[Q] Order of Operations for New Firmware, Modem, and ROM - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello everyone. I have been away from the Android scene for awhile, and I am looking to make some changes to my VZW SGIII. I want to make sure that my current plan for upgrading makes sense and I was hoping someone here could help. Here are my current settings:
ROOTED, BOOTLOADER Unlocked, CWM installed
Android 4.2.2
Kernal: 3.4.53 Cyanogenmod
Baseband: I535VRLHE
Liquid Smooth v2.9
I would like to update my Modem, since my current option has absolutely terrible reception. According to what I have read, it seems that the best Modem option is MF1 firmware than do a ML1 Baseband update.
[Q1] Does this have to be performed with ODIN, or can I do this through CWM?
The other thing I would like to do is to update to KitKat. I have found a ROM I think I will like, C-RoM v6.5. The instructions from their thread:
"WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition + Format System)
Install the ROM from internal sdcard
Select Rom Zip And Flash, then select GAPPS of choice (doesnt have to be from below, im using PA GAPPS myself...) And Flash
Reboot And Enjoy..."
[Q2] What is the best order of operations in order to ultimately end up with MF1 w/ ML1 modem and C-RoM 6.5?
Should I do all the modem updates first and then flash ROM? Thanks!

In addition, I would also like to update my Kernal. Any suggestions as to where in this process I should update the Kernal (I would think at the end)? Also trying to decide between leankernal and KT747, anyone care to offer their experiences as far as stability, etc.?

You seem to have the right idea. All this can be install in recovery. Odin is not needed
You must update your recovery to the latest version. This is NOT Optional!
1. Wipe System & Data
1b. Flash MF1 firmware
1c. Flash ML1 modem
2. Flash ROM
3. Flash kernel (if you using something like KT747)
4. FLASH Gaaps
5. any addons
6. Reboot (if unstable reboot a 2nd time)

It's up to you. You only use one recovery. If you like TWRP then just go grab the latest version and stick to it.

EDIT: Found a zip file of CWM. Sorry! Thanks again!

Quick note, some people have been having problems with the ML/MF combo in that more then one text message can't be sent at a time. If you get one, you can send one, but only one. Some people have gone back back to MB1 modem/firmware for SMS support.
Just a heads up..

As long as you don't flash via Odin you will not increment the counter. Flashing via clockworkmod recovery is safe.
The first post of the thread where u downloaded from has instructions on how to flash. Please read it again.

I assume your phone is rooted and CWM installed.
1. Reboot in CWM ( turn off your phone , then press both volume keys and press power wait for samsung logo and relese all buttons)
2. go to backup and restore and buckaup your phone just in case go back
3. Wipe data/factory reset
4. Wipe cache partition
5. go to mount and storage and format system go back to main menu
6. install zip from sdcard
7. choose zip from sdcard
8. flash rom
10 . go back to to main menu and go to advance wipe there Dalvik Cache
11. back to main menu and reboot system now.
Wait for full reboot setup whatever you need to setup. If after rom and modem flash you will have no mobile data reflash rom again.
Good luck

my phone is root on stock firmware.

Download the rom manager app from the market. There is an option to flash cwm from there. Flash the one for the T-Mobile skyrocket.

You can flash/run various modems, kernels, and rom combinations depending on your particular wants and needs. If you want to stay close to stock, and take advantage of the symbiotic relationship between the UCLA3 rom, kernel, radio, then yes flash both UCLA3 files in cdshepherd's OP. (his ROM has the kernel included). I would suggest flashing modem (radio) first... reboot.. then boot back into CWM to flash rom. For me (and others) when the modem is flashed after rom, the data connection is lost. Follow the install instructions in the OP of the rom. Also, take a look at silver03wrx's Silver_Rom... it's stock UCLA3 but he'll be theming/deodexing it going forward. By the way, I found my HPSA+ speeds significantly increase using the combination of the UCLA3 kernel and modem. Good luck... hope this helped.
Thanks a lot DoctorQMM. That helps a lot . I think I want to stay as close to stock as possible right now while waiting for ICS. I just took the plunge and rooted my phone for the first time so I'm learning as much as I can via google/xda but sometimes I need reassurance just to make sure I don't brick the phone while doing something stupid.

[Q] No signal after upgrading

Hi All,
I flashed the new AOSPA 4.2.2 Rom on my P500.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2213967
I went through all the installation instructions:
1. FORMAT SYSTEM
2. FACTORY RESET
3. INSTALL ROM, GAPPS
4. WIPE CACHE & DALVIK CACHE
5. REBOOT
After which I no could no longer connect to my network.
I re-flashed my previous rom(the 4.1.2 by Rashed) and still I am receiving no signal.
Baseband version says unknown version.
Any help would be great.
Thanks
1) Were you having old baseband (v10) ?
2) Did you trim the ROM before flashing ?

I used to have the new baseband as I was running 4.1.2.
I used this trick to get the phone working with 4.1.2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2110929
I simply put the rom on my Sd Card, booted with clockwork recovery, performed those resets and erased the caches. Then I just installed the 4.2.2 by selecting the install via zip.
Did you flash the baseband fix with this ROM ?
You also need to trim the ROM before flashing gaaps by using Oone ROM editor (search for it on the forum)

Yes after I flashed the ASOP ROM I tried flashing the BB fix.
After I went back to 4.1.2 I flashed the BB fix and still nothing happened.
I'll try trimming the rom.

***UPDATE****
I trimmed the rom per Oonerom help instructions, formatted my SD card, still no joy...I'd like to use this rom if I could get carrier to work!

Myself and several others are using the P509 as well. The following is my method for installing ROMs::
1) Trim ROM and copy to SDCard
2) Boot device in to recovery
3) Factory reset
4) Advanced->Wipe Dalvik cache
5) Install ROM zip
6) Install old baseband patch zip ( See LG Optimus One FAQ post #9 for zip )
7) Reboot device in to new ROM
8) Optional - Install Link2SD, Mounts2SD, etc...
9) Reboot in to recovery
10) Install GApps zip
11) Boot device in to new ROM again and enjoy
Thanks!
Thanks, I'll try that method tonight!

So this is what I would recommend you do. Perform a factory reset, flash all your caches. ect. Then flash the ROM, you can trim it but mine worked fine without any trimming. If you need the extra space then trim otherwise it doesn't matter.
After the rom has been flashed reboot the phone and boot into the Operating system. After you go through any initial set up, reboot the phone and then flash the Old BB fix. reboot again into the OS. After that go ahead and flash the Google apps.

Are you with Simple Mobile? If so, the APNs aren't setup correctly. I have to manually enter my APN information after flashing a ROM. There is an APN for Simple Mobile named 'simple', however for data connections one need to be created name 'Simple DATA'. The APN information is freely available on Simple Mobiles web site or I can upload the information here.

I believe that IS the problem, all of the information in "about phone>status" is blank. I ended up flashing Rashed97's CM10 in order to have a working phone, and I have no problems. It may be that I am running too old a recovery. Back when I first rooted this phone the only recovery was Delisdre's and I'm still using it. If i knew a newer recovery that was known to work well with this phone I'd upgrade, and try that.

Settings->About Phone being blank tells me that you have the wrong radio libraries not an incorrectly setup APN. As in either old baseband with new baseband libraries or new baseband with old baseband libraries. What version of Android was on the device before it was rooted? Android 2.2 is old baseband, Android 2.3 is new baseband. It's possible that the baseband had been upgraded which is causing the confusion.

But fred's on p509 which means he's on old baseband only, same as you. I think a proper trim( maybe the libraries have not been written properly due to lack of /system space), a clean reflash & the old bb patch should work.
@ fred - do not flash gaaps. Try only the rom & the old bb patch. See if you get network after checking for proper apn. I use AmonRa recovery - works with all roms
Thanks guys, I'll try once more with a trimmed ROM and no gapps, will report back!

Install TWRP & CWM Side by Side & Radio Files?

I am trying to update my Radio/modem file with the JB Android 4.3 Radio file. It requires that I install CWM 6.0.3.7. Can I install this alongside my TWRP 2.6.3.0 installation or as I have read, it will overwrite my TWRP recovery mode? If it will overwrite, how do I switch between? Just reflash through ODIN using PDA? That seems like a lot of work and the possibilities of breaking might be high just overwriting Customer Recoveries?
If I would install this JB Radio for Android 4.3, how would I go back to GB? I can't find a single GB Radio/Modem. Could I use Radio files for GB instead of wiping and installing stock GB ROM [No Root, No Custom Recovery, but it includes the GB Radio/modem]. The reason I am worried about this, if I need to load my original stock GB 2.3.6 backup with root from my nandroid, I would need the original GB Radio and the nandroid backup/restore feature doesn't include that. All advice is greatly appreciated.

Just flash it with twrp. It'll work just like if you did it with cwm.
I have read that some of the zip files does work with TWRP as well. However I am interested in using the following Custom Rom [SuperLite AOKP JB 4.3 v1.0]. That installation requires CWM 6.0.3.7, because it will prevent the infamous black screen reboot issue. What about GB radio file & installing on top of or installing side by side TWRP & CWM?

Pick a recovery and use it. Backups are not cross compatible. If you make a backup with cwm it won't work with twrp.
You can flash radios with either. Just pick one.

If you have not already installed a 4.3 ROM, then you are recommended (nay, required) to use CWM 6.0.3.7 to do the initial wipe and install, after that you can switch to TWRP for any flashing after that. There is something that 6.0.3.7 does to the data partition that TWRP doesn't, on the initial setup. Once that is done, it doesn't matter. Flash the JB radio when you flash the 4.3 ROM. And going back to GB if you need to is fairly simple, just follow Vincom's guide. There are lots of flashable zips of GB radios you can use.
I am still a bit confused regarding TWRP & CWM being installed at the same time or side by side. So, let me get this straight. If I want to install JB 4.3 ROM, I must first boot into ODIN, install CWM through ODIN, reboot, boot into CWM, wipe the system, reboot, boot back into ODIN, install TWRP, reboot, boot into TWRP, install the JB 4.3 ROM, and finally preform the last reboot. Is this correct & it won't break either of the custom recoveries? However rpr69 said "switch back to TWRP." Are you inferring TWRP & CWM can be installed side by side? If so, how do I access one over the other?
Regarding GB's radio files:
Which of the following links is the Radio/modem files? Is it the second one? I know of them is the official stock ROM and the other requires the OTA updates. However the poster didn't include the OTA updates yet...

I know you posted but its confusing, let me simplify, I hope:
im assuming you have either cwm or twrp installed, if on stock read this.
you cannot have two recoveries installed at the sametime:
recovery install procedure:
if not on cwm6037 flash cwm6037 with what ever recovery you have now and reboot back into recovery.
then flash any custom jb4.3 rom, preferably latest cm10.2 nightly found here and reboot rom at least twice.
if you like cwm 6037 stay with it, I don't, or else just flash twrp 2.6.3.0 w/cwm 6037 and reboot back into recovery or rom.
now you can just stay w/the cm10.2 nightly you flashed with cwm 6037 or flash any other rom w/twrp 2.6.3.0 which is now your installed recovery.
that's it you should not have the reboot problems on any jb4.3 roms.

above recovery install procedure is only if a jb4.3 rom on its 2nd reboot just has a black screen and wont boot into rom, but 2nd boot does usually take longer than normal upto a full minute.
if flashing a rom or restoring from nandroid(recovery backup) prior to jb4.3 and then later decide to flash a jb4.3 rom you need todo above recovery installation procedure b4 flashing a jb4.3 rom.
restoring backups only work with whatever recovery they were made with, you cannot restore a cwm backup w/twrp recovery and vice a versa.
newest versions of recoveries should restore backups made with their older versions.
why do u want an old radio, they will not work w/jb roms
old radios are linked in the 1stop sticky under "old stuff".
installing the radio has nothing todo with the recovery you are using.
flash jb radios for jb roms which happen to be all the current roms.
reread the radio section in the 1stop sticky.
I linked this post in the recovery section of the 1stop sticky
Thank you vincom for explaining the process of using both CWM 6.0.3.7 & TWRP 2.6.3.0 together. I am familiar with backups ONLY working with their original customer recovery. I didn't even think about older versions of backups (not) working with newer custom recoveries. Was there an issue working with older backups in the past?
The reason I need the old GB Radio/Modem files, because when I have to return the phone to stock & load up my old Gingerbeard nandroid, I will be able to return it back to AT&T with the original Radio files and the original Gingerbeard OS. Anywho, thank you for the GB radio. I really appreciate it!

u can return any phone that has any stock firmware, with our phones that would be stock jb4.1.2 and using odin would be the way to do it , link in my sig. this is assuming your carrier used the latest firmware as with att and rogers.

these are untouched full official stock firmwares( radio, recovery, kernel and apps/bloatware), just use odin and flash whatever version you want, all info is in the restore to stock sticky

nope, both are fine and are still available officially. You don't need gingerbread to return it.

I have to go to Samsung's website and download their Kies software to upgrade to Jelly Bean right? It won't be pushed out through Settings > About Phone > System Update then?
Or you can use Odin.

So if you're flashing 4.3 ROMs just use cwm? Went from twrp to cwm and back to twrp and am getting the same black boot screen on a slim 4.3 weekly.

To properly set everything up, you need to use the recommended CWM for 4.3, do a full factory wipe, and make sure that data is formatted. Then install the ROM and boot it up. Reboot to verify it works properly. Then you can go to TWRP 2.6.0.1 or later.
I've been using twrp since release and not had any issues why do we need cwm? What's the technical reasoning.

Didn't work
I followed this procedure exactly and it still didn't work.
I gave it ten minutes between boots and ended up having to pull the battery each of the three times I rebooted.
Fortunately I've gotten into the habit of making a backup before flashing, so it was just a loss of 45 minutes of my evening.
I was trying to get the latest CM10.2 Stable build. Has anyone gotten this thing to flash and work as well as 10.1.3 RC2 or 10.1.3 Final? This issue started for me with the second 10.2 Nightly.

Just NOW began seeing the replies to the main post. I don't have ANOTHER fresh install in me: I've already had to do that twice with the 2012 Nexus7 and once with the Skyrocket in the last six weeks.

[Q] Kitkat compatible CWM for Infuse?

Hi everyone, I have been searching this forum to find a CWM that is compatible with KitKat and the infuse 4g. I tried the ROM manager app, but this device is not compatible. Plus I'm trying to meet the post requirement before I can ask this question in dev forum...not a great rule. cuz that way i have to post 10 posts that i don't want to post before I post the one I want.

you just have to flash the roms from the base rooted GB with CWM/RED recovery then update GB ---> ICS----->JB----->KK and the CWM version updates itself and each KK rom has its own CWM version
Thanks.
Thank you.

Do you need to flash in that order.. GB > ICS > JB > KK ? because I just flashed GB with CWM then to whatever next rom happen to be without issue. Each version got it's own kernel/cwm so why need to go thru all that. Just curious.

its recommended....i have tried to jump from gb to kk before but then it wouldn't boot the rom so i put into download mode and went back to stock gb the went to ics then jb then every kk rom out there
Hmm.. weird because I have no issue jumping from GB to the current KK or any other rom.. you just need to turn lagfix off b4 u install other rom.

yep.. let see what 4.4.3 has to offer. Got a couple of days to play around.
For some devices flashing straight from stock just works. If you have red CWM it is a bad candidate and should use ICS as an intermediary. But you can be on GB and not have red CWM (rather blue or green I forget which), as was the case when I first flashed up. This may be your case as well.
Its not the version of the OS that matters, rather the spread of CWM versions. At least that is my understanding of the situation.

I think it's a matter of steps you take from GB to the next rom. For me:
1. GB stock with root.
2. Install sgs kernel flash and flash kernel with CWM (Synthesis).
3. Go into CWM and disable lagfix if it's enabled.
4. Update your flavor rom in recovery mode. NOTE: You will need to flash twice since 1st time give you a warning about partitions.
5. Once flashed it will auto reboot.... HERE you need to remove the battery to power off.. put battery back in and go into recovery mode and flash the rom again since the previous flash only install the new recovery.
6. Install Gapp.
7. CWM: wipe Cache Partition
8. CWM: Advanced > wipe Dalvik Cache
9. Reboot.

Because I have the Rogers variety, my step 2 uses a different product (the name escapes me but I use ODIN to flash it) and I was able to skip over step 3 (not sure if it was even an option). Overall I had red CWM, but the first time CWM was green (or blue). I think the difference in versions had to do that I installed ROM Manager the first time around and tried to install the i9000 (or something) CWM image. It wasn't successful, but it looks like it made some impact.
Out of curiousity, what colour was your CWM in Gingerbread? Synthesis may be using a newer (more forgiving) version.
red cwm 2.5.1.3 after the kernel flashed.

TowerRoot + Autorec + Cyanogen Mod

When I found out that Towel Root can finally root my 4.4.2 LG G2 (D801) from T-Mobile I was very excited to try it, so I went ahead and installed it. It worked of course, very well. so I continued to install Autorec, which restarted into TWRK Recovery. Great!
I wipe Dalvik & Cache and flash the Stable Cyanogen 10.2 rom from 2013, and now it's stuck on boot. Also tried with the latest nightly to same outcome.
What am I missing here?

CM builds use JB kernel and baseband. You'll need to find the right JB baseband for your phone and flash it and then the CM build you want to use.

Baseband is your modem. Install the zip in recovery before installing your rom. Install baseband/modem, full wipe, install rom.
You should find what you need here> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451426
I suggest you read up on this stuff a little to get more familiar.

The only problem is, I can't do a full wipe because I have to keep the ZIP files of Cyanogen Mod and Gapps on the device. There is no way to load them on the device when in TWRP.
Also, that post is very confusing. It has a list of roms, and then a download link to a completely different list. How do I know which download correlates with:
D801BK (T-Mobile USA)
D80110C
M8974A-AAAANAZM-1.0.190034
by QUALCOMM, Incorporated Aug 10 2013
Is it LGD801_10C_RADIO.zip ??

OK I tried again, flashed LGD801_10C_RADIO.zip before the Cyanogen zip, then Gapps and Supersu, restarted and it's doing the same thing. Cyanogen screen loading animation but never booting up.
Like I said before, I CANNOT do a full wipe in TWRP because that will delete all the ZIP files on the device. This device does not have an SD card I can load them on and the USB connection doesn't work (driver not found, this is apparently a known bug).

With TWRP can't in the wipe section you do an advanced wipe and just not select internal storage, thus leaving the ROM on your phone while still doing a full wipe?
TheBestEver said:
Full wipe means the "factory reset" option in TWRP. You're on kitkat bootloader. You need to somehow find a flsshable .zip of the jb bootloader. Modem doesn't matter. I've used JB and KK modem and both work. Maybe you're on stock KK kernel and need to flash the JB kernel? If you're on KK stock and want to jump to CM you should find a flashable .zip of both kernels or .IMG times and try that as well if option 1 doesn't work. Sorry

Both of which still run 4.2 sources. Before u flash either , what must occur first is flash the 4.2 jb modem then Rom etc.

You can find the KK modem in the SOKP thread in Development and that may help.
