Rooting destroyed my two Macbooks - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I rooted and flashed Roms on a macbook by connecting my N5 via USB. Now my first macbooks data is corrupted. I thought this might be the fact the macbook is 4 years old. So then I try my Dads macbook pro because my phone isn't performing as well and keeps freezing and going into a bootloop. So I connected it to the pro and then about 45 min later, the macbook pro doesn't even turn on. Does anyone know anything about this? Do I have a virus on my phone possibly?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app

Its not a virus. Viruses cannot cause devices to not turn on.

What do you think caused both macbooks to have their data corrupted? I plugged in my nexus and both got fried. Now my dad is pissed and I need to explain to him it wasn't because I tried rooting and unrooting on the macbook
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app

Yeah there's no way that running a couple of terminal commands from a Mac to a phone can do any of this.

In order for anyone to help, you must be more specific in the steps you took prior to developing the problem.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app

Not sure if trolling or serious.
Unless you ran destructive commands using root, there's no way this happened.
What commands did you run? What tools did you use? Did you use a toolkit from the forums or did you download one from a random website?
Other than that you sound like a sheep, should have stuck to iPhones kid.

Sorry I was just being vague figuring someone else might have had the same problem. But first off I rooted and flash Franco first on my macbook. And everything seemed to work fine. Then after trying to flash PSX ROM, my phone started to run into problems. Like the first one was that something like the UID? had a problem with the system. So then I tried undoing the ROM and putting on cataclysm. This is when my Mac started to really get slow. My Mac just started crashing and so then I tried to flash the stock image because coincidentally my phone was rebooting like crazy and also crashing when trying to open certain apps or trying to do things to fast. While doing this my mac crashed when I was in the final stage of flashing my stock. So some kind guy on here helped me put everything back to stock. He also helped me root and flash Franco and cataclysm ROM. (Now started from when flashing the stock image on the phone successfully, I was using my dads macbook pro since my macbook didn't even boot up and was stuck on the apple logo) so after flashing everything my phone kept on getting into bootloops. So I tried putting everything back to normal, but then my macbook got unbelievably slow. So tried restarting it and then that macbook got stuck on the apple logo. I don't know what the hell is going on. Even as I'm typing this, my nexus 5 typing is laggi g like crazy!?!

Give us more info about exactly what you did, what commands you ran etc.
sent from my hammerhead

That's not what we meant by steps you took.
We want to know if you used command lines and what commands you typed in.
Or if you used a toolkit program on your macs.
Otherwise no one can help or will have the patience.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app

OK really OP, it sounds like you didn't know what you were doing. First, wipe your Nexus 5 clean so you fix the lag and go back to stock. Then, figure out what you spilled on your macbook's to break them because obviously, it wasn't the terminal commands. If you really can't figure this out, head the Apple Genius bar, because we're not there with you to diagnose the problem. It wasn't the ROM or rooting, its something else. Sorry.

I was the one that got him set up using ADB/Fastboot on his Mac. I have to say, I'm pretty miffed at this. I've got an 08' MBP that I've been using to mod my phones and I've never ran into any sort of issue with the MBP itself. This is odd...
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

No, he's not trolling. I stepped him through step by step how to get ADB/Fastboot working on a Mac and restoring back to a factory image in Hangouts the other night. I just don't understand how he could have toasted 2 computers modding a phone...

Hey guys, first off I am not trolling. Secondly I did not spill anything on the macbook. But i just went out and bought a new macbook. Also I unflashed my Nexus so it is back to stock except for the fact that the bootloader is unlocked still. So now a new problem has arisen. my phone is still rebooting and draining a ton of battery because of it. I think i might just have a defective device. I'm going to contact google about this because no one seems to be having this problem. And I'm on stock now so I'm at a loss now

I'm not sure what's going on. I literally stepped him through setting up ADB and Fastboot on a Mac, even had him send me screencaps and we had it working fine, so I have no idea what's going on. Cut the dude some slack.

To fix your macs is easy bro just hold the option key down when booting. Select recovery on the gray screen, that should fix your macs. For the phone: always do a cache and dalvik erase.

Why not? You can build Android natively on a Mac as its Unix based. Second best option besides a Linux Distro, and a hell of a lot better than Windows. No driver issues, etc...

OS X is based on FreeBSD and shares unix ancestry with the Linux-based Android OS. In reality its much "funnier" to be modding on Windows.

what's the first thing you did with your Nexus S?

I just got my phone today. Still getting used to it. Not used to the keyboard at all!
First thing I did was get YouTube working then get stupid zombies
What did you do?
I came from HTC magic (sapphire) then to a Sony x10. So this is my 3rd generation device.
Is there any point to rooting this phone outside of customizing the ui or overclocking?

Don't get me wrong. I understand there are benefits to rooting. But never have I seen a phone with less advantage of doing so. My x10 was loaded with garbage software that needed to have root access to remove. I shouldn't have too see boot animation often and am not a big believer in huge quadrant scores.
What exactly will zip align do for me?
(charged Battery to max)
fastboot oem unlock
Well, I left mine stock for like a few weeks. I then decided to root so that I could overclock it. Eventually I found myself flashing Cyanogenmod 7. I believe that half the fun of owning an android phone is flashing different ROMs.

Wiping efs/radio partitions

With other phones I had, there were scripts to wipe the eds/radio/GPS partitions in between roms and it made sure that you would not have data problems and it kept everything fast. Has anyone or could anyone make us one?

ROMs for this device don't flash the radio. If you zeroed out the radio you F'd up your phone something good. Nobody has figured out how to reflash the radio on this device. Also, we never touch EFS. That is a big no-no and another way to F'up your phone. Sounds like you nuked it something good.

I have the same thing, where it is not showing my phone number in the about phone. I also have to reset the radio at-least once a day to get data back. (Go to airplane mode and back) The cell works fine though... Weird, never had this problem with original GB rom. There must be another cache partition that needs clearing?
that, I have no idea but my girl had data problem for 2wks now and no rep seemed to know the answer.. I had 3 replacement phones for her and nothing, 2 new sim cards nothing.. My last option of my own was to change number, and guess what.. It works now. By the way, problem was data would stop, browser would redirect me to web2go and say I have no data plan and 1.99 charge to continue. just a reboot would fix it but its a hassle. Well, changing numbers helped.. Something deffinetly went wrong with that other line or something.

Nexus S 4g problems

The problem is with my wife's phone.. In the last two months or so her phone has been having trouble with random restarts and apps force closing, Triple Town for example.. She feels like her phone has a virus, should I download an AV app and try?
Her phone is completely stock, running 2.3.7.. I am not super tech savy by any means. I know how to flash roms (with a bit of research of course) and whatnot but her phone is her life. She's so close to throwing her phone out of the window on the freeway.
I am completely baffled.. And could really use some help from the XDA community. Thank you in advance, if any more information about her phone is needed feel free to ask.

Odin Not Working in Windows 8

So, from my own experience so far it appears that Odin 3.x does not work in Windows 8. The app will lock up the entire operating system while flashing.
Is anyone else having this experience?
I haven't tried odin, but MTP locks up the OS when I try to rename a file/folder or drag something into a different folder.

Good lord. Everyone knows that there are plenty of people (especially on internet forums) that are afraid of change, and the departure from former Windows releases scares them. If you don't like it, cool. Don't upgrade. Stop trying to convince the world not to use it. Not liking Windows 8 is a matter of opinion, not fact. I'm really disappointed that so many people cant just let it go. Stop hijacking other peoples honest attempts to solicit help to bash the product, please.

Carrier IQ removal

here is a step by step guide for removing carrier IQ, you will need root
download android tuner play store link
click on application manager
click / pivot to apps tab
click the button on the bottom that says user and it will change to system
longpress on android system
click open
click details
pivot to all the tabs and uncheck anything with carrier iq in it
uninstall (MAKE A BACKUP) LADDM.apk (it may be in system or user, check both)
remove lib files "libiq_client.so" and "libiq_service.so" from /system/lib (use a file explorer like root explorer with rw permissions)
install a ciq checker (voodoo's is good) and see if anything is left
presto!
credit to sn707 for making the original post, i just added the step by step for people new to removing ciq

the biggest benefit i had from removing it is stopping the useless processes from running and eating my battery life away. personally i don't really care about the data collection (that much) but the wakelock induced by it was driving me crazy.
it being so easy to remove (and to revert if you want to for warranty or ota purposes, so long as you back up whatever you remove) is also a pretty good reason to get rid of the spyware.
nice make sense. thats why my Android under battery keeps being like 5-6 hrs keep awake. nice!

Rebooted, stuck in boot loop. Also doesn't look like the 855 methodology for recovering from boot loop works on the 850. Any ideas how to recover from this, or am I hosed?

If you took the exact steps as in the op... I'm not sure. When I had your problem I had just gone in and disable those two files, rather than all of the files.
Sent from my LG-D850 using Tapatalk
Went through the steps again and no bootloop this time. I am going to lean towards user error the first time, though I usually check things twice.
I actually managed to get everything running without flashing. Mind that I do have a G2, but CarrierIQ works very similarly on both the G2 and G3 as far as files/services are concerned. My problem was that I deleted the 2 files before disabling the apps/services themselves.
With a good bit of time and finger tapping, I was able to get the Disable Service app installed and was able to disable the CarrierIQ services. That removed the looping dialog box.
This might not work for everyone, especially on the G3, but it's worth considering if you deleted the files and rebooted without disabling the services and don't want to reflash.
Worked flawlessly for me. Thanks
