Slow download speed after rooting? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey dear community,
I am a proud Nexus 5 owner, but I hate stock ROMs and I love how many new, useful features custom ROMs pack.
I rooted my phone yesterday (note, this is the D821 device), unlocking the bootloader and rooting the stock rom went perfectly fine, however, when I flashed a custom ROM, the storage was wiped along with the system and it wouldnt boot up, so I went back to stock (I could access the recovery and bootloader, it wouldnt wipe, it would only give me storage mount errors and while mounting storage via the recovery it would show 0kb), this went smooth as well, so I decided that since I have lost my data anyways, I should give it a try and root it again. Root was successful, flashing a custom ROM too, I was happy as ever with many functions that I wished, I installed all of my apps, set the stuff up and so on (everything via WiFi). After that I had to leave and therefore disconnect the WiFi, now that's where the problem occurs, when I try to download anything from the net (even play store) the download speed doesnt even reach 30kb/sec. I tested it with speedtest apps from play store, download wouldnt reach 0.30mbps, while upload was at ~3mbps. I'm really confused at this point, could it be caused by the radio I flashed? (I used a tutorial on how to get back to stock) or is it a carrier issue and it's just a coincidence that I rooted the device when they have some issues? WiFi speeds are perfectly fine.
I also seem to have an issue with switching between networks (eg 2g -> 3g -> 4g)
this is the ROM I am using right now: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606917
this is the tutorial I used to get back to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2513701
I did not check the download speeds on STOCK ROM after returning to stock.
also websites load very fast too.
thanks for reading
edit: it doesnt seem to be ROM related, I flashed another ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525627) and the download speed is still slow.

edit... whoops, apologies..I completely misread your post.

I can't see how root would slow your data down. Are you sure your phone network isn't throttling your speed? Do you have unlimited data with a fair usage policy?

thanks for your reply, I tried your method but it didnt seem to affect my speed at all
I tested the speed on WiFi and I get ~41mbps download and 7mbps upload (thats how it should be with my connection)

Im not limited with my data plan. The speed wouldnt go down no matter what, I've used the same plan for years now and this has never occured before. but Orange recently upgraded their antennas to 4G/LTE so it might be a thing on their side.
I did more research, when I'm on 4g network, the speed is normal, I get 11mbps downs and 3mbps ups, but when it switches to hsdpa or hsdpa+, the download speed goes down so badly that I cant download anything. note that websites load as fast as it should and it should be affected by download speed, right?
I cant see how root could affect it either, but maybe there's an issue with the radio I flashed when I flashed stock ROM back. On the other hand the only thing it COULD possibly affect would be 4g as the US version has different bands for 4g only.
I'm pretty sure it's a carrier issue and it's a malfunction on their side, but I found it quite disturbing that mobile data doesnt work the way it should just after I rooted and flashed a custom ROM.

I switched the simcard with my dads t-mobile, and the download speeds went up to 19mbps on my nexus 5, but at the same time when I tried my simcard in his nexus 4, the speed was good too, but it happened before, so I suppose it's my carrier's fault
and of course I had to switch the simtrays and get it stuck in my nexus 5 I had to tear it down to get it out

EXTREMELY slow connection speeds

I have an HTC Inspire 4G.
I am using it for the FIRST time, and for the first time in the Philippines.
It was an AT&T locked phone, so I had to root it to unlock it.
I followed the ace hack kit v9 instructions to get it to root. Everything worked relatively as planned except that installing CM7 resulted in a looping boot screen. I fixed that by clearing the cache, but I wasn't too thrilled with the new look. I didn't try my mobile internet yet at that point (I was on WiFi).
I decided to flash the ClearDroid ROM since I just wanted stock with root.
Everything works great. Except my cellular connection is AMAZINGLY unusably slow. I had to manually enter in the APN settings for the wireless carrier here (Globe), and that was a little bit of a pain in itself. I took the phone to one of the local stores here and they confirmed the settings were correct. Regardless, I CAN connect. It just takes sometimes 5 minutes to load CNN's mobile site, for instance. Android Market times out.
I had an iPhone 3GS here on the same service and same locations, so I know what I should be expecting as far as speeds here.
What could be causing this?
Philippine cell phone providers use 900/1800 bands.
Inspire 4G supports 850/1900
iPhone 3gs supports 850/900/1800/1900 so thats why you got better data speeds.
Im sure the phone shows an E for data connection next to the signal bars.
I do get G next to the signal bars mostly, actually.
Calling and texting works fine also ... is the data connection that much more sensitive to frequency?
Also, this HTC's page says the Inspire supports all bands for GSM and GPRS. (I'm a new user so can't post link)
What are your data speeds with the inspire, and what are they with the iphone?
One thing you may need to do is to edit your build.prop
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982082
where can i test my data speeds? using test servers outside of the Philippines will probably not be very accurate.
edit: ok i downloaded the SpeedTest.net app for Android. It seems to have several test servers in the Philippines including one 7 miles away. On WiFi I get 1600k down and 450k up (which sounds about right). On 3G I got 999ms ping and -0k down and -0k up. Note that it actually did "run" through the tests, even though it took a really long time. If I disable my connections it won't actually run through the test and will instead give me an error saying it could not connect to the network.
but i should reiterate again that my connection is EXCEPTIONALLY SLOW. when trying to access the Android market, it seems to time out waiting. when trying to use it as a tethered modem, Windows doesn't see a connection to the Internet. loading google.com takes about 10 seconds to load the text, another 30 seconds just to load the google logo. a page like CNN.com took about 5 minutes just to start to appear. data is getting transfered (i guess that is why the connection doesn't time out), but at a very very very slow speed
i no longer have the iPhone, so I can't test, but as far as overall feel, I could get speeds comparable to what I got in the USA in some areas.

G is for GPRS, which has a max top speed around 60kbps down.

ok it looks like it was something to do with the ROM.
I did a nandroid backup and installed CM7 again. Internet works fine right off the bat without ANY configuration (didn't even have to define my APNs).
The thing is I personally don't like CM and would rather use something closer to stock. With this new info, what changes when installing CM or ClearDroid that would be killing my internet?

Flash a stock Rom and see what happens. Make sure you do a full wipe. Clear cache and dalvic too.

As it turns out, the CM APN list is over 3 times the size of mine, which would explain why yours would work out of the box. Thank you for the heads up, I'll incorporate their list in the next build, and hopefully it will make everything work for you also!
well, i decided to copy the APN info from CM7. that seems to have fixed my problem...
Hi ZippyDan
I noticed that you wer able to resolve this issue. Im also using an Inspire 4g but cant get 3g. I wonder what u did to resolve it

Loss of 4G?

I've been trying to troubleshoot this problem for the past 3 days or so. In a nutshell, I'm on AllainceRom (which I have been since released) and get constant 4G signal. Wake up, head to work and notice no signal at all. I check and my mobile data was shut off, so connected it. It gets a connection...3G. Turn on/off airplane mode and still 3G. Borrow friends sim card, boot it up and it's 4G. Figuring it's the sim card, I buy a new one. Call Verizon to activate it, BAMM 4G is back. Within 2 minutes after the phone call, it loses signal, then kicks back on, 3G again. I would hit airplane mode on/off and 4G would pop out and all of a sudden it would go back to showing nothing, then revert to 3G again. Any ideas of what can cause this? I'm baffled. I even downloaded the MF1 versus ML1 and it still shows 3G. My download speeds, a blazing 2 megs. Almost feel like I've been throttled or something for some reason.
Has your phone been working fine before and this just started happening over the past few days? Also do you only lose 4G in certain areas?
I know that it is recommended to flash the ML1 modem on any 4.3 based ROM because of potential 4G issues.
This might sound odd, but I think somehow they are throttling me. I'm on the grandfathered unlimited plan. What's odd is that I can take an old sim card (from Thunderbolt), basically cut it to the same size as my S3, reboot and 4G is constant (this phone is part of my dummy line so limited to 2gigs per month). Take out that card, put in new one, it boots up and has like 4 bars while searching for signal, then drops to like 3 and connects to 3G again constant.
4G has been constant here for the past 2 years, Verizon tech support confirmed no outages. My wife and son have unlimited as well, but iphone 4's with 3G coverage. Thinking my unlimited 4G is getting knocked down for some reason.
I tried a new rom, Clean Rom and same results with signal quality. Just odd it happening all of a sudden with no changes.
Also, with my thunderbolt 4G sim card, mobile network type was listed as LTE. With the brand new sim card they activated, it's showing "CDMA -eHRPD", as it was showing with my old card.

I doubt you are getting throttled. Unless you are using up 100+ GB a month constantly. If that was the case you can call tech support and ask if you are. I'm pretty sure they would have to tell you if they were.
Was there something specific you did to your phone before this started happening? Have you tried different ROMs or re-flashing Alliance?
If you've exhausted all options I think something is borked and you need to reprovision. To do this you would need to ODIN to a stock 4.1.2 base and enter the reprovision code into the dialer (*2767*3855#). This will wipe your internal data so I would back up anything you need first. Once you do that you can re-root and flash a custom recovery then flash back to whatever you want.
Just make sure you don't take the 4.3 OTA if you return to stock unless you want to re-lock your bootloader.
That's the odd thing, nothing was changed prior to this switching to 3G, like it happened all of a sudden. I checked my usage and I'm at 19 gigs this month (yeah I tether a lot).
I tried beanstalk rom (4.4.2) and something odd happened. In preferred network type, under CDMA+LTE/EVDO I would get 3G. If I switch it to LTE/GSM/WCDMA 4G would pop up, but no mobile data so unable to make phone calls. With this rom, I would insert my old thunderbolt sim card and 4G all day long again with no issues.
I guess the only option would be to revert to stock and start all over in hopes it'll switch back. I was hoping it was just the icons jacked up, but at 3G my d/l speed was 2 megs, at 4G it would hit 12-14 megs.

If other SIM cards are working correctly, it can't be anything wrong with the phone. I would either go to Verizon and keep asking for new SIM cards until you get one that works, or try to reprovision like I explained earlier.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'm rocking stock 4.0.4. now and still only have 3G service. Guess I'll just keep it like this and hit up the Verizon store and have them figure it out since it's stocked back out.

I was experiencing similar issues as you this morning. After an hour of the nice lady at tier 1 tech support telling me to erase everything on my phone and that it was probably bc I was talking to her on the phone while trying to fix it I reached a resolution upon calling back. I was sent to a higher tier tech support and they told me that my data was being throttled and it was directly related to my high data usage.
Confused I asked her how that was possible bc they aren't suppose to throttle LTE. She said there is a problem with their system and instead of only throttling 3G, it was now throttling LTE data. She explained this is a nationwide issue and that some people she has talked to have been experiencing trouble with this issue since March 23rd!!
Similar to you I tried another phone, my nexus galaxy only to experience the same problem. The only thing that worked for me was switching my network mode from LTE/CDMA to Global. I could then tether Netflix and use the data connection without being impeded. However, certain functions like my email (gmail and yahoo) and verizon cloud services would say network error or network communication error.
Strangely tonight my phone seems to be back in working order, I'm not sure if its just because there is no network congestion so I'm not being throttled and it will return or if the issue has been actually fixed.
Now that I think about it, it's possible the tech was wrong and it's a CDMA to lte handshake issue they are having which would explain why global mode would work? It maybe that they upgraded the towers to lte advanced in my area causing these types of issues but hard to confirm any of this with verizon being so tight lipped about what areas have lte advanced.
Replied to your post, I'll update once I get back from Verizon.

[Q] Horrible reception-- new phone development

I've started having some horrible issues with my phone connecting to Verizon networks properly. I used to be able to connect to 4G networks at my house and surrounding area with no issue, but now I've been having the worst time getting it to lock. Currently I'm connected to 3G at -99dBm in my household.
I originally was running stock, but fully rooted, S-Off. I've since switched to trying AOKP and now I've settled on Sinless GPe 3.4.7. I have not seen any real difference between them as far as getting a good connection to the network. I started switching ROMs well after I've noticed an issue, and I have not done much of anything to my phone in the last few weeks that I could attribute to the change. I've never dropped the phone or damaged it in any way.
I just recently traveled across the state and would run speedtests next to my wife's iPhone 5c and 19/20 times she'd show full bars with LTE service while I was either on 3G or no service at all. My phone will connect to 4G sometimes though, it's just not that often.
I read that there may be an issue with my SIM card, so I stopped in and had it replaced. The guy seemed very confused about the state of my phone software, so he blamed any issue I was having on the software installed. Regardless I did get a new SIM card installed. It did not seem to help at all. Can anybody help me? I'd hope to not have to go through the hassle of attempting to get the phone replaced!
Bootloader information:
HBoot-3.16.0.0000
Radio-0.89.20.0321
After rebooting my phone, my phone locked to an LTE signal at -112dBm. It does not speed test at over 3Mbps. Testing my wife's iPhone shows her at -100dBm and she was able to pull 30Mbps down.
There is talk of poor signal reception/speed in gpe threads. Cm based Roms, dunno. Try flashing a sense ROM, do some tests and report back
I recommend clean ROM or any other ROM on Verizon base
I just received my M8 yesterday and am having the same issues (both wifi and LTE) running the latest PA. Going to try something with a VZW base and report back.

I reloaded my backup of the Stock ROM and I am still seeing the same issues. It seems to connect sometimes but most of the time it will not. It seems like its just not getting a good lock. I am having trouble even using the phone at my house now whereas I've always had great service here. Doing a speed test now, the phone states 3G service, tested with 705 ping, download of 0.17, upload shot up to 58.19 (which obviously isn't true) and then froze while testing and has been here for over three minutes.

I would run the RUU and try again, and just see if something got boogered
Confirming as well that the reception isn't the greatest with this phone/radio in the so so service areas.
I live out in the country. Never had good reception with Sprint no matter the phone. Switched to Verizon with an LG G2 and service was fantastic at home for the 7 months I owned it. I moved to the M8 and now phone service is spotty at my house. It's the radio for sure. Wifes verizon moto works great at home as well.
I've had the same issue, updated radios, flash back to stock, and everything else. The radio on this phone IMO is terrible, even when it does get 4G I get like 8 mbps down with 4 bars of 4g. Once in a great while i'll get 18 - 20 down with 5 bars of 4g.
I've been experiencing the same things recently as well. It also affects sending SMS messages. I am on stock too (with s-off). Nothing changed on my phone though, it just started dying.
Never had signal issues. I live out in the boonies too. Signal is strong and switching between 3g and 4g has been smooth. I've been able to download torrents as fast as 5mb/s. Speed test results have been just awesome. As far as signal goes, it's been better than my note 3, DNA, and my wife's droid mini. And this is my second m8. My son has the first and it is the same as mine.
I would look into exchanging them if they don't keep up with other phones. The radio in this phone is actually pretty damn sweet, so if u got a funky one, I'd exchange it. Def try the ruu first, then exchange if that doesn't help.

[Q] Galaxy S3 I535 No Service After KitKat Flash (4.4.4)

Hello everyone. I was hoping that some of you that are more knowledgeable about this stuff could help me out here. I recently flashed from CM 10.2 to KitKat (4.4.4), which everything went smoothly for the most part. However, I've noticed that my phone constantly has no service. I should probably state that I live in an area with very low service to begin with, but prior to the flash I was able to get at least a bar inside my house. Now, I'm unable to get anything.
The first thing I could think of to check was my settings in the phone. The data is enabled, CDMA Roaming mode is set to automatic, CDMA subscription is set to RUIM / SIM, and the Preferred Network Type was Global. I wasn't familiar with the global setting as I was used to seeing the LTE / CDMA / EvDo options there. So, when I clicked on it, it now gives LTE, 3g, 2g, 1x, and Global as options. I tried changing it to 3g, but the changes would not save that way. The only way I could get them to save was to power off the phone, take the sim card out and put it back in, and then reboot and switch them. Once i pick a new setting (which is now set on 3g), it locks it and I can't change it again without removing sim card.
When I look in About Phone > Status section, I'm seeing the network says searching for service. The mobile network type is unknown. The service state is out of service, and the mobile network state is disconnected.
Is there anything I can do to fix this issue? If so, I would truly appreciate any type of guidance you guys or gals could give me. Thanks!
I didn't read your entire post but myself and several others have reported signal issues after 4.4.4 flashes on all different ROM types. I think 4.4.4 is just picky about what firmware and baseband you're running. I flashed a few different RPM packages too but in the end I got lucky flashing the BLK3 modem and it seemed to fix my issues. I had noticeably poor signal strength most of the time and a couple times I would look down at my phone and I'd have no signal at all.
Maybe a dev or expert can shed some light on the root of the issue. I don't know enough about under the hood stuff to make an expert diagnosis.
Edit: The unanimous fix that everyone appears to agree on is to flash the MF1 AIO (all in one) package and then flash the ML1 modem only. Problem is finding a legit source for the MF1 aio package seems to be up in the air.
Like I said though, I didn't even do this. I was just trying all kinds of combinations of modems/aio's/ and rpm's and I got lucky. 2 days now with a solid signal at all times. LTE speeds are blazing too, 45 down and 10 up.
Check ur imei number. Or flash a backup and see if that fixes ur problem.

[Q] anybody else having 4g connection issues?

About 3 weeks ago after installing the update of liquidsmooth 4.4.4 i randomly started dropping to 3g service in places that i normally had full 4g available. It has slowly gotten worse to where if im not on wifi, than the phone is pretty much useless. i normally have full coverage everywhere. so i originally thought that maybe something had gotten messed up on the update, so i did a clean install of liquidsmooth 4.4, and blackbird kernal and same thing still occurred. also tried carbon rom and slimrom, and no luck. so for the fun of it, i went ahead and reflashed the phone back to stock from backups and rerooted it, updated the modems and reinstalled liquidsmooth w/ blackbird kernal, and same thing. i have went through all the mobile networks settings and tried everything and nothing seems to help, idk if that update screwed something up or if its an issue that others have been experiencing as well, or if im just screwed and my phone phone is dying.... any help is appreciated thanks

I'm currently running OmniToad, and ran CM 11M8 for a short while. On T-Mobile at least, with the custom ROMs it's normal to see H+ only when data is being transferred; it will drop back to 3G otherwise. When I ran the stock ROM on the Relay, it would always say "4G" regardless of whether it was in UMTS (3G) or HSPA+ mode. Apps like SignalCheck or CellMapper will tell you which mode it is really in.
On the other hand, if data transmission is only going through as 3G, it could be a phone issue or a tower issue. Is LTE available in your area, or are they just getting it set up? I know when T-Mobile was upgrading the Chicago area to provide LTE, there were a few glitches here and there.
It was stupid for T-Mobile to brand HSPA+ as "4G" but that's a different rant.

I'm currently running OmniToad, and ran CM 11M8 for a short while. On T-Mobile at least, with the custom ROMs it's normal to see H+ only when data is being transferred; it will drop back to 3G otherwise. yea LTE has been in this area for quite a while now, i had it with my S4 and it worked perfectly, i never had a problem with the service on the relay either up untill a few weeks ago the internet speed and and data coverage was great, not quite as fast as the LTE on my S4 but it was still more than adequate, i used to use the hotspot and stream netflix on my laptop. now i can usually get a text to send but calls usually fail and if i try and use the internet its impossible. it almost seems like its doing the exact opposite of what it should be doing, as soon as i try and use anything (not while connected to wifi) than it drops coverage to 3g/edge/ or to nothing at all. Im leaning towards the hardware failing side, but i figured i might as well give it a shot and post it and see if maybe i wasnt alone. thank you for your reply.
small note of background on me: first time posting ever in this forum but have been using the tools and roms from it for a long time, so im not a complete noob, but i definitely still have a lot to learn.
