So I have my N5 for a couple months now, running stock ROM with stock launcher, rooted with Xposed tho.
Today while sitting around with some friends it made a sound I never heard before, sounds like some kind of notification but no notification was found... I open the lock screen and there's nothing. Then, while I holding it and looking at it the sound beeped again... My friends thought I was an idiot but then it happened again!
3 times in about 2 minutes and I have no idea what it was, there was no indication of anything on screen or in the notification area and I never heard that notification sound before...
Is there any way to find out what that was? Or any place that shows exactly which notification sounds are configured? Cause this is having me worried...
It's been a couple of hours since then and it hasn't happened again.
It was me, I was trying to contact you...

I had this also before while using a rooted S3. I can hear a faint sound but no notification, although at one point I did notice a toast notification fading. So assumed it was one of the apps I installed that requires root (probably greenify at that time) that is kicking in and that supersu was giving the toast notification.
maybe change the notification method on the supersu you are using or check the logs
I haven't encountered this on my Nexus as I'm not rooted

My wife's GNex was doing this a while back. It drove me CRAZY! I figured maybe it was an app that she installed, but she claimed she didn't install any new apps. So then I thought maybe it had something to do with the phone even though it was completely stock. Then, when she got a G2,she installed all her apps, and it made that same sound AGAIN! I took her phone and tried to figure it out.
Long story short, it was her Yahoo email app. In the settings, it was set to not show notifications in the statusbar. However, it was still set to make a notification sound. I don't know who would make an app that would allow you to hide the notification, but still PLAY THE DANG NOTIFICATION SOUND! Anyways, it sounds like you may have an app installed that behaves the same way?

This would make sense but I didn't install anything lately and am generally very very aware of anything I put on my phone and after that I greenify almost everything...
The only thing I found possible is that I seem to have forgotten to greenify Zedge and when I checked processes last night it had a service running. Maybe that was it? I greenified it after that of course.
Anyone know of a notification sound Zedge makes? I found nothing in settings.
Maybe it was a NFC chip close to some readable tags (like credit cards with tap to pay possibilities)? Check how it sounds...it can be it ...

Stepback! We got a winner!
After you said that I remembered that the phone was sitting on my wallet at the time, tried it again and there's that sound again. So now I know what it is generally but why does it beep? Simply to let me know that there's a NFC card around? Does it read it? Kinda uncool that it reads my credit card when I didn't ask it too...
Yep, it reads it, but only some common data, nothing to worry about . You can check what it reads by installing some NFC app like NFC tools.

Do you have fb messenger installed? For me, it does the ghost notifications. I chat on fb on pc, then I stop. About 1-2 hours later my phone get ghost notifications.
I chat again on fb on pc, then i stop chating on fb. Start using my phone after I stopped chatting on fb on pc. After 10-20 mins I get the notifactions for incoming messages on fb chat on phone even after I replied to them and seen all of them on pc. These notifications disappiers as soon as the notification sound goes off

Aight good to know.
I turned off NFC now as I don't use it at all and I see no reason why it should be running. I guess we always have something new to learn about these phones huh?
Thanks again.

Lol, yes ! NFC Tools is awesome
was it this sound: (youtube.com/watch?v=wrKujB1JACk) ?
This was also driving me crazy for a few months, also slowing my phone down and heating the battery to around 40c! i guess there was something bad on my nfc cards...

I'm getting frustrated with my Charge, but less frustrated now since its rooted.
I've been trying to mess around with this but need some help. I'll even pay for someones time to get my phone on track and setup how I want! I know this sounds like a wishlist but I'm pulling out my hair spending hours reading, trying, deleting, retrying, deleting again...

Fixes:
1) Since I rooted my phone, it has NO clock. I want the time at the top right side.
2) When I get a text message, I use handset, it shows a notification at the top left after I close out the window.
3) My visual voicemail is gone. I pay $3/mo for this from Verizon and the apps I downloaded dont work for crap or run to much and eat up the battery
4) Email is delayed or doesnt sync unless I do it manually
- 2 gmail accounts, 1 pop3 and ms exchange
5) Not sure how this happens, but I use my phone for an alarm clock. about once or twice a week I wake up to find my phone is off.. and its plugged in.
What I want:
1) Profiles - I used to have this on my old Nokia. It would select not only the ring volume, but also who could call. When I set it to "Sleepy Time" all calls went to vm except parents and wife, and so on with others.
2) Better email - I need something that is a better email client that sync's emails for each account at certain times and has better signatures, one for each email.
3) Battery management - I use "CPU Profiles" now but doesn't seem to shut 4G off... EVER. I heard this is the same with other apps, but there has to be something better out there.
4) Camera hack so I can still use it when the battery is less than 10%
What Id like but not necessary:
1) Ability to connect Wii-motes to my phone to play old school games
2) LED to flash when a text comes in. I like it and think its neat
If you have some skills or know what the F im doing wrong, hit me up. Have some $$ in paypal that I'd pay for a consultation fee
Don't know about the rest of the stuff but in the Market there is an app called
NoLed and you can set it up to flash different colors for different things such as texts, email.
Fixes:
1) You are on on Gummy from what i can see. To get the clock go to settings -> TSM Parts -> Statusbar Settings -> Text Color -> Whatever color (default is black that's why you can't see it). Reboot the phone
4) Ive never gotten non-gmail accounts to "push" or notify me right when I got an e-mail. This is the aspect of blackberries I miss the most. Gmail accounts work fine, but make sure you are using the gmail app, not the e-mail app.
What you want:
1) Android is missing this too (used it on my blackberry). I have looked for apps but I couldn't find any free ones
3) Look for "LTE switch" in the market to turn off 4g. Juice Defender is nice for battery management. I personally don't use it, but some people here do. You have to pay to get most of the good features.
4) Look here You have to be on froyo i cant tell from your screenshot whether it is gummy fe or gbe.
What you would like:
1) I don't think it is possible. I have a wii and i think those remotes work off IR. The charge has no IR reciever. You MIGHT however be able to take an old (non-wireless) xbox controller, change that usb to a micro usb, and write some code into the rom/hardware. It would take some serious hacking though.
2) See above on noLED. I personally dont like it but a bunch of people use it. Keeping a few pixels on the AMOLED screen on doesn't consume a lot of power since there is no backlight and a pixel only consumes power if it is on.
About the wii mote it actualy works off bluetooth and has an infared camera on it. So to use the tracking u would need an led light source for it to track. Also with your phone you will need drivers and a way to calibrate. I dont know how to connect on phone ive used a wii mote on my computer to make a multitouch surface

Vvm is in the gummy toolbox... Go to terminal emulator, type su, hit enter, it will ask for root rights. Then hit menu and toggle soft keyboard to see it again. Type gummytoolbox, then hit enter. Choose the option for tweaks I believe. Or maybe its apps. Either way just find it and choose to install vvm. It will give you an option for update/reinstall or something like that. Choose it and finish. Then go to app drawer and there will be a blue vm icon that will allow you to sync to vvm.
For email.. In that same toolbox you might try to update the email app. This may fix it. since this is a basic email apk it does not act like the stock one. Settings include "frequency"... You should probably choose hourly unless you have an extended battery.
Speed rules...
Edit... In gummy tsm parts controls what shows in the status bar. Go to your tsm settings. Adding/removing the clock will most likely require a reboot.

Ok. This a hotboot. Sometimes it will reboot and other times it will not. Try the gummy 2.1.. Or remember to clear cache partition and davlik cache every 3 days. All roms that do not update daily can see this. I just clear cache and "poof" its back to normal.

Using Android Lollipop/Marshmallow's lock screen notifications?
Tired of having to press the power button to see them?
Want your phone to turn on new notifications, but only when you grab to look at it?
Want your phone to turn on right when you take it out of your pocket?
Then this app is for you!
Introducing the all new efficiency app Glimpse Notifications:

This all new app fills an annoying hole in Android Lollipop's lock screen notification system. It's nice, it's shiny, but you always need to push that damn power button. This app does it for you, and also respects quiet times and whether or not your device is in your pocket.
It also does this:
recurring notifications (screen on and/or sound)
emulate LED notifications that the system lockscreen no longer shows
Double-tap to lock function for lockscreen
custom lockscreen display time
lockscreen lock-on-cover function
At the same time the app is completely for free and without ads!

Looks interesting, thanks for sharing. I'm an ACDisplay user on an S4 but it doesn't seem to stay active the notification allowed so I'll try this.
thanks for this, it works well
only problem I found is that pocket detection doesn't work on my Samsung Galaxy S6

Yes, been using that one (and others) as well, but I always wondered why everybody wants to reinvent the lockscreen. I'm using a pattern lock and found none of the existing solutions to work well.

Strange. So, have you observed the screen turning on even if the proximity sensor is covered?
I plan on adding an extension to the pocket mode to cover the following use case: if the phone is pocketet or face down and you hear a notification, you typically take the phone and see what happened. Then I want it to turn on, but not necessarily everytime I take it out of my pocket. So something like "if coming out of pocket AND last notification less than N seconds ago -> turn on screen".
Perhaps we can sort your issues with the sensor out on the way.

yes, I covered the proximity sensor and sent the test notification and the screen turned on
I tried a different app that does basically the same like yours and it has the same problem, so maybe it's something related to Samsung?

Linked here from the OP's comment in the ACDisplay xda portal article. Looking very nice so far. Only feature I miss from ACDisplay is the active mode, i.e. screen on when removed from pocket, regardless of notification. This is a great way to keep power button use down, especially for devices like the N5 with known hardware button failures.

Yeah I already assumed people will want that and I'm planning to cover this use case as well. Personally, when I had apps working like that in the past I found it a bit annoying that everytime I took out the phone to put it like on the table it turned on (even if there were pending notifications). That's why I thought about how I could narrow down the logic to be more useful.

Thanks. Well, as a matter of fact I started out with having a black list and found that to be less useful than just marking the few notification sources I'm actually interested in (like Mail, SMS, WA). I'll think about throwing in a switch to configure black/white list behaviour, but it's not top of the list TBH.

Big oops here - I just realized that for the testing notification, I skip all the other checks because I figured it would confuse people if the other other filters prevented the test. Turns out the way I did it it confused us all. I'm going to change that in the next version (which is taking shape).

Yeah, I can understand your point, but a black list, in addition to allowing users to block apps whose notifications they don't consider important/desirable, would also allow users to block out any app/process/service that Glimpse may report about, such as 'wireless networks available', you know, things from Android system or System UI, whose notifications just drain the battery without any real purpose.
But hey, it's just a suggestion, it's totally up to you what gets implemented.
Great app nevertheless..

The ones in my .xml will not harm your phone. If you want to experiment beyond what is in my .xml just be sure to research before disabling anything. Also I may have disabled apps that you use so you may want to scroll through what is disabled to make sure I didn't turn anything off you want.
-In the top right click the three dots
-Click "Import from xml" (this is for the T-mobile variant, but will work for all Note 5's)
-Select my xml ("disabledSAFE.xml") and click import (it's attached to this post as a .zip file)
Speed up all animations.
-Go to settings>about device
-click build number 7 times to enable developer options
-Go to settings>developer options
-Scroll down until you see "window animation scale".
-You are going to change "window animation scale" and the 2 entries following it, for a total of 3 changes.
-Change all 3 to "0.5x"

Battery life
I took it upon myself to do some battery life testing. I calibrated my battery by running the phone until it shut itself off. I then plugged it in and didn't take it off the charger until it was at 100%. That night I took the phone off the charger, it was at 100%, I did not turn the screen on. I just let it sit for 8 hours while I slept. I had google now and location totally disabled. By morning I had lost 4% battery. The next night I did the same thing but with location services enabled. I lost 5% that night. The next night I enabled google now. That night I also lost 5%.
Something to note. The battery discharges faster from 100% than it would at, say 60%. If the phone were at about 60% when I ran my test, I would probably see a loss of 2%.
These findings are interesting becuase I have done extensive testing in the past regarding location services, using better battery stats, wake lock detector, and GSAM battery monitor. In the past, on previous phones, I always had significantly more drain when anything location related was allowed to run. I noticed when I got the Note 5 it slept really well out of the box. So maybe they figured it out with this phone, I don't know. The battery is smaller than my Note 4 was, but certainly lasts longer.
Anyway, try out this setup and tell me what you think!
T-Mobile Wifi Calling
I added a new .xml called WifiCallEnabled.xml for T-mobile users. This is the same as the original zip, only with Wifi Calling enabled.

Anyone know how to resize embedded images on a forum?
Nice guide. It's pretty much what I do but I only turn on Adguard if I'm visiting a site with annoying ads. I don't like the VPN notification up top.
Thanks, why not just disable window animations altogether?

Yes I have a t-mobile note 5 with at&t so can't use it. I will re-enable it and upload a new xml for you guys.
Attached is wifi calling enabled, everything else from the original .xml is still disabled. I will also post it in the OP.
Hi seh 6183,
Thank you for this guide.
Maybe a stupid question but everything works as before when we use your xml?
I do not want to loose any functionality on my note 5. I know you stated that in the OP but maybe there are some things we loose but you don't care about these. Like S Pen, location,......
A second question: how much batterie life did you win after using this? Just curious.
Thank you

Everything is working using my .xml minus a few things I never use such as WiFi Calling and s-pen keeper. I have uploaded a second .xml for WiFi Calling in the OP and if you want to re-enable s-pen keeper, just open PDP and scroll down to s-pen keeper and uncheck the box. While you're in there look through the others to see if you see anything else you may use such as the T-Mobile account app.
I've actually never done battery testing with and without packages disabled. I will do that tonight and update the OP tomorrow.
Thanks for this. Xml file worked great. Any idea on how to disable the headphones volume warning?

Sorry thats built into Touchwiz. This app can only disable apps and services.
So to reverse everything you have turned off we can simply just unchecked all the boxes in the PDP app and all will be back to normal?

That would take forever, just hit the 3 dots in the top right and select "Enable all disabled", and you'll be back to stock.
I read everyone comments... I would
Say that after the last update that was of 144mb... My battery percentage has only gone down 3-4 percentage at night time
Well boys I'm off to greener pastures. I rooted my phone yesterday and installed a rom and a kernel. I hated giving up my warranty and Samsung pay, but I hated more the lag and bad ram management. I particularly hated the keyboard lag and auto correct issues. When I read the features of the arter kernel I was blown away and had to try it. I had to do something because I kept looking at nexus 6ps every day and was probably going to make the switch, so I would have lost Samsung pay anyway.
The note 5 truly is the best phone overall, but some things just need to be ironed out and that unfortunately can't be don't without root.
And? You like it much better?
What are the advantages?

So far there is zero lag. None while typing or scrolling. I'm using the darthstalker rom and arter kernel. Converted the storage to f2s using arter and everything flies. Apps stay in memory way longer too. Will test battery over the next couple days and see if any lag comes back.
On the lock screen a full screen ad appears within 3 seconds. I hate it. Is this normal?
I've tried disabling a bunch of stuff, changing permissions, notification options, etc, nothing seems to get rid of it. Anyone else had this issue, and found out what causes it or find a way to fix it?
Not normal. At least it wasn't for me (U11 Unlocked)
On other phones, this was usually due to either ES File Explorer or any of the GO apps like GOSMS, etc. Try uninstalling those if you have them.
News Republic is known to serve ads too. you mind showing the ad on your lockscreen? Some of them contains hints of which app is serving them.
Also include a list of apps so maybe we can identify which is the culprit if any of us tried it before.

I think I found what the problem is while looking on the Play store at the Sense Home app. Different ad, but same thing.

I could be wrong because I'm not very smart, but I think this means its baked into the launcher, with no option to actually stop it. Tried clearing all app data, cache etc in airplane mode so it can't get more ads fed to it, but it's still there. Even tried to switch to a standard google launcher but even that didn't get rid of it.
I'm still hopeful that I'm missing something simple here, but also worried that HTC are being giant a-holes forcing ads and not allowing options to remove. Anyone have any other ideas?
By any chance do you have the Yelp App? LOL
also you could try
Settins/Sound ¬ifications/On the lock screen/
Don't show notifications at all
or go to Blinkfeed. Click the + sign and uncheck Mealtime recommendations.
Could just be sense home. Have you tried to disable ads in the launcher? If it still happens, then it's a third party app causing the lockscreen ads.
In order to get rid of notification apps that pop up in the upper left corner, all you have to do is swipe down to show the ads, then longpress on the particular app thats really pissing you off, and a menu will show and then select "never show again". That news republic used to piss me off all the time when it pops up and there was no other way to get rid of it. Its gone now,,,,lol. Anyway, try that method.

Thanks. I don't have yelp, and have tried that setting. Don't have meal recommendations on either.
OK I think I fixed it now. Pretty annoying.
It's counter-intuitive, but I had to actually enable mealtime recommendations in blinkfeed so that all the other stuff I turned off could override it, for some stupid reason.
Scratch that. It somehow un-fixed itself. This is driving me insane!!
Something to do with HTC and Yelp being in bed with each other, as I don't have yelp or anything on my phone. It still shows up whether I have mealtime recommendations or ads allow or disallowed or any combination of the above.
Be good if they would provide a simple/transparent way of blocking this s#!t. I really can't think of anything else to try.....
It's not news republic? That's the only thing I've seen do that

Yeah i got that the one time i signed into HTC account and turned on location for it. It started giving me lunch time recommendations etc. I dont normally use HTC account, just google, but thought i would try it on 11. Quickly did new setup and didn't sign in to HTC.

Thanks for that. Worked. I had to go though sense companion setup again to remove the account, but it worked. Took a bit of time afterwards for the ad to disappear, but it hasn't come back since.
Flashlight
I have an HTC U11 that started showing full screen ads (after about 3 seconds viewing the lockscreen, an ad appears suggesting a nearby restaurant) on the lockscreen. After trying everything I found online, I finally took someone's advice and disabled the Flashlight app. Yes, the Flashlight app that's installed when you get the phone. I didn't think it would work, but it did. Give it a try.
I have flashlight installed and use it multiple times a day via the squeeze function... I'd be very surprised if it's that.
Op, post a screenshot of all your installed apps if this problem still persists.
It sounds like you may have already figured it out. But this is likely the Sense Companion app. Which you can disable under settings - apps.
To my knowledge, the Sense Companion is what causes the lock screen suggestion that is pictured in the OP's screenshot.
Edit: Didn't realize that I repeated the post from the person above me.
Hallo all,
I own a GW4 Classic. I used to own the GW. During walking i used to have audio messages every 1 km with the GW. It would tell me my heartbeat, average speed and so on. With my new GW4 i can't get any sound out of it. Firmware version DUJA. All notifications, system, ringtone, audio, media and so on work fine. All settings are standard, i resseted the watch twice. It should work out of the box.
The audio Guide is on and i set the frequency on one min. for instance, start walking. After one minute, it vibrates with a black screen with green letters telling me the distance. Thats all.
I can not imagine it is a hardware problem? What do you guys think?

Interesting. I have used this when cycling, while connected to my Galaxy Buds+. I've never touched the settings, and it worked just fine. Actually glad to know that I can adjust it or turn it off. Might be an obvious question, but are you using headphones/earbuds? If not, you've no doubt checked the audio settings on your watch?

Thx for your reply. I do not use headphones. I checked all the audio settings and no luck. It should work out of the box. Thats why i reset the watch before. Sound should come out of the speaker of the watch without headphones.

Right, I see that now in your original post. I would suggest you keep playing with it, trying various options, settings, etc., and not send it in for repair (at least not yet). The feature works, and in my experience, this kind of issue is most likely not a repair issue, but a setting or system limitation issue.
I am trying for 2 weeks already. Deleted the apps completely. Deleted the plugins for the watch. Reset to factory 3 times. New firmware this morning. Twice contact with Samsung. I am completely lost.....

Deleted the apps completely? Isn't that a systems app?
Don't think so Samsung wearable is an Android app. Together with a plugin it connects to your phone thru BT. Then you have Samsung health for your fitness stuff and Samsung health monitor for ECG and Blood Pressure.
I deleted all, deleted storage and cache first. Like i said, if you delete all the apps, reset the watch, and do not roll back a backup, it should be as out of the factory. Connect to Wearable app, the plugin is installed and all should work as out of the box. Nobody complains about this "audio guide" feature, so it looks like it's only my watch which is faulty.
Would be nice if i got some feedback, if other people struggle with this feature.

Thx for your post. After your remark to not send it for repair i gave it another try. Reset the watch, installed the wearable app again without restoring a backup. Guess...... it didn't work. But then i restored my latest backup. It didn't work. Then i was goin thru all the settings and i noticed one setting i could try. GENERAL > INPUT > LANGUAGE. I was able to download a Dutch language pack. And you won't believe it, but it works. I am so happy. It cost me two weeks!

That's great to hear! I figured it had to be a software issue given that you know your hardware is fine (as audio is working), so glad you found it and sorted it out in the end!
Thank you!
Few days ago I have install last firmware (photo in attach) and now i have a same problem. Almost one year I used it for running (gw4), and after every km I got audio guidence, now I only have vibration, screen turns on for a few seconds but without any voice. Any idea how to solve this irritating problem? Thanks
For me it worked to change default language on my phone (and not watch) to english. Bad solution, but it is working
