Nexus S 4g problems - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The problem is with my wife's phone.. In the last two months or so her phone has been having trouble with random restarts and apps force closing, Triple Town for example.. She feels like her phone has a virus, should I download an AV app and try?
Her phone is completely stock, running 2.3.7.. I am not super tech savy by any means. I know how to flash roms (with a bit of research of course) and whatnot but her phone is her life. She's so close to throwing her phone out of the window on the freeway.
I am completely baffled.. And could really use some help from the XDA community. Thank you in advance, if any more information about her phone is needed feel free to ask.

Not a virus.
Sounds like you need a good old fashioned factory reset.

+1 on the factory reset.
Sync everything to ur Gmail account then just try the reset.
If ur stock then it should be get back to where u were once u resync Gmail contacts and market apps.
Good luck
Vs Nexus S 4G

Thanks for the input. I will have to do that in a while.

My wife is very fussy with her phone ... has little tolerance for issues which may develop. I simply rooted her Nexus, installed Oxygen rom ... problem solved. Never even so much as a hiccup.

Performance Issues

My Captivated is rooted and Im having a lot of performance issues. I unloaded some apps and its still having problems. The biggest issues is delayed response. This happen from messaging, to suing the touchscscrreen./----Im going to leave this typo because it happens of the screen freezing--/ . This happens way to frequently. Please tell me I can fix this myself, I don't want to send this off for a new one. I hate that process.

Backup your apps with TITANIUM BACKUP and flash back to stock. Then I would install the sre.

you can follow all the steps to root your phone and reset and blablabla...
or you can wait for the software fix, which nobody knows when to come or nobody can guarantee to work.
or you can wait for 2.2, which is supposed to be faster but you never know.
or you can exchange for another phone and probably have the same problem.

I wouldn't mind playing the waiting game if just a couple of bugs. But what's a smart phone if it doesn't can't handled being used. I figured it was something I did cause the phone didn't always freeze like this. Is this the lag people are talking about?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Do a reset. However don't use Titanium Backup to restore system data. It will funk stuff up a lot of the time.

I had the same issues, first get rid off any task killer app you have. Second download the One Click Lag Fix app. These steps increased my phones speed drastically. You can also use a program called Autostarts to control which apps load at boot. To do the last to tips, I believe your phone had to be rooted.

What he says is good. Also get AutoKiller. Set it to preset Extreme. Enjoy a fast phone.
Oh. Disable the upload settings features.

What did you backup your apps with... Titanium Backup?
Did you install Auto Killer?
Back before this nice app we had to use a script at boot to change the settings this app now does. Y'all got in on Android when it was getting easy to do everything. I had to root by cmd prompt and use a list of commands now we have one click rooters. I am kinda jealous.

BTW what are the lag issues everyone talks about? My best friend has the Captivate which is why I am on the forums. I am trying to stay up to date with his phone. I have the Evo.

I use astro. Then use app brain to keep them up to date.

You definitely don't need an app killer. Eclair is set up to kill apps when memory is needed. I find things to be buggy when I use an app killer. Use launcher pro. Much smoother than touch whiz. Root with SRE. When all the att crap is gone the phone functions like it should have out of the box even if you disable the OC. Lagfix is optional but doing all these things really makes the phone fly

Help rooting Quench/Cliq xt

After setting up SDK Manager and installing motorola 4.9.0 drivers, in device manager, I see that Mot composite adb interface has a warning. I checked the properties and it says it failed to initialize (code 37). Anyone ever come across this? I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times to no avail. Just hoping to root and need a little hand.
Dude, all the Cliq xt info on rooting can be found over at modmymobile.com forums, plus a good custom recovery, and quite a few Roms.... more rom's on simplyandroid forums also....
I practically lived there til I got rid of my Cliq xt

Sounds like a driver issue. if you install the wrong driver for something thats the same error code you will get. not sure if thats the case but i thought id throw in my 2 cents haha
Thanks to both of you, I apologize for lack of forum etiquette. I'm sure i've got the right drivers though

Iir I had to install the Motorola flashing program, the name of which eludes me at the moment .... to get the phones drivers set IP properly for it to be visible from adb ... if your on windows 7 one or the other of those apps have issues working right without launching it as administrator by holding shift, and right clicking and saying run as administrator then.answering yes to the dialog that pops up

Rsd lite is the official moto tool.... be careful with it, you can brick your phone EASY with it... make sure you read Skirilax_CZ posts on momymoto forums thoroughly as well as the full details on the custom recovery ..... knowledge from reading the forums is free...bricking your phone beyond fix and having to buy another cause your warranty is voided isnt

No problemo..... that was a great little phone....I was so disappointed when moto decided not to officially support it after 1.5 after saying the would get it to 2.1 for months...
I left T-Mobile over it, burned almost 400 bucks buying it o. Release day, and got no satisfaction on seeking an upgrade or replacement for less than the same.... sad little company...was with them almost 7 full years and they could do nothing useful for a "valued" customer....
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Thats vile dude. Im On rogers and I guess if im thoroughly unhappy with the phone and say its problematic there is a refurb program for 50 bucks. Sounds Decent and I may go down that venue. Ive been wanting to root for awhile because as a canadian rogers said no to the 2.1. Ive accepted it and am going about the "other options". Mostly for multitouch. I know its a little faux pas to compare roms, but do you have any good suggestions for a rom. Im thinking either barely blurred or adlxmod 2.1.54 consolidation as they appear to be the two that everything works for the most part.
Sent from my MB501 using XDA App
Most all of those roms work well...the only hiccup is the speaker toggle issue.....different ones are worse about it than others...
Basically when you get a call...you might have to switch the speakerphone off and on for the other party to hear you....iir same holds true if you make a call....
FWIW, before I passed it to my brother, I was using the latest official Motorola motoblur release, still based on 1.5, but I had manually gone thru and stripped out a lot of the bloat....mostly stuff I'd never use, including the Amazon mp3 store that ALWAYS runs in the background eating mass resources. I'm actually kinda fond of the happenings widget, and how motoblur integrates all the contacts so well across social networks....the downside is if u move off of a motoblur device, you loose all your motoblur contacts...so if you haven't been keeping your Gmail contacts updated, well.you'll spend a few hours like I did keying them over manually.
Happenings is cool, cause it shows every status posted by every friend on Facebook, so you don't miss anything, and always know where you left off last time you were there.
I enjoyed being that connected, YMMV...
I think overall, the fastest fully functional rom I ran was the vanilla one based on 1.5.... basically makes the device function exactly like a stock mt3g or g1....just with more ram and app storage.

Nice. Thanks. I got the adb interface working last night. Installed on a different pc. Ill let you know how it goes.

Got it!
Rooted and Flashed a 2.1 rom with motoblur features still in it. ADLXmod 2.1.54-2 Consolidation was the name I think. It's sweet. Thanks again for the back and forth and help. I agree the XT is a deadly little beast, underrated and now unleashed.
Yeah, very solidly built, 256mb ram....why it never took off is beyond me.
Gratz on the new Tom. That sounds awesome.
How're the issues with making voice calls. Does it work right now?
Might need to try that rom on the one I gave my brother.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
voice calls are no problem, there was a speakerfix by a dude named @firesnatch included in the rom itself. you can hear it automatically turn the speaker on then back off. I often use the 3.5mm jack into my car stereo so voice calls on that have been 100% normal/flawless. I highly suggest it as it's got some sweet stuff built in like wi-fi tether, titanium backup, and clockwork's Rom Manager. Loving the launcherPro as well, because adlxmod also uses the motoblur HOME ui (dialer on left/apps in middle/contacts on right) but with the launcherpro UI I've got 5 shortcuts instead of those three, and at that - those shortcuts are customizable.
Sweet! Ill have to set that up for my bro. How well does Tom Manager play with jr0dd's recovery

what's the first thing you did with your Nexus S?

I just got my phone today. Still getting used to it. Not used to the keyboard at all!
First thing I did was get YouTube working then get stupid zombies
What did you do?
I came from HTC magic (sapphire) then to a Sony x10. So this is my 3rd generation device.
Is there any point to rooting this phone outside of customizing the ui or overclocking?
I got advanced task killer.

Don't get me wrong. I understand there are benefits to rooting. But never have I seen a phone with less advantage of doing so. My x10 was loaded with garbage software that needed to have root access to remove. I shouldn't have too see boot animation often and am not a big believer in huge quadrant scores.
What exactly will zip align do for me?
(charged Battery to max)
fastboot oem unlock
Well, I left mine stock for like a few weeks. I then decided to root so that I could overclock it. Eventually I found myself flashing Cyanogenmod 7. I believe that half the fun of owning an android phone is flashing different ROMs.

unlock the bootloader, CWM, create a backup, then root the phone.
Smashed it against the wall.
I download all my apps and test how they work with the nexus s , then check all the apps working time like the camera apps, and I root a few weeks after (mainly for battery indicator )
I'll try cm7 and miui soon tho

[Q] STOCK HTC Sensation?

Hey! So my girlfriend is going to upgrade to her first Android device. She's coming from a Blackberry Pearl.
Anyways, she's not into rooting and all that jazz, so I'm just wondering how good is the STOCK HTC Sensation? No mods or anything like that. I know there will be trouble with the battery a lot, but is there anything else?
Thanks in advance!

In depends on what you want to do with your phone, but you can safe your battery during fourty hours, even if you do some calls, send a lot of sms, listen music, use a little Wifi and GPS, and also internet navigaton. But if you play, you will not be able to safe battery, even if it is normal with the awesome game on our days.
It is just a question of good settings, and you can be sur you are able to find everything on XDA Forum.
or you can root it for her and install a stock 1.50.531.1 rooted rom that has all the bloatware removed. I am working on one and should be completed by thursday night. I will have all the apps in the data folder so you can uninstall them as well. I am new to modifying roms but have already done a few for the evo.

[Q] ICS OTA but cannot get data connection

I installed the ICS update OTA (672.1.18.MB865.PSHAsiaRetail.en.03). Everything else works ok (data was preserved) but now I can't get a data connection. Calls and SMS are fine and I made sure data connection is on and I double checked my APN. I'm from Singapore.
In addition, a minor problem was that "Add group to home" for app groups doesn't create a shortcut on the home screen like it's supposed to.
Can someone help me with the problems?
I am too having the same kind of issue after ICS OTA..
Initially thought it was network issue but soon after realized its with the mobile only, sometimes i do get the data going but that too for a short period only, did a factory reset, wiped the cache nothing worked.
System version 672.1.18.MB865.AsiaRetail.en.03
+1 Same here - sometimes I have data connection, most of the times I don't. But to be honest, I had this problem with GB too.

I am really liking this ICS build, minimalistic, almost no bloatware, clocked at 1.2GHz.
Missed few of the goodies in GB initially, thanks to the great devs and senior members here found few alternatives for them, like PlayerPro for GB music player, Executive assistant for the social widget and so on..
It doesn't have to be about ROMs or moddings, these little things on XDA are also as useful. XDA Rocks! !:good:
