This is a root injected Stock I535 (leaked) Odin Flashable Image. You flash this in Odin just as you would the completely stock ROM from samsung. I've simply injected the su binary and SuperSu app so you now have rooted stock image.
So if you want to keep your device stock yet have the functionality of root without tripping the counter or just flashing back to stock yet retaining root for a good baseline to move forward from, then this is a good option.
You can get ODIN here
and the drivers for the SCH-I535 so ODIN can detect your phone can be found at Samsung's site. Click on the Manuals & Downloads tab at the bottom and then on Software for the latest driver.
Instructions:
First, Download Image:
JB Image (4.1.2) Provided by open1your1eyes0 leak
Main Download: No Wipe, latest 4.1.2 Image: root66_VZW_I535VRBMB1.7z
Prior Version:
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBMA2.7z - This will wipe everything! Complete factory wipe. Caution, Includes /sdcard.
Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBMA2_nowipe.7z - This will NOT wipe data or sdcard.
JB Image (4.1.1)

Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBLK3_nowipe.7z - This will NOT wipe data or sdcard.

Mirror 2: root66_VZW_I535VRBLK1.7z - This will wipe everything! Complete factory wipe. Caution, Includes /sdcard.

Mirror 1: root66_VZW_I535VRBLJ1_nowipe.7z - This will NOT wipe data or sdcard.
Second, Extract and Flash:
Extract the root66_VZW_I535VRBLK1.tar.md5 from the .7z file you downloaded.
Use Odin, put phone into download mode [with phone off, hold vol. down + home + power ], connect to computer and open Odin.
once in odin click the PDA field and select the root66_VZW_I535VRBLK1.tar.md5 you downloaded.
Leave Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checked.
click start and
when done let phone reboot.
If you have issues flashing with Odin please ensure you are using the microusb cable that came with the phone, users have had issues using other cables.
If you just want a stock, rooted phone with no custom recovery, no plans to flash custom roms, etc. then you can stop HERE.
Optional, Recovery (may now trip counter):
Loading any custom recovery or custom kernel may now trip the download mode flash counter. Loading a non stock recovery will also prevent you from successfully applying any OTA updates however here is a procedure for any who want a non-stock recovery:
The instructions here are for TWRP but you can follow same procedure for CWM as well.
Option 1: Download GooManager from the Play store. Once installed click the menu and select "Install OpenRecovery Script".
Option 2: Download the TWRP recovery image here. Copy it to the /sdcard of your phone.
Connect your phone to your computer and use adb
type adb shell
once in the shell run su
then
dd if=/sdcard/openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-d2vzw.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
Alternate if unfamiliar with adb commands
Grab android terminal emulator from the play store and run the same commands starting with su and then the dd command.
Bonus Files
CWM Flashable OTA Upgrade (preserves root and non-stock recovery):
---------------:: root66_OTA_I535_VRBLK3_VRBMB1.zip
CWM Flashable Modems: modem_CWM_I535VRBLK3.zip || modem_CWM_I535VRBMA2.zip
ODIN Flashable Stock Recovery: VZW_recovery_I535VRBLK3.tar.md5 || VZW_recovery_I535VRBMA2.tar.md5
History:
I've injected root into other stock images and those threads have a lot of valuable information which could answer some questions that may arise here. If you have time to do some reading here are a few of the informative ones:
Samsung Galaxy S3 [ATT / Bell / Telus / Rogers / Sasktel ]
Samsung Galaxy S3 [TMO / Wind / Mobilicity]
Also did sprint but there isn't much there that won't be covered above.
FAQ
Does this remove the VZW bloatware?
A: No. It is same as stock, nothing is removed.
Does this use an unlocked boot.img
A: No. This flashes the stock boot.img in the VRBLJ1 image.
Can I still get OTA updates?
A: Yes if you do not load a custom recovery or remove any system apps OTA updates will still come and be able to be successfully applied. If you want to retain root through the OTA process I'd recommend using OTA Rootkeeper.
Awsome! Thanks for this!!
I'd like to add I don't have a VZW S3 so I didn't test those images above. The first person to try please post to confirm they work. Thanks.
EDIT: Anyone reading this, it's been confirmed they work now.

Yes. In the faq question 2.
This appears to be exactly what I'm looking for (stock/rooted).
Still no power due to Sandy, but has anytime tried this and confirmed it works? I'm on the current official ota with root and no custom recovery now.

No one tried this yet? Not many people looking only for stock/rooted lb
I installed open1your1eyes0 prior to seeing this or I would have tried it. I can confirm your flash counter will be tripped using that method. Had I seen this first I certainly would have used it as all I want is stock rooted.
Thanks for thinking of us conservative types that only want stock rooted.

I hope at this point most people have their phone how they want it. To me, this is good for 2 things. 1, first get your phone and want completely stock but root. 2, you've played around with other roms, kernels, etc and want to get back to a good baseline ensuring all stock but of course retaining root.

Well there have been 30 downloads. maybe someone has tried it at this point. (some people never post) but I'm sure we'll know soon enough.
I rooted my phone via one of the original methods (Odin file) when it first came out. When I put, the first screen says "custom". I don't think that original method tripped the flash counter.
After installing this via Odin, will I still get the "custom" message on boot?
Foxfi no longer works on jb, right?
Worked like a charm!! unlocked with ez unlock and flashed cwm 6.0.1 with ez recovery...no tripped flash counter

I misread. Thought he said flash with cwm.
Anyhow, I'm not doing custom roms, so I'm stopping after Odin. Still interested to the questions I had a couple posts up.

the custom screen means your bootloader is locked. No the original method does not trip the flash counter. You basically use this file just like you did way back with VRALF2 root66 that mr. robinson was so kind to provide us with.

I went back to stock (nandroid) on my Verizon S3 and did the JB update but ROM Manager doesn't work and I can't flash Clockwordmod. I am not very knowledgeable on this. Did I lose root? It still seems unlocked. Do I need to re-root? Are instructions to do this under the new JB update somewhere?
Thanks for your help!

Anytime you flash to stock, you will lose root. You will need to root before you do anything else. You can either flash clockwork mod through odin and then root the sd zip file, or you can follow the root method with your PC through your USB.

I actually did the steps on that page before I posted here but I kept getting a failure message in ODIN. Maybe it has something to do with Windows 8? Also very possible I'm not doing something right. I'll have to keep working on it I guess.
Thanks for the info though!
Hey all, now with the recent 4.3 update that locked the bootloader, i'm afraid of accidentally updating if i ever have to odin. So i have (ics build) VRALF2 MD5, and a VRALEC.bootchain MD5 files. If i use them to odin back to stock, i would be on an ics build, and i would have to update to at least 4.1 to use the casual root method, but if i do update, i will jump to 4.3 and then get a locked bootloader. Where can i find the jellybean versions to odin with, that can get me out of a soft brick? Thanks

Are you already took the OTA update? meaning you're running 4.3 right now? if you do, you can't flash anything else except for stock 4.3 rom and with the option to root your 4.3 (you can not flash back to the older version or any custom rom/kernel) .On 4.3 the bootloader is locked and nothing you can do for now. There's safestrap method to get around the locked bootloader but I don't recommend it for now.
I never took the update, i rooted 4.1.2 and put cm10 on it, and cm11 now. Im just afraid if i ever have to odin i will have to dig deep to find a root method for the old ics build and im not sure if the latest cwm will even work with it. Either way, it just seems like a lot of work, when i could just odin back to jellybean, root, and rom. Thanks for the speedy reply

You can just flash a pre-rooted stock 4.1.2 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2178482
The link seems to be dead. I also have a bootchain file, which sounds like its needed for coming out of a soft brick according to this link It didnt seem like that download would of included that. However, im not sure if it is required.

Link is still good, you can directly download from here http://d-h.st/C2e
I'm sorry for the confusion, i'm not bricked right now, but if i ever am in the future, or something else, i want to be able to odin to a rootable version of touchwiz. OK, got it here is stock full firmware 4.1.2 http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23134718111254196 just unzip then use Odin to flash back to stock. After that you have to root and unlock bootloader...
Thanks for the link. The zip contains a file called "KIES_HOME_I535VRBMF1_1152558_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.md5" This can be flashed with odin through the pda slot? Sorry for bombarding you with questions, but i want to be confident i have a working solution if i ever need it. The link for unbricking shows to flash the root.66.TAR though the PDA slot, so i just want to make sure. It also says that the bootchains arent required. Also, is it fine that its a .md5 file? Thanks a ton, you have been so helpful.

Yes, just open Odin and pick PDA and browse to this file "KIES_HOME_I535VRBMF1_1152558_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.md5" the flash. This is 4.1.2 full factory firmware come with (bootloader,recovery,kernel,rom,radio..everything). Root66 is ICS 4.0 rom modded factory file and not include radio or recovery. In theory to recover you should use a full factory file.(KIES_HOME_I535VRBMF1_1152558_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.md5)
Thanks so much for all your help! Hopefully i wont need to do a odin restore, but if i do, now i'm prepared. Also, this thread could help someone in the future, which is nice. Again, thanks for all your help

I tried using saferoot to root my SCH-I535 and it failed due to "kernel is patched". Is there another kernel I can flash? Or could someone send me a link to a viable option please? My kernel is 3.0.31 [email protected]#1. Build is JSS15j.1535VRUCNC1. MY baseband is I535VRUCNC1. Any help is sorely needed and greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Saferoot doesn't work on the latest OTA NC1. Plus, you cannot install any other kernels due to VZW locking the bootloaders. I have read (I have not tested) that you can ODIN back to ML1 if you want to root, but you cannot ODIN any other prior releases w/o bricking your phone.
Confirmed

Yes, if you take the new OTA (NC1) you cannot root it now with saferoot or any other current tool.
And yes, you can ODIN back to ML1 without issue and reoot using saferoot (I have done so.) Well, one issue: Your phone will be wiped clean and you must reinstall all your apps. ExtSD card should remain untouched.
Hopefully, new tools will be developed to allow rooting NC1, although the update is really minor and not needed for most people. The big question is whether once KitKat rolls out for the S3, will it be able to be rooted.

Rooting before install is easy. Its making one click root applications for post install that can be hard. One way or another KitKat will have root for us locked people.
4.3 Update and Root
I noticed I didn't have OTA Survival Mode checked in SuperSu when I took the OTA. So, after ODINing back to ML1, I thought I'd try again with the Mode checked. This time, I got the update and maintained root.
Question....

Only VRUCML1 can be rooted.
Odin flash the VRUCML1 tar file then use Saferoot to gain root access. The VRUCML1 tar file is here.
Here are steps on how to use Odin. It is a Windows only program. Only do the "4.3 with Odin" steps which are in red. This will wipe your entire phone (backup anything on your internal storage) and it will be set to out of the box, VRUCML1 factory settings.

THREAD CLOSED
It has been believed that it is impossible to downgrade 4.3 to 4.1 because of knox or something which i don't know about
But this tutorial will help you downgrade without sending your phone to some website which will run you about 50$
Anyways lets start
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR BELOVED PHONE SO DON'T BLAME ME
ALL LINKS ARE BELOW
★Pre-Requisites★
1. A verizon Galaxy S3 (duh )
2. Odin (any version)
3. 4.1.2 update MB1
4. 4.3 update ML1 ( I guess other 4.3 builds work. Please test and report)
6. Cygwin
5. A functioning brain
★Downgrading★
1. Download both 4.1.2 and 4.3 updates (MB1 and ML1 respectively)
2. Create a folder called ModedRom
3. Open the 4.3 update using Winzip
4. Extract a file called "NON-HLOS" and place it in the folder you just created
5. Open the 4.1.2 update using Winzip
6. Extract all files except "NON-HLOS" and "aboot.mbn" and place them in the folder you've created earlier
7. Download and install Cygwin
8. Go to Computer > C: > Cygwin folder > home > and create a folder and name it like your profile (When you log into windows)
9. Place all the files in the "ModedRom" folder there
10. Open cygwin.bat (In cygwin folder in C: drive)
11. Type in the following commands and wait for the "$" sign after each command
First:
tar -H ustar -c boot.img cache.img.ext4 NON-HLOS.bin recovery.img rpm.mbn sbl2.mbn sbl3.mbn system.img.ext4 tz.mbn > S3ModedRom.tar
Second:
md5sum -t S3ModedRom.tar >> S3ModedRom.tar
Third:
mv S3ModedRom.tar S3ModedRom.tar.md5
Click to collapse
12. Now there Should be a MD5 file created in the folder where you placed all the files in
13. Connect your device and flash the MD5 file created using Odin
★You have just downgraded to 4.1.2★
★Unlocking Bootloader , Root and Recovery★
1. Download Casual flashing program
2. Enable USB debugging
3. Root Your phone with the root option
4. Flash the insecure bootloader (This unlocks the bootloader)
5. Flash custom recovery of your choice

can this be used to unlock already locked bootloaders?
I have NE1 and would be interested in this as would everybody else...
i do miss using my s3, itd be nice to get it unlocked (on NE1 as well). guess theres still a tiny shred of hope if 4.3 is finally able to get unlocked, nice to see someones still fighting the good fight.

But I don't know about MC1 as i had ML1
But It should work since NC1 is just an incremental update

I'll have to try this sometime soon this weekend would love to have a unlocked s3 again old s3 died a year ago thankfully Verizon replaced it but hope it works thanks for the post
downloading tonight and will try this at work tomorrow..
IF this successfully works from a NE1 standpoint I will
NOT hesitate to buy a week's worth of beer or lunch!
I am pretty sure a qfuse was tripped, which leaves you stuck on NE1. Some pieces can be changed, but by large, it will be NE1

I am pretty sure a qfuse was tripped, which leaves you stuck on NE1. Some pieces can be changed, but by large, it will be NE1

last i knew, once you were on NE1 you were screwed. you cant flash anything 4.3 not even in safestrap cause of the whole kernel thing.

Yeah, that resulted in a soft brick. I already tried this on a friends phone
Why MB1?
MF1 was the newest safe firmware.
any confirmation on this?
You cannot downgrade from NE1. again, a qfuse was tripped, and flashing the wrong thing will brick it.
A while back I had to send my phone in to Samsung for repair. When I got it back, I was crushed that it came back with a new, locked bootloader and 4.3 ML1 firmware This allowed me to jump back to 4.1.2 and unlock the bootloader.. AWESOME.
I've been trying this method since last night. I start with the ML1 installed. I do all the necessary steps to make the new tarball. I use Odin to flash the new file and when it reboots it gets stuck on the Verizon splash image (the one directly before it gets to the lockscreen) but goes no further. I shall keep trying, redoing the process. Ill post back if i get anywhere with it or if i find out i am dumb.
Is there any way to go from 4.4.2 to 4.1? I feel like I might be screwed.
