you are not alone. i am wondering why the low light fps is so low, too. even my old xperia arc s (which has singlecore and adreno 205 gpu) was capable of recording 720p videos at 30 fps in low light scenes.

Uh, are you sure you don't have the slow-motion video option turned on? My G records in 30fps still, even in low-light.

no no no xD. i would recocnize if i had slow motion in my videos , because the video playback would be 15 fps (but recorded with 60 of course).
And i also don't have stock moto Firmware installed. i flashed Google Play Edition Rom long time ago (which doesn't even have the slow motion feature).
The Google Play Edition isn't even the problem for the cameras bad low light performance (i also had the stock motorola firmware with the motorola camera app before i flashed the GPE Rom)
maybe you and me could post video samples to compare the fps in bright light scenes and low-light scenes
Edit: i already found a video sample that perfectly explains what i mean. immediately in the first moment you can see the low light performance. and when he moves the camera to the window (where it gets bright) you can see that the fps rapidly go up to 30fps. and when he moves the camera away again to the indoor low light, it gets laggy and goes down to 15-18 fps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWf8UBSC2tU
This is a normal way for the camera to behave. In darker light, the exposure must be increased. I.e. the camera takes longer in order to capture more light. In higher end devices this isn't a problem since they capture enough light anyway (or have an "internal" FPS that is higher), but with the G, moto has to cut corners to achieve the price point.
If framerate is critical to you, use a camera app that allows manual exposure control and keep it low. You'll be in for a very dark video though.

read my second post. my old arc s increased the exposure in a really nice and clean way and it was even smoother in low-light scenes, while increasing the exposure to a really high level

And read my post again. The Arc S was not a bargain bottom device. You only need to meet a baseline level of camera performance to get the right exposure for a given framerate. With a higher quality camera sensor, you can push the exposure still higher when needed (dark environment) and still stay above this baseline.
The Moto G uses a cheap, low performance sensor. Recording just in regular light is already just about using the sensor to its limits. Low-light goes below the baseline, and so the FPS drops. There's no way around it. The SOC in the Moto G is easily capable of recording/encoding 1080p, but the camera module isn't up to the task, for the same reason.
It's not the sensor. Its the firmwares fault. With the normal motorola camera app, you are able to record videos at 60 fps. while recording the slow motion videos, the framerate drops by 15-20 fps when you record some low light scenes, which does mean the sensor has still 40-45 fps available for recording the video. The software needs just some tweaks here and there for a big improvement in fps, noise reduction, color reproduction etc
Jishnu Snur's modified motorola camera app already does have better color reproduction compared to the stock one.

Even xperia m had this issue but they fixed that with a firmware update.but Motorola doesn't even know about this issue.idk if everyone is having this issue.btw being a bargain device doesn't mean to ignore all its shortcomings

Can anyone please explain why the Sensation has a lower framerate when in camera mode (not shooting, just panning around) than say a Galaxy S2?
I had a GS2 for testing a few days and it's amazing how it maintains high FPS (perfect fluid panning motion) even in low light conditions. The Sensation can't do that, it turns almost into a slideshow...
I noticed the CM7 AOSP camera does a better job than stock/amaze mod, but it's still not 100% fluid.
I'm not expecting RED quality when shooting video, but the differences are quite visible between phones nowadays.

I would say that it the app. Because I bought anther camera app, and the FPS is much better. It still lags a bit, but not as much as the stock one.

60 FPS is no slow motion. Other flagships support sound in 60 FPS - SGS 5, Sony Xperia Z2, LG G3, ect.
OPO seems NOT which is huge minus, making camera useless.
60fps is slow motion. its 24 or 30 fps which is normal speed.

If you record at 30fps and play back at 30fps, that is normal, and standard.
If you record at 60fps and play back and 30fps that is HALF SPEED, a type of slow motion.
But if you record at 60fps and play back at 60fps, that is a newer type of smooth playing STANDARD SPEED playback. Less jitters, choppy etc.
Same goes for 120fps etc. It doesn't matter how many fps you record in, it matters how you fast you play it back.
So 60fps recording, played back at 60fps, should have audio.

It's been a while and there has been at least one update... Does anyone know if they do 1080*1920 @60FPS now on the OnePlus One?
I just ordered one a couple of days ago, and am hoping for the best when it comes to camera video updates... I plan on recording in 4K mostly, and downscaling to 1080P to see if that improves the sharpness. 60FPS in full HD might be a tempting alternative though.(Often down-scaling is better than taking an original shot at your target resolution.)

The 60FPS and 120FPS mode in all resolutions are only slow motion still.
I'm also searching for a possibility to record in 60fps.
I really really miss that. Vids look really choppy in 30fps, srsly.
60fps is NOT slow motion. 120fps is NOT slow motion. 10000000 fps is not slow motion.
Recording @ 60fps and playing back at 30fps produces a slowmotion movie, sound cannot be played back this way.
60fps played back @ 60fps produces a (more) fluid experience, without much blend and the brain filling in the missed frames.
30fps played @ 60fps produces a fastmotion movie.

Well I have a Oneplus One and I want 1080/720 @ 60FPS. The lack of this feature is my only disappointment with this phone, everything else is totally fantastic.
For people who don't understand why I want 60fps video then here is my explanation:
Recording at 30fps is okay but as soon as you have anything moving quickly, such as a close car passing from left to right or if you pan the camera, the moving objects become a blur, at 60fps fast motion remains clear. For those who have only ever had 30fps experience you won't understand how important this is, but for those who have had a 60fps experience, you cannot go back to seriously filming anything in 30fps.
It should be possible on the Oneplus one, but I get the feeling the phones firmware currently will not allow this option. I have tried various apps and even written my own specifying 720 and 1080 @ 60fps, but I only ever get sound when 30fps or 60fps no sound.
It's a shame as the hardware is quite capable!

It's 1/8s, not 1,8. It's next to impossible to tweak it by yourself. And it's probably coming with the update, playing it for 3 seconds in fHD rather than 6 seconds in HD

The recording time for super slow motion is limited by the hardware's capabilities to the 1/8s.
Yup, it's limited by the RAM buffer in the camera. As far as I can tell, we could extend the duration by lowering the resolution down from 720p, but that would look awful, even 720p doesn't produce great results unless there's tons of light. Just as the new XZ2 lineup will have 1080p slowmo but with even shorter duration, because it has the same RAM buffer amount (with the option to go with 720p, though). What I'd rather like is to have the ability to lower the framerate down from 960FPS, that way we could also make longer slowmo videos, for example if we could do ~400FPS, that's still more than enough for a cool shot and would be able to extend the duration. 960FPS is really cool, but not necessary for capturing some cool stuff. It always bugged me that they fixed the slowmo framerate to 960FPS, I'm sure it's possible to make it adjustable via software. What framerate do iPhones shoot slowmo at? 250-ish? And you can make them as long as you like, right?

Switching to 1080p super slowmo makes the slowmo capture time even shorter, it is already nearly impossible at 720p to capture the right moment you want in slowmo, 1080p makes it evene shorter and harder. I'd rather have lower framerate and longer duration of the superslowmo than higher resolution. I just contacted sony support about this possible feature, still waiting for the answer. It's stupid to have a hardware capable of recording at 960FPS and not being able to lower that framerate in order to extend the duration of the shot. It's a software limitation and an oversight, nothing more, the hardware is there. It's like Sony saying, "Hey, here's one of the coolest features we ever implemented in a phone. But good luck actually using it because it's damn near impossible to do so. But it's there. Please buy our phones. Cheers." The RAM buffer and the sensor in the XZ2 will allegedly be the same as on XZ1 and Premium. If they can get 1080p super slowmo on it, it's a software modification. And if they can do that, they can also give us the option to switch the framerate. But they don't because higher specs sell better. It's all good on paper, but sucks in practical use.
So I was looking for a solid video recording app and stumbled across this, if you want a manual video app you will be more than happy as the controls are amazing. To achieve these surprising video setups simply press the settings toggle and select Resolution, bump it all the way up. Make sure the FPS and the playback FPS is at 30 and do not change any of the Exposure/ISO options. Now that is done I have found that in low light conditions the FPS may go down just a bit, around 2FPS, which is not that much off a difference. I have tried different combinations but it seems that 42FPS is the limit for all resolutions which is very sad as we still do not have [email protected] in 2018 . But overall this is amazing, the front camera shocked me the most, it not only unlocked a super high resolution it also comes with a very nice FPS. Some bad things are that the zoom is not very good on the viewfinder at all (but is alright in the actual video) compared to other video camera apps and it does cost alot of money for an app (around $13 USD), but the features it brings make it more than worth it .
I am using Cosmic OS 3.1 Oreo 8.1 unofficial with official Gapps and I haven't tried this on any other ROM.

Well, it is not for everyone. I took the plunge and I have checked my videos metadata and gone through frame by frame to see if their is just duplicates and to my surprise it is true 42FPS with the super high resolution. My friend has a LG V10 and the customization on this camera app is very comparable to his, which is very good. The quality of what this app produces is mind-blowing, it makes any low light shot look super. I know what you mean, this price is way too high for any app, so I would only recommend this app to proper enthusiasts. The typical user wouldn't really care or notice the bumped up pixels and FPS.

I might have the wrong version ( V7 beta 1) but this is fake 60FPS all it is is 30FPS video sped up to become 60FPS, its been like this for a long time .

Even of you toggle that option on. Camera records at 1080p 24fps.for some reason...1080p30fps is the limit...Dont really know why and the EIS video recording sucks..Big time...

Terrible gui and there is nothing special with this app. I personally like stock Lineage 15.1 camera or one of Google Camera mods. OpenCamera is also not bad (gui is not beautiful, but easy to use).

How did you get 42FPS in video recording..i only get 30FPS or below in 1080p/4k mode.. and max 120FPS in 720p. that too in slow mo..couldnt get 60/50/42 fps in any video quality option....

Bump up the fps in 4K all the way up to 30fps and make sure the playback speed it the same, record your video with auto exposure, then you can check what real fps output (should be around 45fps in good light) is using this:

Well so far this Google HDR algorithm is so good, literally no other photo app can compare it it. So what I recommend is BSG's new Gcam, it provides so much customization to get the perfect picture, especially with the new auto shutter speed version - as the Le Max 2 has a limited measly shutter speed of half a second, this is merges photos with the limited shutter speed giving out a much nicer image. Although front camera portraits and HDR have that annoying Green filter, but i mostly use my main camera only so for me this is what I use the most.

I find that while Serjo87 Gcam's are very good Toylan009 Gcam's are more stable and have no green tint aswell.

Nope. It's worth it for the incredibly smooth zoom alone.
Too much to set the bitrate speed. Therefore the video takes up a lot of space.
Has anybody noticed how terrible the video recording performance is on this phone? Even in fairly well lit conditions there's so much smoothing going on it makes the overall video look absolutely terrible.
Is there a way to turn this smoothing off? I have been using GCam purely for recording videos and the quality is a lot better (doesn't have this smoothing effect) but the app itself isn't perfect and crashes fairly regularly. Any suggestions/known fixes welcome

I noticed this too.
Even on 60FPS it is not as smooth as I was hoping - my eyes actually hurt when I watch videos with moving objects.
Still objects are very, very good, especially with 5X optical zoom.
I think this is something to do with steadiness not with FPS.
