So i just got this phone. I was told it was rooted and running alliance rom but its not they took it back to stock i guess. I am wanting to put alliance rom on it. It is on 4.3 and its nc1. It has safestrap on it because super user is on it and when i go into the safestrap app and go to recovery it takes me to the safestrap recovery. I tried to install twrp and it said root was required so i check root with root checker and it says its not rooted. My goal is to have it rooted running alliance rom (or if y'all have any suggestions on roms lol feel free to suggest) and being running smooth. any information would be helpful. thanks! :good:

use safestrap to install alliance, Now that you are on 4.3 you can not use the normal version of twrp. You can install over the stock rom I wouldn't recommend it but I understand why people do.

I think its just the modules you need to flash (fixes wifi for locked phones). The modem flash is for people on a unlocked bootloader. If you have connectivity problems try to flash the modem file because alliance is based on ml1 and nobody is sure if the modem is different in the new update.

As long as you don't try to downgrade past 4.3 or try to unlock your bootloader your pretty safe. Any brick you encounter can easily be fixed by a ml1 or nc1 odin flash. If the modem doesn't work with alliance you wont brick by flashing the ml1 modem. seriously stay away from pre 4.3 odin files, bootloader unlock, and custom recovery's that are not safestrap its a headache to unbrick. Also be aware that you can only flash touch wiz 4.3 roms (no aosp).

So I have TWRP installed on my rooted Galaxy S3 (I535), and the 4.3 update just came out and was available to me.
I downloaded it, and tried to install it (I know that it will remove root), and when it finished downloading, it opened the TWRP boot menu.
Does anyone else who uses TWRP know how to install the new update? I couldn't find it and it wouldn't automatically install....

You kind of only have 2 options now. Attempt a "dirty" flash of a ROM so you can save your internal SD files then odin or do the full Odin wipe and forget about keeping the files. Either way unless anyone else has a idea you lose your current setup.

OK I'll explain what I think went bad.when you downloaded the update it was expecting factory stock recovery to finish the install. Since you had twrp it failed. FYI Odin is a program on the PC to communicate with the phone in download mode (Odin mode). try to do a factory reset before you go crazy with my other suggestions. I have a feeling one of the 3 options I gave you are your only options.

Yeah but you already soft bricked it. Any brick you do you should be able to fix. just so you know you backed yourself into a corner. No matter what you do you have a chance of bricking. Its all part of being a power user. If your uncomfortable with that after you are on 4.3 you might not want to root.

Yeah I know there's always the chance of bricking, just wanted to know if that specific thing would do it. I've been into rooting since my Droid 1, Droid 2, and Droid X. But I'm always cautious.
If I do a factory reset and back up all my data, will it get rid of odin and TWRP and everything? Then just install the 4.3 update and root using safe root? Would that work?

Factory reset deals with the rom. So no it will stay twrp.
---------- Post added at 05:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:40 PM ----------
Using Odin is a lot like SBF'ing on the droid x (that was my last phone also). So if you can remember installing cyanogen mod 6 or 7 you probably always did a factory reset before first boot. Custom recovery stays intact the only way to get rid of it was to flash stock recovery with terminal emulator or sbf back to pure stock. Luckily Odin let's us flash the recover by its self so we have more options with Samsung.
first off I want to thank the community for being so awesome, been on this site as a lurker for a long time.
anyway to the question. I'm running cleanrom currently but want to install the MOAR rom. I have TWRP installed, rooted, so on and so forth but I want to make sure I dont brick my device.
I know I need the ML1 modem but am not sure if I actually have that modem installed and or how to check.
Assuming I do indeed have ML1 do I need to relock bootloader first before I flash?
thanks alot.

Your question seems similar to the one I just had answered in my thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2611335
I checked baseband in Settings -> About Phone -> BaseBand Version.
I flashed it using the zip found in Invsiblek's link in his thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788313) -
Specifically:http://invisiblek.org/sch-i535/firmware/
And I don't see why'd you have to relock the bootloader before flashing the new modem. I just flashed and it worked. Didn't see much signal improvement, though no degradation either.

I tried using saferoot to root my SCH-I535 and it failed due to "kernel is patched". Is there another kernel I can flash? Or could someone send me a link to a viable option please? My kernel is 3.0.31 [email protected]#1. Build is JSS15j.1535VRUCNC1. MY baseband is I535VRUCNC1. Any help is sorely needed and greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Saferoot doesn't work on the latest OTA NC1. Plus, you cannot install any other kernels due to VZW locking the bootloaders. I have read (I have not tested) that you can ODIN back to ML1 if you want to root, but you cannot ODIN any other prior releases w/o bricking your phone.
Confirmed

Yes, if you take the new OTA (NC1) you cannot root it now with saferoot or any other current tool.
And yes, you can ODIN back to ML1 without issue and reoot using saferoot (I have done so.) Well, one issue: Your phone will be wiped clean and you must reinstall all your apps. ExtSD card should remain untouched.
Hopefully, new tools will be developed to allow rooting NC1, although the update is really minor and not needed for most people. The big question is whether once KitKat rolls out for the S3, will it be able to be rooted.

Rooting before install is easy. Its making one click root applications for post install that can be hard. One way or another KitKat will have root for us locked people.
4.3 Update and Root
I noticed I didn't have OTA Survival Mode checked in SuperSu when I took the OTA. So, after ODINing back to ML1, I thought I'd try again with the Mode checked. This time, I got the update and maintained root.
Question....

Only VRUCML1 can be rooted.
Odin flash the VRUCML1 tar file then use Saferoot to gain root access. The VRUCML1 tar file is here.
Here are steps on how to use Odin. It is a Windows only program. Only do the "4.3 with Odin" steps which are in red. This will wipe your entire phone (backup anything on your internal storage) and it will be set to out of the box, VRUCML1 factory settings.

Here is a copy of my pre-rooted backup of the firmware. Thanks to @ausdim for his twz kernel required to fix wifi on the T-Mobile M919 (already built into the backup).
Instructions:
1. Extract the I9505XXUHOB7_Stock_Rooted_Backup folder from the .rar and place that folder into your TWRP backups folder, i.e: ext-sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/xxxxxx (The name of your backups folder may vary. If a backups folder does not already exist you must first create a backup using TWRP's "Backup" function before proceeding).
2. From TWRP recovery perform an "Advanced Wipe" and wipe Dalvik, System, Data, and Cache.
3. From the Main Menu press "Restore" and restore the I9505XXUHOB7_Stock_Rooted_Backup .
4. Reboot. Done!

It's basically a modified TWRP recovery for those of us with NB1 and newer modems, as the OTA to that one effectively locked the bootloader, and no one has managed to crack it since then. It uses an exploit to allow for the flashing of ROMs but does not touch the kernel or boot image.
If the kernel for this ROM is available to ODIN, it may work.
I guess this is the kernel.

Unfortunately we cannot flash it unless we are still on old modems. Safestrap will not touch the kernel, and TWRP will not work on our phones due to the bootloader being locked. In order to change the kernel, we have to use ODIN, which uses a different file type (tar.md5).

It says Authorization fail, I'm guessing the tar file did not have the proper binary to pass the bootloader, since it's locked.
Thanks for trying man.

M919 was on 4.4.4. But I337M was on 4.3 bootloader I think.
So that's might be the reason I got succeed

for us with locked bootloaders im on the s4 active at&t the odin file must have Samsung signature and at&t if I remember right
This won't work on AT&T I337, only the I337M which is unlocked. Android 5.0 is not compatible with any of the kernels we can flash, and kernels packaged into tars only flash if you can sign the package, and the kernel also needs to be signed for the bootloader to accept it. No Safestrap users can use this. Anyone with a normal custom recovery can.
Ah! This is great, I've been waiting to confirmation that this works with the i337M. I wasn't willing to test this myself. Which ROM was most stable between the two? Have you noticed any issues other than mobile data? Which ROM suffered from mobile data issues?
Also, were these ROMs official releases? Or just leaks?
Thanks op. I tried this on my canadian i337m and it worked..now i have lollipop..just few isuues....my LTE doesnt work at all..i still get mobile network..but only 4g...other thing...my sd card gets unmounted by itself randomly... upgraded yesterday night..so still keeping an eye for other issues.. thanks

i managed to flash the TW 5.0.1 using Odin but, my wifi doesn't work anymore...
I was looking into the S5 OG5 root a while ago and I sold the device I had because there didn't seem to be a way to root it. I do have a rooted S4 and there was recently a new root method found for the 5.0.1 S4 rom that was released after the OG5 rom for the S5. The MobileGo website says it also supports the S5 so if anyone with OG5 unrooted wants to give this a try and let others know whether it works or not, I'm sure everyone would appreciate it. You guys are probably going to want to flash an older S5 kernel just like the S4 users flashed an older kernel before running the MobileGo program. What you can do for now is try running MobileGo using the kernel you have now. If you're lucky, it'll root. If not, you can read on:
So what I would do first is download the latest version of Odin: http://odindownloadxda.com/Odin3_v3.10.7.zip
Then you'd want to go to this thread for the Odin flashable stock kernels for older versions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...t/safestrap-odin-safestrap-flashable-t3161043
BEFORE YOU TRY THESE NEXT STEPS: I was unable to find the stock OG5 Odin flashable kernel in these forums. If someone could kindly extract it from the stock OG5 rom and post on here you can begin the next steps. Don't try this before you have the stock OG5 kernel on hand because the older kernels may not let your phone boot up into the rom and the only way to fix it is to either reflash the entire OG5 rom in Odin or to flash the OG5 kernel in Odin. I think you can make the kernel yourself if you have the stock OG5 Odin tar, just extract the boot.img and pack it into a tar.md5 using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2446269 Here is a stock OG5 odin flashable kernel I was able to create for you: https://mega.nz/#!SEhzyKaL!ymd4vJ2Jd6ytbZoBIPp4fYh6fCRz0tELRMNAYVmIrqU
Once you have the OG5 kernel as a backup, try flashing VZW_BOD5_RETAIL_KERNEL_ONLY.tar.md5 and run MobileGo, if that doesn't work move on to VZW_BOC4_RETAIL_KERNEL_ONLY.tar.md5 then trying the MobileGo and then if that fails try NI2_stock_kernel.tar.md5 since that's the 4.4 kernel that was rootable. However, there's a strong chance that your phone will refuse to boot into the Lollipop rom using a KitKat kernel. All you have to do is flash back the OG5 kernel in Odin 3.10. Once you go through the different kernels from OG5 -> OE1 -> OC4 -> NI2 and the MobileGo program fails to root on any of them, you'll know that this is not a viable root method for the S5.
I couldn't get MobileGo to connect to my phone on OG5. I flashed the OE1 kernel, connected to MobileGo, then used Mobilego's backup feature. After that I noticed that there's a notification reading SECURITY NOTICE Unauthorized actions have been detected. Restart the device to correct them. I tried the MobileGo root and after about 5 minutes it gave me a failure message. Then I tried to proceed to BOC4 but I kept getting failures from Odin. I cannot get back to OG5 kernel either. After a few tries, I now cannot even get into download mode.
The good news is my phone is working. What do I do now? Is this "tripping Knox?"
Pull the battery. Press the buttons for download mode. There should be no case in such you can't access download mode unless you hard bricked your phone which you didn't since the phone is working. Mobilego doesn't specify if their root method trips Knox. Probably should assume it does but if the root failed then it should've left Knox alone. After a clean battery pull try flashing the OG5 kernel back to your phone.

I can now get into download mode. If I try the older kernels I get a status bar that goes about 1cm then stops. If I try the kernel you gave me for OG5 ODIN says the binary is corrupt before even letting me flash it.

How do I extract that?

Hey, I might have created the flashable kernel incorrectly. Sorry, this is my first time creating flashable odin images. Try this one: https://mega.nz/#!SEhzyKaL!ymd4vJ2Jd6ytbZoBIPp4fYh6fCRz0tELRMNAYVmIrqU
You can try flashing that over your OG5 rom right now since it's the OG5 kernel and it won't change anything on your phone even if it does flash.

That guide is from before the OG5 update though. However, my basis for trying this is because it was able to root an S4 5.0.1 rom that was released well after the S5 OG5 rom was released. I was thinking that they would've implemented the same root-fixes into the S4 as the S5 so if the mobilego method worked on the patched S4 rom then it should have a good chance of working on the S5. I would test all this myself but I sold my brother's S5 a couple days ago.
I dont know if odin will let you flash an older kernel other that OE1 if it does just ignore this post if not you can try this , I put together a Heimdall package that may flash the kernel and let this method work.
Instructions:
1. Download and install Heimdall For S5
2. Put phone into download mode (power+volume down+home)
3. Navigate to extracted Heimdall folder and run heimdall-frontend.exe
4. Click on utilities tab and click detect
5. Click on Flash tab in the Under Options PIT click browse and choose s5.pit
6. Under Partion Files click add
7. Change the Partion Name to BOOT
8. Click Browse and choose boot.img
9. Click Start.
If you get driver errors follow below
10. In the Heimdall folder open the Drivers folder and click on zadig.exe
11. Under options click on List All Devices
12. Choose MSM8960
13. Choose Install or Reinstall Driver
14 Go Back to Step 4
15. If devices does reboot and start with older kernel ignore any security warnings and try the root method

Thanks for your input jrkruse! I read here http://mobile.tumblrvip.com/2015/09/23/successfully-downgrade-from-bog5-kernel-to-any-kernel-solved/ that Odin 3.10 should allow S5 users to downgrade OG5 to any older kernel supposedly.

Okay. Here's my assessment of the ODIN method.
OG5 on OG5 Kernel - MobileGo Cannot Root this
OG5 on OE1 Kernel - MobileGo Cannot Root This
OG5 on OC4 Kernel - MobileGo Cannot Root This
OG5 on NI2 Kernel - Bad idea. I was stuck in a boot loop for like an hour before I got back to Download mode to reflash the whole stock image.
You can flash any of these kernels from ODIN, and you can flash everything back to rescue yourself. If you leave one of the older kernels on your phone too long, it will soft brick. If somebody figures out a root method that works, ODIN will be able to help use move between Kernels. This has been a fun first foray into Android Hacking. I still hate my phone.
Thank you fates13 and jrkruse, you guys rock.

All those people complaining that their updated device can't be rooted, not willing to try this out?
Can confirm that the root does not work and that the NI2 kernel will not successfully boot lollipop. Root might be theoretically possible if NI2 could boot....any thoughts on how to get into lollipop with the NI2 kernel in place?

I have an unrooted VZW S5 with OG5 and would like to give it a shot, but download mode hasn't worked for me since OE1. Holding power+vol down+home just boots the device normally. I've tried holding them all the way through the boot, which causes the phone to repeatedly reboot. Am I missing something?
Edit: Nevermind, guess I was pressing power first. I've got download mode now. Will report back if I make any progress...
Verizon
This is unfortunate.
So we are back to square one?
But if I understand, MySonsDad confirmed we have no reason to not update to OK3 since we can jump between the locked kernels?
So no root for 5.0? I've got to start researching these things before I buy a phone.

Same here, I figured it would be a similar process as rooting my Nexus 5 when I was on AT&T. The Verizon and Samsung bloatware is painful when it can't be removed.
Is there no update on this? I'm willing to anything at this point.
