[Q] Inspire 4G Root with no Service Provider - HTC Inspire 4G

Hi All,
New here to the forums.
I primarily use iphone 5 (because my work provided phone and pays for service) but recently I broke out my HTC Inspire 4g to mess around with.
My Primary reason for using the HTC is to take advantage of certain application promotions on Google Play and Amazon Apps, and also because I would like to have a second, personal phone in which is not associated or tied to work. Preferrably on the Android platform.
My n00b Questions are this -
1) I disconnected service from Att a while back and don't plan on getting service at least for another 2-3 months - so as of now I have been using wi-fi to run all applications. Can I root my phone without mobile service and usuing wi-fi only? I did a factory reset, force upgraded to Android 2.3.5 and installed apps I use - and so far everythign seems to be running fine. My main issue is with the processing speed. This is more or less the main reason I want to root - so I can overclock.
2) If answer to question 1 is yes - can you please point me in the right direction for the most recommended root?
Thanks so much in advance.
Cheers!

Can you flash custom ROM's onto phones no longer in service?

Hey there, I have a Motorola Droid X that I used to use whilst on Verizon. I'm no longer with them and thus the phone is disconnected (no data). My question is, can I flash ROM's to the phone still (for testing purposes, I wanted to try 2.3) and have it activate?
I'm worried that no data means the phone won't activate on first bootup.. I have WiFi access but I'm unsure if the phone can use WiFi in that stage.
Thanks!
It will work no problem. It will use wifi to log in.

If you don't have service, then the phone won't activate anyway.

Stuck Data

Has anyone experienced the stuck data issue on this phone where when you are using the net, all of the sudden one of the 4g arrows get stuck and you can't access anything on the net? I had to go in the settings and turn off data as well as the radio and then turn it back on to bring the data back. I just got this phone today from walmart. Should this phone be exchanged? Thx
Update : was browsing xda and all of a sudden data went completely away, meaning the 4g icon. It came back in like 5 seconds. I don't know what's going on. Reminds me of my hd2 on ppp android, you know the familiar data drops we all experienced on ppp. Any one having the same issue?

I've been having data drops too

This is really strange, I mean this is a brand new phone fully optimized for android, not a hd2 that never had the most optimized drivers needed for android.

Does yours just drop and come back by itself or have you had to also turn the radio and/or data off? I've had both.

Mine is doing the same thing but its nothing new as my mt4g does the same thing. Dissapointed .... I thought the mt4g did it because it had a diff Rom.

I think I know it since I know Android. Had it even worse on my Flyer yesterday - no net via 3G or Wifi though it showed signal. On my Sensation less than on Flyer and former Desire. Is it Android related?
I have had all kinds of data problems. I have been at home with it all weekend, I just assumed it was from the low signal strength in my house. I have been using wifi around the house just fine on it. My Sammy Vibrant did not have data problems at home.
Is rather have no signal than own a Samsung android phone. Lol.

I have had this problem for the past year (seriously) and I have yet to find a solution. The issue has spanned 3 different phones (Nexus One, MT4G, Sensation) and 2 different SIM cards. It was so bad last June I basically had no data whatsoever for 2 weeks. Even my girlfriend has had the issue across her MT3G Slide and my Nexus One when I moved onto the MT4G so I know it isnt a weird bug with my account. She is on a completely different account.
I live in the Phoenix metro area, and at that time they were installing HSPA+ so I attributed the problems to that. I called T-Mobile several times complaining and they transferred me to a special dept and had the towers near me investigated and they never found anything. Since I lived in the DC metro area before moving here a year ago, they thought that may be the problem and reset a bunch of stuff for my phone # and SIM card but that didnt do anything either. After about 2 months of dealing with T-Mobile, the problem improved a lot and was just an annoyance instead of a deal breaker as it previously was.
Ever since then, the problem still occurs, albeit less often, but still enough to annoy me.
Unfortunately I think this is either an android bug, HTC bug, or a T-Mobile problem.
I'm also having the same problem. Data on my hd2 was a lot more reliable. I even went to exchange for another sensation. Same problem occur.

I was experiencing this same issue, and I believe I have it fixed (at least in my case). First thing I did, was a full factory reset. Having been on WinMo 5-6.5, then transitioning to Android a year ago, the one thing that remained a constant after flashing new ROMs, was to do a factory reset. I've also read posts that indicate it is a good idea, as soon as you get a new phone, to open the box, insert the battery, then do a full factory reset.
I am not sure why this helps, but since doing that, I have only experienced this issue once. It also took care of a few other issues I was having (random FC's in the music app for example).
Another thing I did, that I think had the biggest effect, was to install JuiceDefender. When you boil it down, JuiceDefender essentially toggles your data connection On and Off many times throughout the day (it allows you to set up a whole host of triggers and controls, but I won't go into that) It is my belief that cycling the data connection on and off resets that connection, leading to a 'fresh start' if you will. After installing JuiceDefender, I have saved a ton of battery usage (my phone will last a day and half now, with pretty heavy usage), AND more importantly, I have not experienced the issue of my data randomly dropping.
I know there aren't any definitive answers in my post, but I hope this helps. YMMV obviously.
My Sensation and G2x both do this. My old G2 did this. I think it's just problems with "4G"

So from the looks of it, seems like tmobile has some 4g issues, because this spans multiple devices.

I'm still a noob at this so I've got one question. Is a full factory reset where you go to settings->privacy->factory data reset? (I've got an Optimus M, so the menus may be different.) I just want to make sure because I plan to do a reset, install Juice Defender, and put in an 8GB class 6 card before I start doing anything. Anything else I should do at the start?

I believe this achieve the same result, but to be sure, the way I did it on this device was to power the phone down completely, hold the Volume Down button, then press the power button... this will present you with a menu on a White screen. Select Factory Reset, then press the power button. This will begin the factory reset process.

Yes to all of these.
T-Mobile is having some measure of growing pains with their 4G service and has not acknowledged it completely. A few of us have discovered that switching handset make and models does not help, as it is a service issue. From this thread:

Hi, it's been a while since I posted in XDA but this issue has been a regular one with my T-mobile service, across multiple devices. I have searched far and wide for anyone else seeing this exact problem, and finally here you are. I hope this helps other users:
1) Purchased the original myTouch 3G; approx 1 year with zero connectivity issues. Loved it, exceptional for its time.
2) Purchased (upgrade) myTouch 3G Slide at launch. Following 3-5 months saw This issue with outgoing data, but no incoming response. 60/40 the internet would respond or not in any application (web, streaming, podcasts), it was a real crapshoot. Assumed the problem was isolated and performed a few master resets. Zero apps installed and continued to see the same issue. Decided it was either software or radio related and called T-mo for advice. They suggested a replacement unit after standard troubleshooting (re-seat SIM, master reset, check that you have substantial signal).
3) New MT3G Slide, same outcome. Called back. Finally received a reasonable suggestion: get a new (free) SIM from T-mo as the one I currently had was slightly older. Was sure this was the issue as the rep sounded very confident when I explained the situation. Received new SIM!
4) No change, issue persisted. Following day called T-mo and had a 'ticket' escalated to engineering dept. Was assured I would receive a call from eng. dept, but no such luck. Bothered by this whole mess and lacking in answers from T-mo, I sold the Slide and upgraded to the G2X.
5) The issue once again reared its head! If the stars were aligned and I did get In/Out data, it was 11KB/s (90kbps) tops. Ex: 5MB podcast would take 0.5-1.5 min (30-90 sec) to download prior to issue, now 10-15 min. This was with no apps installed, 4 bars of signal, 4G status icon, across multiple geographical locations, and fingers on both hands crossed. It was about this time I suspected that somehow T-mo's network was throttling my account. But, I had never used more than 1GB in a month, and they assured me I was not being throttled. A serious WTF was had
6) Realizing there were bigger problems in the world and finally at wit's end, I returned the G2X and am waiting patiently for my contract to expire in July, while using an old Nokia candybar in the meantime for calls and text only.
7) July: move to new carrier or stay with T-mo (if we can figure out what this issue is). 8 year customer, need internet on a smartphone though.

There are a few other posts/threads describing the same behaviour. You may see data going 'out', but no data 'in' (response) from the network, despite having full signal and '4G' status icon. Ideally there should be one T-mobile general thread for this, if it doesn't already exist.
Unfortunately it seems that every tmobile phone has this very annoying problem. The data is fast, just not that reliable. Must be a GSM thing because it doesnt happen on sprint and verizon phones i use. And its not a "4g" issue because all of the phones are on the same wcdma bands as thr "3g" ones, they simply have modems with increased throughput. I have had this problem since the G1
Help get the word out to T-mo

Yes, if you are already seeing the issue, it will likely persist across all phones for you. Exchanging/returning your handset will probably not mitigate it.
T-mobile reps are going to need a few descriptive keywords if you plan on calling in the problem. 'Slow internet', 'slow connection', 'slow phone' will not generate any flags in their system due to the sheer number of not so savvy callers reporting the same thing under non-ideal conditions (bad reception/area, out of service area, etc). Suggest something like 'non-responsive network', 'stuck data', or 'no incoming data' that will allow them to differentiate user error from network problem. Test it in different locations (with 3-4 bars of signal and '4G' icon in status bar) and use the Speedtest app to give them concrete numbers. 5-15 KB/s for example is a clear indication that something is amiss, as even 3G is much faster.
Edit: There are a few threads on T-mo's site describing the same thing.
Turning off the backup my settings under privacy seems to help (still an issue but better) on the store demo I have been playing with.
I notice the issue where websites will not even start to load and apps time out when connecting. The request appears to be sent from the phone but not getting a reply from the network.
My G2 does not have a problem in the same location.

Got data connection back by accident (maybe not)

I have search all thread/forums/questions and I didn't found anything similar. Some threads says cause is old SIM card, lemon phone batch and TMO network issue. Not sure where this will fit.
Just want to share this info, be gentle noob here, New TMO customer/new phone
I got my htc sensation few days ago and root it on Stock ROM then install a bunch of apps and freezed a couple apps(aka bloatware) using titanium backup pro. After 3 days I lost all data connection (gprs/2g/3g/4g) except WIFI of course.
Called TMO-US they said that they reset my network and we do a whole bunch of troubleshooting. Still no luck but when I Tried using my sim card on my old phone(HTC inspire) I got a FULL 4g/network signal. WHOA!!!!
I didnt give up because htc sensation is a beast! but after spending alot of hours searching for the fix , no luck... then I decided to let the phone go since Im still covered my the 30 day grace period. Upon looking for a different phone on TMO lineup can't find any phone that can beat the htc sensation. So I resort to getting the same phone replacement.
*****Trust me I've tried everything that this sita has to offer (radio/cipher boot, airplane mode, battery pull, config settings)****
Then this whole fiasco becomes interesting...
Got the instructions to "de brand" the phone. S-off and unroot.
Downloaded stock rom and install it. on first boot 4G icon popped up.. hmmm... tried to browse the net and download some apps on the market check
so I download htc software updates(using 4G), reroot the phone and restore my backup.
I assume the cause is somewhere along the line of
- installing stray apps and freezing bloatwares - (not sure which one- too many to know) or
- some rogue processes triggered the data connection lost or
- need to do htc update first before roorting or
- I just got a freak accident upon rooting.
Doesn't matter I got my data connection back. So far so good.....
HTC Sensation
Stock ROM, S-OFF, Rooted
i had a very very similar problem as yours.
before I was s-off/rooted it was running fine with 3g over in asia. zero problems with the stock rom. started reading on s-off for about a week and went into Insertcoin cos that seem like the most popular.
after rooting to insert coin, problems started ... i could hardly get any 3g network even though the icon showed there was data going in and out. flashed from IC 2.2.5 to 2.2.7 and thought it would work itself out, 2.2.7 to 2.3.0 didn't work as well. Gave up and jumped to ARHD and every thing worked
It looks like both Insertcoin and ARHD uses two different kernels/radios. IC works on TMOUS for majority of the users, so you might want to look at InsertCoin and try that out on your 4G set
This is getting more interesting.. .As Im planning to venture to try different roms.
I'll keep that in mind and yes indeed InsertCoin is more popular.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1105432
Any advantage using InsertCoin? Because for now Im happy with my set up HTC sense is a bit laggy but not all the time and speedtest says 6mb++ download : 3mb++ upload.
if you're with tmobile & the your data worked with another phone & not the Sensation, your IMEI was probably blacklisted if you don't have and "Android Approved" data plan according to tmobile.
When the phone first came out a lot of us were having that problem. Our data would work for a few days & then would stop completely. I was running the original Total Internet plan from back when the MDA was release & it shut off. Tmobile didn't remove the flag until I converted over to an android plan.
My guess is you're on an older data plan & they want you to switch to their throttled data plan
Thanks for the info Xnifex! I'll keep that in mind, Im not sure though what you mean by "Android Approved".
Since Im a new customer with a new phone(HTC sensation that came from them). Im positive its brand new not refurbished so I assume IMEI is good.
I lost the data 3 days after I rooted the phone with S-OFF and SuperCID and a few tweaks. but I got the data back when Im in the process of de-branding (unroot and S-ON)
Although I didn't reach the S-ON process because I got the data back after installing the stock ROM/RUU. So I reroot it again.
The only thing I can remember on TMO side is the tech rep told me that they reset my data connection not sure if that helps
So far no issues here
If you lose connection again, call tmobile and make sure that they have you on an android data plan. I had a winmo phone before my sensation and they have 2 different kinds of data plans. Not sure why. My data stopped working after a couple of days. I had to call support and have them switch it away from the winmo data to the android. They might have screwed it up when you signed up.
the android approved was in quotes because it's no different than any other plan, but it's the term they use to get those that were on older non-throttled plans to switch over.
If you're a new tmobile customer than I don't know what's wrong, but if you're an older one who had a data plan from an old blackberry, windows mobile, or other smartphone, they blacklisted your Sensation IMEI until you switched over. That's probably why you could get it to work on a previous phone, which wasn't blacklisted, & not the Sensation
HMMMM... Almost the same scenario as I suspect.
Thanks for all the inputs.
All I can remember on tmous side is they reset my connection and I forgot to mention on the earlier post that I have my att number ported into tmous, probably thats the cause.
But I assume its the phone because after all the things that tmous have done I waited a couple of days nothing happen.. the only way I get the data connection is instaliing the srock rom\RUU.
Its been 5 days now, I've install the same apps that I got before and freeze a few bloats.. Still got data connection. Happy camper here...

free data glitch?3g enabled from replacement phone

Hey Guys,
A few months back I got an rma for my old triumph for the gps problem virgin mobile sent me a new phone and to my surprise out of the bag it had 3g connectivity I was able to browse the web view Facebook and listen to Pandora I have no clue why or how this happened but I didn't ask questions and since i already switched to straight talk I had no real use for the triumph I just wanted to see if they sorted everything out (Pretty sure they didnt)
If i go to the about secion in the phone my number is actually 000-0000-3700 i tried making calls out and that didn't work only 3g works
any way does anyone know why or how this happend and would any one be interested in buying it since i have no real use for it any more I'd rather sell it to someone on one of the forums than Ebay or craigslist
you can contact me if you want at [email protected]
My triumph did that to my also when i first bought it! I did not have it activated but when i got it out of the box i was messing around with it trying to get google and all that set up and noticed that i was using 3g signal not WIFI! Pretty amazing. I still got it activated and it works exactly the same.

I've never activated my phone and the 3g still works like 6 months later
This is because access to the mobile data portion of a CDMA network consists of two login strings ([email protected]ricket.com) and two passwords (cricket) that authenticate the phone's identity to the provider's server (which is then governed by a few HEX DEC settings in the radio), not the MEID/ESN like the network communication portion of the network. It just came preconfigured to a Virgin (Sprint) test connection. Once you dial *22804, however, it changes your ppp config and your M.I.P. settings to authenticate using your account's credentials.

hmmm very interesting
this actually happened to me for a while. I had 3g for about 2 months without paying my phone, and the first 2 days i had free texts and minutes. I usually still get it once in a while. But i have been using an app for texting.

HOTSPOT/ANTENNA/BATTERY/ROM questions and ideas

Few questions,
Is it possible to buy the following items and use them as a mobile hotspot boosting device?
- http://www.verizonwireless.com/acce...ase-Affinity-Others__Also_Viewed-mls_acc40151
- http://www.verizonwireless.com/accessories/adapter-cable-for-usb-lte-modem/
- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NGLTZQ/?tag=lifehackeramzn-20&ascsubtag=
I am grandfathered on verizon's unlimited data still and I am constantly traveling around California. Specifically my room and other remote areas I visit for work I can pull down decent 3g and sometimes 1 bar of LTE.
((( I purchased this item almost a year ago and used the SIM card in my phone to gain 4G signal then I connected to the network via WiFi. Everything worked fine but it was bothersome to continuously switch out my SIM card between devices so frequently whenever I couldn't take the hotspot with me. Seeing as the present situation I am involved with needs the older setup I had before; convenience is welcome.
- http://www.bestbuy.com/site/verizon...spot/8939305.p?id=1218956066940&skuId=8939305 )))
So here I am trying to build a badass device and mount/carry in my bag while on the go.
Will the first parts I have listed above work? I am worried the boost in signal might not warrant the setup I have planned. Then again if it works as intended it could be extremely useful. Any incite is appreciated!
Furthermore, I have a software related question that could be an alternative solution to my problem.
-The ROM I am currently running is Gummy-M3.0-07-21-14-NIGHTLY-d2lte
-The Baseband version is I535VRUCML1.
Is there anyway this is interfering with my reception?
The Gummy ROM is currently on Android 4.4.4. Is there a newer firmware I can flash to update the baseband to receive better signal?
Again thank you for reading and I hope to hear good advice! :fingers-crossed:
