So to make the story short. I got the Captivate back in July at release.. and have been disappointed with the lack of support and updates. My wife who had an old Iphone 3g,(which has become horribly laggy due to having to be updated to the 4.0 crapware), loved my Captivate.
So I told her when the Inspire comes out, I will use her eligible upgrade and get that phone. Once I get the phone, I will trade her phones. Which we did.
Does AT&T disapprove of this? We are on the SAME family plans, have been from years with AT&T. Since AT&T uses sim cards it makes it really easy to do this. Do they consider this a breach of contract? The reason why I ask is when I was on the phone with the Service Rep they made a comment that my lines phone number shows the Captivate not the Inspire. And they wanted what was called the IPC number on the phone. Its my phone, I bought it. But with my wifes upgrade. They said They could just change the IPC numbers on my line and her line to show this but.. I dont want them to get the number then come back and say. That I did something wrong and try to make me pay from something.
What do you guys think? And have anyone you experienced this problem?
They don't care as long as you sign a new 2yr. My store does this about 5 times a day. Just make sure that the proper data plans are on each phone, especially the hspa+ data plan for the Inspire.

My experience is that they don't care. They just want the right phone listed for each line. once you buy it, they don't care if you use it for another line on a family plan.
Yup, I've done this more than once... did it today, even. My son gets my hand me down phones, so I upgrade once a year. If he wants the latest phone, he can go get his own contract.
Did that today as well. They don't care. Just pay the bill.

By the way what is the number they are talking about? She told me to dial something think #66#1.. I cant remember but it will show the phones number. Anyone know how to do it?
Hello, I got tricked into buying a phone that cannot be activated in Sprint. I was in a rush to get a phone for a surprise and just convinced a guy to meet me at work one day so I didn't check with sprint. He said the phone had a clean ESN and that he paid to cancel his plan. My girlfriend went to Sprint to trade to change phones (her screen broke) but they told her the phone was still activated.
So my question is, can I trade ESNs numbers (her LG Elite's into the galaxy S2), or can I simply add another ESNs number and go back to Sprint?
I do understand cloning ESNs is illegal but she owns both phones, and if it is possible what program could I use?

You will not find any help here on this matter. XDA doesnt condone IMEI/ESN cloning in any way shape or form.

Been thinking about picking up one if these as a backup. The problem is that these phones can only be activated on postpaid verizon after 6 months of being active on prepaid. Sort of a deal dealer. Can this limitation be passed? Is there anyone who knows of a way to bypass this and just activate straight on my share everything plan?
Anyone?

since my GSIII decided to commit suicide and I didn't want to spend too much money to upgrade devices when all the new flagships are about to be released, I got myself a moto g.
Good news is that you can activate it directly onto a postpaid plan. I didn't give it a prepaid number to begin with, so I don't know if that would affect anything, but if your phone has no number, just activate it through *228. It failed the first time when programming, but the second time around it worked.

i called a verizon store earlier and was, of course, told that no you could not and it had to be on the 6 months, etc...
so if i pickup a moto g (verizon capable) from best buy, for $100, and just buy the phone and leave (they will let me?) i can then just *228 from the phone itself and port it onto my account somehow?
currently using an iphone 4 on verizon.

My process with getting the phone was walking into target and picking one up for $100, *228 with phone number you want to transfer and the account password (had to search for that) and it activated on the second try.
I most definitely went from numberless to postpaid plan.
Maybe I got lucky because the guy who got the phone for me wasn't the usual guy who takes care of phones. YMMV

I can confirm.
I just bought a Moto G from Best Buy. I turn on the phone, killed the activation. Because I have a business account, I logged into the web, put in the ESN number. Once I did this *228 and it activated with my number and 3g.

Best Buy Verizon Moto G Prepaid - Activated Successfully on Contract
Another data point for a successful activation on a contract plan. Picked up the phone from Best Buy, bypassed the activation screen, dialed *228, and success! Both voice and data are functioning. Hopefully it's a permanent replacement.
For anyone who did this, did you have an old plan without data, and if so, did it force you to change your plan?

I currently have an unlimited data plan and didn't have to make any changes to use the Moto G.

Well the person I'm trying to get this for doesn't have any data plan and uses an old plan from years ago and doesn't want to change. Sometimes the stupid carriers detect you went from a feature phone to a smartphone and tell you you have to upgrade your data plan or else.
Hope it works.

That I'm not sure about. Verizon may very well be able to tell if a newly activated phone is a "smart" phone and requires a data plan. There might be better/cheaper options for phones without data plans.
I just bought one for my Dad, His S3 crapped out and went to try and activate this moto g on my account which is not prepaid and it wouldnt do it not even ask for the #, so I called *22898 for prepaid activation and it says its LOCKED and to return it to the store. Wal-Mart must had not scanned it properly. So I`ll go back get that fixed and hope it can activate cause he can upgrade in 4 months but Verizon wont Budge so no point and buying a used phone for a lot of money for just 4 months.

Glad to hear it worked out for you. I was a little worried when I bought my phone. The clerk at Walmart had to scan it quite a few times. I was worried it wasn't going to get unlocked, like yours.

I have a Verizon grandfathered unlimited data plan with one line which I curently have an S3 on. Over the weekend I bought a working S5 for $80 bucks. Guy said there was no issues with verizon. He even left sim card in it and I discovered it still has service. Well doing a little poking around I found in the 'my verizon' app that the phone upgrade eligibility is 02-2016.
I have an old verizon s3 thats dead with clean meid. Could that be used to swap with the current s5 to release the s5 from contract so that I could move it into my unlimited data account?
Or is there a better way to handle this? I get the impresion the previous owner is just going to abandon the verizon account so im not worried what happens on that end. Only that I have a clear phone that dosnt mess up my unlimited data.

All you really have to do is put your Sim in the new phone and everything will be fine.
The only way there could be a problem is if the guy you bought the phone from is still under contract and he stops paying the bill. Then they will blacklist the phone, but that won't do anything to your unlimited account, the phone just won't work any more.
I have zero expectation that he is going to continue paying the bill. That's why I had the idea of replacing the contract phone with an already dead one then I wouldn't loose out.

Well if his phone is paid for through contract completion or he just bought it out right, then you should be fine. I don't believe they have the right to blacklist a phone that's completely paid for in one way or another.
However, if it's not paid for and he stops paying the bill, there will be a problem.
If you put an old phone on his contract, I doubt that will help you. I would think they will blacklist the phone that's under contract regardless, because they have no right to blacklist your old phone.
That is just what seems logical to me, I don't know their procedure on this for fact.

I do believe you can swap phones while under contract. Ie if this S5 was dropped in water and died, I could obtain another verizon phone that wasn't under contract and swap the phones. It would seem to me then that would release the S5 from the contract but hold the S3 liable. If he defaulted on the contract then the S3 would get blacklisted because that's what's currently in the account under the contract. Or would they still blacklist the original phone even though its not in the account anymore? Anyone know the answer for certain?

you can defiantly swap phones on an account, weather they are paid for or not. i have done it many times. there is no issue, until you dont pay the bill.
i see your point with putting the old phone on, and you may be right. however, i just dont see how they could legally blacklist a phone that no money is owed on. i could be wrong though.
since you already bought the phone, i dont see where you have much options really, regardless of an accurate answer to your question.
just put his sim in your old phone, which will register it to his account. then you will just have to wait it out for a while and hope the s5 dont stop working.

Thank you for the input. If I knew for certain what the answer would be = I want a note 3or4 but the S5 will work great for the time being since $ is so tight. If the phone is going to get blacklisted with Verizon then it goes to the girlfriend to replace her iphone on Straight Talk. If I can get it cleared through verizon then it will be mine and the girlfriend gets my old S3....Hmm will I be able to move it to Straight Talk if blacklisted on verizon?

sorry, i dont know if there is a universal blacklisting that crosses carrier lines.
I mean to get the phone unlocked so I can move it to straight talk.
Just had a chat with Verizon and you are correct. The phone that originally started his contract would get blacklisted.
A customer received a Galaxy S5 (clean IMEI/MEID, not attached to any accounts at time of sale), and they claim Sprint won't allow them to use the phone on their Sprint plan because it's a prepaid phone.
Can this situation happen?
yes. if its a G900P as far as the hardware goes tho, should be able to flash the non prepaid firmware via Odin and use it that way. Might get caught up in the IMEI tho. Carriers do reserve the right to do exactly this, even tho it seems wrong. vzw does it all the time.
Really, all you need is a rep who isnt as up to speed on sprints policies, or is willing to break them (a case of last-day-itis would do it) and get it done. If its a sprint IMEI, and its just in the prepaid database vs the postpaid, it shouldnt take too much to get it moved to the right place internally to get it to where it can be activated.
