A customer received a Galaxy S5 (clean IMEI/MEID, not attached to any accounts at time of sale), and they claim Sprint won't allow them to use the phone on their Sprint plan because it's a prepaid phone.
Can this situation happen?
yes. if its a G900P as far as the hardware goes tho, should be able to flash the non prepaid firmware via Odin and use it that way. Might get caught up in the IMEI tho. Carriers do reserve the right to do exactly this, even tho it seems wrong. vzw does it all the time.
Really, all you need is a rep who isnt as up to speed on sprints policies, or is willing to break them (a case of last-day-itis would do it) and get it done. If its a sprint IMEI, and its just in the prepaid database vs the postpaid, it shouldnt take too much to get it moved to the right place internally to get it to where it can be activated.

So xmas coming around I'm getting asked what I want. I have been wanting a new phone as I've had my OG Evo for over 2 years and my contract is up in March. I was thinking of getting the GSIII but my question is, I've also been thinking of going over to ATT once my contract is up... can I swap the phone over to ATT or do I have to get another again?

Yes you can but then it will be like taking another data plan so you might have to pay extra
I'd really look into this before doing this because everything I see after doing a quick Google search says that no, you can't - the Sprint GS3 has an embedded SIM for LTE that's soldered into the phone. So you can't just pop an ATT or T-Mobile SIM in there.
There might be a way to hack it to work, but, really, I wouldn't waste my time with it outside of "let's do this for a fun hobby" - not "let's do this to use as our daily use phone". For all the work you'd have to do completely taking the phone apart and replacing parts and doing who knows what to get it to work - you'd be better off selling the Sprint phone and buying an ATT one especially if you're not good with that sort of hardware and hacking thing.
I'm going to cut to the chase, and tell you as someone who used to be a Sprint and a Verizon technician, and also someone with common sense (no offense to anyone) that, no you can't make a CDMA phone with no accessible SIM card slot work on a GSM network. The Verizon works with some hacking around, but that's because the SIM card slot is accessible and the phone has the necessary internal hardware. You'd need either the T-Mobile version (it gets AT&T HSPA+, but not LTE), the International i9300, which I use (It gets AT&T HSPA+ but not LTE), or the AT&T version (it does LTE).
Thank you for the quick replies.... So it's safe to assume that any phone I would get on sprint would follow the same course of actions as they're all CDMA. Any advice on whether I could sell my sprint one for the same price or would ATT do an in store trade in for their GSM version????

I'd guess so.
You could try to sell the Sprint one used and buy a comparable used one and maybe break even or only lose a bit to the tune of eBay fees - if you're lucky and patient. And are aware of the risks of buying used and make sure eBay has you covered.
I don't know about in-store trade-ins. Do that do that with phones from other networks ? If they're going to recover costs, I'd think they're probably not going to give you the best deal. I mean, Sprint told me my old phone had a $5 trade-in value, but it's going for $40-50 on eBay (it was an old dumb-phone, so I wasn't expecting much - but $40 is still a lot more than $5).
Personally, I would check out the ETF you have left at this point and probably just pay it if you're sure you want out instead of waiting until March and having a phone that will deprecate in value that you were never intending to keep.

Im currently on verizon and am paying a little more than when I started. My contract is over but I cant take advantage of the upgrade because I would loose my unlimited data plan. My sister and I have a family plan, She pays for 2.5 of the phones and I pay the other 2.5(we both pay half of moms). So I am looking at switching to T-mobile but I have no idea what the coverage is like here in town. So first of I would like to know if anyone is from Waco, Tx. and what kind of coverage they get.
My other option is unlocking my razr and using tmobile for a month. I wouldn't want to loose my verizon plan just in case the coverage here is crappy so I would have to pay for both verizon plan and tmobile. But I want to know if theres a way I can do this without verizon knowing that I unlocked my phone and used it on tmobile. Can I just deactivate the device and activate another one I have?
My third option is using my nexus 7, but I dont think I can make phone calls through it. I was reading through the forum and dont think they ever got that issue fixed.
Any other options? Any ideas?
Hey guys...I've lurked on this forum for a while...But this is my first post. Sorry if this has already been asked a million times or if it's in the wrong forum. But I need help asap.
I had a Verizon Galaxy Nexus but just cancelled my plan because it was getting too expensive. I was going to sign up with Sprint because I get a huge company discount, but a friend of mine just gave me his Verizon S4 because he bought a G2. Anyways...I would rather bring the S4 to a carrier like Straight Talk and avoid getting a new phone an plan with Sprint.
Anyways...I've read a bunch of different threads that have conflicting information. Am I able to active the S4 with Straight talk? I went to their website and found that the phone is indeed compatible. But I am getting two messages, "Purchase an Activation Kit which contains a 30 Day Unlimited Service Plan Card, SIM Card and Network Access Code." and "For your particular phone only the Service Plan Card and SIM Card are needed for activation. The Network Access Code is not required. The SIM Card is in the blue area for AT&T Compatible phones and the pink area for T‑Mobile Compatible phones."
Am I going to get screwed if I buy all this stuff? Has anyone tried this? And if so, do I straight up select an AT&T compatible SIM card even though it's a Verizon phone? Any help would be huge! I'd like to get this done today.
Thanks in advance.
Alright, so this is pretty simple.
First of all, people are going to say the VZW Galaxy S4 is CDMA and thus does not work on Straight Talk and other GSM carriers. They are false. Verizon has been SIM unlocking all of their phones, including the iPhones, for the past year or so.
There is one caveat. You will NOT be able to access LTE. Just HSPA+ or pseudo 4G which is actually pretty fast.
Now, when you sign up with ST, you can choose to go with AT&T or T-Mobile since they piggyback off both services. AT&T has the better coverage but there's a hard 1.5 GB data cap (or so they claim. it is unclear on what ST's data usage policies are). The T-Mobile side has spottier coverage but I hear there are less strict data rules. Mileage may vary. It's prepaid so you're free to try out both sides.
As far as the Network Access Code question, just buy the one with it. I've never used ST but as long as it doesn't cost more, it is better to have the code than not.
sorry for that
sorry for that
I have a question, but I need to give some info on my situation first. I used to have a HTC One M8 from T-Mobile, and because my Wife lives in sonoita Az, the only decent carrier that works out there is Verizon. So I switched from T-Mobile to Verizon. My experience with Verizon in the short amount of time that I've had with them, is not very good to say the least. So let's say I switched back to T-Mobile, but didn't return my Verizon M8 or my Note 3, could I still use it on T-Mobile since its unlocked, or would they flag my IMEI number like they do with ESN numbers and so that I cannot use the phone anywhere, or what ? Please let me know what you think....
Last I heard even if they blacklist your imei on Verizon it'll still work if it's a 4g phone. That being said Verizon blacklisting your phone from them should have no affect on whether it works on T-Mobile.

As long as it's not blacklisted for lost or stolen it will work on tmobile
No, it's not blacklisted as lost or stolen. I just don't want Verizon service anymore. They do not have unlimited data for LTE for sale anymore that's why I'm going back to T-Mobile. T-Mobile may not have the best coverage, but I like their plans and their customer service a whole lot better thanks Verizon's.

You can Google tmobile imei check and run the imei and it will tell you if it can be used on their network.

If it comes back blacklisted, you can still get the imei repaired which is legal because your bringing it back to the original carrier, but they just past legislation making carrier unlocking your phone perfectly legal. Many larger phone repair places can do imei repair, there are some on ebay that do it also, some can even do it remotely for you over the net through the teamviewer software.
Morning all!
I have a Verizon grandfathered unlimited data plan with one line which I curently have an S3 on. Over the weekend I bought a working S5 for $80 bucks. Guy said there was no issues with verizon. He even left sim card in it and I discovered it still has service. Well doing a little poking around I found in the 'my verizon' app that the phone upgrade eligibility is 02-2016.
I have an old verizon s3 thats dead with clean meid. Could that be used to swap with the current s5 to release the s5 from contract so that I could move it into my unlimited data account?
Or is there a better way to handle this? I get the impresion the previous owner is just going to abandon the verizon account so im not worried what happens on that end. Only that I have a clear phone that dosnt mess up my unlimited data.

All you really have to do is put your Sim in the new phone and everything will be fine.
The only way there could be a problem is if the guy you bought the phone from is still under contract and he stops paying the bill. Then they will blacklist the phone, but that won't do anything to your unlimited account, the phone just won't work any more.
I have zero expectation that he is going to continue paying the bill. That's why I had the idea of replacing the contract phone with an already dead one then I wouldn't loose out.

Well if his phone is paid for through contract completion or he just bought it out right, then you should be fine. I don't believe they have the right to blacklist a phone that's completely paid for in one way or another.
However, if it's not paid for and he stops paying the bill, there will be a problem.
If you put an old phone on his contract, I doubt that will help you. I would think they will blacklist the phone that's under contract regardless, because they have no right to blacklist your old phone.
That is just what seems logical to me, I don't know their procedure on this for fact.

I do believe you can swap phones while under contract. Ie if this S5 was dropped in water and died, I could obtain another verizon phone that wasn't under contract and swap the phones. It would seem to me then that would release the S5 from the contract but hold the S3 liable. If he defaulted on the contract then the S3 would get blacklisted because that's what's currently in the account under the contract. Or would they still blacklist the original phone even though its not in the account anymore? Anyone know the answer for certain?

you can defiantly swap phones on an account, weather they are paid for or not. i have done it many times. there is no issue, until you dont pay the bill.
i see your point with putting the old phone on, and you may be right. however, i just dont see how they could legally blacklist a phone that no money is owed on. i could be wrong though.
since you already bought the phone, i dont see where you have much options really, regardless of an accurate answer to your question.
just put his sim in your old phone, which will register it to his account. then you will just have to wait it out for a while and hope the s5 dont stop working.

Thank you for the input. If I knew for certain what the answer would be = I want a note 3or4 but the S5 will work great for the time being since $ is so tight. If the phone is going to get blacklisted with Verizon then it goes to the girlfriend to replace her iphone on Straight Talk. If I can get it cleared through verizon then it will be mine and the girlfriend gets my old S3....Hmm will I be able to move it to Straight Talk if blacklisted on verizon?

sorry, i dont know if there is a universal blacklisting that crosses carrier lines.
I mean to get the phone unlocked so I can move it to straight talk.
Just had a chat with Verizon and you are correct. The phone that originally started his contract would get blacklisted.
