I'm rooted, and use Xposed framework and App Ops. I've denied a lot of apps the Keep Awake permission for a lot of apps, including Google+, but last night, something weird happened. The app kept the phone awake for 8.05 hours, out of the total 8.37 hours the phone was on the battery.
I don't even have auto backup of photos turned on. What's interesting is that the app kept the phone awake despite me denying it the permission to do so. How the hell is that even possible?

:/ I had to leave for office at the time. Battery being down to half before you even begin your day is very annoying. Google doesn't get enough **** got its highly inefficient retarded piece of **** battery draining apps

Why don't you just plug your phone in when you go to bed? That way you always wake up with the battery at 100%

That doesn't solve the issue at hand; regardless, I mostly plug the phone in. This time though, the battery was around 85-90% iirc.

I also have this problem.. Don't know what's going on with g+
Try clearing the cache and data for Google+
The recent updates (March 12th and 17th) caused this recent keep awake and data usage issues with G+. Especially if you're using the auto backup feature in the photos app. Hope they'll address it soon

What's ridiculous is that even after denying the Keep Awake permissions, the app kept the phone awake. It basically ignored the rules of an app with superuser privileges. Even now App Ops doesn't know that G+ kept the phone awake.

Try disabling all Google app syncing except for things like Gmail.

Well denying the keep awake permission on an app does not mean that the app cannot trigger another process, which is not directly from the app, to keep the phone awake

G+ sync was disabled. I didn't even agree to G+ asking if I want to keep my contacts up to date, so there's no reason for it to do any goddamn thing in the background. Just ****ty and stupid on Google's part. Not sure if they do this on purpose.

Pretty sure they do. Google+ isn't the only Google app to have this problem (past, present, or future). It's purposeful or gross incompetence.
The same thing is apparent with syncing. There doesn't appear to be a timeout on syncing operations. It will try for minutes at a time to sync when it isn't even connected to data. No reply from the server after 15 seconds should kill all syncing for at least 10 minutes before it tries again.
I guess there are never any data connection issues at Google HQ. Must be 100% reliable.
I've been whining about these exact problems for over a year. Don't get your hopes up.
Thank God for Greenify I guess. Paid for the donate version and it's coming in handy to prevent other apps from waking up G+ more than anything else.

go through your phone again, set it up properly, and you wont have these issues. its not googles fault, its the users fault.

What do you mean properly?! How is it the user's fault if a Google app is misbehaving, and has been known to misbehave?

"known to misbehave" is depending on how the user sets up their device and settings. ive never had google apps misbehave on me, ever. now granted, with kitkat google hid items that should have been put out more obviously. like instead of going to the main phone settings for all your settings, theres also a google settings app in the app drawer. they need to be gone through as well, and have crap disabled. but be sure that you go into your location settings, google location reporting, and disable location history and location reporting. and turn the mode to battery saving. itll still tell you your location, but your battery will be better off. also, go to wifi settings, press the 3 dots on the bottom right, advanced, disable scanning always available(this will also help out your battery).

I don't know where to begin, especially seeing that you are actually knowledgeable.
Google Settings has existed since when, JB, if I'm not mistaken. It's not a KitKat addition.
I've disabled Google Now, Location Reporting, Location History and GPS. GPS only comes on when I'm using Maps, and gets turned off automatically as soon as I exit Maps. I've set up Llama to do this. Anyway, Location stuff is not related to Google+ at all, but still, I'm clarifying it just because you brought it up.
Wi-Fi settings are again not related to the issue at hand, and I'm not complaining about any drain they're causing because I actually need to have it on all the time for seamless switching between mobile data and Wi-Fi.
So you're telling me I've set my phone up wrongly and defend Google, but don't bring up G+ and instead talk about Location and Wi-Fi settings? That aside, how is it even possible to set up a phone wrongly? All that one is required to do is login and that's it - Google shouldn't be whoring out the battery no matter what.
Heck, I've disabled G+ sync, Photos sync, Photos backup, G+ contacts update feature, and denied it the permission to keep the phone awake, cut three wakeup paths.

So I have my N5 for a couple months now, running stock ROM with stock launcher, rooted with Xposed tho.
Today while sitting around with some friends it made a sound I never heard before, sounds like some kind of notification but no notification was found... I open the lock screen and there's nothing. Then, while I holding it and looking at it the sound beeped again... My friends thought I was an idiot but then it happened again!
3 times in about 2 minutes and I have no idea what it was, there was no indication of anything on screen or in the notification area and I never heard that notification sound before...
Is there any way to find out what that was? Or any place that shows exactly which notification sounds are configured? Cause this is having me worried...
It's been a couple of hours since then and it hasn't happened again.
It was me, I was trying to contact you...

I had this also before while using a rooted S3. I can hear a faint sound but no notification, although at one point I did notice a toast notification fading. So assumed it was one of the apps I installed that requires root (probably greenify at that time) that is kicking in and that supersu was giving the toast notification.
maybe change the notification method on the supersu you are using or check the logs
I haven't encountered this on my Nexus as I'm not rooted

My wife's GNex was doing this a while back. It drove me CRAZY! I figured maybe it was an app that she installed, but she claimed she didn't install any new apps. So then I thought maybe it had something to do with the phone even though it was completely stock. Then, when she got a G2,she installed all her apps, and it made that same sound AGAIN! I took her phone and tried to figure it out.
Long story short, it was her Yahoo email app. In the settings, it was set to not show notifications in the statusbar. However, it was still set to make a notification sound. I don't know who would make an app that would allow you to hide the notification, but still PLAY THE DANG NOTIFICATION SOUND! Anyways, it sounds like you may have an app installed that behaves the same way?

This would make sense but I didn't install anything lately and am generally very very aware of anything I put on my phone and after that I greenify almost everything...
The only thing I found possible is that I seem to have forgotten to greenify Zedge and when I checked processes last night it had a service running. Maybe that was it? I greenified it after that of course.
Anyone know of a notification sound Zedge makes? I found nothing in settings.
Maybe it was a NFC chip close to some readable tags (like credit cards with tap to pay possibilities)? Check how it sounds...it can be it ...

Stepback! We got a winner!
After you said that I remembered that the phone was sitting on my wallet at the time, tried it again and there's that sound again. So now I know what it is generally but why does it beep? Simply to let me know that there's a NFC card around? Does it read it? Kinda uncool that it reads my credit card when I didn't ask it too...
Yep, it reads it, but only some common data, nothing to worry about . You can check what it reads by installing some NFC app like NFC tools.

Do you have fb messenger installed? For me, it does the ghost notifications. I chat on fb on pc, then I stop. About 1-2 hours later my phone get ghost notifications.
I chat again on fb on pc, then i stop chating on fb. Start using my phone after I stopped chatting on fb on pc. After 10-20 mins I get the notifactions for incoming messages on fb chat on phone even after I replied to them and seen all of them on pc. These notifications disappiers as soon as the notification sound goes off

Installing Nine email for Exchange and removing the Exchange account from the phone makes Smart Lock start working again.
I do have exchange but do not have a pin lock requirement. When home, I often set lock screen to none, and use a pattern lock when I go out as a matter of habit. With pin lock requirement turned on, I would not be able to use pattern lock or set lock screen to none.

Yep. You're right. That wouldn't cause an issue.
I have also heard of folks who had to set 3 or 4 trusted places around their home for it to work. Say, your house, neighbor on the left, neighbor on the right...etc.
Hmmm... today at work, it actually worked. Once. it took me a while to figure out why and perhaps why it doesn't work most of the time.
If I let my phone time out, or use the power button to turn off the screen, it appears to work..
But if I use the button (app called screen off) that turns off the screen immediately and locks the phone it doesn't then work when I turn the phone back on.
I use the screen off button all the time as it is much easier than reaching around for the power button and I like to turn off the screen before I put it in my pocket or even put it down since it is less difficult to mess something or activate something when handling the device.
Now that I know what is going on... I can possibly talk to the developer about it to see if there is a "fix". Or just hitting the power button instead.
Note I typically hold the phone in my left hand and my fingers are lower on the device to balance it better.
Damn. I forgot Greenify does the same thing. Glad you finally figured it out.
When it worked the first time I wasn't sure what was happening as I had never seen it work before. It wasn't until I got a desk phone call and it timed out on it own and did it again, that I made the connection. I actually forgot it was still setup.

-Scroll down and click "download and install" (yellow button)
-When download is finished click on it to install the APK

Package disabler pro - Replacement app for Titanium Backup's "freeze" feature for non-rooted phones.
-Open the playstore
-Search for "Package disabler pro"
-Don't be cheap, pay the 2 dollars. It's worth every penny.
-Install the app and run it.
-When you open the app it will look like this:
-I can sit here all day and go through the hundreds of entries. Or you can just import the .xml that I made. I researched every single package that I disabled individually and then tested for weeks to make sure there were no glitches or missing features. **WARNING** disabling certain services or apps can cause you to have to wipe out your phone and restore the firmware. The ones in my .xml will not harm your phone. If you want to experiment beyond what is in my .xml just be sure to research before disabling anything. Also I may have disabled apps that you use so you may want to scroll through what is disabled to make sure I didn't turn anything off you want.
-In the top right click the three dots
-Click "Import from xml" (this is for the T-mobile variant, but will work for all Note 5's)
-Select my xml ("disabledSAFE.xml") and click import (it's attached to this post as a .zip file)
Speed up all animations.
-Go to settings>about device
-click build number 7 times to enable developer options
-Go to settings>developer options
-Scroll down until you see "window animation scale".
-You are going to change "window animation scale" and the 2 entries following it, for a total of 3 changes.
-Change all 3 to "0.5x"

Battery life
I took it upon myself to do some battery life testing. I calibrated my battery by running the phone until it shut itself off. I then plugged it in and didn't take it off the charger until it was at 100%. That night I took the phone off the charger, it was at 100%, I did not turn the screen on. I just let it sit for 8 hours while I slept. I had google now and location totally disabled. By morning I had lost 4% battery. The next night I did the same thing but with location services enabled. I lost 5% that night. The next night I enabled google now. That night I also lost 5%.
Something to note. The battery discharges faster from 100% than it would at, say 60%. If the phone were at about 60% when I ran my test, I would probably see a loss of 2%.
These findings are interesting becuase I have done extensive testing in the past regarding location services, using better battery stats, wake lock detector, and GSAM battery monitor. In the past, on previous phones, I always had significantly more drain when anything location related was allowed to run. I noticed when I got the Note 5 it slept really well out of the box. So maybe they figured it out with this phone, I don't know. The battery is smaller than my Note 4 was, but certainly lasts longer.
Anyway, try out this setup and tell me what you think!
T-Mobile Wifi Calling
I added a new .xml called WifiCallEnabled.xml for T-mobile users. This is the same as the original zip, only with Wifi Calling enabled.

Attached is wifi calling enabled, everything else from the original .xml is still disabled. I will also post it in the OP.
Hi seh 6183,
Thank you for this guide.
Maybe a stupid question but everything works as before when we use your xml?
I do not want to loose any functionality on my note 5. I know you stated that in the OP but maybe there are some things we loose but you don't care about these. Like S Pen, location,......
A second question: how much batterie life did you win after using this? Just curious.
Thank you

Everything is working using my .xml minus a few things I never use such as WiFi Calling and s-pen keeper. I have uploaded a second .xml for WiFi Calling in the OP and if you want to re-enable s-pen keeper, just open PDP and scroll down to s-pen keeper and uncheck the box. While you're in there look through the others to see if you see anything else you may use such as the T-Mobile account app.
I've actually never done battery testing with and without packages disabled. I will do that tonight and update the OP tomorrow.
Thanks for this. Xml file worked great. Any idea on how to disable the headphones volume warning?

Sorry thats built into Touchwiz. This app can only disable apps and services.
So to reverse everything you have turned off we can simply just unchecked all the boxes in the PDP app and all will be back to normal?

That would take forever, just hit the 3 dots in the top right and select "Enable all disabled", and you'll be back to stock.
I read everyone comments... I would
Say that after the last update that was of 144mb... My battery percentage has only gone down 3-4 percentage at night time
Well boys I'm off to greener pastures. I rooted my phone yesterday and installed a rom and a kernel. I hated giving up my warranty and Samsung pay, but I hated more the lag and bad ram management. I particularly hated the keyboard lag and auto correct issues. When I read the features of the arter kernel I was blown away and had to try it. I had to do something because I kept looking at nexus 6ps every day and was probably going to make the switch, so I would have lost Samsung pay anyway.
The note 5 truly is the best phone overall, but some things just need to be ironed out and that unfortunately can't be don't without root.
And? You like it much better?
What are the advantages?

So far there is zero lag. None while typing or scrolling. I'm using the darthstalker rom and arter kernel. Converted the storage to f2s using arter and everything flies. Apps stay in memory way longer too. Will test battery over the next couple days and see if any lag comes back.
Hi Ram again with another review this time for the official Good Lock App for the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. I would love to get your feedback and comments, click the link below
Mod Edit
Thanks for your time and bye for now.
I tried it and had even more battery drain than I already do with Android System. Android System was #1, System UI was #2. I usually have 3-5 hours of screen time (with a charge half way through the day), so there's no reason anything should be above Screen in the battery usage list.

I'm having no slow down at all with this. What setup are you using? I am on rooted stock. I'm loving this change and cant wait to see what else they can bring to it.

I also didn't notice any slow down. Only thing that bothers me a lot is that eveytime I reboot or I try to make some changes the App uninstall himself. Everything else looks really nice.

I believe the uninstall bug was addressed and fixed in the newest update. I just glanced over the patch notes so not 100% sure.

Not to mentioned the very strange multitasking menu that makes the experience intolerable. I'm hoping they just give people the stock Android notification shade independent of the app.

Oh yes, there is plenty of UI slowdown and almost a 1% per minute battery drain, in addition to the side-effect of turning my phone into a fine pocket warmer.
The app itself is a good alternative. But there are some serious issues that may be addressed by fixing memory leaks and clearing some cache data. But I am un-rooted and plan on staying that way for a bit

Something's wrong with your phone. I have nothing like that. Neither do the many other users of this app. SystemUI has used 2% of my battery over the last 3 days.

Why with this enabled, when I press power button off then back on, screen doesn't lock. Does it only engage after x amount of time? I just have default set.

Please WRITE them about the performance and battery issues. I already did. They listen to our feedback. Without those issues I'd use Good Lock as default.

If you have it set to lock immediately through your lockscreen settings, not through GoodLock (GL does not have any options for this that I have seen) it should lock as soon as the screen is turned off. By default, mine was set up for 5 minutes (I think) but I keep mine set to 1 minute of inactivity.
Awesome that was the settings I was looking for.
How do u ADD apps to the apptray in recent screen? I see edit and I can remove but how do u ADD your favorites?

Go into settings and select wallpaper. In the upper left corner you should be able to choose home screen or lock screen.

Quick Update for folks that are having the massive Battery Drain issue:
I took some advice from another thread that suggested actually creating a routine for Everywhere vs just using the Default profile. Apparently there is something wonky in the Default Routine that causes it to attempt to pinpoint your location repeatedly. (wakelock) This in turn make the GPS and location service run constantly. After creating a Routine and basically setting it up with EVERYWHERE as the location, I have had some different results.
1. The phone is still running warm, definitely not hot as before. I could heat my coffee with it.
2. The battery drain is definitely still there, but not as severe.
I have been sending feedback over the past few days. We will see if Sammy will make any changes in the future.
I am also curious to see other finding from other users.

No. But if you are, I would blame your problems on something you've done with your rooted phone, not Goodlock. The app works fine for almost everyone. It's your experience that's abnormal, not mine.
On the lock screen a full screen ad appears within 3 seconds. I hate it. Is this normal?
I've tried disabling a bunch of stuff, changing permissions, notification options, etc, nothing seems to get rid of it. Anyone else had this issue, and found out what causes it or find a way to fix it?
Not normal. At least it wasn't for me (U11 Unlocked)
On other phones, this was usually due to either ES File Explorer or any of the GO apps like GOSMS, etc. Try uninstalling those if you have them.
News Republic is known to serve ads too. you mind showing the ad on your lockscreen? Some of them contains hints of which app is serving them.
Also include a list of apps so maybe we can identify which is the culprit if any of us tried it before.

I think I found what the problem is while looking on the Play store at the Sense Home app. Different ad, but same thing.

I could be wrong because I'm not very smart, but I think this means its baked into the launcher, with no option to actually stop it. Tried clearing all app data, cache etc in airplane mode so it can't get more ads fed to it, but it's still there. Even tried to switch to a standard google launcher but even that didn't get rid of it.
I'm still hopeful that I'm missing something simple here, but also worried that HTC are being giant a-holes forcing ads and not allowing options to remove. Anyone have any other ideas?
By any chance do you have the Yelp App? LOL
also you could try
Settins/Sound ¬ifications/On the lock screen/
Don't show notifications at all
or go to Blinkfeed. Click the + sign and uncheck Mealtime recommendations.
Could just be sense home. Have you tried to disable ads in the launcher? If it still happens, then it's a third party app causing the lockscreen ads.
In order to get rid of notification apps that pop up in the upper left corner, all you have to do is swipe down to show the ads, then longpress on the particular app thats really pissing you off, and a menu will show and then select "never show again". That news republic used to piss me off all the time when it pops up and there was no other way to get rid of it. Its gone now,,,,lol. Anyway, try that method.

Thanks. I don't have yelp, and have tried that setting. Don't have meal recommendations on either.
OK I think I fixed it now. Pretty annoying.
It's counter-intuitive, but I had to actually enable mealtime recommendations in blinkfeed so that all the other stuff I turned off could override it, for some stupid reason.
Scratch that. It somehow un-fixed itself. This is driving me insane!!
Something to do with HTC and Yelp being in bed with each other, as I don't have yelp or anything on my phone. It still shows up whether I have mealtime recommendations or ads allow or disallowed or any combination of the above.
Be good if they would provide a simple/transparent way of blocking this s#!t. I really can't think of anything else to try.....
It's not news republic? That's the only thing I've seen do that

Yeah i got that the one time i signed into HTC account and turned on location for it. It started giving me lunch time recommendations etc. I dont normally use HTC account, just google, but thought i would try it on 11. Quickly did new setup and didn't sign in to HTC.

Thanks for that. Worked. I had to go though sense companion setup again to remove the account, but it worked. Took a bit of time afterwards for the ad to disappear, but it hasn't come back since.
Flashlight
I have an HTC U11 that started showing full screen ads (after about 3 seconds viewing the lockscreen, an ad appears suggesting a nearby restaurant) on the lockscreen. After trying everything I found online, I finally took someone's advice and disabled the Flashlight app. Yes, the Flashlight app that's installed when you get the phone. I didn't think it would work, but it did. Give it a try.
I have flashlight installed and use it multiple times a day via the squeeze function... I'd be very surprised if it's that.
Op, post a screenshot of all your installed apps if this problem still persists.
It sounds like you may have already figured it out. But this is likely the Sense Companion app. Which you can disable under settings - apps.
To my knowledge, the Sense Companion is what causes the lock screen suggestion that is pictured in the OP's screenshot.
Edit: Didn't realize that I repeated the post from the person above me.
