[Philips Mobile] Owners Talk, Write here your experiences.... - Android General

[First of all I write immediately that I searched and didn't find Post on Philips Smartphones. If there are please Link, thanks]
Hi All,
Hi have a Philips W8555, bought it for curiosity because it was having excellent spec. at a low price and I never saw them in Europe
I found out that nearly stock Android [4.2.2 that I won't even wait for updates] is really boring, but seeing more than 1.3gb of Ram free puts a smile in my face.
The pro is:
-Design, I like it.
-battery life, 3300mAh are enough for a day, with my hard use I reach 50% in the evening then I'm happy.
-Dual normal sim, having sim1 with Local number plus sim2 only Data(with the same price of Data/call contracts, with only data you have 3x more data), so I can use my phone has a Hotspot(Working on site is usefull).
-Nice screen, visible also outside in day light.
-SD card Possibility
-Clean android(For me looks stock even if I never had a Nexus in my life)
And much more.
The Cons is:
-At Start up it was having Russian, but if you know the android menu by memory you can find where to change the language. Selected English, I'm Italian.
-Contacts are all there, but side bar, for fast research is with Russian Letters.
-Camera App. is Bad ,had to download one from the Play store to make decent photos, but with 13mpx they are still far from the quality of a S3 8mpx photo. But for decent photos I have a Camera.
-For sure no Updates..........I have this feeling
-Low Vibration and Ringtones
-Power saving switch that can accidentally switch in the pocket.Found a drastic solution.
-And Last the Glitchy Wakeup when unlocking the phone*
*When you are in the unlock screen it start going in tilt, pressing, swapping, going in the emergency call and dialing numbers. If you unlock it dose the same clicking around and it might change some settings.
But after 10-20 seconds it stops, like it was a kind of "touch calibration" and it happens randomly.
If it was not for the Glitchy Wakeup it would be a perfect Phone!
Now I'm also Attracted by the W6610, but I will wait a bit.

I will try to share my experience with w6610 (my English isn't perfect, i'm Ukrainian).
My previous phone was HTC One X.. the one with extra low battery life and quite good performance.
Well, this w6610 is 1:1 by performance to «HOX», but with awesome battery life.
I'm using pebble watch so i have 24h Bluetooth switched on, alongside with WiFi and GPRS.
With all that 3 day battery life. This phone has solid design, very nice screen (can't see a difference with bigger resolutions). Really glad to be an owner %)
cant wait to flash a custom ROM x)

Philips W3500
I have a Philips W3500 and im pretty impressd with this phone...to bad i dont se much interest in this development of this phone...i would love to see a custom rom for this phone like android 4.4.4...spec wise this phone is pretty good with 2200mah battery and a mtk6582 chipset...i would love to see some kitkat goodness for this phone

W8555 Android Wear
I have been in contact with Philips over possibility to upgrade from current rom Android OS 4.2 to OS 4.3
My understanding that one of the main difference between OS4.2 and OS 4.3 is support of Android Wear . One of the requirement is to have low energy Bluetooth 4.0, which Philips W8555 reportedly has.
So fat they would not budge. This is really disappointing as it make most of the android Wear devices not compatible with Philips W8555. Making it morally out of date straight away.
Do you know whether there is a way to upgrade rom to OS 4.3 for W8555?

Lollipop update for W6610
Hello other-philips-phone-owners! Why there aren't more people attracted to massive battery life, I don't understand. I also don't understand why philips mostly only sells these phones in India and Russia. I was browsing around for w6610 custom firmware, and found this link: http://www.rom-lollipop.org/mp3-0/philips-w6610-6380.html
This webpage talks about an xda tutorial that I cannot find. Is this a hoax, or has anyone else seen/known about this missing thread?

I have seen this one,but I could never bypass the survey and stuff!
I'm looking toward downloading this ROM too.If someone finds clockwork or twrp for w6610 do let us know

[Q] Samsung Galaxy pro

hi
I am thinking to buy the Samsung Galaxy pro
I read many review and specfication but dint find any information about its ARMV
and on some sites there is a debate that it has got secondary camera or not
and does the adobe flash player works same as it runs on samsung galaxy s
plz clear my douts
thanx.........
I just got one... it does not have any secondary camera.... But let me tell u... i feel that its one of the best android mid range phone in the market... i know its not one of the prettiest looking but it surely is one carrying a good processor speed and RAM
@gauravkittz: Congrats on your new phone!
I am also looking at this phone seriously so I hope you don't mind a couple of questions.
In pinoytechblog {can't post links yet, so just google it), the reviewer posted that the Facebook app has the icons on both side cut off by the screen edge and arcMedia player won't display in landscape mode.
Can you comment on both these point? It's not like I want to use arcMedia player, but I just want to know if there are incompatibitlity with some programs existing for this device.
Next, what's your battery life like? If Samsung had included 1500 mA battery instead 1350 mA, it would have been the BOMB! but would really appreciate any estimate.
How's the music playback with the earphones provided with the set, and how many hours of music playback can the set handle?
Well, I hope you can give me some of the answers for the questions mentioned, and any shameless promoting of the handset is also welcome!
Thanks in advance!
I picked my Samsung Galaxy Pro up on Thursday and am really enjoying it.
The 800 Mhz processor and memory seem to buzz along quite comfortably and I seldom have any slowdowns or freezes.
I have not found Adobe Flash Player in the Market, and when I log onto market.android.com and try installing it from there I get a message saying it is not compatible with my device.
The battery life is comparable to my HTC Desire GSM in an average day's use (with skype running all the time)
The device was bought from a Three store in the UK and is network locked to Three UK.
Something also to note is that the Android version is 2.2.2 rather than the 2.2.1 as advertised on the Samsung and Three website.
If you have any more questions post them here or on Twitter @Todoleo, I'll do my best to get back to you asap.
@ todoleo: Thanks for the reply.
Can you by any chance comment on a certain complaint by a customer in some website (which I forgot about) that there is no call accept and call end button and he had a hard time ending calls? It sound so stupid on paper, and looking at the phone, there is not call accept and call end button, but I always assumed that there were on-screen equivalent...
Can you give some numbers regarding battery life? I know that battery life is directly affected by how you use the phone, but gmarena user reviews gave such conflicting information, I thought I would ask you for some clarification.
Lastly, regarding Flash, I do remember reading in some website that the phone is Flash 10.1 compatible and some people claim to be able to play youtube vids direct from websites; are the misinformed or is it confirmed that the phone is Flash incompatible?
Thanks for all you help! Flash is not the deal breaker for me. Battery life is more important. If I can get some positive confirmation about the rumored 600+ standby time - or even a third of the time mentioned - I'll be very happy.

As far as battery life is concerned I can explain how I use the phone and how long the battery lasts. I am a heavy user and always have 3g/umts switched on with Skype+seesmic+gmail+gtalk running in the background.
When I get up and go to work, I unplug the phone and use it all day for calls, texts and data. When I get home in the evening, I still have battery left to do sofa surfing while watching tv. As far as I am concerned the battery life is similar to the HTC Desire and the ZTE Blade: enough to get me through a day.
The phone has no green and red call hardware buttons. The Software does have start and end call buttons. I believe the proximity sensor kicks in when in a call because when I move the phone from my ear to look at the screen the screen turns on and I do have an end call button to press onscreen.
So far I have not been able to install or run flash on the device, but I'll look into it and let you know.
Feel free to ask any more questions!
keyboard backlight
The keyboard backlight turns off after about 20 secs unlike the display which can be set. It is annoying when you sms in the dark... Anyone experience this problem...?

What happens when you press an arrow key? You don't type anything and the screen keeps on.
I don't have the pone yet but I think it would be a solution...
Phonearena review:

i just got the device, and it seems OK
screen is not the best with small text for my eyes
no flash support is a bummer although it was mentioned that it will support it over at GSMARENA.com
altogether the device is neat, and beats some blackberry devices with one hand
right now i have only one concern, how to update the software as there isnt Kies support!
i got mine recently. its an awesome phone. keyboard is snappy for messaging, phone calls sounds good for both parties. SipDroid works a charm. ummm, yeah as a phone its really really good. If you want a smart phone with a large screen, perhaps its not for you. but if you spend most of you time using a phone or sending messages, its very good. little apps work, things like skype work. ability to create VPN's back to your home systems (avoiding the phone networks) works. Google maps with the GPS etc. For me, the screen size is fine - i suspect the next gen will be bigger. I've never really bothered with twatter or facebook etc and its nice to have a phone by default where these aren't in your face.
basically, it works and I think works very well. My previous phone was a smartphone with oodles of processing and a large touch screen but I found I never used most of its potential and as I have a tablet (of which tethers happily to the samsung on 3G) for large screen browsing i recommend this phone!

You can install apps on the SD. Go to Settings/Applications...
The RAM is 512mb but Android needs memory to be loaded. For this reason you "only" have 279Mb of RAM. If we could install some cooked ROM we would have more RAM but I don't know if this phone will be as successful as for it. It's soon for this, I think.

I think QVGA resolution isn't supported...
I have been playing with my Galaxy Pro these past days. This is what i noticed.
1. Battery
I have an app called Battery indicator and OSMonitor which indicate the percentage of battery left. I charged the phone while it is switched off up to 100%. I switched it on without the plug. The app read 97%. And after five minutes, it dropped to 93%. Then it jumped to 87%. Then stayed 87% for a long time. I don't know what is the logic of these apps. Of course you cannot see the % in the notification bar. It just show the battery image, no percentage. So samsung might have intentionally not put the % so users will not complain. I will inform you later what is the actual time till it is dead.
2. Samsung IM App
Samsung is nice to include this. But only YM, Windows Messenger and Google talk? No Facebook?. Also, when using the app, you have no option to hide offline contacts.
3. Some apps cannot be seen in the Market
The reason could be that the app does not support the phone's resolution. I have android before and playing Words with friends. I cannot see this phone in the market.
I've heard ther's no kies support?
what does this mean?no updates?
I'm trying to understand if it's better value for money than the htc chacha
am sure chacha will be more expensive than galaxy pro. But 600Mhz processor? If the battery is significantly longer, I may shift.
Update regarding battery. In my third day of Galaxy pro, it passed 16hours of moderate to heavy use. This includes always online in Trillian (chat client with YM/FB)... Ocassional web surfing, sms.. No music/video yet as am still testing this as messenging machine...
I have my portable battery with me so i can charge it anywhere.. though, I home there will be a higher capacity battery available out there. 16hours of continous use is acceptable for me..

[Q] Cubot one info (HTC Clone)

preferably to anyone that has had the Cubot one for longer than a month.
does the phone still work as you had hoped? its everything fine with it?
i have read alot of good things about this phone, and am interested in getting it, i currently have the iphone 4.
this will be my first 'clone phone'
just want to know if it still holds up after a while
thanks.
Hi, I've been using the cubot one for about 4 months.
It's a good phone but, to be honest, I don't know if new next phone will be a Chinese one again.
First of all you can appreciate a big difference in performance as compared to a branded phone with similar specs (the branded one performs better), which can may consider acceptable seen the huge difference in the price.
Problem is that the lack of performance has a big impact on the way you'll use the phone (compared to the way you wanted to use it)
Do you use your phone as alarm clock? Well tell your boss you may be late sometimes becuase the cubot one happens to switch off overnight (even with fully charged battery) time by time. It happenwd to me probably 5 times in 4 months!
Do you use to take pictures with your phone? Well, its probably best you get a pocket camera always with you. Resolution of photos with the cubot one is not bad (it's a reasonable 7Mpix)...when you can see them!!! If you use the flash, the result is a completely white photo, due, I guess, to a wrong timing shutter-flash. So no night photos. If you take pictures with plenty of natual light, well 4 out of 5 will be corrupeted in zero time and the result is "no thumbnail available". I've missed a lot of shots in this way.
I still have stock 4.2.1 rom (august 2013) and time by time phone freezes or goes to deep stand by (remove battery necessary), also periodically I find new apps installed without my permission!!!
My room uses embedded GOlauncher, it does not use stock android!
From reviews it seems you can use it to play heavy games, but I can't even play temple run, it becomes a stop motion like game.
I'm currently looking for a better rom, hoping that usage experience will improve.
My partner has the same phone with june 2014 4.2.1 rom, in her case it's stock android, and she has a bit less issues than I do, but she doesn't use the phone as "intensively" as I do either.

Xperia XZ Dual Sim, Is This Phone Worth Buying ?!

Hi All:
I intend to buy the Sony Xperia XZ Dual Sim, I'm wondering how this device is performing ?
1- Any lag or serious issues with the Nougat firmware ?
2- In call voice quality around noise & loud places.
3- Battery life .
I will be thankful for any additional information or advises regarding this smartphone
PadrePio666 said:
No issues, the battery performs better than devices with 3400+ mAh, smooth and even if everyone tries desperately to hide it, it performs better than the oneplus 3 which brags with nerd specs and blablablah , the microphones do their job when isolating your voice from background noise.
However, I suggest you the single sim version since it gets updated faste

I have the dual one and i get nougat same day as single sim. It depends on customization number to get updates faster.
Also the xz dual has 64GB internal memory.

Afaik, you can flash single sim custom ROMs on dual sim but you will be able to use only one sim. And that isn't a big deal if you don't buy the dual version for 2nd sim functionality but for storage (like me).
Stability is the same I guess. Since it use the same SoC.

Very happy with mine. It feels lovely, it's fast and smooth in operation, battery life is sufficient and call quality is the best of any mobile phone I've ever used. Really, my only issue with it at all is that the fingerprint reader struggles badly if you're even slightly sweaty.

Yep, but you get double the built-in storage of the single-SIM version which in my mind more than makes up for that. After all, if you need two SIMs then the single-SIM version is useless to you. But if you rarely or never need two SIMs, you get twice the built-in storage PLUS a MicroSD card slot. Can't beat that!
In my experience it depends on the price. It's been quite laggy since MM and got much better in the latest N update, however there is some minor lag every now and then but it is FAST. Voice is fine however as in most Xperias the volume can be quite low compared to other flagships. Battery life is average, nothing great and not bad either, i typically get 3-4 hrs SoT and have to charge it every night, sometimes in the middle of the day if there is a weird drain, I used to get 4-5 hrs on the Z3. I would say from the phones that were released this year its up there with the best (S7, Pixel, probably the OP3T which i havent seen or used) with the Pixel being better overall.

Actually I'm interest about Sony Xperia Smartphones because of the Double tab to wake up and turn off the screen.
It really let me use the Smartphone without I have to touch a button, and I feel comfortable with that, plus the Sony Android UI is almost lag free with useful tips and tricks ...............close to stock with minimum bloatware and useful Apps from Sony specially the gallery App .
I'm now using HTC 10, and I'm suffering from the new Sense UI because I can't turn off all vibrations !!!!!
like If I unlocked the screen by using any tweak or fingerprint sensor the mobile will vibrate, If I got an sms in stock app the mobile will also vibrate !!!!
in spite of that I turned off vibration and vibration feedback but still the smartphone vibrate in lot off scenarios !!!!
because of that I decide to go back to Sony with the best UI.

No problem with my Z5 Compact.

Quick question, is rooting the XZ Dual the same process as rooting the XZ? I'm buying the XZs Dual and I wanted to know if it should theoretically be the same

Backup TA>Unlock Bootloader>Flash TWRP + SuperSu
Xperia XZ Dual is a very good phone. There is only a problem with Android 7.0 update, because of bluetooth connections. I should have not done this firmware upgrade, since they have an android 7.1.1 firmware.

New user/noob questions

HI all. To make matters short, after three years of being a huawei user I've bought my self one xiaomi mi4 lte-cu.
It came with stock 4.4.4. kitkat and MIUI 7 by xioami.eu 5.12.11 Beta.
My question is what would be the best rom for my phone (Mi 4LTE-CU 2/16 gb). I am looking for good battery life, stability (everything works like it should) and good camera quality. And if anyone can point me in the right direction what are the best instructions for backup (before upgrade), and the instructions for upgrade (necessary steps).
Now I get aprox 4h of Screen on time (with 4g and wifi enabled interchangeably), everything works most of the time ok (sometimes some games crash depending on the battery level), and the picture quality of the camera is so so.
My previous phone was Huawei P7, which by available specification should have an identical sony camera sensor. However, it produced better photo quality by order of magnitued (in my humble opinion). I wonder why is this so?
Any help would be much obliged....

S7: Still worth it in 2018?

Hi all,
I'm planning on getting my wife a brand new S7, but I'm not sure if the phone still performs well compared to most modern smarphones in 2018. She needs nothing special - just a good camera & overall smooth experience.
I'll be happy to read our thoughts on this.
Cheers!

If I wasn't a sucker for new phones and latest tech I would have no need to upgrade my S7 to anything newer, still super quick with amazing camera, and after almost 2 years still getting good battery life
Your wife would be happy with an S7
go on the s7. I can't find a replacement at less than 400 euros : camera As good as a s8 or recent smartphones under 600€.
Good battery life and very smooth
Depends on the pricing.
For this money u get a 2016 flagship, not to compare with a midrange 2018 phone which cost the same.
The hardware of the s7 will be much better.

Hi Detection,
I know this is out of this topic, but wanted to ask you. I believe you are on Oreo right now, what do you find better than on Nougat. Jumped into nougat only a couple of months ago, and really getting more battery life than on MM, and other things are much better and smooth.
Is Oreo really worth it for our S7?

Pros:
Better battery life (but could be from the factory reset)
While out away from WiFi, 4G/LTE uses next to no battery now, I can go out with 100% battery, listen to music for my 30 min walk to the gym, 2-3 hours there, then another 30 mins walk back listing to music, and still have 92% when I get home
Slightly better performance of the OS
If an SMS has a link, it shows a thumbnail of the site without becoming MMS
PiP able to watch videos/YT while using the phone for other things
Dual Messenger (Use two separate accounts for the same app such as WhatsApp, only just discovered this, not sure if it was in Nougat)
Some others that I can't remember off hand
Cons:
Keep screen off while in a dark place such as bag/pocket is gone, now it just stops touch working but allows the screen to remain on say if you get an SMS (dumb)
Charging sound now part of System volume level, so no charge connect sound if you lower system volume to kill shutter sound
When downloading an APK via the browser or other app, the notification saying it has completed downloading no longer allows you to start the install by pressing it, it just clears the notification forcing you to go find it via a file explorer (This could be a bug as it has worked one time only since upgrading)
--
Would I go back to Nougat?
No not really, wouldn't take the chance on the battery life again, and I can live with the cons which I'm guessing could be improved / fixed over time, for a first release (re-release) it's a good update for me
It's not a massive update to Nougat, could really easily have been just a normal update to Nougat itself, more like a service pack than a full OS update IMO, nothing like MM > N
If you've just moved to N then I'd just wait until O is pushed to your phone via OTA, not really anything worth shouting about

Pros:
Better battery life (but could be from the factory reset)
