I tried using saferoot to root my SCH-I535 and it failed due to "kernel is patched". Is there another kernel I can flash? Or could someone send me a link to a viable option please? My kernel is 3.0.31 [email protected]#1. Build is JSS15j.1535VRUCNC1. MY baseband is I535VRUCNC1. Any help is sorely needed and greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Saferoot doesn't work on the latest OTA NC1. Plus, you cannot install any other kernels due to VZW locking the bootloaders. I have read (I have not tested) that you can ODIN back to ML1 if you want to root, but you cannot ODIN any other prior releases w/o bricking your phone.
Confirmed

Yes, if you take the new OTA (NC1) you cannot root it now with saferoot or any other current tool.
And yes, you can ODIN back to ML1 without issue and reoot using saferoot (I have done so.) Well, one issue: Your phone will be wiped clean and you must reinstall all your apps. ExtSD card should remain untouched.
Hopefully, new tools will be developed to allow rooting NC1, although the update is really minor and not needed for most people. The big question is whether once KitKat rolls out for the S3, will it be able to be rooted.

Rooting before install is easy. Its making one click root applications for post install that can be hard. One way or another KitKat will have root for us locked people.
4.3 Update and Root
I noticed I didn't have OTA Survival Mode checked in SuperSu when I took the OTA. So, after ODINing back to ML1, I thought I'd try again with the Mode checked. This time, I got the update and maintained root.
Question....

Only VRUCML1 can be rooted.
Odin flash the VRUCML1 tar file then use Saferoot to gain root access. The VRUCML1 tar file is here.
Here are steps on how to use Odin. It is a Windows only program. Only do the "4.3 with Odin" steps which are in red. This will wipe your entire phone (backup anything on your internal storage) and it will be set to out of the box, VRUCML1 factory settings.

This is a root injected Stock I535 (leaked) Odin Flashable Image. You flash this in Odin just as you would the completely stock ROM from samsung. I've simply injected the su binary and SuperSu app so you now have rooted stock image.
So if you want to keep your device stock yet have the functionality of root without tripping the counter or just flashing back to stock yet retaining root for a good baseline to move forward from, then this is a good option.
You can get ODIN here
and the drivers for the SCH-I535 so ODIN can detect your phone can be found at Samsung's site. Click on the Manuals & Downloads tab at the bottom and then on Software for the latest driver.
Instructions:
First, Download Image:
JB Image (4.1.2) Provided by open1your1eyes0 leak
Main Download: No Wipe, latest 4.1.2 Image: root66_VZW_I535VRBMB1.7z
Prior Version:
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBMA2.7z - This will wipe everything! Complete factory wipe. Caution, Includes /sdcard.
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBMA2_nowipe.7z - This will NOT wipe data or sdcard.
JB Image (4.1.1)
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBLK3.7z - This will wipe everything! Complete factory wipe. Caution, Includes /sdcard.
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBLK3_nowipe.7z - This will NOT wipe data or sdcard.
Older Leaked JB Image
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBLK1.7z - This will wipe everything! Complete factory wipe. Caution, Includes /sdcard.
Mirror 2: root66_VZW_I535VRBLK1.7z - This will wipe everything! Complete factory wipe. Caution, Includes /sdcard.
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBLK1_nowipe.7z - This will NOT wipe data or sdcard.
Mirror 2: root66_VZW_I535VRBLK1_nowipe.7z - This will NOT wipe data or sdcard.
Archived Images
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBLJ1.7z - This will wipe everything! Complete factory wipe. Caution, Includes /sdcard.
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBLJ1_nowipe.7z - This will NOT wipe data or sdcard.
Second, Extract and Flash:
Extract the root66_VZW_I535VRBLK1.tar.md5 from the .7z file you downloaded.
Use Odin, put phone into download mode [with phone off, hold vol. down + home + power ], connect to computer and open Odin.
once in odin click the PDA field and select the root66_VZW_I535VRBLK1.tar.md5 you downloaded.
Leave Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checked.
click start and
when done let phone reboot.
If you have issues flashing with Odin please ensure you are using the microusb cable that came with the phone, users have had issues using other cables.
If you just want a stock, rooted phone with no custom recovery, no plans to flash custom roms, etc. then you can stop HERE.
Optional, Recovery (may now trip counter):
Loading any custom recovery or custom kernel may now trip the download mode flash counter. Loading a non stock recovery will also prevent you from successfully applying any OTA updates however here is a procedure for any who want a non-stock recovery:
The instructions here are for TWRP but you can follow same procedure for CWM as well.
Option 1: Download GooManager from the Play store. Once installed click the menu and select "Install OpenRecovery Script".
Option 2: Download the TWRP recovery image here. Copy it to the /sdcard of your phone.
Connect your phone to your computer and use adb
type adb shell
once in the shell run su
then
dd if=/sdcard/openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-d2vzw.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
Alternate if unfamiliar with adb commands
Grab android terminal emulator from the play store and run the same commands starting with su and then the dd command.
Bonus Files
CWM Flashable OTA Upgrade (preserves root and non-stock recovery):
---------------:: root66_OTA_I535_VRBLK3_VRBMB1.zip
CWM Flashable Modems: modem_CWM_I535VRBLK3.zip || modem_CWM_I535VRBMA2.zip
ODIN Flashable Stock Recovery: VZW_recovery_I535VRBLK3.tar.md5 || VZW_recovery_I535VRBMA2.tar.md5
History:
I've injected root into other stock images and those threads have a lot of valuable information which could answer some questions that may arise here. If you have time to do some reading here are a few of the informative ones:
Samsung Galaxy S3 [ATT / Bell / Telus / Rogers / Sasktel ]
Samsung Galaxy S3 [TMO / Wind / Mobilicity]
Also did sprint but there isn't much there that won't be covered above.
FAQ
Does this remove the VZW bloatware?
A: No. It is same as stock, nothing is removed.
Does this use an unlocked boot.img
A: No. This flashes the stock boot.img in the VRBLJ1 image.
Can I still get OTA updates?
A: Yes if you do not load a custom recovery or remove any system apps OTA updates will still come and be able to be successfully applied. If you want to retain root through the OTA process I'd recommend using OTA Rootkeeper.
Awsome! Thanks for this!!
I'd like to add I don't have a VZW S3 so I didn't test those images above. The first person to try please post to confirm they work. Thanks.
EDIT: Anyone reading this, it's been confirmed they work now.

Yes. In the faq question 2.

Still no power due to Sandy, but has anytime tried this and confirmed it works? I'm on the current official ota with root and no custom recovery now.

No one tried this yet? Not many people looking only for stock/rooted lb
I installed open1your1eyes0 prior to seeing this or I would have tried it. I can confirm your flash counter will be tripped using that method. Had I seen this first I certainly would have used it as all I want is stock rooted.
Thanks for thinking of us conservative types that only want stock rooted.

I hope at this point most people have their phone how they want it. To me, this is good for 2 things. 1, first get your phone and want completely stock but root. 2, you've played around with other roms, kernels, etc and want to get back to a good baseline ensuring all stock but of course retaining root.

Well there have been 30 downloads. maybe someone has tried it at this point. (some people never post) but I'm sure we'll know soon enough.
I rooted my phone via one of the original methods (Odin file) when it first came out. When I put, the first screen says "custom". I don't think that original method tripped the flash counter.
After installing this via Odin, will I still get the "custom" message on boot?
Foxfi no longer works on jb, right?

the custom screen means your bootloader is locked. No the original method does not trip the flash counter. You basically use this file just like you did way back with VRALF2 root66 that mr. robinson was so kind to provide us with.

I went back to stock (nandroid) on my Verizon S3 and did the JB update but ROM Manager doesn't work and I can't flash Clockwordmod. I am not very knowledgeable on this. Did I lose root? It still seems unlocked. Do I need to re-root? Are instructions to do this under the new JB update somewhere?

Anytime you flash to stock, you will lose root. You will need to root before you do anything else. You can either flash clockwork mod through odin and then root the sd zip file, or you can follow the root method with your PC through your USB.

I actually did the steps on that page before I posted here but I kept getting a failure message in ODIN. Maybe it has something to do with Windows 8? Also very possible I'm not doing something right. I'll have to keep working on it I guess.
Thanks for the info though!
I have searched for the answer to this question with no avail. I need to return my S3 back to stock. I have been running clean rom 7 on it with TWRP recovery. As I understand it, I need to use ODIN and flash the image file to my phone. Does it matter which image I flash back? If I flash the latest image, will that prevent the bootloader from being unlocked or take away the ability to flash a custom recovery? I ask this question because I know with the GS4 (VZW) updating past MDK will lock your bootloader permanently. I do not want that to happen!
Also, why are people asking for bootchains for images?
Thanks in advance!

You can flash the latest MF1 with no problems. The boot chains are no longer needed if use Casual to unlock, root and recovery. All this will change when 4.3 is released. Do not take the update or could be locked out forever since can no longer downgrade. Wait for mods to fix 4.3 update. That being said here are links to MF1 image and Casual. Remove the MF1 tar file from zip and Odin it in PDA. Use Odin 3.0.7. Don't need the other file in zip.

I just used those files to restore and reroot a few minutes ago and no problems.
So i just got this phone. I was told it was rooted and running alliance rom but its not they took it back to stock i guess. I am wanting to put alliance rom on it. It is on 4.3 and its nc1. It has safestrap on it because super user is on it and when i go into the safestrap app and go to recovery it takes me to the safestrap recovery. I tried to install twrp and it said root was required so i check root with root checker and it says its not rooted. My goal is to have it rooted running alliance rom (or if y'all have any suggestions on roms lol feel free to suggest) and being running smooth. any information would be helpful. thanks! :good:

I think its just the modules you need to flash (fixes wifi for locked phones). The modem flash is for people on a unlocked bootloader. If you have connectivity problems try to flash the modem file because alliance is based on ml1 and nobody is sure if the modem is different in the new update.

As long as you don't try to downgrade past 4.3 or try to unlock your bootloader your pretty safe. Any brick you encounter can easily be fixed by a ml1 or nc1 odin flash. If the modem doesn't work with alliance you wont brick by flashing the ml1 modem. seriously stay away from pre 4.3 odin files, bootloader unlock, and custom recovery's that are not safestrap its a headache to unbrick. Also be aware that you can only flash touch wiz 4.3 roms (no aosp).

So I saw here that the NE5 update was out, and I want to install it. However, obviously I can't do an OTA update due to it being a "modified device." I am running Philz Recovery and root from flashing SuperSU.zip.
Is there any way to update manually, without losing root (permanently), recovery, or wiping all my data? I know that I could always restore the stock recovery and firmware via ODIN, but that would get rid of everything, including my data.
(Side question: What exactly does the NE5 update add? I know it's another build of 4.4.2 but what features?)
Thanks.
SOLVED: Just went the long route with wiping and installing the updated NE5 firmware via ODIN. Flashed Philz recovery and SuperSU.
Admins/Mods feel free to delete.

The NE5 file is already deodexed and rooted. Therefore, you don't lose root. You get Wi-Fi calling feature with this updated. And, I believe it's an update to the modem.

Remember: You will lose all data. So it's better if you do a backup of your data using Titanium or alike to get the data back.
