Samsung Design Chief Steps Down - Verizon Galaxy S 5 General

http://money.cnn.com/2014/05/08/technology/mobile/samsung-mobile-design/index.html?hpt=hp_t2
Trouble at Samsung!!?? Maybe the former design chief locked down the S5 too good.....

If I had to guess it would be some kind of behind the scenes scandal. Samsung among a few other companies like Hyundai basically have all the power in Korea.
Sent from my SM-G900V using Xparent Skyblue Tapatalk 2

Verizon phones are locked down by Qualcomm. Efuses are built in by carrier spec in order to control network integrity through the limiting of lower level access. Samsung doesn't have a dog in the fight except the quantity of users vs other manufacturers. I'm sure he got fired because the galaxy line hasn't seen a major break through since the s3.
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk

A design chief has absolutely nothing to do with the internals of a device or "locking" status, they simply "design" it - and this design didn't get favorable reviews. That's the reason most major tech sites (not CNN money) are saying he resigned.

Whoever decided no 32GB option and locking down the VZW S5- those are the people that should be stepped on- er down

androids dead.. wait a minute

Hope the link works. In before this is old news noob search first.
Tldr: android holds 51% of all smart phones in use. Apple 30%

If other companies were allowed to release ios devices I dony doubt the number being higher. I guess iPhone users were going around saying iPhone has sold more numbers and theres more iPhones being used than and how android has slowed down in sales due to the new iPhone.
It was more an article that says android is more popular than iPhone in terms of the number of users than anything.
Its because android runs on so many price brackets its available to everyone from low end to way above anything iPhone could ever be android is a platform for everyone and I love it that way

I wonder if that guy had both a Lumina and an iPhone in his ass to assist typing that article.
Lots of different stories on this today, but beyond the Android dominance is Samsung kicking ass in general.

Not far behind Apple, and when you factor in that at least 26% of the parts used in making iPhones are made by Samsung, guess who's really at the top...

How the world turns. I remember when i see samsung products at kmart as the el cheapo brand 15 years ago. And now they are bigger than Sony.
true all true. If you look at the big picture, iPhone has integrated most media devices to work cohesively, syncing all with that wretched iTunes. Samsung has gone a drop further and integrated Android or Android compatible software into everything they sell: washer/dryer, fridge, camera, windows (the kind you look through), phones, tablets, printers, etc. Samsung wants to be a powerhouse, quite literally. I really do think this step is a well thought out program.

Man, I hate itunes! Worst thing, ever!
Apple is doing great business. Brainwash users to believe that cheaper smaller screens is what they want and that they should pay a premium price. And that not having Flash, external memory card slot is something in their best interest. Never mind the fact that people still use flash on their computer browsers on the average a dozen times a day. And if they had a memory card slot, they would probably have a memory card in there. Point out something Apple is doing to rip off their customers, and the customers who are being taken advantage of are on the side of Apple.
How hard can Apple squeeze the teets of their users until they say uncle?

Actually I gotta thank apple for not including flash. It really is finally dying to html5 and that is a GREAT thing. I don't think people realize how many flash like elements are not actually flash anymore. HTML5 is all over the place now. Apple and facebook have been the main reason for flash to die
I do find it funny that most of your issues with iPhones are now the "big thing" with newer androids.

Percentage of retention would probably be the most accurate mark of who is doing best. How many Droid users stay on Droid and how many switch to iPhone. And same on the other side. Higher retention is really who is winning. I know about a year and a half ago an article I read said at the time apple had a higher rentention than Droid.

They are currently under contract but when that contract is up I would tell Apple to piss off. The chips account for 9 percent of Samsungs sales....personally I think that is worth losing when you get to watch Apple use inferior chips that piss their customers off and cost them sales.
There will be an appeal... this isn't over.

The money is nothing, this is going to change the design of every Samsung and possible Android product. The money is the smallest part. They were found to be infringing on every patent contested, while Apple was guilty of none.
It doesn't matter if they appeal, everything went as bad as possible for Android today and Samsung's statement reflected that.
The game is now changed. This is going to reverberate very loudly and badly through a lot of areas we aren't even ready to consider yet.

Although Android is on the climb, I agree that bragging now is a little premature. Anyone who is anyone knows the iPhone 5 is coming out most likely later this month. Very few people are buying the 4S knowing that. Bragging about a device that's only a few months old vs a phone most people know is done as the flagship for Apple this month is a little out there.

Easy tiger... this is what happens the month before a launch. People always hold off and other companies try to push their stuff out in the summer to lock in customers. I'm a big fan of the S3. Unfortunately most people are sheep when it comes to Apple.
I dont wanna be that guy that craps on everyones happy (because trust me I love this news) but is one possibility for this turn out because people are holding out on buying the IPhone in august because they know the 5 is coming out?
You guys do realize that no normal person with any common sense at all would buy an iPhone 4S right now with the new 5 coming out, right?

meh. Apple fans will tout the 5 as the best phone ever. It'll have a retina display, and just saying retina display is cool. I'm sure it'll be a great product with a bunch of cool features that are perfectly fine for the average user and it will win the ease of use battle. We'll see what the hardware is, but I'm guessing it'll be inferior to the S3 but good enough.
If for nothing else I hate Iphones for the control they have over what you do with YOUR phone. want to add software that's not approved by Apple? Sorry. Want to add a song that was emailed to you? Sorry. That list goes on & on. On the other hand I'll admit that they make a great product that is very user friendly. The IP5 will outsell the GS3 in the last quarter of this year, probably by a lot.

Why? Has this been successful with any other phone? I have never seen any evidence that AT&T cares. Samsung designed this way because AT&T wanted it this way, so petitioning Samsung won't matter. The only thing that will matter is not buying from AT&T (or Verizon) in the future.

And where is it official that the Google Edition will not include any functionality for all the new sensors, etc? You do release that Samsung has the source code right? And as one of Google's closest manufacturing partners.... It's still rather unlikely that they'd ship a $650 flagship phone with all its key features gimped... Right?
I mean, it totally could happen, but I find it rather unlikely that it'll be that much worse than a regular GS4. And before you go on a "it's all baked into TouchJizz therefore it can't work without it" style rant, that's simply not true. Again, Samsung designed the fricking phone, I'm pretty sure they can expose an intelligent interface to their fancy new sensors without the TW framework if they wanted.
Nothing is set in stone yet, but don't assume that these types of questions haven't been thought of, and possible solutions found, by the smart folks at Google and Samsung.
The $$$ on the other hand versus a Nexus 4, is a different question. Clearly the GS4 is a much better phone, but a 2x more expensive phone? Probably not.

Uhh because a lot of that stuff isn't built into aosp yet?? Same reason why they already said the One Google edition won't use the IR blaster. Its not that Samsung isn't capable of doing it, its that I doubt Google will let them being that its supposed to be stripped down vanilla android. Verizon messed with the galaxy nexus and are rumored to have been discluded from further nexuses because of it. We could also all shut up and stop speculating until it comes out

so technically you can get two cheaper for the price of one. And you speak as if I don't think Google could add those features in, I know they made the code. But I also know that they are going to follow the footsteps HTC did when they released their Google edition. Its the lines of Google edition to make it as bone stock as possible. As long as the OS runs with the camera and calling that's what matters to them. Yes maybe down the road Samsung will give an update for the sensors, but that will be down the road. Also the GE won't be the last of the line. When they ship the red, blue, brown, and purple they will be shipped with standard touchwiz.

It only has 26 signatures because most of us know that there is not sufficient user-base outrage for this practice to change.
The logic is as follows:
Group 1) I'd garner that 70-80% of all AT&T Galaxy S4 owners are unaware of what Linux is, let alone it's relation to their phone. So forget about bootloaders, and signing chains, and stuff like that. It's all greek to them. They just want to browse the web, visit Facebook, and send text messages. If it happens on a slim phone with a big pretty screen, then they're happy.
Group 2) There's maybe another 10-15% who actually understand the underlying concepts of Android/Linux etc, but who have no interest in modifying their phones. Those are techy or semi-techy people, who again, really just want to browse the web, use apps, and have a slim pretty phone.
Group 3) That leaves about 5-10% who actually desire to "modify" anything about their phone, and have any technical ability to do so.
Group 4) Out of that 5-10%, many of those people don't understand the intricacies of the boot process (or signature signing), and just "follow directions closely" to get what they want, and go home happy. That's probably the majority of visitors to XDA, which leaves....
Group 5) At most 5% of all AT&T Galaxy S4 users. These people actually understand how Android/Linux/boot chain process works, at least at a higher level. Don't ask them to read the source code, but they get the general idea.
Group 6) These are the people who actually understand and actually decide/agree to spend their time signing the petition.
Now to be fair, these numbers are as accurate as either the 2004 presidential election results or the number of secret NSA warrants issued every year. Aka, they're not very accurate. But I think you get the picture.
Even in the best case scenario, where you get 100% of Group 5 to sign, and god forbid, maybe even 100% of Group 4, that's still barely enough of a user base for AT&T to even consider your argument. And there's likely no reason they'd acquiesce anyway. While it's a big bummer to us modders, I'm sure there is a reason AT&T chose to go to the trouble of "locking the bootloader". In theory, it's a nice idea if you're selling to, I dunno, the government, or a big corporation... Your sales pitch is: "We use hardware in the phone to prevent modifying, so that when you go visit China, or wherever, we can 100% guarantee that no software bugs were installed in your phone. Secure bootloader means we can guarantee the entire process from boot up, to application loading, meaning your data is secure in our hands." Or some bullsh1t like that. Believe me, the reason at&t did it is for profit, but not to profit by screwing us modders over, to profit by engaging in a sales pitch to a select but profitable group of customers (who aren't you or me).
So long story short, it's a lost cause.
you have serious problems in math..
by the way, many people could be in the group that "just fallows directions closely" and still would like the bootloader to get unlocked (because someone with knowledge will take that advantage, create roms or whatever and share them with obviously, the "easy instructions to fallow"..

Either way, point stands that no petition is gonna change the situation. And that less than 30 people have signed said petition. That part ain't math, or subjective.
And as I also said, there's still the plane option...

Even if there were 100K signatures, unless people buy a different product so that the carrier sees it hurting their revenue, they have no incentive.
How many people ditched AT&T to buy the t-mobile version? Not many. So an unlocked boot loader, even with cheaper data plans, is not enough to fuel consumer outrage.
Petitions are meaningless if there are no consequences. If t-mo ever gets better coverage, I may switch, but until then any threat to leave by me is empty. I think AT&T knows that.
I signed petition and I sent it to many friends via email to bring attention to the matter. Maybe someone can post in Facebook and any other sites?? Im also considering donation towards bounty for developers who unlock bootloader or alternative methods of adding recovery.
I think what will add weight to this issue is the fact that you cannot do a factory data reset and that KIES complains about the firmware.
Some people with legit issues contacting Samsung for support may be instructed to "power off unit - hold volume down and power on - blah blah blah" which gets you to the android screen with message "cannot boot into normal mode"
Samsung cannot even suggest to anyone to reapply firmware to fix issues at this time.
How do I know this? I called them because I get "Unfortunately, Music has stopped" error message when I use the default music player and asked for help. I was given several things to try which got nowhere and then they wanted to open a ticket to ship my phone in for repair, which I declined saying "I need my phone as it is my primary source of communication for home and work and cannot be without it for weeks". Then I got the survey at the end, to which I complimented the support effort but am beyond upset with Samsungs product as a simple thing like Music not working requires me to ship back the phone. $700 for a phone that "just about works" definitely will influence my next purchase.
Why is the s3 unlocked but not the s4? I had the Sony ion and decided to get a new phone, my contract isn't up for a year and some change so I just bought it out right off eBay for 310$ brand new. Its unlocked and when I had my s2 I had tasks AOKP running on it. So why lock the 4?

Samsung sells 20 Million Galaxy S4s !

Hey guys.
Here is the news again. Just keep in mind that from the word "Sold" , samsung means "Shipped" to retailers and not the actual consumer. For those who thought S4 isn't doing well compared to the mega hit S3, read the quote below:
Samsung has sold over 20 million Galaxy S4 units (supply basis) in a span of two months. The figure was apparently confirmed by JK Shin to Korean reporters and will help refute the speculation about lower-than-expected sales of Galaxy S4.The phone went on sale in late April and reached the milestone by end of June. In comparison, Galaxy S III took 100 days to reach the same 20 million mark.

Doesn't mean anything to me.
I just checked the price of s4, it dropped 1000DKK during the past 1 month since I bought it.
I know that the price will drop but never expect it will drop so fast like this.
S4 sales into the channel (retailers, service providers, distributors) have been fine, it's sell through that's been the issue and there's no independent confirmed numbers available anywhere. However it's clear from component supplier information and the drop in Sammies share price that sales are less then exemplary. Having read quite a few comparative reviews the S4 is not beating the HTC One (often HTC small win or draw) so the impact on Sammie won't be seen till next quarter and I'm expecting further price drops.
Haven't bought an S4 yet but if the screen on the active is good that's where I'm heading.

That info comes from South Korean sources, nothing official. Considering Samsung has 70%+ mobile market share in Europe and spends 30% more on marketing than Apple, I wouldn't be surprised if these figures are true.
It is not so surprising. I live in Italy and i can assure you that getting a HTC one (direct S4 competitor) is almost impossible due to availability. SO a lot of ppl is getting sgs4 out of bother for waitng HTC and moreover Samsung is pushing its marketing to the limits.
It's now 20.000.001, my brother bought GS4 yesterday

And it is actually selling much better than the HTC one.
it was always going to sell very well it was kind of a given
Samsung has a rapist arse load of $$$$ for marketing even more than apple so don't be surprised if they'd sell this much
