Ads on lock screen - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

On the lock screen a full screen ad appears within 3 seconds. I hate it. Is this normal?
I've tried disabling a bunch of stuff,changing permissions, notification options, etc, nothing seems to get rid of it. Anyone else had this issue, and found out what causes it or find a way to fix it?

Not normal. At least it wasn't for me (U11 Unlocked)

On other phones, this was usually due to either ES File Explorer or any of the GO apps like GOSMS, etc. Try uninstalling those if you have them.

News Republic is known to serve ads too. you mind showing the ad on your lockscreen? Some of them contains hints of which app is serving them.
Also include a list of apps so maybe we can identify which is the culprit if any of us tried it before.

I think I found what the problem is while looking on the Play store at the Sense Home app. Different ad, but same thing.

I could be wrong because I'm not very smart, but I think this means its baked into the launcher, with no option to actually stop it. Tried clearing all app data, cache etc in airplane mode so it can't get more ads fed to it, but it's still there. Even tried to switch to a standard google launcher but even that didn't get rid of it.
I'm still hopeful that I'm missing something simple here, but also worried that HTC are being giant a-holes forcing ads and not allowing options to remove. Anyone have any other ideas?

By any chance do you have the Yelp App? LOL
also you could try
Settins/Sound &notifications/On the lock screen/
Don't show notifications at all
or go to Blinkfeed. Click the + sign and uncheck Mealtime recommendations.

Could just be sense home. Have you tried to disable ads in the launcher? If it still happens, then it's a third party app causing the lockscreen ads.

In order to get rid of notification apps that pop up in the upper left corner, all you have to do is swipe down to show the ads, then longpress on the particular app thats really pissing you off, and a menu will show and then select "never show again". That news republic used to piss me off all the time when it pops up and there was no other way to get rid of it. Its gone now,,,,lol. Anyway, try that method.

Thanks. I don't have yelp, and have tried that setting. Don't have meal recommendations on either.

OK I think I fixed it now. Pretty annoying.
It's counter-intuitive, but I had to actually enable mealtime recommendations in blinkfeed so that all the other stuff I turned off could override it, for some stupid reason.

Scratch that. It somehow un-fixed itself. This is driving me insane!!
Something to do with HTC and Yelp being in bed with each other, as I don't have yelp or anything on my phone. It still shows up whether I have mealtime recommendations or ads allow or disallowed or any combination of the above.
Be good if they would provide a simple/transparent way of blocking this s#!t. I really can't think of anything else to try.....

It's not news republic? That's the only thing I've seen do that

Yeah i got that the one time i signed into HTC account and turned on location for it. It started giving me lunch time recommendations etc. I dont normally use HTC account, just google, but thought i would try it on 11. Quickly did new setup and didn't sign in to HTC.

Thanks for that. Worked. I had to go though sense companion setup again to remove the account, but it worked. Took a bit of time afterwards for the ad to disappear, but it hasn't come back since.

Flashlight
I have an HTC U11 that started showing full screen ads (after about 3 seconds viewing the lockscreen, an ad appears suggesting a nearby restaurant) on the lockscreen. After trying everything I found online, I finally took someone's advice and disabled the Flashlight app. Yes, the Flashlight app that's installed when you get the phone. I didn't think it would work, but it did. Give it a try.

I have flashlight installed and use it multiple times a day via the squeeze function... I'd be very surprised if it's that.
Op, post a screenshot of all your installed apps if this problem still persists.

It sounds like you may have already figured it out. But this is likely the Sense Companion app. Which you can disable under settings - apps.

To my knowledge, the Sense Companion is what causes the lock screen suggestion that is pictured in the OP's screenshot.
Edit: Didn't realize that I repeated the post from the person above me.

Nice app, need translation?!
Nice app.
I found the setup a bit confusing, but i don't really know how it could be made better.
After trying it i got some FCs:
I was using the unlock feature.

I'm using a i9000 on latest cyanogen build from repo.

Yea, I wasn't too happy with the setup, but... I only found out about the brightness thing after testing it out on a i9000 too. Tried a more automated approach, but doesn't produce the same results as regular presses. I'll upgrade the setup process when I find a better solution.
Thanks for the logs, I tried reproducing the problem, but didn't get a force close, but I think I might know what the problem might be.
Will get to work on that.
lol the font looks really really cute.
I'm still not able to reproduce the forceclose, but thanks to the logs, I believe I fixed the problem. One of them was leftover code I missed removing which strangely wasn't causing me any problems.
The other... should be fixed.
You'll see an update soon.

Had to use No Lock app, to disable normal lock screen, then set the VOID, work great!
Nice work there....but i have one problem tough....during calls the phone gets locked itself and i have to unlock it again to hang up and stuff
And could you add a "disable stock lockscreen" feature?? It would be highly appreciated

I'm currently fixing up the call lock right now.
There wasn't a disable stock lockscreen feature because it was supposed to disable the stock lockscreen automatically. However, that only seems to be working on the phones I'm testing on and strangely, the phones I can test on won't show the stock lockscreen, but some others does.
I'll be doing some more work into this part.
Update
New update out. Fixed up the calling. Now, the incoming call and incall screens won't be locked up. After call, it will lock back up. This works if you press the power button to turn off too.
New Feature. Find it in experimental setting. New feature affects the screen time out. Now, if you want, the Screen Timeout will lock with Void Lock instead of turning off the screen. Good feature for those like me who uses the WakeLock and avoids using the power button.
I forgot to disable my other lock screen and now seem to be locked out of my phone. Evo 4g with decks rom. any suggestions?
Great dev! can't wait for it to work completely on ICS
Couple of issues
evo 3d: when going to uninstall the uninstall screen flashes like crazy, buttons are highlighted (force stop, clear data, move to sd, uninstall) and blinking, takes several taps before you can get it uninstalled.
evo 4g: also when uninstalling it flashes, sometimes you have to clear data, move to SD card, then uninstall
it's one of the oddest things I've ever seen... and no, I'm not the one who left the nasty market comments.

Wow! that's also one of the oddest things I've heard about.
But, I can't imagine why it would happen. None of my code goes beyond the lockscreen and shouldn't affect the uninstalling at all. I just did an uninstall on my phone, tablet, and old phones to see if I get the same issue, but it was able to be uninstalled properly.
The only uninstall issue I know of is that the app is granted Device Admin status after the first time you press the Void Lock app, but that will only give you an Uninstall is not Successful message instead of the issues you are having.
Also odd that it happened to both of your phones.
I can't seem to think of why that uninstalling problem happened and I'm 100% positive that none of the code for Void Lock will affect the uninstalling. But if all that flashing and etc happens only when you are uninstalling Void Lock then Void Lock should definitely be the culprit. Its so strange...
Hmm, could it be related to your rom?
I also never had to clear data or move to SD card to uninstall it. Just disable device admin in the phone's Security Settings and then uninstall it and it'll work properly.
I'm not too worried about the market comments. I guess I expect it because of all the incompatibility issues I have not been able to predict when I released it. Yet, it does work for a lot of phones so I wouldn't even know which phones to restrict. All the problems seems to be coming from manufacturers making changes to the default lockscreen. Still working on fixing all of that right now.
I am a bit upset at those nasty market comments that rates low because of not being able to uninstall. I did give instructions in the market description. I guess I'll need add a new tab in the Settings to describe how to uninstall.
nice lockscreen.

Pure guess. There's a hidden app that loads at startup that they don't want displayed. It could be unique to Rogers.

the app Visible Vote Mobile's icon is a blank space in ICS for some reason (and they haven't updated it yet), but any app would change locations depending upon the ordering of and reception of new notifications, not stay over to the left like that (in the newest slot I believe)...
It's not a Rogers thing, mine doesn't have this. Was it doing this at first boot, or only after some apps were installed?

What happens on my screen is as follows: Whenever an app is opened and running, one that has an icon on the notification bar, that icon will first appear to the very far left of the notification bar. Then, a few seconds later, it jumps over to the right about 4-5mm as you can see in my OP image.
I just did another test, and created two images. The first one below was taken just a moment after I plugged the phone into my computer with a USB connection. As you can see, the USB Debugging icon appears, and it's to the absolute left. Then, after it disappears, all the icons jump over to the right, as you can see in the second image below.

Are you using the app "notification toggle"? I know that app will cause the gap in the notification bar if you set it to hide the notification icon.

Right. My unit from Rogers does not exhibit the behaviour in your screenshot. It behaves perfectly. So it's almost 100% got to be an app that's installed.
I would go to Settings -> Apps -> Running, and then start killing apps one by one, watching the notification bar each time to figure out what the culprit is. (I presume when you drag the bar down, you don't see this "ghost" notification.) Note: Your phone may become unstable if you start killing all your running apps, but a reboot is guaranteed to bring it back to normal.

Actually, you have the right idea. I had a look at all my running programs, and one in particular came to mind. It's called 3G Watchdog.
It allows you to have a notification icon if your data connection is active; however, even when your data connection is not active, the icon is still there, it's just invisible.
Peter
Addendum: I sent an email to the developer to see if he can change the app so that when you don't want a notification, it does not take up the space. We'll see what he/she says.

Whenever a notification first pops up on the task bar it will take up the "entire" top bar (from left till the system battery & signal). Afterwards, if the notification is active it will display in whatever order it was opened.
In the case of 3G watchdog... it must always run as an active application or else android would shut it down if memory got low. As you can see... that would cause some problems. Hence... to keep the app open they must have it set as an active notification which forces the icon to be in the notification bar.
If the bar bothers you, I suggest using HTCs built in data usage tool. You can restrict data usage with it.
Habits are difficult to break ...

Your explanation makes perfect sense. Thank you!
As you know, it can be difficult to break well-established habits, and I've come to rely on my 3G WatchDog meters (see below).
On the other hand, if I did remove 3G WatchDog, and use HTC's built-in data usage tool, it would give me a bit more space for other apps on my home screen but, as I said, habits are hard to break.
Peter
3G WatchDog Developer's answer ...
Here's the reply I got from the developer of 3G WatchDog:
Hi Peter,
Thank you for using 3G Watchdog.
The space in the status bar corresponds to an invisible notification which is linked to the "Increase service priority" option in 3GW Settings > Advanced. As explained when you check this option, "This feature requires a permanent notification in the status bar. The icon will be hidden whenever possible, but the notification text can't".
Technically this is because Android allows to raise the priority of applications only if they have permanent notifications in the status bar. The underlying idea is that these are applications which must not interrupted even if you are doing something else (e.g. a music player) - the permanent notification stays there to give the user a way to easily control theapps (e.g. pause/restart the music).
I let you update your thread with this answer.
Best regards
Richard
Peter
hi all,
this problem also happen to me. However it wasn't 3G Watchdog causing the problem. It was My Data Manager app which has similar function like 3G Watchdog.
Thx to Maedhros and PeterHTC to give some light of what causing this empty space on notification bar
Data monitoring is built into Ice Cream Sandwhich. I'm not sure if this is the HTC tool you guys are talking about, or if they added their own (that would seem redundant, but redundancy is to be expected with mfg/carrier bloatware; see AT&T Navigator vs Google Maps w/ Navigation). I've played around with it a little bit, it's one of the nicer additions in ICS. Though I'm on grandfathered unlimited, so it's not terribly relevant to me. Still nice to be able to track data usage.
@ PeterHTC & linuxspy
I use "TrafficCounter" and have no problems with the space on the notification bar.
SwitchPro Widget also leaves a blank space in the notification bar while running.

[Q] The phone is making sounds....

So I have my N5 for a couple months now, running stock ROM with stock launcher, rooted with Xposed tho.
Today while sitting around with some friends it made a sound I never heard before, sounds like some kind of notification but no notification was found... I open the lock screen and there's nothing. Then, while I holding it and looking at it the sound beeped again... My friends thought I was an idiot but then it happened again!
3 times in about 2 minutes and I have no idea what it was, there was no indication of anything on screen or in the notification area and I never heard that notification sound before...
Is there any way to find out what that was? Or any place that shows exactly which notification sounds are configured? Cause this is having me worried...
It's been a couple of hours since then and it hasn't happened again.

I had this also before while using a rooted S3. I can hear a faint sound but no notification, although at one point I did notice a toast notification fading. So assumed it was one of the apps I installed that requires root (probably greenify at that time) that is kicking in and that supersu was giving the toast notification.
maybe change the notification method on the supersu you are using or check the logs
I haven't encountered this on my Nexus as I'm not rooted

My wife's GNex was doing this a while back. It drove me CRAZY! I figured maybe it was an app that she installed, but she claimed she didn't install any new apps. So then I thought maybe it had something to do with the phone even though it was completely stock. Then, when she got a G2,she installed all her apps, and it made that same sound AGAIN! I took her phone and tried to figure it out.
Long story short, it was her Yahoo email app. In the settings, it was set to not show notifications in the statusbar. However, it was still set to make a notification sound. I don't know who would make an app that would allow you to hide the notification, but still PLAY THE DANG NOTIFICATION SOUND! Anyways, it sounds like you may have an app installed that behaves the same way?

The only thing I found possible is that I seem to have forgotten to greenify Zedge and when I checked processes last night it had a service running. Maybe that was it? I greenified it after that of course.
Anyone know of a notification sound Zedge makes? I found nothing in settings.
Maybe it was a NFC chip close to some readable tags (like credit cards with tap to pay possibilities)? Check how it sounds...it can be it ...

Stepback! We got a winner!
After you said that I remembered that the phone was sitting on my wallet at the time, tried it again and there's that sound again. So now I know what it is generally but why does it beep? Simply to let me know that there's a NFC card around? Does it read it? Kinda uncool that it reads my credit card when I didn't ask it too...
Yep, it reads it, but only some common data, nothing to worry about . You can check what it reads by installing some NFC app like NFC tools.

Do you have fb messenger installed? For me, it does the ghost notifications. I chat on fb on pc, then I stop. About 1-2 hours later my phone get ghost notifications.
I chat again on fb on pc, then i stop chating on fb. Start using my phone after I stopped chatting on fb on pc. After 10-20 mins I get the notifactions for incoming messages on fb chat on phone even after I replied to them and seen all of them on pc. These notifications disappiers as soon as the notification sound goes off

Aight good to know.
I turned off NFC now as I don't use it at all and I see no reason why it should be running. I guess we always have something new to learn about these phones huh?
Thanks again.

Lol, yes ! NFC Tools is awesome
was it this sound: (youtube.com/watch?v=wrKujB1JACk) ?
This was also driving me crazy for a few months, also slowing my phone down and heating the battery to around 40c! i guess there was something bad on my nfc cards...

~~~~~~ Introduction ~~~~~~
Using Android Lollipop/Marshmallow's lock screen notifications?
Tired of having to press the power button to see them?
Want your phone to turn on new notifications, but only when you grab to look at it?
Want your phone to turn on right when you take it out of your pocket?
Then this app is for you!
Introducing the all new efficiency app Glimpse Notifications:
This all new app fills an annoying hole in Android Lollipop's lock screen notification system. It's nice, it's shiny, but you always need to push that damn power button. This app does it for you, and also respects quiet times and whether or not your device is in your pocket.
It also does this:
recurring notifications (screen on and/or sound)
emulate LED notifications that the system lockscreen no longer shows
Double-tap to lock function for lockscreen
custom lockscreen display time
lockscreen lock-on-cover function
At the same time the app is completely for free and without ads!
Looks interesting, thanks for sharing. I'm an ACDisplay user on an S4 but it doesn't seem to stay active the notification allowed so I'll try this.
thanks for this, it works well
only problem I found is that pocket detection doesn't work on my Samsung Galaxy S6
Yes, been using that one (and others) as well, but I always wondered why everybody wants to reinvent the lockscreen. I'm using a pattern lock and found none of the existing solutions to work well.
Strange. So, have you observed the screen turning on even if the proximity sensor is covered?
I plan on adding an extension to the pocket mode to cover the following use case: if the phone is pocketet or face down and you hear a notification, you typically take the phone and see what happened. Then I want it to turn on, but not necessarily everytime I take it out of my pocket. So something like "if coming out of pocket AND last notification less than N seconds ago -> turn on screen".
Perhaps we can sort your issues with the sensor out on the way.
yes, I covered the proximity sensor and sent the test notification and the screen turned on
I tried a different app that does basically the same like yours and it has the same problem, so maybe it's something related to Samsung?
Linked here from the OP's comment in the ACDisplay xda portal article. Looking very nice so far. Only feature I miss from ACDisplay is the active mode, i.e. screen on when removed from pocket, regardless of notification. This is a great way to keep power button use down, especially for devices like the N5 with known hardware button failures.
Yeah I already assumed people will want that and I'm planning to cover this use case as well. Personally, when I had apps working like that in the past I found it a bit annoying that everytime I took out the phone to put it like on the table it turned on (even if there were pending notifications). That's why I thought about how I could narrow down the logic to be more useful.
Well, I have to say, this is a great app. The only thing it needs is the black list feature, that would really create a full circle of usability and applicability.
Keep up the great work..
Thanks. Well, as a matter of fact I started out with having a black list and found that to be less useful than just marking the few notification sources I'm actually interested in (like Mail, SMS, WA). I'll think about throwing in a switch to configure black/white list behaviour, but it's not top of the list TBH.
Big oops here - I just realized that for the testing notification, I skip all the other checks because I figured it would confuse people if the other other filters prevented the test. Turns out the way I did it it confused us all. I'm going to change that in the next version (which is taking shape).
I tried it out with a "real" notification (by sending myself an email)... still the screen turns on with the proximity sensor being covered
Yeah, I can understand your point, but a black list, in addition to allowing users to block apps whose notifications they don't consider important/desirable, would also allow users to block out any app/process/service that Glimpse may report about, such as 'wireless networks available', you know, things from Android system or System UI, whose notifications just drain the battery without any real purpose.
But hey, it's just a suggestion, it's totally up to you what gets implemented.
Great app nevertheless..
Could it be possible that instead of whole screen being lit up, only the area where notification is shown is lit up in black and white color? Just like active display ?
Korean Firmware update November 20 2015
Well Korea got another firmware update this morning. The update never gave details but here is what I've found so far:
In the settings under Device, there is now an "Auto open apps" option. Basically when you scroll through your apps list, whatever app you stop on will automatically open.
Also in the settings under "connections" there's an alert option now to be notified via vibration when disconnected from your phone.
Under the display setting there's now a screen timeout option. 15 secs, 30 secs, 1 min, or 5 minutes.
Also some bloatware was added. Apps added were a world clock, starbucks, a korean navigation app, and the flipboard news briefing app. There's also a few watchfaces added, nothing new, same ones shown at the initial unveiling. All of them can be uninstalled thankfully.
There's a notification indicator option now also in display. It will make a little orange circle appear on your watchface until you've viewed the notification. Only works if you don't have notifications set to automatically turn on your screen in the Gear Android app.
When reading the text of a notification, it will make the font larger if you double tap the screen.
Cosmetic differences:
now says "add widget" under the + symbol when you scroll all the way right.
On a notification, when you swipe up to dismiss, it now shows a trash can.
For a notification reply, the emoji symbol has been replaced with a more traditional circle happy face.
When you scroll right on the watchfaces menu there's an option to "Add template" now. It then lets you choose from the watchfaces that can be stylized and make a new face from them.
I noticed small cosmetic changes inside the S-health app, but nothing else beyond that. I've found nothing related to sleep monitoring.
Also checked yesterday to see if a reminder can be set using S-Voice, and that is also still broken.
I can't believe they didn't map the top button to toggle most recent app... it's so annoying having to go back to the app screen to get to your music app while running... the button is basically wasted without a double click or long press option.
I glad they brought back the vibrate when disconnected function.
In SHealth I'm able to swipe/twist to the right and get to the music controller, which then returns to SHealth when I press the back button.
Coming from Pebble I expected apps to be persistent and not just to have the watch exit home to the watchface everytime the display times out. It's really nice to have a persistent app for a music player. I could adjust the track or volume without looking at my wrist. And it's also greatly needed for the stopwatch. A settings option for persistent apps would be great.
My Gear app updated this morning, I see no change in the watch. The app on the phone has a whole new layout, but nothing has changed on the watch. Still shows the same J3 software version. I rebooted the watch and nothing. Do I have to reboot my phone? I hate to try this as it always breaks my weather app and I have to totally uninstall all gear apps on the phone and factory reset the watch to get it working again.
If it's not a Korean Watch, just be patient. The app was updated, but they have not pushed the new firmware out to the rest of the world. To confirm this, go to Settings->About Gear->Update Gear Software->Update now.
Ah, I understand now. Thanks, got to excited to soon.
display time out
So I got the update on my classic watch, there is 5 new watchfaces.
There is also a new option on the display settings so now you can choose the time from 15 sec up to 5 min.
If i set the display timeout on 5 min it's nothing change...
So I do not understand what the problem is or the new options mean???
Could anyone help me?
Elvis
You guys are lucky.
In korea some devices that are updated got stuck at booting logo.
I think it will be soon fixed and then you can get this update.
I agree there should be a long press top button feature. The way I deal with this problem is I set long press home to the music player. Then to access apps you press home then press home again.
Encrypted Phone
So I have the Nexus 5X, aka phone is encrypted.
My watch is from Korea and the app does have an update, but I get the error message that it cannot install because phone is encrypted. Any solutions?
My Gear Fit, which isn't actually Tizen, but resembles it a bit, has an option for what you want to do after timeout - return to watch face, or remain on last app. Very handy, and Samsung could certainly add this option, since they already know how it works.
