Is updates for our maxx and ultra's done - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a maxx and I believe they are done with updating this phone due to being bought out by lenova. Anybody know any news on this...
Sent from my XT1080 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Really did you just ask this question? We will get 4.4.2 and even the next update our phones are 6 months old hell moto is updating the RAZR and M how old are they. I so tired of all the negativity against lenova and stupid posts like this one. Fear mongering that all this post is about. Unless you have something of probative value on this subject do me a favor and keep your ? To yourself.

The Lenovo deal is not finalized yet. Google still owns Motorola.
Why would Lenovo not want to update the phone? Also, Motorola is still rolling out updates to the X, after the Lenovo deal was announced. The Lenovo deal was negotiated late last year, and updates still continue. Motorola just announced a new watch that was developed before the deal. Frankly, I don't think anything is going to change.

Lenovo is going to want to start out by keeping their active customer base happy... The first thing they don't want to do is piss off everyone they just acquired. I'm certain Motorola will roll out 4.4.2 before Lenovo takes over. Lenovo should keep updates coming at least until they have their own line of superior phones.

A buyout like this isn't over night. Can take a couple of years to finalize.
Why does everyone care about updates so much?

Wasn't there talks from Google about phones will only receive updates until they are 1.5/2 years old? Or do I have the times wrong.

Kinda but you have it backwards. It was that they WILL received updates for 18 months but that has never really been a firm thing and it's still up to providers. This doesn't mean they will stop receiving updates after that 18 months though. Motorola has shown a willingness to update timely and I have no doubt that will continue. I'm sure the hold up is playing the Verizon game.

From what I understand its not really Motorola that holds the updates. Its Verizon they receive the update for said phones and they add their little programs and secret squirrel crap to the update before the consumer receives it.

So since there is no root for 4.4 without bootloader unlock there is no much sense for VZW to push 4.4.2 =)

Yeah but you gained root on 4.2.2 then took the update. Run an fxz and your root is bye bye because you can't root 4.4

So did I. But portion these people is small too =) All new phones comes with 4.4, problem solved. Most people got updated first and then checked for root options.

That's exactly what happened to me and also what pushed me into the "potential bootloader unlock" game but all said and done I'm glad it happened that way living life to the Maxx is so much easier now...

Lenovo wont even give us there own phones they make money on. Why would they update something they make $0 off of at this point?
Look at there android tablets. I havent seen anything of updates on them in a while.

It's going to be a while for 4.4.2. David Schuster just said on his g+ page " I understand your frustration, we are also frustrated. We have been working to get you this upgrade as quickly as we can but there have been some unforeseen delays with requirement changes. We are actively working on getting you this update."
In other words Verizon is insisting on more ways to make your phone theirs.

All they have to say is NO. But they won't. The Droid line Motorola has made for years any other provider would take if they could get it. TMZ started with these crazy loud videos playing that you couldn't pause or turn off the volume about a year back. With Android 4.4 Google said NO and now the app crashes each time it try to open with a video ad.
If Samsung, HTC, and Motorola got together and stopped letting Verizon screw up there software with extra crap it would all be fine. Apple said NO.. Guess what.. They still sell the iPhone.

Motorola is contracted by Verizon to make the droid branded phones for them. This isn't like the X, or the HTC one, or the samsung galaxy or note phones, or the lg phones - Verizon hired Motorola to make the droids, rather than Motorola coming to Verizon with a phone to sell. Moto has no choice but to follow Verizon's specifications. They can't say no, and they definitely can't update the phone without Verizon's approval.
The iPhone is completely different. The carriers are begging apple to sell the phone, rather than the other way around. Apple has power in that sort of relationship that no other phone OEM has, and probably will have for a long time, if ever.
David schuster said the fix would take "a number of weeks". So, by the end of May? Is that really that long a time?

HTC, Motorola, Samsung

All three of these guys have claimed they will be more developer friendly and intend on providing unlockable bootloaders in their future devices. However, as of yet only Samsung has actually shipped their powerhouse devices unencrypted. HTC has promised to release future patches that will unlock their devices. Motorola made pretty much one statement about offering unencrypted devices but has yet to release any details and all of their devices since that statement (bar the Xoom) have been released with encrypted boot loaders.
The question is, does this have a major impact on who you decide to support with your hard earned cash?
as a beginner in the development industry, i believe Motorola will hold the key from now on. Why? Because Motorola is now Google. Simple as that

I think it still has to be approved...
Motorola-Google is approved today both in the US and in Europe.
As for the question, it does. I want a phone that I know will be maintainable. Even if that is not by the manufacturer. I think of my phone like a car. I spent a lot of money on it and I need it to last for a long time. If the manufacturer stops servicing it, I need to be able to service it myself.
The next Nexus is hopefully a Motorola with an unlocked bootloader.

Droid prime to soon

The droid prime is suppose to be the successor to the droid charge, that's my problem with android. The charge just came out a couple of months back, and yet to receive a major update! What samsung should be doing is updating there flag ship phones first, there just selfish, knowing people will continue buying there new products they just leave us to rot. these phones come out way to fast, can we get a chance to enjoy the phone with gb first? The prime will probably be out before we even get gb smh. HELLO SAMSUNG AND VERIZON, THE DROID CHARGE IS ONE OF YOUR FLAGSHIP DEVICES, UPDATE TO THE LATEST SOFTWARE!, THEY RELEASE A BUGGY PHONE FOR NEARLY 600$ AND I GOT MINE FREE! JUST IMAGINE IF I WOULD'VE PAID I'D BE REALLY PISSED. bottom line is the droid charge is a great phone and I want to use it to its full potential before I upgrade to a newer device.spread the word care for your customers
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
So would you rather they release buggy software prematurely to fix a buggy phone? They've been working on GB (and it's been leaking), which is why I've been enjoying GB for well over a month. Anyways, what you're upset about is the way the cell phone industry tends to work. They're not going to stop updating their model lines just because they haven't put out an update for existing models yet.
Just imagine how Thunderbolt owners feel.
Correction: Droid(Nexus) Prime time is a Nexus successor.

phone envy is frequent for me personally
whenever a new phone comes out i get pissed i bought my previous one
but honestly the prime and charge have little connection to each other...if the prime is a nexus phone then basically its a samsung designed phone that google does the software for, so it would have no impact whatsoever on touchwiz updates for the charge
samsung has submitted dozens of builds to verizon and from what i can see each one gets better and better
is it annoying that there is no official gb yet? sure but the same could be said for the fascinate or even worse no official FROYO for the continuum
vzw and samsung combo equals slow updates
its a reality of buying from those two and its not a secret (droid branding or not)
the thunderbolt doesnt have official gb either fwiw nor the lg lte phone
i personally have an inc2 and wont be pissed when the vigor comes out (same time frame inc2 launch to vigor vs charge launch to prime)...granted i have several upgrades and will probably just go pick that up too
The Droid Prime is likely NOT to be a Nexus device (or else it would have the Nexus name). It's software will most likely be managed by Verizon, rather than Google, and probably carry all of the crapware we've all come to know and love hate.
Phone dev cycles seem to be roughly bi-annually to quarterly, depending on the software and hardware available. At any given time, any one dev shop (HTC, Samsung, wherever) will be simultaneously be working on at least 2 software versions for any given device (as evidenced by the lower build date on the Fascinate's initial GB leak compared to the final FroYo leak).
And to pick some nits with the OP:
supposed, their, they're, their, too
Thank you BGR for starting the DROID Prime rumor. NO ONE knows what the device will be when it shows up, when it will show up, or much of anything else about it. We have a few unconfirmed details, but that is it. The people that do know what the device will be called aren't talking. Also, just because it is labeled with DROID doesn't mean that it won't be a Google Experience Phone. Unless you have physical proof of what you're talking about, it would be great of everyone to stop with the DROID Prime rumor until the actual device name is announced.

Could be that features of TW4 require something specific to the SGS2 phone. Or, Samsung doesn't want to back-port it on their own. Either way, nothing you can really do about it.
If you buy a car, and they change the features on the next model year, do you go and complain to the car manufacturer/dealer like this? You're spending significantly more than $600 for a new car, so I'd hope so...
Smells like buyers remorse in here.

Coming to the Charge from the Fascinate I knew damn well that this would happen but I took it anyway as it was the best option (and still is... LOL bionic), and I don't regret it at all... if you haven't figured out by now that there's gonna be a new phone out every six months or so thats 10 times better than your current one then you must be new to android... I know it must take a lot to try and update the tons of phones a carrier has on each cell provider, making specific coding changes to get it to work with the individual phones hardware and whatnot so I don't mind and will be more than happy to burn an upgrade or drop some money on the new beast thats out at the time

Buyer/owner, whatever...my point was that you sound like you don't want the phone in its current state. I'm running a Gingerbread ROM with the TouchWiz 4.0 launcher. It's called technology ... it's moving forward. Once the phones catch up to the current technology, the onslaught of phones will stop ... just like you stated. The fact you even brought this up, about a phone that details about the phone aren't even released yet. Much less even said to be released on the Verizon network ... is redundant in itself. You're a troll, and must be treated as such. I would ignore any comments this moron makes just for the simple fact he's moaning about a device he may not even see. Not to mention ... Droid Charge isn't even Verizon's "flagship" phone. That would be the Bionic. Have a nice day.

I agree, the way that Motorola has been treating it's customers has been truly ridculous. They have (or so it seems) practically abandoned the Atrix 2 which is a relativity new phone, and their only major phone on AT&T.
Not to say that I regret buying the Atrix 2, it's a great phone, but it's safe to say that unless Motorola majorly revamps their customer service/relations I'll never be buying another phone from them.
I love my A2. They make brilliant devices, but as you said the way they are treating their loyal customers is unacceptable.

[Q] next google phonr

what will the next google phone be? running ICS with a quad core processor. ( i am saying like the Galaxy Nexus) .
They use the Nexus line to release the next version of Android....
So the next "Nexus" will probably be running something like Android 5.0, and no one has any idea what it will look like or have for specs, and Google probably doesn't even know yet.... Its February, and they release in late Q4.
As marton says, you shouldn't expect real info until we get closer to Fall of this year (roughly). Given google's acquisition of motorola, I'm looking out for a Droid Nexus, though obviously nothing's for certain yet.

Marshmallow update for MotoX Syle (Pure) 2015

Everyone don't wet it! The update will contain Band 12 VoLTE and E911. VoIT is in question? I got this info from higher tech support. Took about 4 days to get official answer. I believe this is the reason why we in the good old of USA haven't received this update sooner! They are working out possible issues with this radio update for marshmallow.
it's been known for at least a week or even more (on g+ post)

Do plenty of research first. I sent my 6p back because after 4 days of normal use the frame was twisting. It would no longer sit flat. I carried my phone in my front pocket as i have done with all my phones. I also had much worse reception. I constantly dropped to 3g at work whereas with this phone I don't. If on Verizon there is also no visual voicemail so if you have advanced calling enabled you get text messages instead of a notification that you have voicemail periodically. Your mileage may vary but I couldn't wait to be rid of it.

Waiting for the mm update patiently no problem... My moto pure working like champ, love this phone...
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk
Same here.. got the phone.. it's working as it should be.... there are some fixes you can get from the dev sections... not like this phone came out the box broken that MM was going to make it feel like a totally different phone from what I bought...
You know Nexus phones get the updates right away.. so why didn't you just buy the Nexus instead of the MXPE? Sounds like a personal problem...
C'mon, apologists. Waiting a few extra weeks isn't the end of the world for most of us, but it should've been out by now, given Moto's near-stock software design. The fact that it's taking longer to update their brand new, revolutionary, carrier-free flagship than some competitors' heavily-skinned, carrier-variable models is a very bad sign about Lenovo's priorities.
If 11 months from now we're finding out that the MXPE will not be receiving Android N at all, we can probably look back to this episode and say: "you know, we should've seen this coming." I'm enjoying my phone, but I absolutely don't blame anyone for hedging in favor of the 6P despite a few weaknesses (no expandable storage) because of Lenovo's poor showing this past 3-4 weeks.
So, go to the dev section and install MM...

Can you link to where Moto/Lenovo gave the MXPE an exact date of when MM was going to come out? Last I heard they were rollin' it out in phases... and even then, there were no exact dates... if peeps want to spend more on the 6P/Nexus and not worry about delayed updates, then they should have bought it, but yet, they didn't and are complaining about the "slow" updates on the phone(s) they 'decided' to buy instead..
Go to the dev section and install those MM updates posted there if you guys are really that bent on getting MM on your device...
I can wait, nothing in MM that I really want, much less need, anyways...
A few weeks is nothing. We'll get it.
This isn't like the Atrix and ICS, where the phone was out for a fair bit and also canned once google bought Moto. The phone is new. If other regions are getting it first, then that's just how the testing works.
They really don't want a repeat of Lollipop. I heard horror stories on how badly that update botched the 2nd Gen Moto X.

Do those dev section roms include T-Mobile B12 & VoLTE support??? That's what many of us are waiting for. If it was only a matter of wanting MM then yeah, that's a no-brainer, but no way I'm going through all that crap for a rom that doesn't have the T-Mobile support I've been waiting for all along.
From what I can tell there is no band 12 in the Indian mm but doze works ****ing wonders on this phone even completely stock. I'm on modded marshmallow now and will switch to official mm when its released. Simple enough
