I just picked this surface up last night, it had 55 updates that I let install. Then it said 8.1 was available, it would download half the way then stall and give me error code 0x80240031. Any thoughts? Thank you.

You just have to try again, it does happen sometimes, just keep trying. Jim
You may also want to reconsider updating as the jailbreak will no longer function
It's brand new, no jail break or nothing
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
My point was that 8.0 has a jailbreak whereas 8.1 does. If you update to 8.1 you wont be able to jailbreak in the near future.
Oh that's fine.

On second thought... maybe I should figure out the benefits and what I can do with jail breaking it. I've always been android, so not sit what the surface is capable of.

With the jailbreak you can run third party desktop applications whereas without the jailbreak you can only run the desktop programs that come on the device already. They still need porting specifically for windows RT though in most cases.
The jailbreak is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2092158
And then there is a list of software to go with it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2092348
Got some nice little gems in there, if this doesnt concern you too badly then go ahead with the 8.1 update.
I finally got it to update, but now I'm getting furious. Getting another error code. 0x8020002e when installing a simple ****ing app. This is getting old quickly.

are you on a metered connection?
How can I find out?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
That is probably a no then, and the only known thing to cause that error to occur across multiple platforms.
Open the settings charm (mouse to right of screen or windows key + I), Change PC Settings, Network, Connections, Select the connection and under data usage it has a metered connection toggle. It being on seems to cause that error, but it wont be on unless you set it to be on.
Otherwise I cant find anything about why that error would occur and only a handful of people experiencing it, all of whom have had it go away after a system refresh, but you've just gotten a whole new machine which should have sorted that.

Just wondering, since iOS is a much more closed echosystem. Do they get forcecloses (or whatever they call them) with their apps.
Recently I've gotten a few forceclose when trying to use the Navigate app. It annoyed me, since this is a google product running on a google phone. Just had me wondering if iPhone has same issues?

I used to have an iPhone. I had about the same number of force closes on it as I have my skyrocket which is to say very few.
My android tablet however gets a ton of force closes. I suppose it depends on which android device.

Obviously being on a ICS leak the past month one would expect more FC but I will say my iPhone did have less issues with apps crashing on a whole. But some apps would have issues. I would say apple tends to have issues more with individual apps than general issues like I get with Droid. One is really not better than the other in this case. As usual, its more of the app programmers than the OS that will cause these issues.

The apps crash every now and then, but I attributed it to jailbreak tweaks. I can't remember it ever really crashing when it was stock. Maybe once or twice.
A good deal of force closes are caused by the user. No properly knowing how to use the device. And there are ways to fix force closes. Unless its an actuall problem with an app. Just invloves some reading
I had a friend whose first gen iphone froze up completely and he had to wait for the battery to die before he could use it again.
I'm on stock Rogers ROM (I'm not even rooted). And I've gotten forcecloses for trying to go to the home screen (home.android), navigate app, the dialer once or twice force closed, the SMS app. These are suppose to be the stable core apps, I was just surprised that they forceclosed.
I was just curious if iOS had the same problems for their core apps?
iOS apps don't throw an error on the screen when they have a problem, they simply close. Apple likes a polite crash instead of supplying a useful message stating the app you have might be a pile of crap.
You would be shocked at how many iPhone users don't realize just how often their apps die.
I hear a lot of them brush it off as them accidentally hitting the home button or something similar. That's when I give my signature response... "It crashed you moron."
My wife has an iPhone 4 and she was shocked when I pointed out that her apps had in fact crashed.
Sheep will be sheep I guess.

More like 4 phones (3G, 3GS, 4 and 4S), two different screen resolutions and 3 major versions of iOS.
Some people still use a 3G and a lot of people still have a 3GS, myself included.
Apps are not 100% compatible between them and the 3G only supports iOS 3.1.3 and below.
The 3GS runs 5.1, but it's slow as mud.

I think you have to go to advanced wifi settings and select never stop wifi while sleeping. I'm not sure, but its possible that if the device goes to sleep while downloading large files the wifi is stopped after entering sleep mode and if the download is not finished by then...

So I rooted and flashed Roms on a macbook by connecting my N5 via USB. Now my first macbooks data is corrupted. I thought this might be the fact the macbook is 4 years old. So then I try my Dads macbook pro because my phone isn't performing as well and keeps freezing and going into a bootloop. So I connected it to the pro and then about 45 min later, the macbook pro doesn't even turn on. Does anyone know anything about this? Do I have a virus on my phone possibly?

Sorry I was just being vague figuring someone else might have had the same problem. But first off I rooted and flash Franco first on my macbook. And everything seemed to work fine. Then after trying to flash PSX ROM, my phone started to run into problems. Like the first one was that something like the UID? had a problem with the system. So then I tried undoing the ROM and putting on cataclysm. This is when my Mac started to really get slow. My Mac just started crashing and so then I tried to flash the stock image because coincidentally my phone was rebooting like crazy and also crashing when trying to open certain apps or trying to do things to fast. While doing this my mac crashed when I was in the final stage of flashing my stock. So some kind guy on here helped me put everything back to stock. He also helped me root and flash Franco and cataclysm ROM. (Now started from when flashing the stock image on the phone successfully, I was using my dads macbook pro since my macbook didn't even boot up and was stuck on the apple logo) so after flashing everything my phone kept on getting into bootloops. So I tried putting everything back to normal, but then my macbook got unbelievably slow. So tried restarting it and then that macbook got stuck on the apple logo. I don't know what the hell is going on. Even as I'm typing this, my nexus 5 typing is laggi g like crazy!?!

OK really OP, it sounds like you didn't know what you were doing. First, wipe your Nexus 5 clean so you fix the lag and go back to stock. I decided to root my handset yesterday, all went well and that handset has been rooted successfully. I've kept it entirely stock, no ROM or kernels. I am experiencing what seems to be a connectivity issue. If I connect to WiFi my signal bars turn white, indicating a connection to the Google servers however, when I disconnect my signal bars turn orange.....full HSDPA signal but are orange.....stranger still that I am actually able to connect to the internet with no issues. I've searched and people are saying that the orange signal bars indicate no connection to Google servers and in turn this means no internet connection? Does anybody know of a fix or have an explanation? All was well before I rooted and unlocked the boot loader.

Rooting can't cause this. Can you receive gmail?
That's exactly what I thought! I've rooted handsets before and never had an issue connecting to Google servers etc. Yeah I can receive gmail, but I need to do it manually, it doesn't seem to be pushed through like before. Orange bars means that you are not connected to Google servers and cant receive notifications, it does not necessarily mean that you are not connected to the internet.
Try doing a factory reset.

If Chaco81's solution works, please let me know.
As several others have mentioned to you, it means you are not connected to Google services. This happens to me randomly, and I have yet to find a solution. Sometimes I just wait it out, and it magically starts working again after a few minutes. Sometimes I reboot, and that seems to work 75% of the time, but because it isn't 100%, it makes me think it's no different than waiting it out, it just makes me feel like I'm doing something. This has happened to me on various ROMs (including stock) on my Nexus 4, Moto X, and Nexus 5. It is very frustrating, and I can't seem to locate a cause or a fool-proof solution other than waiting.

I highly discourage doing a factory reset for this problem, especially if you have no backup program like Helium or Titanium. I have never had to do a factory reset for this problem to correct itself, and seeing as it happens to me randomly no matter the device or ROM (and I always do a full wipe moving between ROMS), I do not think this is actually a solution. I think this is just like what I consider rebooting, it doesn't fix the problem, it just adds time in between the problem starting and the problem stopping naturally. Even if it is a 100% sure-fire fix, it will take much longer to reset and fix everything back to how you want it than to just wait it out.

Easiest way to fix it is to get on a WiFi connection. Once it connects to WiFi Google will sync and then turn off WiFi and you will have white bars. This tends to happen to me when my data coverage is low and speeds are down. I don't think the slow speed is able to reach Google servers thru the downlink. Just my thought but I have no clue.

It is completely stock ROM with xposed and gravitybox installed. Apart from that, its pure stock. Even at that the only things I have activated with gravitybox is the notification shade and circle battery mod. Nothing has been touched in way of kernels, radios, WiFi, telephony tweaks etc. Really don't fancy having to reset my device entirely, thanks for the suggestion but I'm not planning on restoring it back and setting it up all over again. As for the WiFi suggestion, it worked for 3min 27sec (yes I timed it) but then, low and behold, the orange bars were back. I've been reading on some Google forums that its an issue in 4.4.2 but it was working fine prior to me rooting. I even put it in to safe mode to see if it was an installed app that was affecting it but that turned up nothing.

^ OK thanks for clarifying. There are many potential reasons for this issue, so it is hard to track down.
Do you have other android devices? Do those work without issue, in your area, over your cellular connection?
If so, the problem isnt related to your Google account, or your cellular carrier, and must be device related.
If its device related, don't do a factory reset. Instead back up everything you care about and flash a factory image.

yeah, Im running CM11 and stock 4.4.2 rooted, unlocked and with run time ART on N7 and N5. I see this on both ROMs. On stock the icons turns orange for cell and wifi.
