free data glitch?3g enabled from replacement phone - Motorola Triumph

Hey Guys,
A few months back I got an rma for my old triumph for the gps problem virgin mobile sent me a new phone and to my surprise out of the bag it had 3g connectivity I was able to browse the web view Facebook and listen to Pandora I have no clue why or how this happened but I didn't ask questions and since i already switched to straight talk I had no real use for the triumph I just wanted to see if they sorted everything out (Pretty sure they didnt)
If i go to the about secion in the phone my number is actually 000-0000-3700 i tried making calls out and that didn't work only 3g works
any way does anyone know why or how this happend and would any one be interested in buying it since i have no real use for it any more I'd rather sell it to someone on one of the forums than Ebay or craigslist
you can contact me if you want at [email protected]

My triumph did that to my also when i first bought it! I did not have it activated but when i got it out of the box i was messing around with it trying to get google and all that set up and noticed that i was using 3g signal not WIFI! Pretty amazing. I still got it activated and it works exactly the same.

I've never activated my phone and the 3g still works like 6 months later

This is because access to the mobile data portion of a CDMA network consists of two login strings ([email protected]ricket.com) and two passwords (cricket) that authenticate the phone's identity to the provider's server (which is then governed by a few HEX DEC settings in the radio), not the MEID/ESN like the network communication portion of the network. It just came preconfigured to a Virgin (Sprint) test connection. Once you dial *22804, however, it changes your ppp config and your M.I.P. settings to authenticate using your account's credentials.

hmmm very interesting

this actually happened to me for a while. I had 3g for about 2 months without paying my phone, and the first 2 days i had free texts and minutes. I usually still get it once in a while. But i have been using an app for texting.

thread needs closed.

[Q] mobile network disconnects and gets stuck "turning on"

Hello all, i have had my HTC sensation 4G (on Bell) for just over a month and a few days ago i started losing my connection to the network intermittently. Super annoying. Anyways i tried deleting some recent apps, figured that might be the issue but nope didnt help. It happened about 3 days in a row until i finally did a Factory Reset on the phone. It worked fine for a bit and then began stopping its connection to the network. Anyways super frustrating, i read some forums about tunring ciphering on and off, i tried that didnt work... needless to say im chapped.
Sorry for the length, but basically wondering if anyone knows how to fix this as its to late to return the phone and i have read through similiar forums on other phones
sorry to hear abt ur problem. i experienced the same thing but i think mine was triggered when i installed juice defender. it would turn off mobile data when the screen was off and when i went to use the phone, i didn't have a connection. i uninstalled the app and did a power cycle and that seemed to fix the problem after i went back into settings and checked the box to turn mobile data on.

This. The phone seems to have trouble (on the stock kernel at least) when switching data from wifi only to cell when cell is turned off. This happens to me when I use wifi calling. The solution I came up with was to connect to a wifi network then turn on mobile data in the quick settings manually. Works every time for me.
HTC really needs to fix this.
Under mobile network in wireless settings, enable always-on mobile data.
This somehow fix my connection whereby it hampers with JD app by not turning on when it needs to.
Thanks for the help guys. I did also recently install a "battery optimizer: in Droid Utilities or soemthing like that, although i did a factory reset. ill try and do a full battery cycle like you mentioned and see if that helps
so the phone worked fine on the weekend, and even friday and i thought it was cause i stopped using a non "htc" charger and got rid of Android Utilities. but now its Tuesday again and like clockwork at 1pm it just stops connecting, if i reset it i get network for a few minutes and then boom out again. Very frustrating mid work day to be without my phone for hours on end. Dont know what to do.
Are you using WiFi at the time it goes out?

No i havent been, not allowed to use private phones on the corporate wireless, but so far i havent found a problem with it switching between wi-fi and H+ while at home.
I have a feeling that Bell Canada may be updating the network or something in the area but they havent said anything both times i called and i asked. so who knows. Its just to much like clockwork for me to think it would be the phone, but who knows.
So i believe i have this figured. I talked to tech support once again yesterday and i point blank asked if it was network problems he said no (3rd person from bell to tell me this) then reccomended i get a sim card change if that didnt work he said send the phone in for repair.
So i went to the downtown bell store talked to the girl, explained why i needed to replace a brand new sim, and she told me that it was because Bell doesnt have towers downtown they share the Telus towers, however because of network bottleneck bell users get less priority and thus i cant use my phone... Not only is this unnacceptable for a phone company to not provide service DOWNTOWN in a major city but having denied it multiple times forcing me to troubleshoot for hours and spend almost an hour talking to bell representatives...
NOT HAPPY. Bell - 5 in my books, lucky my contract is up in a few months and i can switch to telus where i will be able to get signal downtown...

Simple mobile 4G on gingerbread update!

Hi for all of the Simple Mobile users. I ran into a difficulties trying to get 4G internet on my new LG G2x with gingerbread update. Per Simple mobile website, to make MMS and internet work all you have to do is create a new APN for Simple Mobile in apn settings (http://www.mysimplemobile.com/Support-Center-Phone-Programming.aspx#LG), move the green button to new APN, hit save, reboot your phone and you good to go. However it says there also that you CANNOT modify original T-mobile APN that is already created in the phone.
Now here is the problem with gingerbread update. After you rebooted your phone you can go ahead and use internet but right when you got your first page the green screen coming up with t-mobile customer service info and it says there that there is no connection with your phone, please call the number provided below. You might have luck actually getting on the first page but after that - nothing. What happens is after you start using internet your phone stop reading information from newly created APN and automatically switching back to the original default T-mobile APN. And it doen't matter if you reboot the phone or not, it will still make an automatic switch.
Now after discussing this issue here on the board, with great help from jboxer we came to a solution. Jboxer said nobody done this before so I figured why not try it and it actually worked.
All you need to do is root the phone using these tools:
1. Install Clockwordmod with NVFlash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
2. root it with this zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
I am a noob in flashing/rooting the phones but it took me only 20 min. to do this procedure. Right after I root the phone I went to menu - settings - wireless & networks - mobile network settings - access point names - hit on T-mobile APN and now you got the opportunity to modify it! The rest - do exactly what the simple mobile website tells you to do.
Hope this helps!

That is not how I said to fix it. Rooting the phone doesn't allow you to modify the default settings. In fact, rooting is not even necessary to do my fix. What I said to do is to flash my file that sets a new default APN for Simple Mobile. Here is the thread below. Sucks to be miquoted so badly.

lol. Well props for making a flashable fix (best method IMO)
I guess once rooted it allows the settings to stick? Others have had luck with APN managers from the market which backup and write custom APN entries which works.
So the problem is that the APN keeps defaulting to Tmobile and the solution is to somehow edit and Save the default Tmobile APN setting with information that pertains to Simple Mobile so that it sticks.
Glad its fixed either way.
another way to fix it is by going into lg hidden menu
dial 1809#*999#>KR Setting>Set KR Settings
this removes all of the apns including tmo's then u just put in the simple apn nd ur good to go

Rooting would not make a difference here. All rooting means is that apps can request superuser (root) permissions to make changes to the system, and the app that sets the apn never requests root access so rooting the phone would not do anything here. Simple Mobile users were always able to make a new apn (default apns can never be modified). The problem is when they reboot it goes back to TMO's settings. Have you tried rebooting yet. My fix sets a new default apn for Simple Mobile which can be set and stick throughout rebooting, etc.
Also, as stated in my other thread, my fix DOES NOT require root. It only requires that Clockworkmod Recovery be installed.
Dude,
I have been using SIMPLE MOBILE forever and not had the problem you are speaking of. Just follow the instructions on the SM website. Set up the new apn. When you reboot hold the volume button up while rebooting and you should be set. Could it be you aren't setting up the apn properly?
And on some of the ROMS you can edit the T-Mobile apn.

Speaking of Simple Mobile, do they allow using the Wifi hotspot feature on the G2x? I saw in the company's FAQ that tethering was not allowed on SM phones, but wasn't sure if that covered hotspotting as well.
I have a question for you guys, I just got an unlocked G2x to use on simple mobile that I haven't activated, On t-mobiles site it says it supports for 4G, but on simple mobiles site it says it's only approved for 3g data, my question is do I need to get the 3g $40 plan or $60 4g plan to get the most out of the data on this phone?
Do both plans give you the same volume of data (i.e., 500Mb, 1Gb, etc)? If so, go with the cheaper plan. The systems hardly ever let you get the full speed anyway. In Thailand I only get between 2 to 3Mbps usually and it is plenty fast.

I have ran into this problem. I recently obtained a G2X and SIMPLE Mobile SIM and account. I paid the $40 for the "3G" connection. However it seems that the speed is throttled to around 118kbps down. So I did some testing and found that forcing the phone to use "2G Only" allowed up to around 160kbps down. This is just insane! I have read where some people on SIMPLE Mobile 3G have been able to get around 1500-3000kbps but have no idea how they manage that. My Optimus V on Virgin Mobile's 3G averages around 600-1000kbps down. That is usable. The SIMPLE Mobile one is just crap. I hate to have to pay more for less, unless you count the unlimited talk in that, but I may be sticking with VM for a bit longer. Any ideas how I can get the speed up on the SM one without paying the $60/month?

I mainly use google voice for my text and such since I ported my number to GV and all. But I just tried sending a picture message to my other phone's actual number from my G2X without google voice and it sent, just took forever. As for sms though it has always worked. This is with my phone showing "4G".

Be sure not to pay the $12.99 for the SIM directly from SM. Go on amazon and buy one for about $1.99 or if you are a Prime member get the one I did for $2.49 w/ free 2-day shipping. Won't hurt to try with it being that cheap.

odd.. I just switched to the G2X and bought a new Sim card with 4g.
before I had an LG optimus T with the 3g and always got 3g speeds around 2000kbps
On the 4g with my G2X I get anywhere from 2000 to 5000kbps. The really odd thing is its either 4g or 2g. I'll be sitting at work and it will drop from 4g to 2g.. making me think "wtf happened to 3g"?
Another thing I noticed is the hand off between edge and 3g was much smoother. With the G2x It will often completely drop all connections, data and voice, then pop back up with the different speed.

Yeah SM is just stupid slow on "3G". I actually got faster speeds when I forced 2G only network. My wife's Samsung Gravity Smart also has the same speeds as my G2x. I am thinking of switching to the $30/month 5GB of 4G data w/ 100 minutes that T-Mobile offers just to try it out. I can use my GrooveIP to make/receive calls if need be.

Just be ready for super slow speeds if you don't pay for their "4G" package. I ran some back to back tests yesterday with my SIMPLE Mobile sim and a T-Mobile sim in my G2x.
SM "4G" 118kbps down/ 132kbps up
SM "2G" 159kbps down/ 131kbps up
TM "4G" #1 885kbps down/ 348kbps up
TM "2G" 207kbps down/ 133kbps up
TM "4G" #2 1505kbps down/ 524kbps up
all ran back to back. So even T-Mobile 2G is faster than SM 3G. lol

[Q] Custom Roms won't connect to ATT Microcell

Ok, so my situation is a bit complicated, so bear with me. I've got an ATT voice plan, with no data or text. I've got an unlocked/rooted SK4G. I'm currently running GOv3.3. I was working just fine on the ATT network, but the people in the office next to mine couldn't get ATT signal, so they setup this little ATT microcell thing. It's about the side of a router and I guess it's basically giving them access to ATT via VOIP. They add their phone numbers to the list and then they can get on. Somehow, this thing is running over the regular ATT signal that I WAS getting just fine in my office on the other side of the wall. Now, I can't connect to ATT's network while inside the building. He's tried to add me to his list, but I can't connect to his microcell either. It doesn't show up at all when I search for carriers. He said that when he added me to his list, it gave him some message about how my number isn't registered with the att network. I'm trying a couple of different modems now just in case it's a modem issue, but I have little hope of that working. Any thoughts?
Have you tried manually searching for available providers to see what shows up?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I guess I didn't explain clearly. It shows ATT when you search, but it won't register n the network. If I unplug that damned microcell thing they're using, then I can connect just fine.

Apn is access point name its pretty much the address and port that your phone uses to connect to your network. You can find the setting for this under network settings.
Your using a T-Mobile phone to run on att I'm surprised you get service at all. Even having the device unlocked you still need to set up the apn which by default would be all tmobile. Definetly Google it because I do not know att apn settings I've always used T-Mobile. Hope my brief summary was at least a little help

This is actually a REALLY common thing to do. As long as you're using a GSM phone, it doesn't matter what provider it was originally used on, you can use it on another GSM network. This is my 3rd such phone (from t-mobile to ATT) and I've never had any problem getting them to work on ATT. And this phone still works just fine on ATT also...as long as I'm not within range of that damned microcell thing they're using in the office on the other side of this wall. As soon as I step outside, I connect back up to the normal ATT network.

[Q] 3G and 4G ridiculously slow

Hi all
I recently got a new Nexus 5 (my old one decided to have a swim in the sea and is now in the shop for repair).
The issue I have with the new one (4.4.4 stock, rooted) is that 3G and 4G are extremely slow. Speedtest shows varying ping numbers (I have seen from 35ms to 2500ms), download is ridiculous (0.05mbit) and upload is quite good, surprisingly - around 5mbit.
I am in Greece and using Cosmote network. It doesn't seem to be a network issue because 2 friends with the same network and data package, one with Nexus 5 and the other with iphone 5, get great speeds (around 25-30 mbit).
At first I thought is was a SIM issue, since I was using the one that went for a swim. So I went and got a new SIM. Same problem.
I tried using another friends SIM from another network (WIND) on my phone, worked great. 27mbit.
The problem is the same with 3G and 4G.
Any ideas? Any ways to troubleshoot this better?
Have you checked your APN settings? That's the only thing I can think of at this point. I would check them against your friend who has an N5 on the same network and make sure everything matches exactly.
Checked it, they are the same. I talked with a Cosmote representative and they will look into my account settings in case something is wrong there. The only common denominator in the problem is my mobile account. Might have something to do with a trip I did abroad a few days ago and the roaming data limit that was imposed on my account after reaching 50mb d/l. Maybe they forgot to lift the limit when I returned to Greece.

Nexus 5 D820 not staying on network in Canada EFS problem??

Hello there,
I will try and explain this in the most detail I can.
I own a nexus 5 32gb phone, my wife owns a 16gb nexus 5. I was on prepaid service for the last 2 years with a company that did not offer LTE. I have switched to FIDO and they do have LTE. Her phone works great, texts send/recieve, mms, data all works as it should. My phone does not. it connects then shows LTE but cant do anything not even phone calls, sometimes a reboot works for a time other times not at all.
In comparing the 2 I realized I may have changed something long ago on mine and that is why it wont work right. If I go to the hidden settings page on both phones the difference I notice is that her phone shows ping google.com and mine shows ping google.co.uk.
For some reason I remember changing something that perhaps had to do with the radio way back to boost my service at the time. I have no idea how to change this back as the efs shows the uk ping. I assume this is why I cant have a proper working phone but maybe someone can work that out.
FYI, I have flashed every google version I could find and the same thing happens, tried flashing radios same thing. select USA band in hidden 4636 menu and it wont stay on data.
I am at a standstill now and need help. I hope this explains the problem and someone who knows can help me.
If I put my sim in wife phone it works as it should with no problems, I tired my sim in a phone at FIDO store and it works exactly like it should too so I know it is the phone.
I know the efs is specific for every device and there is no one size fits all for it, but is there a way to return it to true default? If not is there a way to rebuild it?
My phone at the moment is causing me grief I hope the community can figure this one out. I am willing to try anything at all, custom roms, efs wipe whatever makes this work
I have done wiping, roms etc before, it's been awhile but I am ok with doing any procedure you recommend
Thank you for your time, if you need more info, screenshots, etc let me know
data, signal, calls, sms wont stay on, loose signal all over

APN is fine, same as hers. Actually not now since i changed to 3g. But in testing the LTE it was the same
I have reverted to 3G and data seems better, at least stable. Getting lots of service drops though and sms are delayed sometimes dont come at all

I think you might have messed with your apn. Go to settings, wireless and networks, more, cellular network settings, access point names. Make sure what's in there is setup the same as your wife's phone.

FIXED! After 2 months of trying to figure this out it dawned on me. When prying the volume side of the back cover to fix my chargin port I must have inadvertently dislodged the black cable from the motherboard up top. upon first look it seems to be in place, upon further light inspection I could see it was not all the way on. Reconected it and BOOM full signal, full LTE and no other issues!!
I am so happy, lets party!
