TBH very disappointed

Hi
Have had this phone for just a day.
Been struggling to make up my mind whether I want to get it because of the limited memory.
But finally decided to go ahead because it has good reviews on its performance and battery life.
No complain about the performance, but the battery life?....
Played Tripple Town for just about one hour and 30 mins and the battery goes down from 66% to 35%, the majority of which is comsumed by the screen.
So here is where I am. 5 h 47 m on batter, 32% left, 69% of the power drain is because of the god damned screen.
Seriously HTC, how can you manage to get so screwed up with such a decent processor.
you get rid of the removable battery, ok, nowadays the battery lasts reasonably long.
you get rid of the Micro SD card and force us to use the rubbish dropbox. 50GB 1 Yr cost $99. Why don't spend that money to get us a decent bigger memory? But ok I want the performance, I am willing to give up a bit of space for that.
But Finally SUPER AMOLED. Seriously, what kind of dump decision is this to fit a more-than-a-year old technology to such a decent new processor?? when we know all the bad thing about this screen.
It alone kills all the power efficiency the 28nm processor can offer us.
So now this phone's battery cannot out perform (when you are actually using it) neither of my previous phones: Dell Streak and Atrix. Don't tell me I have to compare the battery life by switching off the screen and just let them sit there.
I am very disappointed. very disappointed.
This will be the last phone I buy from HTC.

It sounds like you don't know about how to manage phones.
You prob was running lots of applications at once and brightness all the way up it still won't go from 66% to 35% sounds like a bad unit you have.

I use anrdoid assistant to kill process once an hour.
There is very unlikely this is a bad unit. Nowadays these manufacturers control the production quality very good that the chance I get a bad unit is probably as low as winning some lotto.

For starters, your device is BRAND NEW so battery will take about a week or so to break it in, just be patient. Also, killing tasks will only end up using more resources since Android will most likely just start them back up once it gets the chance. Run your battery down the first couple of days and charge it overnight and you will start to notice it getting much better.

Kill Process runs only once an hour. So during the time I was playing, it probably just ran once. I doubt it will cost much power at all.
I understand it needs time for the battery to warm up. But even with that taken into account. it is not looking good. It reminds me the suffer that Desire caused my friend.

Hopefully this doesn't turn into a bigger issue; keep us posted!

sorry mate but this is just stupid. first of all the battery meter is not calibrated in a new phone meaning the reported battery state is not accurate. you have at least to charge the phone once to 100% and discharge it fully to calibrate the 2 extrem states. before that everything displayed is just a rough approximation. at the first discharge i had ~20% left and the phone was down to 0 in just some minutes of heavy use. after 2 cycles i get ~-10% for an hour of heavy use. so stop crying and give the phone some day's to adjust

Well I hope jodue is right: the battery needs time to fix itself.
I will give it a week to see whether things will improve. If not I will go to store to get a new one.
I have been using Android Assistant for my Streak and Atrix. It turned out to be just alright.
Anyway I will remove it and see how it goes.
Ppl have wrong idea that AMOLED is more power efficient. I remember reading a review some time ago on battery life of smart phones. It tested a number of phones and the outcome is that actually on average the AMOLED (at that time there wasn't SUPER AMOLED yet) devices last less than others.

This is the most stupid thing one can do. The processes will likely be restarted by the OS and you consume more power than you would have consumed by letting android do his things as designed.
Google itself suggests not to do it. Even the most honest task manager apps suggest not to do it. (e.g., http://android.nextapp.com/site/systempanel/doc/autokill ).
Anyway, before judging battery life wait few days. I own a One X, and battery life improved suddenly after few recharging cycles. ;-)

About the display. I readed somewhere in this or X forum, that:
1. LCD does consume less power, but for X version, since its bigger screen, it takes more
2. AMOLED screen power consume depends on what it have to display (colors). Black/dark colors need less power to be shown while white takes the most power...

This. Many people don't know/forget about this. Using a dark theme on apps you use most on an AMOLED phone can save a lot of juice, much more than all those stupid Juice Defender/task killer/manager apps can ever hope to.

You cannot ask all the website to go dark background can you?
Ppl use the phone to do different things. Games, Browing internet... thats the whole point, the phone should perform consistantly for all tasks, not just looking at dark home screen. HTC hasn't even figure this out yet??

in browser-setting you can invert white background/black background

no battery issues here
No battery issues, with slightly higher than average use (downloading loads of apps, playing some games, using google maps and a half hour driving nav and some music lsitening) over the first few days I've averaged 24-36 hours which I'm pretty happy with.
There are a few software things I don't like though
First, I miss having settings in the notification tray, it's one less tap of the screen. Also, the tweaked recent apps list seems pointless, you have to flick from one to another... the Stock android 4 recent apps scroll is much better, it let's you see/do more with less interaction. I also noticed a bug where the wireless signal will appear as null in the notification bar but if you view the the details in settings it says that the wireless signal strength is excellent!
Don't let any of this put you off though it really is a great phone and feels great in the hand... CM9 may rescue all!

Have the One S now, arrived a short while ago. The most annoying thing is that a stock device only has 9GB of that 16GB free when you get it.
This is nuts, I will not be using dropbox, there are many nefarious reasons why HTC want people to use dropbox or any cloud storage, this does not work well while I am roaming folks. This is not good for a business phone, I maybe sticking with my DesireHD.

Its sad, that many ppl who consider themselves technophiles do not even understand the battery of their devices.
ANY device with a modern battery should be initially charged overnight or 7-8hrs at least even of the little green light tells you it is all OK after 4 hrs. Do that, and give it a week to break in and I assume there won't be anything to complain about anymore.
Somy link to a decent site discussing these battery care tips and characteristics should be auto-pinned to each new device subforum cause the first complaints are ALWAYS about the battery life it seems...

Thoughts on the Verizon G5 so far?

I took advantage of the BOGO offer from Verizon and got two LG G5 at Costco. I've been using my phone lightly, but I can't help but complain about the major issues that gets everyone else talking: Battery life.
I see other people have screenshots of achieving 6-7 hours of SOT, but I'm seeing nowhere near that. The most SOT I can see is having 3 hours before hitting to a depleted battery. Occasionally as well, the phone feels pretty hot to touch when it idles or have some fair amount of usage. Even right now I have it inside a thick, bulky protective case, and i can feel the heat from the back. Is it the SD820 or is there something off?
Just to make a comparison, I have been using the Sony Xperia Z3v for a year and a half with Verizon since its release and it's a great all around phone. I usually achieve 5 hours of screen on time or even more depending on how heavy I've used it. Waterproof, dual front facing speakers, 20.7 MP camera (although very outmatched by the G5's), and the power saver absolutely works. What I mean by that is that when the power saver is on in the G5, nothing seems to load at all.
So the overall question is, how is this phone for everyone? I absolutely love the camera, but the battery drainage and overheating is an issue for me. I've had thoughts about exchanging for the S7 Edge since it's pretty much a direct upgrade of my Xperia, but I'd like to see what the G5 can really offer. Oh and, how long is it until I get the extra G5 accessories from doing that bundle deal? Thanks.

You know I've noticed peoples complaints about that but to be honest I think its just certain phones that had these issues. I don't know how but mine hasn't been hot since I first set it up. My battery life lasts me a full 8 to 10 hours depending on if I do too much gaming or YouTube. Those are my biggest battery abusers. But I made sure to deactivate the bloatware Verizon wanted to install. I've had a good experience with mine. The only time I've been mind boggled was when out of the blue chrome would cause the phone to freeze up till I reset chrome. Other than that my device has been running so smooth.

I've been one of the people complaining about battery life. In the first week or so that I had my phone, battery life was miserable. I need to be completely honest here though. After getting into my second week of using this phone, my battery life has greatly improved. In my honest opinion, I think it needs about a good week to 'settle' or 'break in'. I've done nothing different done I set my phone up and I have deleted any apps or anything. I don't know if this is the case for anyone else or not.

I like the phone a lot. It is fast and everything works well.
The only things that I want improved are
1) Screen brightness adjustment. Too dark in dimly lit areas and too bright in normal room lighting.
2) Battery Life. This is a strange one. Some days I have really good life, but sometimes the standby use it high. Google Play Services sometimes eats a lot of battery. I have to reboot to get it to stop. There are also people saying that being on wifi causes more drain. I thought this was not true for me, but I am rethinking. It may be higher when I am at home and on wifi.

So far, I've yet to achieve substantial screen on time. It's really strange, I was having my phone used from 330 to 830 tonight, and it went from 100% to 45% with only 50 minutes of screen on time. WiFi and mobile data off, and I wasn't taking a lot of pictures.
One thing strikes me is the Held Awake/Doze clarified by GSam. That's eating the most battery, what exactly is it?

Honestly, I'm not positive. Make sure in your display settings, though, that you have 'screen always on' turned off.

I haven't been able to figure out why sometimes GSAM shows very little held awake with the phone deep sleep for a majority of the time and sometimes the held awake is almost the entire time since the phone has been unplugged. It seems that if the phone gets into the held awake state that you can get out of it by rebooting, at least it seems like that to me. I have not had enough time to come to firm conclusions on this. I am pretty sure that the held awake has something to do with Google Services or Play Services. It would be great if we can get root and limit the wakelocks from these. Just have to wait on that.

Pretty solid compared to the G4. No heating issues, battery lasts longer as well. I'm at 25%, 11h 7 min on battery 2hr 53min screen on time.

I average 14.5 hours total, 3.5 screen on time. I have noticed turning wifi off when I'm not using it saves a pretty decent amount of battery, which is odd.
I'm not upset with the battery life or anything, it's better than my S4 and G4 were, but if the S7 really lasts 7 hrs with screen on.... i don't know. I have another week to decide on restocking. I do love how quick it is, it's beautiful, feels great in the hand, and the option of removable battery.
I like this phone, and while it is better than the G4 in every way (very buggy, lag, missed taps, etc), I now get paranoid about any tiny bug on this thing and wonder if a Galaxy would be more reliable.

My first full charge I got 45 hours of battery life with 4 hours of screen on time. However that was before I had all my apps reinstalled and that 48 hours with 4 hours SOT included reinstalling all of my apps. Screen brightness on auto the entire time.
Since then I've only been getting 4 hours of SOT with 24 hours battery life. That's only 4 - 6 hours more of total time on an no more SOT than what my 2 year old LG G3 was getting.
LG skimping on the battery was a mistake.

Is Mate 9 battery actually rubbish? Honest thoughts please

Background: I use my phone I'd say medium use. Clash of clans, videos and photos browsing, emails, whatsapp. But i hate to put anything off so 4G location bluetooth everything always on. My note 4 has been amazing with its removable battery allowing me to use a phone in this way amd has revolutionised the enjoyment i get out of it. No more switching on and off bluetooth or gps. No worries in the world. Now i need a new one with a big screen and decent enough cam and the only option with removable battery is the LG V20 which to be fair looks a decent phone. However I also see the Mate 9 and whilst it doesn't have removeable battery it has a sensible screen res and a 4000mah battery meaning it should last a full day no worries. And I prefer the faster Kirin 960 and the bokeh camera setup.
The issue: i was on the verge of ordering it when I came across techzillas 1 month review where basically trashes the battery. Yes he's a heavy user but he's comparing it to other phones which do better with his same use.
I don't understand. Is it his firmware? Has the issue been sorted? Is the battery not that great afterall? Id be buying from wondamobile so id be getting whatever international rom they use. Shall I just play it safe and get the lesser V20 if I'm going to keep all things on?

For me it seams​ that with the b156 firmware the battery is not as good as before. But still excellent I use my phone a lot and most of the time I manage a full day with out charging. I get around 8 hours screen time. I never play games on my phone but use it mostly for productivity and browsing. Occasionally I watch some movies , YouTube and listen to tidal.
Most of the time I use very low brightness as I prefer this for reading.

Ah.. I'm new to this of concept of SOT. I don't know how it works. I can't imagine anyone sitting there staring at their phone literally for 8 hours! I work in the day and use it every now and then there, then when home when the wife isn't having a spazz at me for daring to go on the phone I use it now and then for using Kodi remote and youtube etc... I don't know how much screen on time that'd equate to.
Do you keep all things like bluetooth and GPS and 4G on or do you have to be careful with it like with all my old phones in order to get a full day? With my Note 4 as I say a breath of fresh air that I could keep everything on and just change battery once I got home.

Everything is on, during the day I mostly use 4G. The reason I get between 6 and 8 hours is because I have to do a lot of emailing and maintaining appointments etc for my work and blackberry hub is so good in emailing (mush better than the outlook my company uses) I use my phone for that instead of my laptop. Also I do lots of reading both work an pleasure related.
If i have slow days I can manage two days on one charge easily. In short the mate 9 has an excellent battery. I'm never thinking about the battery as I did with my old phones it seems to be even better than my old BlackBerry Passport

It's the best battery life of any phone I have used. Mine is on 4g all day with GPS and bluetooth always on.
My previous best phone was the Note 4 that I had to charge every night. I only have to charge the Mate 9 on alternate nights however hard I use it.
I have other issues with the Mate 9, but the battery is certainly not one of them.

Wow ok that's surprising. No idea what this techzilla dude is on about then on youtube. He seems quite an honest and credible chap so I wonder if it's firmware related or perhaps he got a dud.

As above, I'm surprised it's this good after the techzilla trashign of the battery on youtube. You wouldn't know yur firmware would you?
What are your issues with it? I hear low light cam performance isn't excellent but it isn't great with my Note 4 either and I can't imagine it's ever satisfactory with the size of lens you can get on any phone. I'm looking to use the Bokeh effect for nice pics of my daughter, is this bit at least working well?

I'm on L29C432B156. I haven't noticed any loss of battery life after two upgrades.

I think I have to most recent one. All I can think of maybe the guy plays allot of games or has some rogue app on his phone eating all the battery life. In any case most reviews are positive about the battery so if one dude that dislikes it does sound like an isolated incident.

Yeah the more I look into it the more I think this is the case.
He seems like a nice decent likable chap who I'm assuming doesn't have a bias either way. But according to his "heavy use", when people say they're getting much better battery than his alleged figures he defines in his comments his heavy use as:
" i stream music from Spotify, watch YouTube, i have 5 email accounts syncing constantly, i get around 1000 emails an hour, 7 to 800 Telegram msgs an hour, fb,twitter, instagram, fb msg, /google Plus, snapchat, youtube studio, surfing the web, a couple of hrs phone calls, text messages, XDA, 500 Whats App msgs per Hour. This is how i test batterty life, and for me the Mate 9 can't deliver more than 6hrs SOT"
All I can say to that is WOW! Who on earth links five emails, gets 1000 emails AN HOUR, 100s of telegrams whatever they are, 500whatsapp messages PER HOUR (I mean that's one every 7.2 seconds!!!!). with loads of other stuff running and TWO HOURS of calls etc etc.. If doing all that with everything on he's getting 6 hours SOT then I can say I'm mightily impressed with it! Even heavy users wouldn't be be using it that much I'm sure. And if he can honestly say he gets the same SOT with iphones and samsungs with more powerful screens and smaller batteries all I can say is at worst I frankly don't believe it, at best he's got a dud Mate 9 or more likely all the aforementioned phones are awesome and we have nothign to worry about as 6 hrs SOT with a whatsapp message every 7.2seconds and an email every 3.6seconds plus all the other **** running is very respectable.

No Autosync
All apps killed
No calls
15 texts per day max
Packages disabled
1-2 hours of screen use tops
I Got maximum 13 hours. I get up every day at 8am and by 7-745 its nearly dead doing next to nothing. Android will not sleep and samsung refuses to accept its their software. My Mate 9, buds Moto Z play both on tmobile never have issues. he gets 8-9 hours screen time i get 8-9 hours screen time charge once every 2-3 days.
My Settings are EXACTLY the same with the exception of:
BT off when not using my Sony M1000x headphones.
300+ textsPer day.
No calls
Checking FB via Metal for FB
Email in Gmail 5-6 times a day
Camaro Forums via chrome browser
Instagram
Spotify + many more apps
And i never have issues. Granted i exchanged it because the B156/157 idk which one ruined battery. i have a B138 fw now and it works flawlessly. Its pathetic samsunbg phones barely make it through the day even when NOT used. Im dropping samsung and sprint very soon.

If your main consideration is battery life I do not think you will be disappointed.
But for what it is worth I will tell you the points I do not like about the Mate 9.
The vibration is very weak.
The notification light is tiny and almost invisible except in the dark.
The GPS is poor and no good for sports use.
There are various problems with notifications and some email apps don't work properly.
All these problems are discussed in this forum.

Oh.
The GPS worries me - I use GPS a lot for visiting clients, is it not accurate or good enough?
And will the normal gmail app work ok?

And i never have issues. Granted i exchanged it because the B156/157 idk which one ruined battery. i have a B138 fw now and it works flawlessly. Its pathetic samsunbg phones barely make it through the day even when NOT used. Im dropping samsung and sprint very soon.

Strange though because people are saying the B156 one is fine. Opposite to your experience.
Maybe the battery just goes crazy and dies at some point?

I don't understand. Is it his firmware? Has the issue been sorted? Is the battery not that great afterall? Id be buying from wondamobile so id be getting whatever international rom they use. Shall I just play it safe and get the lesser V20 if I'm going to keep all things on?

whatever the reason is i bet every user have diff usage n diff type of apps running in their phone,but all i can say this phone can last me from 7.30 til 11.30pm with everything on(except for BT n NFC) and most of the time i m on 4g,i can get 6-7 hours of SOT with whatsapp,email,telegram heavy chrome browsing,youtubing,xda-ing,some gaming(coc,skyforce).and when i wanted to go tl bed at 11.30 it still have 20% left

The GPS is fine for ordinary driving use, and it gets a fix very quickly. But there are some serious issues that Huawei aren't mending.

Right now I have 89% left, 10 hours active, 33 mins SOT. I think I got 7h SOT yesterday and still 50% left.
Compared to my Note 4 which barely lasts 12 hours, and that's idle time.

Ah i see thanks.
Thats disappointing. I may wish ti get back into cycling and if it cant track my ride accurately it sounds like a dud. How ridiculous! Just as i was about to buy one another problem pops up.
I wonder if huawei just aren't ready for making phones...!

It's a shame, yes. There are of course many good things about the Mate 9. They just let it down on a few things.

my mate 9 gets 9-10 hours of heavy use - granted i have some mods and tweaks

Is the always-on display a power hog for the U11+?

Giving that the plus isn't using OLED, won't the always on display feature be a huge power drain for it? Or the Gen6 super LCD can do local dimming and only lit up the part of the screen where the notification is?
I'm really close to pulling the trigger on this despite having an U11 already. But the new screen, larger battery, features are just too much to pass by.

So you really like that U11 don't you.

Yeah, I think I'm just gonna go ahead and grab it. But I'm a bit curious about the ambient display/always-on that the plus has will be a problem for the battery giving its LCD screen. I know it can be turn off but I just want to get some input from any owner.

No, it's an LCD display and can't do local dimming. In a pitch black bathroom, I can see the backlight on ever so faintly but it's still on. There's an option for that to turn on only when you move the phone which uses a lot less battery, but from the short tests I did earlier the always on display does drain battery noticeably faster.

I measured this for about 6 hours. Although the screen on HTC U11+ is very dark, it still drains battery. The rate is 2% per hour. The phone was idle during those 5-6 hours. I think its not worth it.
The mode I want is "Turn the dimly lit display on when notifications arrive, and keep turning it on every 5 minutes until notifications are acknowledged". Why can't HTC do when LOS can do it?

Somehow i agree with it. After being on Android for almost 5 years with note 2 and Samsung S6 and now moving in to Iphone 8. IOS is just brilliant at standby times. My s6 was horrid in the last few months with battery and i wouldnt dare to step out with anything less than 90% and at times even 100% . So with 4G on all the time and if used the phone for 1 hour including playing lot of pictures and all i knew the battery wont last me more than 4-5 hours. It was a pain to go out with anything at 60-70% battery. However with iphone i can actually go out with 50% and still feel that i can last through 6-7 hours or even more with phone being used for 1 hour or more. I know IOS is restricted but somehow that just works for it. Wish Android could fix it.

That's not a rule, the s6 is known to have ****ty battery.
Android got good with the standby battery, don't judge the whole android system just by using samsung devices.

In the past year I have had an S8, iPhone 7, S7 Edge, OP3T, U11, Nokia 5 (budget phone) and every single on lasted longer than the iPhone lol

I've just noticed after the recent update, maybe it was there from the beginning, that this device has a lot of light bleed around the sides when using always-on feature. However I believe that any light bleeding is a hardware thing not a software thing.
This could be a reason why it drains the battery so much.

Exynos N985F Dismal Battery Life (< 3Hr SoT)

I upgraded from my SD S10 to Note 20 Ultra Dual Sim Exynos couple weeks ago and Im getting dismal battery performance with about 2h35 to 3h15 of SoT, and I noticed the standby drain is pretty bad.
Before judging me: Yes I am fully aware of the whole Exynos 990 v Snapdragon thing, but because I couldnt get my hand on a dual sim N20U with SD so I settled with the exynos version, which I have seen people claiming getting about 5 hours of SoT vs. over 6 hours of SoT on the SD, and I would totally happy with 5 hr considering my usage. But barely getting over 3 hours of SoT is just plain stupid considering the price I paid for it.
I love everything else on the N20U, but having to carry around a power bank all the time is really annoying. Is anyone experiencing the same issue and any luck on fixing this? I am not sure if it is a software issue.
P/S: I attached a couple of screenshots for Battery Usage and Gsam Battery report. I did just reset my phone yesterday to see if the performance improves, no luck. I also did all the battery optimization settings + limit all background usage on all unnecessary app, including facebook and other social media apps..

If i turn off adaptive screen, turn down to minimal resolution and turn on battery saving only the standby drain gets better. The sot stays the same.
Every unnecessary app is in deep sleep, so nothing much more that I can do.
But if you find something out for a solution please share.
Until then I have to carry a powerbank also.
I considered to sell it and buy a pixel 5 , but the Note20U price dropped brutally, so it would be a waste to sell it.

I dont know how are people claiming 5 hours of SoT for the Exynos version. I realized most of the claims were made back when it was running One UI 2.5. Not much reviews on battery life on One UI 3 so I am thinking it is software-related. Waiting for samsung to release 3.1 for N20U.
I use the phone to take notes a lot since I am on the go most of the time. I also do some recreational video editing on the phone and it is serving me well. It is unfortunate that the battery is performing like ****

Main is remaining for more than 10 hours of SOT without playing games, 7 to 8 hours while heavy gaming

Are you on Exynos and on One UI 3? And I noticed you have power saving on, do you leave it on all the time and what are the settings?

Yes it's Exynos android 11 UI3, most of the time on power saving mode, usual settings nothing new screen always 60hrz, window animation .5, apps not in regulars use always on sleeping mode, stop Sync but need apps, stop receiving notification but for used apps, using ad block, standard display mode, wifi throttling, multicore packet schedule and other option can reduce battery consumption

Stop using third party apps speacialy for system tweaks after that use battery calibration to get the best battery consumption, screen shot taken just now

4g owners, is there solution for root android 11?

After a month of using the note 20 ultra 4G exynos 990, I decided to swap it for a 5G snapdragon 865+ version. Got a good deal for trading in my 4G so I pulled the trigger.
Same exact app setup and usage, minimal battery saving tweaking => I managed to get 5+ hours of SoT right out of the bat! One UI 3.0. That's a whole 2 extra hours of SoT on the first day of usage and I believe it's gonna get better over time.
