Need some help! Thinking of getting a nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi to all I'm thinking of getting a nexus 5.
But would like to know a couple of things and where better to ask.
First off I'm a bit hard of hearing so need the in-call speaker to be loud so as a nexus 5 user would you say the volume is about the same as a s4
As at the minute I'm using a galaxy s advance
Second I play a lot of games so what is the battery life like on a nexus 5.
Thanks for any help given

For me the in-call speaker is loud enough. Don`t know your degree of hard hearing but i think it will be loud enough and is surely compatible with the S4. If needed you can always root it and increase the volume of the mic and speaker. As for batterylife its average and compearable with the S4 or Sony for instance. It also is very user dependant and of your signal reception quality. On stock you have 3-4 hrs. screenontime and with a good custom kernel about 5-7 hours. For its price its the best phone you can find imo.
And yes questions should be posted in Q&A next time

Hmmm. I love my nexus 5, don't get me wrong and yes the speaker is loud enough BUT with a Samsung the speaker is linear and you don't need to be exact with your ear placement on the speaker. On the N5 it is small and circular. Not everyone has this problem but I know I'm not alone....it can be quite awkward to get that speaker central to your ear to get a decent volume from it.
I would recommend testing it before buying

The in-call speaker seems to be the same as the S4, but the exterior speaker where speaker-phone or music is played does not seem quite as loud.
As for battery life with gaming, I would say look elsewhere. While I agree with gee2012 that the Nexus 5 is the best phone for the price--and I would even go so far as to say it's my favorite phone to date and possibly the best all-around phone pre-GS5 and M8--I do not think it is the best phone for gaming. The screen is great, and the processor seems to be able to handle anything I throw at it, but the battery cannot handle extensive gaming. I hear people claiming all the time about 6-7 hours screen-on-time, but I think that is the rare white buffalo that you'll never see in actual use.
First, I haven't actually seen a single screen shot hitting more than 6 hours SOT, but I do believe it is possible and I have seen trusted sources make independent claims. Second, achieving those results requires aftermarket tweeks, such as finding the perfect custom ROM and kernel combo. I haven't found a combo that gives me much better than stock, although that is completely fine for me (stock on N5 is much better than stock on GNex and slightly better than N4). Third, if you do somehow manage to get 7 hours SOT, it means you a) were not running processor-intensive processes (so no gaming), and b) did not get much better than 7 hours total battery life. You basically took your phone of the charger, played on it non-stop until your phone died, then put it back on the charger.
I would love for someone to prove me wrong, but I just haven't seen it. If someone can post legit screenshots of getting 6-7 hours SOT while gaming, I'd love to see it. But if I was buying a phone for primarily gaming purposes (which I would never do, that's what tablets are for), I would aim for something with a bigger and/or removable battery.
As for normal operations, the battery life is fine. I took my phone off the charger on Saturday morning and did not need to plug it back in until Sunday night this weekend, and even then I was only at like 20%. My total SOT was only about 2-2.5 hours, though, and I was connected to WiFi the entire time and used my phone only to text, browse the internet, and play Words with Friends when my N7 was out of reach (busy, hermit-like weekend). Using my N5 as a smart phone in conjunction with using my Nexus 7 more as a computer (most web-browsing, most gaming, and all Chrome Casting), I rarely have below 50% battery at the end of a 12 hour day.

Yep. I can show you a screen shot of when I got 7 hours screen on time. However, this is on non-intensive use. Browsing, texts, emails. WiFi. Consistent phone signal. The use was normal. But as soon as the CPU or GPU ramps up, this won't be possible. Really racing / gta - you'll be lucky to get 2 hours SoT and leave enough battery for the phone to be a phone for the rest of the day.
One thing I have noticed though is these games ramp cpu to max and battery drains. I had profiles for the games above to max CPU at 1700 or there abouts as the games don't need it.
Space will always be an issue here for a gamer. Yeah its good for playing games but not for long

It's more common then you might think, just check the battery results thread. Root is not required but light usage, low brightness, mostly WiFi, and eliminating background drains certainly helps.
Each one I've posted there was 6-8 hours SoT over 24+ hours with little to no gaming. My daily average is 5-6 with half the day on data and short gaming sessions.
I've tested the device purely for gaming as well. Average gaming time seems to be 3.5 hours. Some games are more optimized than others.

Playing a lot of games will destroy any phones battery. Thats just how it is. No matter what you buy, you'll be far below the average battery times if you game a lot.
My point is, any phone you buy....you'll want a charger nearby if you play games a lot. Or an external battery pack.
So....I wouldn't worry about battery life much, you'll be charging frequently no matter what phone you have.
The N5 can play them nicely....that should be what matters. ?

I get 5 hours sot with Franco kernel and carbon and almost 2 days with moderate battery life should be better on 4.4.3

Disappointed with arc, now thinking about Nexus S

Hey Nexus S forum! hope everyone's enjoying I used to have an iPhone 4 and now after much thinking between the arc and nexus S went for the arc. It is not a bad phone, but I am not satisfied because of the following:
- Battery life sucks, as in with light-moderate usage. For a perspective (since I suck horribly at figuring out how to take a screenshot off the arc), I made an hour long call (59:34 mins to be exact), played around on FPSe for 12 mins, had music playing for around 48 mins, and rest idle with background data off, 3g and wifi off and at low signal areas even airplane mode on.
I get around 16 hrs with just this much usage. I am a heavy user with streaming/music and IM but the battery life drops like a rock once I try any of the two things simultaneously. And it is quite a tease having to keep brightness at minimum all the time.
- Headphones, good headphones, but I cannot use my 3rd party JVC ones which I could with the iPhone. What's the deal? It seems true you need only sony headphones for it...
- Performance: too many browser and ebuddy force closures Especially with setcpu on conservative.
Since its a branded arc I cannot tweak it except for apps. Now I am thinking I should have chosen a Nexus S since it is available on Rogers and the screen looks better to me. Camera I haven't checked but from forum pics thread it looks comparable to the iPhone 4 which is a plus anyway.
I am not going back to the iPhone 4 after experiencing android, but I need a better battery life and if not stock then at least the availability to tweak it using a kernel that will take care of it.
So any of you Nexus S users having that great battery life many forum reviews mention? What about after kernel tweaks. I am thinking of keeping the NS untill fall when the SGS2 will be available on Rogers. I am also a bit of a tweaker and the arc while being "sexy" is not modifiable much.
Thanks!!
from my experience, i dont think nexus s battery life will be any longer than arc. anyway it depends very much on the apps that you installed...
my NS battery life is ard 18-20hrs avg, with moderate usage like
-brightness auto
-backgrd sync ( turned off for fb, twitter)
-15 mins of Modern Combat 2
-90mins of Music
-20min of Web browsing
-15 min of Fb-ing
-The rest of the time are left idling...
all these values are approximate values...
hope it helps
Note: do check up Manage Applications -> Running to see what apps are running, used to install tap tap revenge and realised from there it sucked lotsa battery juice.

Well I must confess I am not surprised but still its shocking that you decided to go with ARC over Nexus S. Its anyone's personal preference.
My Two Cents...
NS Battery life for me runs anywhere between 12 hours to 30 hours depending how much I use it. If I play games on it, few phone calls and background sync on all time, with screen auto brightness, news reading for abour 30 mins in morning, 3G or WiFI on, BT on, when I leave for work in morning at 8, battery is fully charged, by 8 pm, if i did all mentioned above, I would generally be at 25%.
With no games all day, I still can squeeze an entire night and would probably not charge till I reach work next morning. That means around 24 hours of usage.
Comparing NS with ARC, NS has a better screen, less MP camera, but 8.1 MP doesn't really mean anything to me as one of my buddy has it and I hate it.
I have used iPhone/HTC/Motorola Headphones with my NS and they all work.
So far I have never experienced a single force close problem with my NS.
ARC still doesn't have any dev support, but NS, man, you can unlock the bootloader and do whatever you want to do with your phone. Root it, tweak it, custom ROM it(Here is the link to all the available ROM summary http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1067813)...
Phone is really light in weight, I love the Contour Display/Curvy screen, I wouldn't be sold for the Sony Bravia Engine display.
Its capable of playing almost all the games available in market as of today, I haven't seen any performance Lag.
I think you would be better off getting a NS over ARC. Again, its just my My Two Cents...
Good Luck!!!
By mistake reposted... Sorry.
Hey deplate07, are you running it stock or modded? Because I had a captivate with a week with firefly rom and it matched my iphone's battery life with heavy usage. I still regret selling it at times. If ns can do same after modding than sure, I will happily switch because what use is bravia engine and 3g when both are constantly off to save battery and I still get just 16 hrs
Also considering the atrix

Nexus S for the win! You can just use UV kernel to save your battery life
Although I'd recommend the S based on my own experience, I would caution you not to expect miracles in battery life vis a vis the Arc. I would haver rated the 16 hours you're getting as pretty good. Coming from the iPhone to Android you do have to be a bit more proactive in managing battery life -- dimming the display and shortening the display timeout, turning off unused radios, etc.

Problem is on the arc I am not even doing much. My brightness is at minimujm at all times. Backlight is off. Bravia engine is off. 3G is on probably 5 mins. for a day only. Wifi is rarely on. Music playback just 30 mins. And only 5-10 mins calls.
This is madness. I probably should have not complained and researched before hand but if people are saying they are getting 16 hours with 50% brightness, syncing at regular intervals, calls and decent music playback I would happily take the 16 hours.
At least the NS can be modded. I think i'll be switching in a couple days with this or a captivate and see how it turns out.

Yeap, I'm running stock ROM... I think up to date nexus s and nexus one is the most optimized and up to date android phone.
By the way I don't turn off 3G, and one thing I'm sure is that nexus s is pretty easy on battery when idling ...

Advice People

I am stuck between the LG G2 and the Nexus 5. I will buy the phone unlocked. Both are priced the same in my country. I've been to multiple stores and tried the devices.
I really like the nexus 5 but the battery life is main concern.
My daily usage is somewhat like this:
2 hours of offline music (screen off).
30-60 minutes of web browsing
10 minutes of phone calls
30-40 minutes spent on apps like feedly and 9gag and other such apps
Average amount of messaging
Don't click a lot of pictures (1-3 in a day or even none)
Average amount of messaging
Most of the day is spent on wifi
Network signal strength is good. No LTE in my country so I use 3G
Little to no gaming on the phone (1 hour cumulatively in 3-4 days, mostly 2D games)
So can I get about 13-16 hours with this kind of usage? Will android lollipop make things better?
Or should I go for the G2. I know that the battery life is much better. But Personally I don't like the user interface on the G2. Plus I've heard that the bootloader is locked on the G2. I know about the Loki bypass but it has been patched up in the 4.4.2 update so I don't know whether I'll be able to flash a custom rom on the G2. Also I've heard that developers are now reluctant to develop for the G2 because of this?
So please suggest what should I buy. Should I get the nexus 5?
G2 will get lollipop update .... That will change ui to that of g3. ...
Also since ur usage is above moderate ... G2 will be better..... my choice would be g2 it suits ur need better
G2 = bigger battery
N5 = updates
And as said above it will get the g3 ui but i heard somewhere that it apparently lags a lot...
That would be it
I don't think anyone can or should decide which phone you should buy. Looking at your list I think it should best for you to decide what you want most from your phone.
I personally have to charge my N5 once a day, sometime twice depend on the usage.

Than you for your reply, but I figured out that much by reading the spec sheet of the phones. You're stating the obvious. What I really wanted to know is how the nexus performs. Since you are on this thread, I assume that you have a Nexus 5. What I want to know is how does the battery hold up with your usage. Please elaborate on your usage. Will I be able to get a day out of the nexus with my usage?

I agree that I will be the one finally deciding the phone. But I really value you opinions. They will ultimately help me decide. You say you charge you phone once or twice in a day. What is your usage pattern? How many hours do you get out of a single charge? Can I get the usage I mentioned in my first post out of a single charge?

Again. all of this is subjective. Depends on what all apps you've installed and how you've setup your phone. With your usage pattern, it will be slightly difficult for you to pull this off.
The same usage patterns will differ from person to person as it depends on a lot of variables.

I second this! I'm usually around charger at all times so, battery life doesn't really hurt me much. But, when I know I won't be around a charger, I do carry a powerbank in my backpack!
I am currently running the newest android 5.0 dev preview, and since installing it my battery life has improved drastically. And android 5.0 has a battery saving mode that kicks on at 25,20,15,10, or 5 percent, you choose what percent to set that at. I am a power user to the extreme. I really mean extreme. I have nfc and Bluetooth on all the time, on the web multiple hours per day reading and watching videos, on calls for 1 hour per day. I top off the battery on a wireless charging pad for one hour during lunch, and i leave it on a charging pad overnight. And i get by just fine. But everyones usage will very depending on how you use and set your phone up. I would not let battery life determine my decision if i were you. Look at other features, size, feel, etc. Personally ive had a n5 since launch and i wouldn't trade it for anything at this time.
I had the G2 for a long time. While it was a great phone, with awesome battery life, after now getting a nexus 5 I much prefer this phone even if the battery isn't as good. But its all personal preference. I love this nexus 5.

Sorry i answered to quick. The n5 can give you 2 days if you want but this means that you are on a good kernel (stock or elemental) and on a good rom (stock is the best i think). In this 2 days I dont use data much so the phone is mostly on wifi and i get around 5- 6hrs screen on. I dont dimm the screen i leave it on auto mostly and i have it oveclocked to 2.5. I also cover a lot of browsing in tapatalk, reddit and also in chrome (which became a big batt sucker lately but things are improving). So at least 2hrs in these apps. Also around 20min talk time. All the time i am on 2g with a very good sigbal. My conclusion... It should get you through the day np
Regarding android l people are reporting better battery results
And just to clear it even more. Yesterday i flashed the pa beta 6 build (had enough of L) and left it on the charger through the night. I woke up downloaded a 2gb file via wifi reinstalled a lot of missing apps listened to some music for 30min (i use viperfx which drains the batt even more) and in the end of the day i have a 2hr sot with 12hr standby and 54%. The 2hrs were browsing in bacon, chrome and tapatalk. But this is the first cycle and as you know it needs a bit to settle so battery life gets even better. So in a few days i would expect a 2hr and 30min sot time with the same usage as i had today. This would be it. If you got any more questions just ask
have both these phones in my family... if you get the chance put them side by side.... nexus 5 has a yellow screen
i never notice until i mess with my wife's g2, as my eyes accept the whites on my nexus 5 as normal.

Imo kernel has a very less effect on battery life.... It solely depends on your usage, network and display brightness..
The Nexus has a battery results thread in the general section. How about checking that out. There's hundreds of members battery times already there to review. ?

Since you don't have LTE in your country and you don't do intensive gaming, you might want to consider the Moto G 2014. The battery life on the Moto G will be better than the Nexus 5, and unlike the G2 the Moto G is unlockable and the software will be up to date for a good long while. It also doesn't hurt that the G is like half the price of the N5.

3 of my friends have the 2014 Moto G. I've used it and I must say I was impressed. But there are two major shortcomings of the phone. First the barely over 4GB of space for apps. With ART being the default runtime in Lollipop, Apps will only get bigger in size. Second is the 1GB RAM which limits the multitasking to a certain extent. Also I do play intensive games on my phone, on weekends or on my days off when I'm at home, so there's that. More importantly I don't know how the Moto G will hold up over the course of 18-24 months
If someone has no interest in big graphics games, or any CPU intensive activities... And doesn't care about having the "best" phone out there..... The G seems like the best bang for your buck deal out there. ?

Questions about the S6 before buying

Hi all, I'm considering buying a Galaxy S6 and I'd like to ask about how the device is holding up. I've heard that out of the box it's good, but lag and poor battery life start to set in within days. Is this true?

No lag at all after a week, fastest phone ever owned (I came from Note 4, Nexus 6 and Iphone 6). Battery for me is a really bad and also the reception.
No issues with lag when I owned the phone but battery life was shocking when comparing to an iPhone 6 - and that isn't even best of class!

Hmm, define shocking? Also what's everyone's SOT?
I'd describe myself as a medium user, use 2 to 3 hours every day, mostly on WiFi, will it survive a whole day?

I would say I'm the same in terms of use. The phone dropped 30% in about an hour and half worth of constant browsing... I always have a charger around so I've not been in a position where it's run out or run really low.
I switched from a Nexus 6 mostly because the N6 was too big and I loved the camera on the S6. The S6 is just as fast (if not faster) than my N6 w/ Faux kernel. I'm getting similar battery life/SOT. My S6 is completely stock aside from some frozen apps/bloat.
Not the OP but I am thinking about S6 but scared of low battery life.
Appreciate the info so that would be equal to about 5 hours continual Browsing.
At low indoor brightness maybe 25% and on LTE - is that about what you get ?
Some vague " Pro Reviews" suggest more but they seem to use non real world tests...
no problems with the battery life for me. I usually get around 4.5 - 5 hours screen on time with 16-17 hours total time. It takes about and hour to charge from 10% to 100% I have T-mobile service so I had to turn off wifi calling and VoLTE. Those were big battery drains. It has good standby times too. I usually charge it to 100% then unplug it before i go to bed. I wake up and the phone is at 99% or 98%.
Also i leave the auto brightness on, bluetooth on, location is gps only, google location reporting off, google now off.

This question is very difficult to answer, because everyone's usage is different. If everyone replied, you would get very confusing answers saying how good / bad / the same battery life is compared to some other unknown benchmark.
The answers would largely be useless because we don't know what you mostly or generally use your phone for, compared to how others use their devices...
Please apply this logic to all device / software / kernel / ROM combinations

Stock everything. Somewhat light user. 2:30SoT at most.

Hi just wanted to share my battery life experiences with my nexus 5 so far as I have recently bought one and have had the phone nearly a month now. My last phone was the 1st gen moto g which is said to have pretty good battery life and the common theme for the nexus 5 is that is that is had bad battery life. In moss cases i am matching or beating my moto gs battery life with the same or harder use and ive been getting 4 hours + sot mainly and recently i have been getting 5 and half hours sot every day for over a week now.

So the above replies basically prove my point. How are they really useful for you?
- "Somewhat light user. 2:30SoT at most."
Exactly how does this user define "somewhat light" usage...and how does that even compare to how you use your phone...
- "4 hours + sot mainly and recently i have been getting 5 and half hours sot every day for over a week now"
Also doesn't say how they use their phone
SOT is a very crude approximation of battery life. Without context, comparisons are largely useless. You ask for 'heavy use to normal', but there is no definition of light / 'normal' / heavy use, because it varies so much depending on the user...
You could get hundreds more replies, all with different answers. Very few will be relevant to what you may or may not achieve if you bought and used the same phone.......
Right before I replaced my Nexus 5 with a Nexus 5X I was getting about 2 hours 30 minutes SOT with ~12 hours off charger at best on my Nexus 5.
That was good cell signal(either light green or dark green bar in battery details like 90% of the time), brightness at like 20%, wifi all but an hour a day, no games, no video(streaming or local), no music(streaming or local), no GPS, location on battery saving. only one Google account syncing with most options off and no Bluetooth. Pretty much just browsing and Facebook app to get that 2 hours 30 minutes. It was awful.
Nexus 5X now and I'm getting about 1 hour SOT more with about the same total time off charger which isn't much better than what my Nexus 5 got when it was brand new.

Battery on the regular Note 10

I know its too early to tell yet, but id be really interested to hear how the battery is fairing up, I have the S10+ atm and really like the smaller Notes form factor, seems the perfect size for me. Ive compared my phone to the Note and it does feel like a downgrade in a few area's, but yeh really interested in the battery really. Thanks.

Battery life is mediocre at most, maybe 1 full day with medium use, nothing exceptional.
Yea I bought it. Was expecting a little more from it battery. I knew this would be an issue going into it but did t realize it would be so bare minimum.
I purchased the regular Note 10. I'm only on day 3. I'm happy with the battery life. The 1st day I used it I got between 5.5-6 hours SOT and that was mostly WiFi. I charged it and took it off the charger at 2am to see how it drained overnight. I woke up and it was at 95% after being idle for 7 hours. I went to work with the phone and my stats from yesterday was 4.5 SOT with almost 24 hours being off the charger.
I think I use the phone pretty regular. Most of my user is from YouTube and Netflix. With yesterday's use I watched the 1st half of the Jets vs Saints.
So far I think its a little better then Pixel 3. Thanks to my recent increased use and Pixel 3 I started freaking out and plugging in charger all the time, need to go back to normal use where you unplug in the morning and plug back in before bedtime.
Here are some screen shots of my user of the regular Note 10. I'm at almost 16 hours off the charger. It's 9:20pm here. The battery life is better than my S10. I'm going on vacation tomorrow, depending how the photos are for me trip will determine if this phone is a keeper. So far I'm happy.
Thanks for everyone's replies, I'll wait a bit until I bite the bullet and thats if I do. I'm happy with the s10+ battery, obviously it won't be as good as that but I'll wait to hear more info on it. Cheers.

Here is a comparison with mixed usage on both Notes https://youtu.be/IrX0rp_Bnbw
Iam feeling the same way. I have pulled the trigger on the plus model mainly because i got it at a good price, and for the bigger battery plus i kinda feel that it's the real note 10 and the smaller version just seems like a downgrade.
Iam having some regrets now though after handling both in person. I just much prefer the size of the smaller note 10 and iam telling myself that the battery should be good enough to last a full day which is all we need really. Expandable storage isn't an issue as 256gb is more then enough for most users (certainly for me)
Iam now tempted to return my plus model when it arrives even though deep down i love that on paper it's technically the superior device. I wish the smaller note had a bigger battery, quad HD screen and the depth sensing camera.
If they had of just made one model somewhere in the middle in terms of size with maybe a 6.5 screen it would have been perfect but oh well.
It's ironic too that most ppl love the idea of a bigger screen but how many of us actually take advantage of that and make use of it. Most of us use our phones to communicate with each other so why do we even need bigger screens? Nice to look at but that's kinda it or am i wrong?

Ehh media consumption? Many people play games too.
Well I couldn't wait any longer and have the regular Note 10 coming tomorrow. I still have my S10+. I just hope the battery doesn't spoil it for me. With my S10+ I never worry about the battery because its never let me down. But I love the size of the Note 10. Like alot of people have said its just a shame they had to strip it down so much compared to the Note 10 plus. Anyway I have 14 days to compare. I'm really excited to see how i get on, hope its not a let down. If it is then I'll wait on the S11 or even the next huawei phone. I had the Huawei Mate 20 pro just before the S10+ and it was great phone. I think I just like to try new things.
Best I've got yet
Image didn't show but it was
6hrs 21min SOT
14hr 8min on battery
That's not too shabby

What i mean is that there are a lot of people that crave a bigger screen but dont even take advantage of it when they have it! Some people dont need a bigger screen but want it anyway imo!

I don't have an image to post but I have gotten similar SOT and standby battery life as you have. I've been able to nearly squeeze 6.5 hours of SOT and got over 24 hours of standby time. I would get better if I didn't keep locations services on full blast all the time plus I have a few survey apps running at all times which also use location/data services so that dings my battery. If you aren't using those things it'll likely be even better. I am totally fine with this battery life.

Wow that's great. I keep Bluetooth active for my gear s3 but not location. What kind of settings are you using?
I have an exynos standard note and like the S10/S10+ before it I would describe battery as acceptable but IMO below par. What bugs me is that it drops at quite a steady rate just sitting there doing nothing, goes from 100 to 99% within a few minutes of coming off charge and continues on from there.
Overall on my Note 10 exynos, the battery is really good. You have to put apps you dont want running in the background to sleep.
AOD I set to tap to show + aodNotify app to wake it up with incoming notifications + edge lighting. Power savings mode when at 50%. Mostly on wifi, no gaming and some light youtube usage.
