Why? - Samsung Galaxy Core

Im so confused how this mid range phone doesnt have dev's making roms or kernels. . You could say their are some roms but its not enough for some users like me. . Specialy i really wish we have a stable kernel atleast one. . This phone is really nice for its price. . Decent specs, its camera is very good,1gb ram is very decent for a dual core and for its price point. . I really like this phone. .

wel.. you have to buy it.. we have it already.. hehe.
fitrst: I would never buy a 500 euro phone.
I got it for free with my new contract....
About what ya wanna hear....
I really like the phone.....
It does everything I expect from it...
There are a few things HTC forgot , but with a little bit of help in this community it all works quite good...
And 4 me all the annoying things are solved here...
Offcourse everyone has another opinion.. but the most people here in the pro section are satisfied users...at least that's what I understand....
The phone is very simple in use....it's handy... and you can do a lot with it....
the new version of windows mobile is running smootly as well here...
I like the windows because there are SO many apps you can use...
The performance is good
the functionality is good
the camera is good
all fine for me...
But I'M PROBABLY NOT A HEAVY USER....
I guess I'm somewhere in the middle ...
well good luck with your decision..
agreed with above.... works pretty well and the major complaint I hear is that the battery is crap but I get 3 days out of it given I dont bluetooth or wifi.
I won't go into the good things so just assume everything ios good for me.
Only points to note that bother me some are:
1) when the phone locks... the volume buttons still work...WTF and that is really annoying and I have yet to figure out how to stop this. I tried reading the millions of pages here on this forum but have yet to find anything to install so this will be fixed.
2) heaver then normal phones. For me I'm use to using nokia or SE phones so when I switched to a WM based phone, the weight takes some getting use to. If u have been a WM user all along, u wont have this problem... really a personal beef I'd say.
3) Thickness.... it pretty thick in my opinion but only because its height and width are pretty compact which makes the phone seem think in the hand... I get its pretty much the same size as other WM based phone but still getting use to it.
I take it ur lvl of expertise is not as shallow as mine as I'm still very new at WM so I dare not touch flash the ROMs or tweak the registry because if I F it up, then I have no clue how to fix it.....
For u to write on thie forum is already half the battle won as the ppl here as the best bunch I've seen and the developers here are awesome...
To ur original question, I would rate this phone 4.5/5 if ur into WM phones. You can consider the Diamond BUT u will hv to live with shorter battery life and a bit of slower performance du to half the internal memory RAM. My 2 cents worth, hope it helps u out a bit.

Should I Buy This ?

The only thing stops me from buying this device is the scene of this semi-dead section which isn't full of developers like the rest of the sections, it scares me that the phone won't get any support .. which is similar to what happened to my Samsung Wave and now it's sold
No, I won't root my phone until the company pulls the support which is probably pretty soon, maybe when they admit that they won't get no Ice Cream. i'm worried about support in general and updates ... and the availability of accessories. Is it worth it ? Cause it sits right on my budget
And how's the sound quality ? That's like the main priority for me.
Thanks in advance.
There are a few developers, and I think it will get going when AlpharevX is released (when though, no idea, was supposed to be the end of June!)
Sound quality is great through headphones, compared to the Desire HD it is far superior. Speaker is not too loud but not awful either and the quality of sound from the speaker is generally good too.
Desire s will be discontiinued imo so you best get yourself a popular phone.Desire s hardware not capable of running sense 3.0 or ice cream update so its the end of the road.
@Hookguy i'll probably wait until AlpharevX is released soon and if not i'll get myself a Galaxy S, thanks man
@Pill I couldn't care less about the OS model as long as it has anything I need, but I think it's true I should get a more popular phone therefore i'll wait until AlpharevX is released, thanks
whats up with the constant bashing on the DS?
its a fkn sick device, fast, stable, ... all u expect from a phone.
Well, comparing to the galaxy S, The Desire S works better in my opinion... the Galaxy S have intolerable lags, and less ram....the GPU is almost the same.. i tested both already... Desire S can run Every single game that exists atm
I dont know what to say.. the desire s works perfect.. why you need to can flash other roms when then stock one works perfect... ?

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it .. I set my mind on getting this phone. You'll see me in this section soon.
Anyways, at the moment.. flashing a new rom free is 100% available and pretty much easy so... decide
Well, i'm pretty sure that due to a software s-off, more devs will come soon.
Why not if you're looking for a 3.7" device.
And things are just starting to heat up.

[Q] Is this an OK "wife phone"?

Considering buying this for my wife as her first smartphone. Personally I have a SGS2.
Is this "free" from serious bugs, OK battery time, OK camera and fast enough for everyday use for a smartphone newbie?

YEs it is a very good wife phone!! Me and my dad both have nexus s, mine is rooted and custom roms and etc, his i stock..
A friend of mine also has a SGS2 and we dont discover any performance differences when using normal apps (only when opening heavy games the SGS2 is faster).
Battery life: I get at least 1 day with minimal 3 hours of screeen on time
So my advise, do it!

Sure is.
My GF bought her Nexus S about 6 months ago. She was about to buy a regular Nokia phone and I convinced her to buy an Android. At first she told me "what would I do with apps"
Now she has tons of apps installed, uses widgets, installed 3g watchdog all by herself, etc etc.
The only issue we had was with the launcher : the stock launcher was a bit unstable at time : she would drag an app shortcut around and when dropped, it would vanish... I suggested she installs ADW Launcher and since then, no problems.
Battery life is OK. She charges it up every 2 day with her regular use. If she plays games, a charge everynight is needed.
The camera is good (not great) but better than mine (currently owning a iPhone 3gs).
One thing : before anything else, unlock the phone and install ClockworkRecovery... That way you'll be able to do backups! We decided to do so after a week of usage and unlocking will wipe everything on the phone...
Great phone I wish I had one myself!
Hehe. I'd say the NS is better than your sgs2. So yes.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I'd say only if your willing to flash a couple of roms. The stock experience is not as user friendly as the modded software. If you are not willing to flash maybe look at a sense or touchwiz (what you have on you sg2). This is a dev phone so its really intended for those interested in development. With that said, I'd get it for my wife since I'm willing to flash something like miui on it.
in a word, YES!
the nexus s is a great phone.
IMO , SGS2 is a better , brighter , newer , faster phone ... But BIG for a woman hand ....
Nexus S is a wonderful phone for developers and techy guys , would not be a good woman phone , just my opinion .... Fast yes , stylish yes , Camera not that great ...

why is it not a good phone for a woman? what are you talking about?? you don't HAVE TO unlock bootloader, root, flash custom roms, kernels etc.
its a great phone for anyone. the camera is fine except in low light. no big deal.
and btw the op is using the sgs2 himself, its not a choice between the two!
i'm getting a gnex and my mom is taking my nexus s and she has used it already and loves it! my mom is terrible with phones and technology and has no problems with the nexus s.

what are you talking about ? I'm not picking a fight here , I said IMO ....
yes , Nexus S is excellent choice for those who want to unlock bootloader , install kernel and flash ROMs ..... otherwise , there are many Samsung options out there that might appeal to some people ... And yes the camera is not good for somebody who wants a good and fast camera (like I do) ... that's in addition to being a 5MP camera while most modern camera phones has 8MP (and faster performance)...
Developer stuffs are big plus to Nexus S , otherwise it's a phone among tens of other Samsung ones ... IMO
Ask your wife for her opinion (Or should it be a surprise?)
I- as a rather experienced Android user- would say it's pretty easy to use (like most Android phones with decent hardware like the Nexus S which should be rather cheap for what it does now), and also the UI is stylish imo (if you've updated to ICS).
The formfactor may be just right (no huge slap, 4 inches are possibly a perfect size for the use case. It is not a super slim device (in general not really the phone for design fetishists) but the curved screen makes it a bit easier to use, especially when using it for phone calls.
Go for galaxy plus. Ns had only one draw back...its single core hence ics experience isn't at its best.

I love my Nexus S and it's easy to use as any Android phone. Hardware is beautiful but i consider Nexus S is overpriced if you are not going to "play" with roms and that kind of stuff.
It really depends what kind of woman your wife is, what she likes and what things she'd want to use the phone for. The only consensus I've seen among women's phones is size--very big screens such as the SGSII or GNex isn't popular. The NS is borderline large, but can still fit nicely in a purse or slim jeans and is comfortable to use with one hand. Some women would prefer smaller.
If camera's important for her, you might want to check out the SE Xperia line. I think the NS' camera is mediocre.
If she's not comfortable with flashing stuff, you can pick one of the stable custom ROM or kernel to improve on performance and battery life, then proceed to admire our shiny ICS with envy.

[Q] Sony Xperia S or Sony xperia SP??

Hello everyone, i want to buy a new smartphone and i'm really confused. After searching a lot (i mean a lot!) , i narrowed down my choice to these two,i.e, sony xperia s and upcoming sony xperia sp (my budget is not that high for those fancy s3,s4 or htc one). Now, i'm confused more than before that which one should i go for, i could really use some advice from the experts out here (yeah noob here :silly: ). And please keep the topic to these two only, don't wanna go to a hospital 'cause of serious pain in head .
I am in the same boat as you because I considered upgrading but at the same time don't have the necessary budget. Between the two though choice becomes do you want 4G support, upgraded bluetooth and other features such as NFC and the new GPS system (GLONASS). I am personally waiting for the Xperia SP to come out so I can compare the two in my hand. Alternatively I might settle for the Xperia T as a midpoint of the two.
What do you think?

Yeah, really confused between the two. I live in New delhi, India , so 4g does not really matter for me (not available here). I don't care much about upgraded bluetooth as i don't use it very often but still nice to have a newer version . NFC, oh yes , i would love to try it, but i think it's available with both of them, isn't it?? .
Umm idk much about that new gps system but i would like to know about it .
I'm also waiting for XSP to release here (probably on 24apr) and get my hands on it in a nearby store and also waiting for the jelly bean update for the XS and see what it has to offer .
What i am confused about is should i go for the new hardware or the old one, because i don't think it won't matter much since both phones are dual cores. Yeah i know i know, there is a big difference between the two phones in benchmarks , but i don't think it will matter much in real daily life usage , like messaging , social sites, browsing, watching videos and a little gaming . Or will it??
Also, i'm more comfortable with 4.3 inch screen than a 4.6 inch one , don't ask why :cyclops: but i really like the power button placement in the XSP . OH GOSH I'M SO CONFUSED .

NFC will have more features on the XSP compared to XS since it will have updated support through Jellybean OS.
GLONASS allows for a quicker and more accurate GPS detection through the phone and is much more reliable than the older system.
I agree benchmarks aren't important unless you are a power user and do lots of intense gaming and other applications. I also have an inclination to a slightly smaller screen but if the phone is worth it can make an exception
Overall if you want the smoothest system your best bet would be to use a custom rom like CyanogenMod or another version on your phone. Stock Sony ICS is not that great in any case. That way you can remove a lot of the unnecessary apps. I do believe there are stable versions of jellybean 4.2.2 for the XS also on the forums here on XDA :good:
An improvement that I am looking forward to is the STAMINA mode on XSP which should double battery life at least. Can read about it online through Sony website or online previews regarding the phone.
I think best thing is wait another week or two and play with both phones then make a decision. You have waited this long after all

hmm okay....yup i'm not that into hardcore gaming on my phone, have my pc for that . I rarely Play games on my phone, the ones i play are those small games like cut the rope , trial xtreme , cogs ,etc nothing like gta or those fancy gameloft games . I mostly am concerned about the battery life of the phone because usually 3g is like always on for me, and texting all day with friends on whatsapp , FB , etc.. So XSP's bigger battery is really what's making me buy that phone (other features as well ) , don't wanna carry a charger with me all the time :silly: and also i love that notification transparent strip of the XSP...whereas XS has better camera and more pixels coz of the 4.3 inch screen rather than 4.6 . I Also read over the internet that stock ics of XS is bit laggy so let's see what jelly bean update does :fingers-crossed: , or there will custom roms here as usual :highfive: .
All i can do is wait for it to release . Btw does 4.6 or 4.3 inch really make that much difference in size and both screens are same right, i mean tft?? Sorry i am a complete noob here...
And Ohh XT is not available here in India, So don't have that option :'(

I am confused between the two because of the camera performance . But I would suggest you to Xperia SP if its under your budget , because its probably the best midrange device in the market now , even beats previous years quad core devices ( s3,one-x ..) in terms of performance . Just wait for the camera review of SP because some early reviews say that the camera performance is poor than the rest of features it gives . And if camera is not a ground breaker for you then no doubts you should go and buy it , so far it looks a promising device . Xperia S probably wont get Android 5 , but the chances of SP getting it is more .If the camera is decent on final units then SP is the best device to buy .
edit- you also get whopping 2370 mAh battery

Yeah , you are right about the camera of XSP , the review i saw here was also saying that the camera of the XSP is not that good as expected :
http://asia.cnet.com/product/sony-xperia-sp-46728910.htm
It's an early review , so i'll wait for some more reviews to know about the camera quality. It's a real shame that considering the price of the phone we don't get a good camera , but won't jump onto conclusions yet!:fingers-crossed:
XS took so long to get jelly bean (still not updated yet) , so yea you can be right that it won't get Android 5( limepie?? ) and XSP probably will as it is newer phone but , in case of sony there is a big BUT , we have seen how late sony releases the android upgrade on it's phones .
Also, what about the viewing angles of the screen ?? i have read that they are pretty bad on both handsets...:silly:

Does viewing angle matter? If someone is looking at it they we won't be holding the screen at a sharp angle so they can't see the whole picture
I think that is an unnecessary point of contention. If anything I want a smaller viewing angle so when I am on the bus or something I don't have someone else peeking at my screen. I prefer a bit of privacy

I dont know if viewing angles is deal breaker . We all see the phone from front most of the times , i dont know why reviews compare the viewing angles . The normal viewing display will be great as its sony device with bravia engine 2 . Now just wait for a full review by some reputed websites . Then go and see the device on a local store , because you are paying this much amount so you should do research so that u dont regret it later . I am doing the same . I will wait for a month until i get in a college and then decide what i am gonna buy ,for me things will be clear till that ( it will also make me clear that how many people will actually buy it and how good community it will have on xda ) . If you cant wait then wait for camera samples of final retail units , if you are satisfied with camera then its the best device out there (there seems no issues with anything else ) .Otherwise You totally get value for money in SP , no doubts and it is future proof. BTW it depends on how you use your device , if you are not going to use this much performance then frankly telling you that you should not waste money on this . If you use a phone just for normal things then xperia s/sl is also good when it gets JB . :good:
Hmm you both are right, mostly seeing the screen from the front , but when you are with someone or some friends and want to share a video with them then might be a problem....but that shouldn't be much of a problem, stupid of me to bring that question .
XS has a low battery life btw which really makes me don't wanna buy it , i am so much frustrated with my current phones battery life ( wildfire s LOL ) which i just want to throw in a sewer .

[Q] Xperia Miro/Tipo/J ICS Kernels

Hey all,
I'm new to the forum and I really wasn't sure where to put this thread so I hope this is okay. I'm personally very new to Android customization and unlike some who seem to have a bottomless pit of money, I can't afford £600 phones. That doesn't mean I want to deal with the laggy pile of rubbish some of these low end phones can end up being. I have an Xperia Miro ST23i and if this range of phone is too far back for people to remember, it runs ICS and android 4.0.4.
I've been looking around to see if I could find any decent thread that provides the options available to those of us who have to work with something in the lower band. Many of the Kernels I have found are either reportedly unstable or don't quite do what many others do, which is understandable considering that these phones are less common.
But those of you who really know what you're doing and have had much more experience than myself, do you know of any good kernels for this range of xperia, that provides overclocking, underclocking and any of the other features that are commonly available to higher range phone kernels?
Sorry If I sound like a noob, or this is in the wrong place but I would love to be able to install a great kernel without spending hours trying to find something that I don't really know that it is..
Thank you!
