 15 years after the sugeries, the doc told me I really didn't need them anymore and wouldn't need them until I got a bit older.
Anyway, I hope this is the place for something like this. I like a lot of different roms, and although I'm on one rom now mostly, I'd like to see this at least in the rom's that currently have such a feature. Because, at least for me, even with glasses, I have a hard time reading the double row up and down speeds provided by roms like beanstalk (most recent kitkat builds, the earlier builds only had down speed which was readable), carbon, liquid, and many roms, TW included, already have a readable download speed but no upload speed. I rather have it like this if it's not changable, but if it's changable:
Id like to see single row network speeds both up and down. Maybe 2 digits like 2.2GB/s etc. With or without the units.
If there's anyway anyone can implement, I for one would appreciate it. If it's something ridiculously insance to do, perhaps I can help, but although I'm no dev, I might be able to get it working by comparing code, but the font size I'd think would be changable somehow.
Thanks.
griz
If this post needs moving, please send me a PM and go ahead and move it. I'm not sure where it belongs, but the dev's might see it here.

Please move this to general where it belongs. Sorry I should have read the rest of the rules. The ones by archangel . my apologies again

Android Town

Ok, Android Town is now an obsolete name and application on the market. It was renamed to Peeples. Peeples is a seperate app on the market so you would need to download that one. It uses the same DB as Android Town so all your information is saved.
Peeples is a social community application which is location based. It enables users to see other users of the application on the map and strike up a conversation with them. Privacy options are also available.
So far the application has over 11k users.
Peeples has the added options of:
- uploading profile pictures and avatar through the application
- sending files from SD card with messages as attachments (5Mb limit for now)
Try it out and let me know what you think.

Running it on a G1 running CM 4.2.15.1.
Noticed a few things.
1) Registration via App Only (not a big deal, just no indication on the site as such)
2) Registration within the app resulted in "passwords do not match" ANY time I left a password field even when they did match
3) Map reacts slowly when being moved or zoomed in/out
As there's no one yet in my area run ning this, I haven't tested many of the other features. I'll report as I experience more.
Thanks for giving it a try. Hopefully some more US citizens register so you'll be able to interact with them. 5000 kms (around 3100 miles) is the biggest radius so far. Most of the users are in Europe at the moment.
Thanks for the heads up on the registration part. I will definitely try to improve it.
I was also thinking about adding content from social networks if users have any (FB, Twitter, FLickr...). What do you think about that?
And thanks again for testing
Have yet to install the newer release for testing, but looking forward to it.
The concept of linking other social media is a fine idea, provided that there are switches set in place to allow for selected/unselected status. I know plenty of users who would want to publish information for their Facebook, but may want to avoid doing so on other networks.
Either way, yeah, further integration with social media is a fine idea.
ill install and test tmmrw probably
seems pretty cool ill make sure to throw it on my EVO as soon as it freakin comes out
Added to my G1. Will let you know what happens.
Cheers. I sent you a msg in the app as well. Can you test how the send message screen looks on lower resolution please?
Testing it out now , but not many *users* in norway.
I'm the only one
Application is still in its's early days. If you choose a larger radius you will see more users (around 45 accross the world right now)
Application has just been published to the market as well, under the Social category of applications.
How about making a public chat channel that every one is in , when we connect . And late maybe switch it so it will be local / country only.
All depending on how many users this app gets
That's actually a very good idea. I'll be sure to do that as soon as possible...shouldn't be that hard (at least for a single one for starters)
Good nice app!
Already tweeted this. I'll Buzz it as well.
Private Messages look fine on the G1. No issue there.
I'll be comparing my experience to my friend's on the Nexus. Hopefully provide you some better feedback concerning how this works with the G1's older hardware.
Edit: First things we noticed, "Passwords do not match!" error is still present when registering via the app, even if the passwords do match. This issue has been replicated on the G1 and the Nexus 1.
Other noted issues:
Attempt to "Add as friend" on the G1 results in a toast of "Error". No other information contained in error.
Sending a picture on the G1 took about 1 min 45 seconds from time of shot to "Picture sent!" toast showed up.
I'll see what I can do to provide better information (such as screenshots, etc)
Let me know what else you could use.
Just a thought, an option to register via the desktop(internet) as well.
i couldn't figure out how to register until I found it as an option in settings when the app was open.
Doh.
It's lonely in the south of england......
Working on the mentioned bugs as we speak. Will probably release an upgrade today that might fix a few things.
@squirreleater: the internet register option is definitely needed. I agree.
anyone from germany?
feature request: please include option to add user with the username directly so that people from here can invite eachother other than searching on the map
install
Wont install on my Hero ??

New Approach (end user)

In short!
Build a G1 rom without so many stock applications!!! This will defiitely cause a snappier feel to functionality.
(I once used a rom with 37 stock apps, the g1 can only handle about 40 unrooted! ridiculous!)
I've had a G1 since the beginning, and as things have progressed along no one has really noted how much we've crammed into the device with each OS update, much like bloatware.
I've recently been running the latest up to date roms I can find, and they don't run up to par, there is a lot of lag and waiting. This isn't to say all roms or slow or even any at all, just my experience and I hope with that we can build a 2.2 rom without added applications.
Maybe make two roms, a bare bones rom and a full one.
I don't need: launcher pro
an extra email client
3d gallery
music
news and weather
talk
voice dialer / search.
There are better alternatives on the market, and the voice search is horrible.
All Android phones will eventually slow down with OS updates, lets not cram the g1 with new services found on better phones. (bluetooth 2.0)
I think it's great progress I do, but I think the majority of g1 users would be grateful without them/ a pick between barebones and full roms.
I've deleted most of the apps mentioned above, but without the extra email app my gmail wont sync, and all sorts of quirky things.
The g1 isn't slow, it was fast and snappy with the firmware version it came out on, let's keep stock apps to a minimum!
Tried to keep this short, sorry.
You know, you can easily edit any of the roms, by hand, or using dsixda's kitchen
Or if that sounds too geeky, you can always install root explorer and delete the desired apk files from /system/app. it works for me. i remove the onscreen keyboard (extra 4mb of ram), voice search, voice dialer, bluetooth (which i rarely use, so i dont need it there), extra mail client,
soooo..
What your saying is because you dont want to do it yourself and you are the only one who uses these roms, the developers should do more work just for you.
You do understand how easy it is for you to delete what you dont want from a rom right?
Let's refer to the OP and see what is now bolded.
I've used Root Explorer to delete apps (and still do) but it never is as sound as I'd like.
My Gmail won't sync and will crash after I delete the extra email.apk,
my contacts will crash when trying to join with FB small here and there things.
I'm all about being "geeky" with my phone, I'm a little bothered anyone would think I wasn't considering I've been using this device since the beginning with ADB and all that noise.
It was a suggestion for less technical users to not have the hassle. I read Cyan the other day saying how these devices are still fun to hack and they just keep adding to it not regarding (it seems) if it will be snappy and functional for every day use.
and thank you fonix232 I'll look into it
dude if you dont want all the "bloat-ware", you should try a plain phone like this, i use one my self

and on a almost serious note, that reminds me of that skinny mp3 lookin' phone Verizon put out like 2 years ago that slid out like a blade haha
Simply install an 3rd party app like android commander and remove what you desire from /system/app. Going to request a close/move on this, as there isn't too much development going on here+already slightly off topic.
EDIT: Also remember barebone roms, about 2 or so were released. The reason why you don't see more as it didn't really impact the G1 that much. Let's face it, we're lacking ram mainly and os support.

I uploaded a few stripped roms in the past, but nothing recently. This was mostly when I was repacking WG's kernel into various different roms. Now with AnyKernel Updater (and pershoot, dumfuq, exterry, etc) constantly building kernels, there's little need.
It really comes down to the fact that there isn't the perfect rom for everyone. It's easier for me to strip what I don't want out, throw some extra scripts here and there, and testsign the zip.

The 8pen - New keyboard!!

This one seems interesting...
Umm, wow. Anxious to try but does not look like it will be easy to get used to.
EDIT: Available later today. On the market? Or will we have to download from 8pen.com I wonder.
Now available in the market. It costs $1.50 something, but might be worth a try.
Reminds me of the learn morse code website.
Seems like a similar method.

It isn't. Anyone who can take this keyboard and swipe like there's no tomorrow on it earns all of my respect. This keyboard is kicking my ass, but I find it to be pretty fun.
Downloaded it but can't get it to work correctly. Gah.
Sent from me to you via the interwebs.
at least it's an effort away from the the standard qwerty design.
it surprises me that we are so hung up on a keyboard layout that was originally designed to slow the typist down.
no way!
i do not like this! i tried it and it's hard for no reason!
For something that is an almost revolutionary change, you figure they'd release a trial version...
Edit: I know you can do the 24 hr thing, but most people are gonna need more than 24 hrs to get used to this. I'd say a minimum of 2 week trial would be required to get acceptably proficient.
I'm with all of you on this .... i normally pick up stuff fairly quick and i'm having the hardest time getting to any letters outside of a, i, y, s, e, t you get my point. the tutorial is not helping me. i see what they say but i don't get it .... i'm keeping close eye on my 24hr window ..... this one may be a return ....
I returned it. There's no way I can determine whether or not I'll be able to figure this thing out in a week, let alone 24 hours.
It took me a bit to figure out how to do it.... To get the other letters you have to go out from the letter you want then move your finger either clockwise or counter clockwise 1-4 sides til you get the letter you want.
For example to get a U slide your finger right like you would for an O then circle around to the side with the
S then back to the center. For Z you would go out from the center then make a complete circle. If that makes sense I'm not to great at explaning things... Its really fast once you figure it out and get used to it
Edit: cleaned post up a bit and explained it better.
(yes I know my grammar sucks I'm still trying to get used to 8pen)
Just watching the video almost gave me an aneurysm.
thanks

Just tried it and after about an hour an i am getting used to it. I can type most words now without issues. Now without looking thats the hard part.
even the tutorial vid on their site looks hard as ****.
That looks awful! But I'll buy it just because it's unique
I still can't get it to function on my phone. Not sure what that issue is. It is enabled and selected for my input method but no characters appear when I type. Anyone else having issues?

That was happening to me too. However, I wasn't bringing my finger back to the center dot.

Live Watches (SE LiveView)

EDIT, 05/15/11:
Note: You will only care about this app. if you own a Sony Ericsson LiveWatch device!
v1.2
* Now with several more, aesthetically pleasing watch faces and hands
* Upload your own png file as /sdcard/livewatch.png (girlfriend picture, pet, etc.) -- Beware! The LiveView device is very picky with encoding, color set, etc.

I am going to talk about a plug-in I wrote for the Sony Ericsson LiveView.
However, if you guys wish to discuss development for that device or how to make it work better, this is also welcome because it is both intriguing and under-represented (and a bit maddening at times)
Anyway, I was flabbergasted when I realized that there isn't any straightforward "watch" plug-in for the LiveView so in a couple hours I figured out how to use the SDK and created one.
I am not releasing it yet and I will only make it available it there is interest for it and I get the appropriate permissions from the people whose art I have used for this proof of concept app.
By the way, more face and hands art would be welcome!
A few (terrible) screenshots:
My LiveView was sent from the website i ordered it from, today=) I would really such an addon=)
And i can make you some artwork if i get something to work with=)
Oh, that's good.
I hope it works well for you. The device losing its pairing can be quite aggravating.
On the other hand it is a breeze to develop for; actually simpler than writing a home screen widget.
A friend of mine got it last week and said that he had lost his pairing once since he got it set up.
To me no development is a breeze i know squat about programing
But as said i would love to make you some graphics you could use so that you can release this=)
^^
I just received a sms from my post office that my LiveView had arrived
and here are a little graphic preview of some artwork you might use(?) It shows the whole thing, background, minute hand and hour hand=)
I really think you should release this addon
Ha! I like it a lot, in fact.
Can you post it as three files as described at http://www.voilaweb.com/lv_faq#createtheme?
Oh, and I updated the OP with a link to the beta apk
Will do, Just have to make some minor changes as the big and short hand are the same. and also added some indicators on the clock face.
Edit: Also, will you support this addon? i mean like bugs and stuff?
I guess, I will have to, yes
So, anyone go any feedback for me?
hey man.
i just installed your app from market and it's looking great.
i guess you can make a clock with digits or maybe a digital one.
it still disconnects but at least i have a watch
one other thing maybe you can ad an always on screen option
MrJay, first off, thanks for your feedback
The "always on" option would be nice but I invite you to think about this some more...say until your device dies on you because its damn battery is already too weak for the plug-in's current version
EDIT: OK I really don't want to sound negative. The device is really nice. I just wish it had better connectivity and battery life.
In fact, the tricks I read on how to force it to reconnect using AutomateIt, etc., end up sucking battery life like crazy.
The only thing i have to say about this addon, is that its a bit slow to update when i wake the screen. might take a sec before the clock shows the correct time.
Other than that, i love it
Thanks Marius.
Yes, I know about the 1 sec. delay it's due to sending as few updates to the device as possible, to improve battery life.
But maybe I could slightly alter this behavior for a "wake up" event.
BTW, I hope you guys are using the version from the market! It's free, but more likely to get updates than the one on my blog.

i stopped using automateit. it didn't do that much and yes you're right about the crappy battery life .
anyway keep up the good job. it's a nice to have application.
I ordered one of these devices today after seeing this post, fantastic plugin! this is perfect for when I'm at work, seeing as I work outside and don't have time to check my phone for any updates, much less the time. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Where can I order this I'm interested I live in California if that makes a difference
Well, Spitfire, so do I. I ordered from these guys: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004E2V4NM and it was shipped from Florida.
Have you updated this with any new themes?
Ive been away over the easter and haven checked in here for about 2 weeks. also i've been flashing a lot of ROMs lately so havent gotten to hook up my liveview yet. Will look in to it today th0=)

Awesome design. I fear that the LiveView's limited resolution will not be able to display something this complex, though. Not even something as good-looking as a TikTok

Split-screen multitasking/dual monitor app?

The Note's screen is large enough that in landscape, split in half, each side is still larger than many phone screens I've used before, including smart phones. I'd really like to be able to do split screen multitasking. Has anyone made something like this yet? Sure, the resolution of each half would be a little weird at 800x640, but doesn't ICS alleviate resolution issues? I'd love to be able to use each side as a separate monitor.
If not, perhaps it could be split into two 800x480 screens with a strip of controls in the center. Or split into 800x800 and 800x480. Should be easy to adapt graphics for 800x800.
This is something I'd really like, so if it's not done already, someone please do it! Should I repost this in development? It may be more involved than just creating an app.
... very good question
I think the easiest solution is using a remote log in app with your computer.
The Note's screen in half equals to two 3.62" of 640x800 screens! That's 2 iPhone screens and more!
I'm sure the text/icons will be way more readable/viewable that the "mock-up" below..

is there any app which do that...?
This is not trivial as it may sound on Android.
According to Android concepts, there may only be one Activity* in the foreground.
Other pop ups and menus are not full blown activities. Android manages all the Activities.
Activities that are not in the foreground are closed to free memory up.
The only way I can see without modifying android is to find some way the widgetify an android activity so it is treated as a widget. This way you can place two apps as widgets next to each other and even resize them as you like.
* An android activity is a java class extending the Activity class, managed by android window manager.
maybe will possible soon with wind river

I can try developing one, as we can always override the system resources to believe we are outputting on 2 pixel density and reserve the processes.

Isn't there any game yet (e.g. racing game) which does exactly this?
I will putting my prototype very soon, I am already developing for this, I hope you people might extend some help, it already ripped me off by lot an amount buying some stuff to accomplish this.
It should be possible. After all there's already one App available that will do 'MultiView' and that's called Stick it! Free your Player!

Have you also tried the same developers calculator named AirCalc.
It works on the same principle and is great when you need a calculator with another App ~ i.e. EasyMoney & AirCalc.
I think better than splitting the screen into 2 would be if we can push the output via MHL to a screen and move an app there, how one can do on a PC with 2 monitors.
So watch a movie on the TV/monitor and text or use the phone on its native display.
Onskreen Cornerstone makes three windows for multitasking. It currently only works on Motorola Xoom. But it is open source and has to be incorporated into ROM. I hope some clever developer can adapt this for GNote*. Check out
