what's the first thing you did with your Nexus S? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my phone today. Still getting used to it. Not used to the keyboard at all!
First thing I did was get YouTube working then get stupid zombies
What did you do?
I came from HTC magic (sapphire) then to a Sony x10. So this is my 3rd generation device.
Is there any point to rooting this phone outside of customizing the ui or overclocking?

I got advanced task killer.

The first thing I did with my Nexus S 4G was root it, install recovery, make a backup and start flashing Roms and Kernels.

Don't get me wrong. I understand there are benefits to rooting. But never have I seen a phone with less advantage of doing so. My x10 was loaded with garbage software that needed to have root access to remove. I shouldn't have too see boot animation often and am not a big believer in huge quadrant scores.
What exactly will zip align do for me?

(charged Battery to max)
fastboot oem unlock

Well, I left mine stock for like a few weeks. I then decided to root so that I could overclock it. Eventually I found myself flashing Cyanogenmod 7. I believe that half the fun of owning an android phone is flashing different ROMs.

I went right to the about screen in settings to my first android phone out the box with 2.3.4.. It took me three weeks to root the stock, flash a kernel and that reminds me I didn't create a back up smh. Okay time to power off and get to it.

unlock the bootloader, CWM, create a backup, then root the phone.

Smashed it against the wall.

I download all my apps and test how they work with the nexus s , then check all the apps working time like the camera apps, and I root a few weeks after (mainly for battery indicator )
I'll try cm7 and miui soon tho

Performance Issues

My Captivated is rooted and Im having a lot of performance issues. I unloaded some apps and its still having problems. The biggest issues is delayed response. This happen from messaging, to suing the touchscscrreen./----Im going to leave this typo because it happens of the screen freezing--/ . This happens way to frequently. Please tell me I can fix this myself, I don't want to send this off for a new one. I hate that process.

you can follow all the steps to root your phone and reset and blablabla...
or you can wait for the software fix, which nobody knows when to come or nobody can guarantee to work.
or you can wait for 2.2, which is supposed to be faster but you never know.
or you can exchange for another phone and probably have the same problem.

I wouldn't mind playing the waiting game if just a couple of bugs. But what's a smart phone if it doesn't can't handled being used. I figured it was something I did cause the phone didn't always freeze like this. Is this the lag people are talking about?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Do a reset. However don't use Titanium Backup to restore system data. It will funk stuff up a lot of the time.

I had the same issues, first get rid off any task killer app you have. Second download the One Click Lag Fix app. These steps increased my phones speed drastically. You can also use a program called Autostarts to control which apps load at boot. To do the last to tips, I believe your phone had to be rooted.

Back before this nice app we had to use a script at boot to change the settings this app now does. Y'all got in on Android when it was getting easy to do everything. I had to root by cmd prompt and use a list of commands now we have one click rooters. I am kinda jealous.

You definitely don't need an app killer. Eclair is set up to kill apps when memory is needed. I find things to be buggy when I use an app killer. Use launcher pro. Much smoother than touch whiz. Root with SRE. When all the att crap is gone the phone functions like it should have out of the box even if you disable the OC. Lagfix is optional but doing all these things really makes the phone fly

Does anyone know of an App killer that will not allow certain apps to start up and run in the background, IE; bloatware?

I am not real comfortable with any of the process's yet. I tried one click and was never able to move off of the Desire (no sound) ROM, so I returned the phone and go another one. I come from a Captivate that I Rooted hundreds of times, with no incident. So hopefuly a more automated version will come out to Root the Inspire

If you're holding out for a root method for the Inspire that is as true "one-click" as the captivate, you'll be waiting indefinitely.
There are fundamental differences between the two phones in terms of root-ability.
Seriously, the inspire is completely rootable. Your inspire is no less rootable than mine was or any others who have had success.
If the root process fails for you, it is because you overlooked something. Bubbys tool, along with Zonderion's video, produced a rooted phone, with fully functioning sound, for me, and many others.
Having TiBU functioning and able to remove bloat was the primary reason I wanted to root. You will never truly and completely be free of the bloat unless you root.
A properly-made gold card is CRITICAL (format FAT32, allocation size = 32KB).
Having JUST the drivers, without HTCSync installed, "safely removing hardware" (unmounting) the card before switching the USB mode, and basically giving it the chance to do its work, even if it seems like its taking too long, are all things (among others) that need to happen in order for the process to properly complete.
Zonderion's video, if you replicate the actions you see him doing EXACTLY, even down to the way he formats the SD card, will work for you, assuming you starting from a fresh phone.
The only thing I did different than him was use a 4gb card instead of an 8gb card.

[Q] New owner with a couple of questions

I've had my phone for almost 2 weeks now.
First Android and touchscreen phone ever owned.
I have a few questions:
1) How do I clear only certain calls from my call history? I only see the option to clear all call history. On my old phone (Nokia N82) I was able to erase only certain calls made (for example, the last number dialed).
2) How do I lock my screen? Right now it autolocks on its own after a certain period of time. I want to lock it own my own like I could do on all my old phones.
3) What is the best FREE forum posting app out there?
Also, I tried to root my phone last weekend, but something went wrong and for a second I thought I had bricked my phone.
Thankfully, everything is okay but I do not plan to try it again for obvious reasons.

Can you also recommend a good FREE forum posting app?
I know there's Tapatalk, but it's not free.
1)when you go in to your call history just long press the number you want to delete and choose delete form call history
2) One suggestion is go to settings>security and change the lock time to immediate
Hope this helps

Want the new Android Market?

http://www.androidcentral.com/grab-new-android-market-app-while-its-hot
You might have heard that Google was rolling out a new Android Market, complete with book and movie rentals. You also might have heard it would coming in the next few weeks. Well thanks to an anonymous source (possibly with a time machine) you can grab it today.
Hit the download link, and install it from your SD card like any other app. Fair warning -- we don't know if there will be any complications from doing this, but we haven't seen any so far. Use your best judgement. Discuss it in the forums!

If your running tpgb ninja your rooted, so you don't need the sideload machine, just go to settings>applications>and check unknown sources. Then put this apk on your sd card and use file manager (an app installed in ninja) to select it and install.

It's not a "method" really, it's just.. installing the app, the same way you would any APK. Doesn't matter how you get the url to the APK to your phone (email, chrome to phone, typing it in by hand).

Nexus S 4g problems

The problem is with my wife's phone.. In the last two months or so her phone has been having trouble with random restarts and apps force closing, Triple Town for example.. She feels like her phone has a virus, should I download an AV app and try?
Her phone is completely stock, running 2.3.7.. I am not super tech savy by any means. I know how to flash roms (with a bit of research of course) and whatnot but her phone is her life. She's so close to throwing her phone out of the window on the freeway.
I am completely baffled.. And could really use some help from the XDA community. Thank you in advance, if any more information about her phone is needed feel free to ask.
