[Q] Fate of Google Wallet Tap & Pay - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I have been a user of Google Wallet Tap & Pay since it first started. I am currently running it on my Verizon Galaxy S3 with Alliance Rom 22. After all the painful process of getting it to work (NFC Fix, build prop, etc), Google is killing Tap & Pay on all devices <4.4. I'm a fan of Touchwiz roms for some of the features, but I don't want to give up Tap & Pay, especially as new retailers are finally starting to integrate it.
I will need to upgrade to 4.4.2, and there is still an issue with the current S3 NFC chip (NXP) not being compatible with the new HCE. Does anyone know of a fully working ROM 4.4.2, AOSP based, or a 4.3 ROM with this functionality available? Do I simply have to wait for 4.4.3, and lose Tap & Pay until it drops?
Thanks,
Alan

Since Verizon has their own competing product and never supported Google Wallet, I think your chances of having it in any version of Android except by hack, like you currently run it are slim. Its doesn't seem that Google really wants to be in this payment business anyway judging from the very limited market penetration and lack of retailer acceptance.
Host Card Emulation, or HCE is not a new chip, its a new method. It allows Google to bypass carrier rules that prevent an app from accessing something as integral as an NFC secure element. Instead, it would use just NFC safely. This means that Wallet users were no longer limited to Sprint or Nexus devices, so maybe there is a chance. But I see Google's lack of marketing for tap and pay as an indication that they may let it die unless they find more marketing partners.
For more insight into Google wallet fail mode, see this interview with its creators.
http://www.fastcompany.com/3021913/...llet-creators-reflect-on-its-failures-lessons

I agree with everything you just said above.
My question isn't if Google Wallet will be supported - it never has been on Verizon with the GS3, and likely never will.
While HCE does not require a NFC secure element, it currently does not support all NFC chips - there are numerous threads regarding this. Some device manufacturers have added code to make HCE work with the NXP NFC chip in other phones, however Samsung has not done this. The rumor is that 4.4.3 may add this coding.
What I am looking for is the best way to keep my Google Wallet hack options going forward.
If there is expected to be a TW based rom with the elements from 4.4.3 that will allow Wallet to work, I would go with that.
Otherwise, I may as well switch over to an AOSP ROM in the hopes that the next version will allow Wallet to work again. The deadline for the death of tap and pay is 4/14/14, so I'll have to make my decision soon.
Has anyone confirmed HCE working with SGS3 on a 4.4.2 rom? Or are we all dependent on the soon-to-be extinct Secure Element?

There is hope!
There have been some articles in the past few days about mounting evidence of a 4.4.2 update for the US versions of the S3. Both Mashable and JustAboutPhones have printed leaks of the update being in the final testing phase, with possible release in the first week of May.
Both articles quote support for NFC Tap and Pay.
With Verizon, this doesn't ensure we will be able to use Google Wallet Tap and Pay, as I'm sure they will do everything they can to cripple it in favor of ISIS. However, I'll bet code can be ported from a Sprint ROM that will allow a Custom TW 4.4.2 ROM with this functionality.
I hope Beans and the AllianceRom team will be looking at this - I miss my Tap and Pay.
Alan

Tap and Pay was very cool and easy to use. Main reason I rooted my Verizon S3. Lost that ability when I upgraded then soft bricked my phone. Got it back and rooted, and looking for a ROM to load that will support Google Wallet and Tap and Pay...

I've found the link to be able to download the Samsung Pay Beta .apk file but I haven't figured out how to get it to install. Does someone else want to try? I'm stuck on a Samsung S6 Edge running 5.0.2. I wonder if you have to have 5.1.1 to run it.
Korea Link - https://kr.mpay.samsung.com/apk
US Link - https://us.mpay.samsung.com/apk
Here's a download link for the Samsung Pay .apk file I found on the Korean link. It lets me install it on my Samsung S6 Edge+ running android 5.1.1.

I called today and they told me to download the Samsung Plus app from the Google playstore. I downloaded it agreed to the terms and logged in and then inside the app there was a link that said "Join Samsung Pay Beta". So far it doesn't do anything, but it seems promising that it might work tomorrow after the beta has officially begun.

Just seen something today that Samsung Pay will be available on the sprint versions of the S6 and S6 edge. I know android pay isn't far away either. I've used Google wallet for awhile on my Nexus 5 and for the most part it works well

Galaxy S4 Google Edition

The Google edition of this phone looks incredible, although its really expensive. I don't know if its even worth it, when ROMs like AOKP are available. I have a few issues with the idea of buying it or the desire to do so.
When the Google edition comes out, will the device even be able to use the hardware like the IR blaster? Also, will users on the ATT and other models be able to flash the ROM/firmware anyway?
What do you guys think? Are there any other advantages to the Google edition?
Sent from my SGH-I337 using xda premium
No IR support. Rumor has it for 4.3 release supposedly. If you don't have the Google edition you can't install it on none google versions and you won't get updates from Google. However I am sure there will be Dev who port it for the telco vendor versions to work.
That's so strange that they'd even consider selling hardware with components that aren't supported. So besides stock jelly bean (which doesn't even have the features of AOKP), the Google version has almost no advantages? And for more than three times the price? I saw earlier that they're on pre-order on eBay for $850. What's the point? I must be missing something.
Sent from my SGH-I337 using xda premium
This is the point, the Google Edition devices are meant to be developer friendly and showcase stock vanilla android...the IR blaster is something thats proprietary hence no AOSP code is available for it (stock android), drivers/source needs to be released for those components... the Google Edition devices are bootloader unlockeable unlike the ATT version (ours uses a bypass exploit to install custom things which by all accounts has been patched in a future OTA due to be released)....also they come factory sim unlocked...they will get Google Updates first before carrier branded devices, think of them as Nexuses without the Nexus name. I won't be getting a GE S4 as I have a Nexus and will wait for the next Nexus, however I'm excited to see the GE released as it means AOSP code will drop, this will help devs tremendously in fixing issues such as bluetooth.

It's less about the phone itself.
1. Having a stock rom version appeals to many advanced users, such as us on XDA. It has the stock experience, without the nexus line limitations, such as the SD card. It makes their die hard fans happy and most of us are very enthusiastic about it.
2. It is a key strategic move by Google. By allowing other manufacturers to sell "stock" versions on the play store, Google can move ahead and sell Motorola phones from the store without appearing to be biased to their own hardware. They're telling consumers they have options.
Unlike Apple this is what I like about Google. Give me options and let me decide which I want.

Idk about you guys but I find this amazing! I have fallen in love with the ir blaster I wish they would have it in the Google s4

Rumor is Android 4.3 will have native support for IR blasters.
I'd rather have an RF capability though.
I'm in a bind myself of what to do with the Google Edition S4. While I know that with this available to developers, ROMs will become much more stable, but really I'm not interested in that. I want to be able to completely flash my S4 to the Google Edition essentially, the biggest thing being able to receive OTA updates from Google. I imagine just downloading an image of the GE S4 and just flash it with Odin for example, and just go.
Is that realistically something that could happen, or is that just completely out of the question? I'm trying to avoid having to drop $650 on the same phone I already have, but don't want to wait to find out I can't do what I want, then be stuck with another Nexus 4 fiasco, where it's back-ordered for 2 months

Totally in the same boat. I got this S4 last week and I'm already hearing that I'd have to drop $650US for the GE

Personally I would not drop 650 on a phone you already have. You want the Google experience install CM10.1. You want touchwiz and IR you can go back to Samsung ROM. Plus I am sure DEVs will have the image ported to our phones. Its a waste of money imo. I would rather save that money for the new nexus or x phone.

How does google know exactly which devices are "Nexus" devices? Do they send the updates out to a list based on known Nexus/GE IMEIs, or is there something in the ROM that sends a beacon to them asking for the udpates, or?
I'm really hoping I can just flash the GE ROM to my S4 and slip into the update loop like the rest of the Nexus/GE owners.

I can't speculate on how the phone actually gets the ROM update and/or how the almighty Google gods know which device it is, but I do know that when people got their LG Optimus G's running the Nexus 4 software, they were able to pull down OTAs from Google directly.
How many times can the same conversation be had on this site?

What's the point in 4.4 when most phones aren't even on 4.3 yet?

This has always puzzled me since I switched over to Android 5 months ago. I noticed that most carriers don't push the latest update for months to come, if ever in some cases. For example, my SGS4 ATT hasn't been officially updated to 4.3 yet, but 4.4 is being released soon. Its not like as soon as 4.4 is released, everyone can update to it, like iOS. My question is, why is this? What's the point in Android releasing another major update when the majority of non-rooted phones aren't even running their latest update?

It's not googles fault the oems can't keep up. Google even gave them the tools they needed to port software to newer versions of Android. If google took longer to release, that's longer oems would take

I think a big part of it is that Google knows that the people with the know-how will go get 4.4 themselves and start testing/coming up with fixes for bugs and such. Yes, we all do it for advanced features/rooting, but at the same time Google can go look at bug fixes online just like the rest of us can

Simple, most updates are minor and bit by bit remove the "Open" source features of AOSP.
Next android version will include the ability to have custom Messenger app that can recieve SMS. Google will probably replace it with a propietary version that integrates with g+ and other services and end up not support AOSP version. Its only natural because propietary software earns alot more money and google can earn money both from ads and its services.
Yes, android as we know it is being left to die by google.
Also, the thing others said here are correct, OEMs do not have the interest to update or support a device for more than one year, thats their cycle. This adds to android version fragmentation.
Its the same reason there are over 30% of devices still using gingerbread 2.3
Android devices are usually advertised heavily, distributed, supported for 1 year, and abandoned. This goes mostly for midrange devices. Flagships might get special treatment-
Low end devices are never updated to rarely if never updated to new versions. Of course, this policy might differ based on OEM.
LG uisually releases 1 update and thats it. Samsung does 2-3 updates for higher end devices. Dunno about HTC or Sony, but they should be the same.
it may be availble for all device
as far as i know google is planing to bring all android phones under one roof with same os.. they had worked on pusing updates through playstore .. so we may see soon that we are getting our os upgrades directly from playstore
Pipo
Keep an close eye on official release& waiting!
Thank goodness for developers who take the updates and then make far better roms than the carriers could ever do.. These updates are more for the artists that make the art that is the rom, or am I wrong?
M919 running Virgin GP ed. ROM
I think for the moment the answer is you simply don't need 4.4.
If you have 4.1 and up your phone will support all the new apps coming with 4.4, in fact they're already available...
We won't see universal Play Store upgrading for the foreseeable future, because remember, Google wouldn't want the hassle of handling hardware support for every single phone out there, they have enough on their plate with their Nexus line.
The road taken, if you will, probably is for the best, where Google develop their services independently of the platform as much as possible.

The question shall be different: is there any chance for us to get ANY official update.
And the answer seems to be obvious: NO.
That's Sammy's policy. N10.1 was not selling as expected - so let's show its users a middle finger. After being a Sammy's loyal client for almost 10 years - that's the absolute end, as it is the 4th device which was left without serious updates (other than cosmetic ones...) in less than a half-year after debut.

I actually work with a Samsung Solutions Architect, and according to a conference call that I had this morning regarding a beta I am running on the Note 3 and Knox. Samsung is in the final stages of testing with Samsung Knox and the Galaxy Note 10.1, the problem any Carrier branded Note 10.1 has is that IT IS THE CARRIER who says when the updates get pushed out. Samsung has a 4.3 update for "legacy" devices, but with the partnership they have with the carriers ATT, Tmobile VZW and Sprint, the carriers are the ones who are not signing off on the updates. In the case of the Gt-N8013 I have NO clue what the hold up is besides the beta test for knox that I am part of. During the conference call I asked the Director of SEA Knox Development team when this will be brought to the 2012 version of Galaxy Note 10.1 and his reply is they are aggressively working on the update and it should be done soon. Now I know that doesn't mean much but at least it shows Samsung didn't just drop the 2012 version they just "need" more time to test it out. That is actually why I am part of the SEA KNOX BETA that will run the first qt of the new year.

Thats why Sammy shouldnt release so many devices. It costs them more money and more time to update since they have so many devices. I bought this tablet because I thought it was their flag ship tablet that means it would get update faster but I was totally wrong. I wont buy any ****ty tablet from Samsung again.

but the question being asked is somehow different than what u said
what i care most is the "feature pack" presented with the new note! it's my right and i want all of those capabilities on my N8000!
ps: u see? i am not looking for just an update! having waited so long makes me worry if I am gonna get something valuable in return or not!
I'd asked the same question before and got no answers
Basic answer with all upgrades is you may get them . But you have no entitlement to them you never bought them in the first place . Plus at some stage the apps may be ported .

Well I think you have your "right" mixed up with your "want" Samsung doesn't owe you anything for buying the 2012 version of the galaxy note 10.1 they are under no obligation to provide you with the the new features of the 2014 edition. If and I do mean if we get them, then that was mighty nice of Samsung. Otherwise if it is so important to get the new features I suggest porting the rom over to these devices. Don't get me wrong I would like the features as well considering I am the admin for my job and I have deployed 800+ 2012 Galaxy Note 10.1's to our students and staff. I don't remember Samsung saying you get X amount of updates on x amount of years when you buy a device.

Yes, Samsung didnt say anything and it doesnt need to even say anything. But when they chose Android OS they knew that every companies working with Android know that everybody having an android device are expecting to get updates - it is a nature of android. It developes fast.. What do you expect to happen if Apple did the same? "Sorry, but no new ios for u, just buy a new iWhatever?" Even the dumbiest sheep will be lost...
As you probably have seen it in a real life too, Samsung just has too many devices to kerp updated and they still dont stop. Every week they launch a new device, just changed something just a little bit to get a new toy - today it was a some model with a screen size 8.2", tomorrow they launch it again, but it will have a 8.3" screen. On next week they change it a little bit again and it is now called "pro". How can you even think about any updates nowadays!? It's crazy already, they are just flooding the markets!
And what comes to updates, i give a **** what carriers want or not. Remember that people live outside usa too. In Europe most of us dont have any carrier linked, bloatware devices. Like i am using an international version (nordic actually) of N8000, and no carriers. Why isnt this one updated? No need to wait carriers and their bloatware or anything... It is just an excuse. I only hope Samsung has faced the problem they did all by themselves flooding with billion devices. Unfortunately customers are those who pay the price!

[Q] OTA Blues, Ready For A New Direction, Seeking Advice

Hi. I currently use the Samsung Note 2 (Verizon). I have been very pleased with the phone. While I have intended to root the phone (have never rooted a phone before), I never seemed to have the time to sit down and do the required research before jumping into it. The phone is essential to my work, particularly Google Maps, and even more particularly the My Places feature of the previous version of Maps. As many of you may know, the recent OTA update has locked down boot loader security and has also forced users of the old version of Maps to upgrade to the new version. When it rains, it pours. As I understand it, there has not been a workaround discovered for this, and the Note II being an 'older' phone now, rooting and unlocking may be a longer wait than I am prepared for.
This has gotten me so angry and depressed, as I vitally need the old version of Maps for my work. I am disgusted with Google for forcing this change on me. If I could pay $100 for a safe and stable Maps app, I would not hesitate. Google's "free" app has driven most every competitor out of the market, so I really don't see an alternative to the old Google Maps.
I am considering just buying an unlocked Note III, as I am only one year into my contract. I am assuming that I could then root this and put a pre-4.3 stock ROM on it, and that by doing that, then I could have my old Maps back. What do you think? Is this silly? Is there a better way? Advice is much appreciated!
Thanks.

Root?

Who usually works on root for att devices? I know the bootloader is locked but is anyone working on it?
I haven't heard of someone specifically working on it. But they could be working on and keeping it on the DL so they don't get pestered to death.
Now from another thread, user @android-DEP did some research with adb commands here is his post:
android-DEP said:
Finally,i found the slideshow presentation i recently read that was posted online by the NSA, they're the ones implementing SELINUX to work with this KNOX bull****, plus all the other cute names of whatever other misc. technology, SAFE, TIMA.... i'm sure everyone saw the long list of garbage in the About section underneath where it shows the KNOX version.
The whole KNOX thing isn't where the issue is on the locked bootloader on NOTE 4. Since Knox was intended to be used in Enterprise corporate environments where a centralized server can be put in place to manage users devices, tripping that knox bit doesn't necessarily automatically void your warranty. About rooting Samsung KNOX-enabled devices and the KNOX warranty void bit. This is also discussed here, Knox Security & locked bootloader on new firmwares. Reading these 2 blogs was interesting and good info to know because I had a different idea of what this knox business was really all about.
Somewhere I stumbled upon a link to some NSA stuff to find out that the NOTE 4 was their chosen platform that they have thoroughly tested against every security standard in their books and all the new security changes they've implemented have held up to pass with flying colors. So one thing off the top I remembered clearly was that it is no longer possible to write to the /system partition within in domain or by any anything other than in recovery. Since previously the SELINUX was set to PERMISSIVE mode, there was wiggle room to work with whereas now it's set to ENFORCING by a mandatory device policy which simply denies all attempts and requests made to get access to the /system partition.
I was able to use adb to push busybox as well as the su binary files to /data/local/tmp directory where the shell has read\write privileges which let me use chmod 777 busybox, and the same thing for su. Then you can use them by first typing in ./busybox and whatever function\command you want busybox to perform. I spent last night and all of today just trying every single command and combo and variation of using busybox with just the su binary, I even installed supersu.apk and superuser.apk and kingroot.apk, tested a few dozen different mod strings variations using towelroot, I even decompiled a simple apk application to declare permission for request_superuser because using the "pm grant com.testapp.something android.permission.REQUEST_SUPERUSER", according the command usage instructions is supposed to grant the app whatever permission it's requesting that isn't by default granted by the system originally. So if an app is requesting some specific permission that was denied, "theoretically" that command should grant the privilege to the app so it would be able to run normally, but it just denies installing the app on the device no matter what I've tried.
Then I reread this statement from the NSA site on this exact phone

So I doubt my futile efforts would be any match against whatever the NSA has signed off on. This task would require someone that has a far deeper understanding of manipulating the coding to try exploiting any known vulnerabilities like geohot or comex or djrbliss... I really doubt there will be root available for the at&t variant anytime soon, I'm on the verge of trading this phone for a galaxy S5 with someone just because the S5 is rootable and I never knew how much I relied on having root permissions, it's frustrating to not be able to do so many things with the phone that I never realized required root

It's for the note 4 and correct me if I'm wrong but if it works for the note 4 it should work for the note edge as well.... right?

Thanks for the links. I should have just stayed patient and ordered from tmobile. I wanted the phone so bad I went to att without even considering this would be a problem lol.

I did the same thing. I ended up returning the att model and bought the T-Mobile version. Att is always a struggle with the locked bootloaders. Could be awhile before root comes. I can tell you getting the T-Mobile one was well worth it. Root is great and it runs smoother than the att one. Could be an illusion but it seems a lot better.
