Cracking near the SIM tray? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I took off my case after a drop today and noticed a few cracks near the SIM tray and power button.
Is this a common problem?

damage to your phone in a cheap case is a common problem. which case do you use?

One of those $2 quicksand hard cases from eBay.
Although I doubt it was caused by the drop since impact was at the top of the phone (back cover cracked open slightly)?

The shock of the impact travels throughout any rigid material unless it is specifically designed to dissipate the vibrations. But it's not a car so I very much doubt it does that, so I would expect it is indeed related to the drop.

edit - if the drop didn't cause it what are you saying is the cause? im confused

Don't like the bit "you took your case off" you did all to protect it.. Frightened to look under my Spiegen...

Its definitely the shock traveling through the device from the impact. Its not a unibody design so the different parts such as the mid section has very minimal stress levels due to its isolation from the back panel. And if you notice the crack appeared to have occurred in one of the weakest parts of the bezel. Also its a very thin plastic with an extremely thin bezel.

I have a crack exactly in same spot. I have always using Spigen Neohybrid case.

The crack seems to be very common in all of the nexus 5 phones I have worked with. I have swapped out several screens and all of them had a crack near the sim tray and a few below the volume buttons.

exact the same on my both nexus 5

I've been considering buying an N5 so I've been keeping an eye on eBay, and there are lots of N5s which have that crack. Every seller says that it doesn't cause any problems, which I believe, but it's clearly some sort of minor design flaw.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/hairline-crack-phone-t2717845

I also have cracks. 4. By sim tray, volume buttons, jack and usb. I have a red one, if it matters.

Yeap, i also have this crack + one on the bottom part of the volume button

My phone have them too.

My red N5 have two cracks - volume buttons and jack... and I use a spygen case, too. This is a design flaw, IMO.
Plus: if you press the area between volume buttons and the rear panel, you'll be able to activate volume switches.

Same here few months ago...
Google refuse to replace my phone because it's a cosmetic default wich "don't affect usage of the phone".
So I call the support few weeks after and I says that I've some untimely reboot. They send me a new phone immediatly...
A lot of people have this problem and Google replace some of them but not all...

my device has also that crack issue. what I did is I bought a slickwrap skin. and it looks good now!

Mine was cracked and the piece fell off out of the box brand new. Never affected the functionality.

Mine also has crack as on photo. Mine has Spigen hybrid case from first day so my thoughts are that it is factory defect, and that spot is a weak spot.

Nice hard case for a female

The missis saw this and fell in love:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HTC-DESIRE-Z-COVER-LOVE-HARD-PHONE-CASE-SCREEN-/380285594871
There are quite a few on ebay of the same ilk but with different patterns. I'll report back again once I get it.
nice find and for us that want more of the male-designs here's the link
http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=m570&_nkw=%09+FOR+HTC+DESIRE+Z+COVER
I'm awaiting reports regarding quality and how good does it fit.
I was thinking about getting her a clear acryllic case but then she saw the pink one lol
I bought BLACK HYBRID HARD CASE COVER FOR HTC DESIRE Z +FILM from the link above and it fits well. Only disadvantage is additional weight on the bottom part of the phone and if you pick up the phone using top part only, keyboard will open. Gravitation ...
I'm reasonably happy for the time being but I think I will buy leather case in future.
Can someone post side on pics please? Are they 2 separate pieces that just click on to the front and back yeah? Is it hard plastic or rubber or what?...
I was hoping for a one piece hydro gel case but none available!
EDIT... Yep two bits. Hard case with a soft touch rubberized coating.
Does it stick to the inside of your pocket?

I bought one of those hard covers for £2.90. It's a deep red. Gorgeous colour. Mine's like a matt anodised finish. I already have a screen protector fitted so didn't bother with the one that comes with the case.
Yes it's two bits. They snap on easily and haven't yet come loose. No it doesn't stick in your pocket; it's a smooth plastic. I did have a couple of ultra-thin sticky-out bits, from the mould I guess, which I easily trimmed off with a knife.
Look right, it's £2.90 to protect your Z. I'd suggest splashing out if you're at all cack-handed like me.
They call it the RED HYBRID HARD CASE COVER FOR HTC DESIRE Z +FILM and it's sold by "londonmagicstore". In case you're wondering, I'm nothing to do with them.

I managed to drop my phone on hard floor (tiles) and it survived thanks to mentioned cover. Unfortunately cover got damaged a little bit. One small part, that makes cover sticks to the phone is broken. I'm going to buy another cover since this one saved my phone.
I also will check what's available in Hong Kong. Most covers I've seen here are for iPhones, but maybe I will find something for HTC.

OK, so I recived it yesterday.
It does look really nice, I'll get some pics up when I have time.
The bottom half fits well and doesn't come off.
She complained that the top half keeps coming off. What i did was when I put it on, slide it on to the top of the phone then push it down onto the bottom half of the phone. It seems more sturdy.
Ill get her to test it out today and see how it goes.
The screen protector is quite good. We got a mirrored one which looks quite fancy. It is properly cut to fit the screen. It also has a cut out for the ear piece and a cut out for the light sensor.
All together with the case and the screen protector it has totally changed the look of the phone.
Desired effect achieved
Managed to get a few photos up. Over all its a nice looking case with an OK fit. She had some problems at first but after I fitted it properly its only happened once. The screen protector has a few scuffs on it after a couple of weeks use, its not very good. The case has a couple of scuffs where the paints scratching off it.
Guys, I'v had one of these hybrid soft touch plastic cases on mine for 2-3 weeks now,.... But because she is so beautiful I'm prone to taking the case off when I'm at home just to look at her.
Today I have noticed some little nicks/dents where the clips snap on and off!!!!!!
If you are unlike me and happy to leave it on all the time you will have no problem, I was clicking mine on and off 2, 3, 4 + times a day.
I'm gona replace mine with a gel one now. Ah well,.... I hope you guys can learn from my mistake.

I was wondering for those of you that don't have the wifi death grip issue could you please post pics of your back cover & phone. I want to know how you guys aren't having that issue since majority of us are.
Thanks

No they don't. There are slight differences on the back case of some devices. Some users that were comparing sensations that had different screen manufacturers noticed that.
What I don't know is if those small differences really affect the death grip

The main difference as I have read is let's say "copper made looking connectors" number. The covers with 3 connectors on top side mostly do not have death grip, while those with 2 have, as I have too Below are sample pics found on the net.

I have a back cover with 3 connectors at the top. Came with the phone. And I assure you, I DO have the death grip. Sitting 10 feet away from my router will drop it only 1 bar, no problem. If I'm in another room, holding it in landscape will drop the connection completely in about 10 seconds.

Very disappointing and annoying case.. I thought that the cover with 3 connectors on top could solve the issue Wonder how did the HTC allow manufacturing defective units and after all send it to the customers as accurate
Oh man, that's nothing. You want to see defective, just wait until your touchscreen starts acting up and you can't drag the ring to unlock your phone (especially for an incoming call...)
If your Sensation only exhibits the grip of death, you're doing OK!

Same exact here. I have the 3 copper things on the top portion and if I am in a room about 15-20 feet away from the router, I can lose my wifi completely if in landscape mode.
Same here, I have 3 pins and the death grip.
I have 3 pins and no Wifi issues or dead screen issues. This most likely has something to do with the dates of manufacture.
no death grip at all even when i cover the whole phone with my hands still no death grip, i also have the tmobile rubber case.

It's so weird that some have it and some don't. Is it something to do with the router settings cause I have the 3 pins as well and have the death grip issue......luckily I don't have anything wrong with the screen being unresponsive. Since Rogers is launching the Evo 3d i'm thinking about getting rid of the sensation........I just hope before my decision someone finds a fix for this.....thanks to everyone who posted pics of there back covers.....My back cover is dated 2011-05-22
I have 2 pins with no problems either

Should you get a case for the LG Nexus 4?
Advantages of having a nexus 4 case
-(obviously) Protection for your phone
-Can include a stand so you wont need to hold it all the time
-Extra grip
-Can make your phone unique
-Sturdy hardware buttons to prevent accidental pressing(Varies throughout designs)
-Prevents it from getting dirty
Advantages of not having a case
-Glitter Glass shows(Shows alot better than transparent cases)
-Easier to swipe from the edge of the screen (Cases pop up at screen edges)
-Logos are more noticeable
-Looks better
-The smooth texture(Unless you want grip instead)
Cases give you grip/protection/.(recommended just in case something happens)
If your careful with your phone and like the special design then you probably wont be needing one covering your nexus. So in the end, its just protection VS looks.Press thanks if you made a decision on whether or not you want to use a case!
I think you missed the fact where THE WHOLE PHONE IS MADE OF GLASS

Case vs No Case?
I would go with case. My phone took a dive off my car after I set it there for literally 3 seconds (vehicle was not in motion at all). It made one small crack on the right hand side. Not a big deal right? Wrong. The digitizer failed on about 25% of the surface area right in the middle of the screen. In plain english that means no touch response on the screen, originating from the crack and extending the full width of the screen. This makes it difficult to text as it knocks out the T key in portrait keyboards and the message send button. In landscape it's also difficult. While a cracked screen may not seem like a big deal, it does suck when you have to drop ~$80 for a new digitizer/LCD.
The phone looks beautiful without the case, but it's not enough to justify the risk.
I've done both ways. Mine is currently naked... But it makes me a little nervous. Just can't find a case that I'm really happy with.

OMG. This is all so dreary.
Look at your last phone. If its a mess and you're a clumsy git... get a case. If your old phone shows few signs of use then forgo the case.
Simples.
I cracked the back of my phone the first week I got it. A pallet jack just bumped my leg a cracked it by the speaker. This phones as fragile as the soft spot on a newborns head.

I always have front and back protectors for the glass but the only times I use a thick sturdy case is when I'm at the gym or know there is a risk of breaking for example when I went hiking

Some time ago I got one of these cases from eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BLACK-CLEAR...G-GOOGLE-NEXUS-4-E960-ACCESSORY-/350692488954
I've been really happy with it. It's decently slim, seems like it provides pretty good protection, and with the translucent back, you can still see the original back of the phone (or dbrand skin in my case). It's very inexpensive, and the only downside I've found is that it makes the power button a bit stiff. Hasn't at all been a deal killer for me, though.
I use the OEM bumper case. Just yesterday I dropped my phone from waist height (about 3 feet) onto a tile floor and except for a few faint marks on the silver trim along the top of the bumper (that side hit the tile head on) no issues. Everyone who saw it was amazed I wasn't left with a cracked screen.

Boring words:
Case's color is pretty close to the Graphite back. Similar to the OnePlus One from what I remember. VERY grippy feel with a rough-ish texture. Almost like something that has been Plastidipped.
Lip above the screen is about 1-1.5mm; no more than that. All ports are open and laser autofocus is free to beam away. Buttons are slightly recessed below the cutouts, but this is actually a benefit for me as I kept accidentally pressing the power button any time I fumbled around with the phone. I really enjoy the large cutout for the fingerprint reader as I use the sides of my finger for it to feel more natural instead of poking at it. Larger cutout helps me just rest my finger over the sensor instead of having to poke my finger through a tighter cutout. For someone who said "nothing larger than my Nexus 5, please", this case doesn't make the 6P any more hard to handle than it already is; it's very minimal.

Very nice setup you got there! I Will order this case as well because it's similar to the Pelosi case for the OPO. Thanks a lot Dude! Now what color....
Thank you for posting pictures and doing a review of the case. I just ordered this case on eBay using my eBay bucks. Basically got the case and a tempered glass for free on eBay
I've always loved the texture of these cases. It reminds me of the oneplus sandstone.
I'm curious though, being that the texture on the inside of the screen is "rough", do you guys think it will scratch the phone over time? Especially taking it on and off?
Thanks for the review. Does the lettering feel like it could be peeled off? I prefer a clean look without the branding.

The inside is a little bit more smooth than the outside is. Still textured, though... I'll most likely switch to the Spigen Thin Fit once that arrives and this will just be a back up. I prefer Spigen's soft touch coating.

It's printed on so I don't think it'll be coming off any time soon.
The top and bottom is not protected though if it falls.
I had a similar IMAK case for my Nexus 4. Held up really well until it melted in the hot hot Australian sun (forgot it in a compartment on top of the car's dashboard). I certainly don't blame them for that.
The texture for these things is very unique. If this is the type of protection you are looking for, I highly recommend this.

I'm not too worried. Dropped my Nexus 5 on concrete once with the Spigen Ultra Fit that has an open top. The way these are designed, the top and bottom of the device doesn't make contact with the surface due to the lip around the top of the corners. It's just enough to keep it off the ground if it were to fall that way.
Does the case scuff your phone at all when taking it off / putting it on? I had a similar case for my N5 back around launch and removing the case and putting it back on eventually scuffed the soft touch plastic. I'm worried it might mark up my 6P's chamfered edges or that tiny plastic bezel on the outside of the glass.

(UPDATE: Google Replaced my Pixel) Pixel 2 Frame Cracking

I bought a Pixel 2 recently, and does anyone else have the frame cracking for them? On the left side of the device, below the sim tray, where there is a plastic notch. For me, the crack starts at the plastic and runs for the entire depth of the device. This is strange because my phone has always been in a case, never been exerted with lots of pressure or dropped and I would imagine that Google's R&D would try and avoid this issue. Does anyone else have this issue? Do you think Google would be able to send me a replacement device?
Pictures attached.

Pretty sure that's the part of the phone that almost instantly snapped in jerryrig's torture test. You should watch it if you haven't already, and definitely try for a replacement if you can
I have a case on mine but I thought the body was made out of metal...that is what it felt like and what reviews have said. The primary complaint I read about anything "plastic" was that the white/gray version had a colored plastic power button while the black was metal.
Edit: Looked up the durability tests and it appears this is a known issue if enough pressure is applied. That area is where the antenna is located. I would try to get a replacement...under warranty. You'll just need to convince them that this was normal use...i.e. you weren't bending it on purpose, or sitting on it in your back pocket or something. Thanks for sharing....I don't ever abuse my electronics but obviously I'll need to take care of this phone.

Yeah, I'm currently under the process of trying to get a replacement through Google, I'll update when I get a response back, so others can know if they are covered. :good:
I admit it puzzles me why there is an antenna band there, given that there's a bloody big glass window just above it. I'm sure there's an engineering reason, but it's not what I'd have done.

Aesthetics maybe? I've seen older phones where you could see it on the back of the phone and it was noticeable. Not sure. Regardless, I'd rather have durability and performance over aesthetics. Regardless of how "beautiful" a phone is, for me the cost alone means a case and screen protector (which is also still an issue for this phone...all the tempered glass ones I've looked at show a halo around the edges). I would gladly trade aesthetics for a little more durability or performance. That is why I bought the phone...I knew I would put it in a case so I had no interest in "glass back" or other features like that. As an engineer I actually like the minimalist design...although I do wish the bezel areas were made more functional by increasing screen size I guess, there's always a tradeoff in performance (the primary reason I selected the Pixel 2 over S8 or V30), looks, battery life, and durability...although there probably doesn't have to be.
Update! (After a long a** time)
It took them so long to get back to me, they said only 5 days but it took weeks, but my device was approved to get replaced. It's being picked up tomorrow. Although Google took so long, I'm glad that their customer service (not response time) was helpful. I did have to escalate the claim but it went through nontheless. I'm certain that if your device is cracked, if you pester them enough, they'll get a replacement for you a lot quicker than I did.
