[Q] Trade for Nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have the G2 and I have a buddy of mine offering to trade it for a 32GB N5. While I know that its basically the same phone I am more encouraged to simply because I feel that the N5 is more future proof.
Am I wrong for this ? Or should I keep it

Trade trade trade! Definitely the nexus will always have Dev support.

Stick with the G2 im sure itll stay up to date with custom roms, also it has a more vibrant display, better camera, and better battery so i personally dont see why you would trade, flash an aosp rom and youll have close to a nexus experience

Then I'd stay with the g2. People will tell you the nexus 5 battery is fine and will last the full day. But in my experience, it is like 4-5 hours then you have to carry a charger to top up the battery. I'm using my old blackberry for work which is more reliable in my opinion. Yes, the nexus 5 is snappy, but lacks a decent battery. It's like 1/3rd less battery than the g2 last I checked. Good luck

Haha, fair enough. It was my backhanded way of saying I'd take the Nexus. It is true though, the battery is fine but not outstanding. I don't go anywhere without a usb cable.

If you use any phone as a computer you will be disappointed with the battery life. In my experience the n5 battery is just about as good as the s4.

Check out this thread, a lot of Nexus users are reporting good battery life. So good or even great battery life on this phone is possible,if you use battery friendly rom, kernel, know its setups, and also Greenify can save a lot of battery also.

If you don't mind about smaller screen,go for it!

The G2 may have slightly better battery life. Slightly.
Just gotta know how to setup for battery life.
Here's my N5 life. Note the averages at the bottom. An average since February 25th....not just a few days.

Personally I chose the N5 over the G2, and do not regret it at all. I know the battery is smaller and the G2 supposedly takes better pics, but in decent lighting the N5 can take pics just as well. It was the design factor and overall construction that made me choose the N5. Seriously, the LG and Samsung phones look soooooo generic in my opinion. I totally value battery life, external memory and great displays, but I would still choose the N5 purely because of design (even though the difference is minimal). That train of thought can be compared to why people still love and use the iphone 5, even with the smaller screen, the IOS is just really user intuitive and smooth, and even though the Android has caught up significantly, I am still waiting for the large screen iphone 6 to come out, but until then my N5 will be my main and only phone!

Oh yeah and to all those saying they have bad battery life, they must be doing a hell of a lot and all the time too, because I get BETTER battery life on my N5 than on my 3000mah Sony Xperia Z1 (but then the Z1 has had bad reviews in terms of battery life).
When I go to sleep on a full charge and wake up the next morning, I usually lose about 3%, and with regular use at work, I can go through the whole day (including listening to music to/and from work, around 1.5 hours total). When I get back home and check my battery, I still have between 30~50% left (depending on how heavy I used it)
I am running a custom rom with stock kernel, with Novalauncher, and 3 pages all with widgets, on FULL screen brightness all day long. I play Candycrush type games, browse the web, check facebook, send text messages, and just generally use it quite a lot.
Just FYI

Get the N5. I went from an S3 to the N5 16gb and love it.

Hey, I used to use a stock ROM, with only root. But right now I'm trying out the Xenon HD and franco kernel, I'll try to see if I can feel any difference in the battery dept. and update this thread after a couple of days.

Why don't you swap your phone for lets say a week and if you can't get along with the battery you swap back?

Any tips for saving battery in bad signal area?

I know this is normal but it seems like its the worst with my thunderbolt. If I'm in a bad signal area, my battery just tanks. Worst then any other smartphone I've ever had. I'm running CM7, but I'm pretty sure it did the same when I was stock. I know I could technically go into airplane mode but I don't want to do that. Does turning off data help at all? I don't have any sync turned on so I don't think anything is trying to connect that can't but I'm not sure. Any hints or suggestions?
when I'm home I constantly have X cause I'm in my basement. I just have the Toggle switch set to 3g since 4g isn't available.
Go into this and whats your biggest drain? (i keep display at 50% 100% of the time)

Well IMHO, one of your biggest issues is that you're using CM7 in the first place. I know plenty of people have great battery life with it etc. etc., but I'm with you on this one. I work in a restaurant 14 hours a day with horrible cell phone reception cause the building is just all concrete. My phone just diesssss, but when I check into my battery life, its all ass backwards.
Take scoobarSTI's picture, and look at your battery info. You'll see that Display for you is probably taking up 5% of your battery life. 5 F-ING percent. While android system, cell standby, and cell idle take up an estimated combined 70% or so. It's just something with CM7 i guess. Hes using a sense based rom. For right now, CM7 clearly still has is quirks, but for great battery life with bad reception, CM7 just ain't gonna cut it.
I did help myself just a teeny bit, and that was by setting profiles in SetCPU. It gave me maybe an hour extra a day to my battery life.

try this app and see if it helps. Your phone may be searching for signal but I know finding 4g signal kills its quick.

automatically connect to wifi "if" the place you are at has it.
get extended battery
try another rom
thats about all i can suggest. good luck!

All that app does is do the same thing as hitting #*#*4636*#*# on your dial pad. Take you to a "testing" menu and hit "Phone Information". On sense roms, you'll have "CDMA Auto/LTE" (or something like that) selected under "Set Preferred network type". On the AOSP roms, we have it selected as "Unknown". If you switch out of "Unknown", i'm pretty sure, you can't reselect it, which means no 4g. We have the equivalent to this in our network setting menu.
I just never found much of a difference in toggling between 3g and 4g in AOSP anyhows

Not positive why, but Slayher used to tweet that it could bork your data to the point you would have to reflash the rom
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA Premium App
Well today I went with just toggling data off and it seemed to have helped with my battery life. Not sure if I just got lucky and had a good day at work or what. It happens every once in awhile but hopefully that works for now on.
Switch your phone to CDMA auto (PRL) to disable the LTE radio at least, otherwise all you can really do is put it in airplane mode. IMO signal loss is the number one problem with battery life on the TB, especially if you don't have a 4g signal.
Depending on the rom you're using, there may be a shortcut in settings, otherwise dial *#*#4636#*#* to get to the radio options.

This is ridiculous!

What I hate most about android.

you need to upgrade to CM7. i was getting about a day and a half. right now i'm at almost 7 hrs and its just under a quarter of the way down.
This is on xboarders ota update zip, I was running cm7 prior to this, but I'm trying to sell/trade this to get an iPhone 4 so I flashed this over cm7, my battery life wasn't that much of a difference on cm7, stock, faux, eaglesblood, bionx or using the uc /ov faux kernel, its really android in general they have yet to release a phone that I'm satisfied with as far as battery use, if i still have android when ice cream sandwich /cm8 comes out and I still have this issue I'm going to the iPhone.

Okay. Assumptions just from looking at the graph....
Phone was awake with the screen on for about 2 hours straight? Is that normal usage for you? Screen on for 2 hours may take about half your battery depending on what you're doing while it's on.

And this will probably continue to happen as I've heard the level of synchronization that Android does is a lot higher than that of the iPhone and there is a lot of data transfer in the background associated with any widgets and apps are running in the background among other things. Never used an iPhone so I don't have any personal experience. Just what I've heard.

i dont think youre going to get much more battery life that that on any phone with the screen on 3-4 hours will drain your battery, if thats your regular ussage might be smarter to invest in a netbook or laptop.. even those will only give you a couple hours battery lol i dont think manufacturers make phone with users who keep them on 100% in mind =/
specially since youre on 4g too, 4g drains the battery alot faster than wifi, screen on 2hours + 4g 3-4 hours of life on a charge isnt something to get all emotional about
also investing 20$ on ebay for a 3500mah battery or 2 of them, its what people who want to use their phones like that do
might squeeze more life out of the phone if you tone the brightness down to the lowest you can without straining your vision? D:

I agree with this. I am having great battery life with Faux's kernel.
I came to the droid after having th iPhone since day 1 of release. I traded my iPhone4 for my G2x and could not be happier. While the Iphone has a bit better screen you will end up in the Iron Fist of Apple. Yes, you can jailbreak and all that fun stuff much like you can with the droid OS. But Apple spends a ton of money trying to stay ahead of the dev teams and one day the may get it right.
If you want full control over what YOUR phone can or cannot do I recommend staying away from the Apple products.

If normal usage for you is that the screen is on for 95% of the time, then to make it through a day, you would need a phone that is capable of 15.2 hours of screen awake time. (Assuming 8 hours if sleep)
I don't know of any smartphone that is or ever will be capable of that.
Your usage is not typical consumer use and I can guarantee you that a company will not invest the money to satisfy your bizarre phone using habits.
You really should consider using a desktop PC if you plan on staring at the screen for that many hours.

question.... are you a heavy user? I don't get anywhere NEAR that long with battery. 6 or 7 hours is standard for me with heavy to obsessive use.
Dude, if you play Angry Birds for 3 hours straight it's going to kill your battery. Getting an iPhone isn't going to change that.
Looks like you use your phone as much as me, OP. There are some basic things you can do to improve battery life to some degree, but you wont get much better than that with the stock battery. I wish battery efficiency was advancing as quickly as phone technology. Lol ... If I use my phone primarily as a phone then it lasts a normal day no problem. But I use ALL of my phones features, and I use them constantly, so I opted to get this:
I can go 2 days of my normal heavy usage with absolutely no worries I'm going to run out of battery power. And its a great conversation starter lol.
G2X CM7

About to purchase

Hey all, I am about to purchase this device for my wife (I have the G2X, a working one miracously) and was wondering if HBO Go and Netflix work on the latest 2.3.4 version. I am leaning towards the Sensation for her because she takes a lot of pics and records videos. It is my understanding that the picture and video quality are amazing. Can this be confirmed. Also, any pitfalls I should be made aware of would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Wait till October and get the Hercules. I'm pretty disappointed overall with this device. Sadly....
Issues.
Reception poor (coming from mytouch4g)
Battery ridiculous poor
But it's not all bad. I mean I'm sure in the future custom roms/kernels will get this device to reach its true potential

Thanks. I felt the same about the G2X, but the devs have really unlocked the potential of that phone. I would imagine the battery is going to be pretty bad with the Hercules as well (G2X isn't awesome). I was under the impression that the software update fixed the reception issue.
@raycaster:
My experience has been the exact opposite of yours. I came to the Sensation from a MT4G and found the battery life and reception to be very similar. In fact, my Sensation's battery lasts longer than the MT4G's. Sorry to hear that your experience hasn't been great.
With regards to Hercules....after an extremely negative experience with the Vibrant, I have trouble trusting Samsung smartphones. Who knows, the Hercules may be the greatest thing since sliced bread when it comes out, but I wouldn't recommend Samsung.
Samsung sucks, my experience with their Craptivate and it's broken GPS, ****ty battery life, Don't get me started on touchwiz and the lag, rfs is the worst file system, I never ran it stock.
I love my Sensation, it's battery is outstanding, I get over a day with medium to heavy usage. I haven't flashed any roms yet because they all have bugs because of the early development. Stock runs great. All I plan to do is flash a deodexed stock Rom so I can then flash some themes until some custom roms are further developed.

Agreed, i think you got a bad device or maybe need to tweak a few setting to get the real potential from ur battery. also try getting your sim swapped. could be why ur having service issues.

Brand new sim and I compare it to myt4g with the same sim in and on the same wifi I consistently get 5 mbps faster with myt4g. I have since read in the kernel threads (I test beta kernels for myt4g and sensation) and it has just been discovered that not one single custom kernel has been efficiently handling both processors and apps such as setcpu are not functioning properly with this device. Long story short went back to stock kernel and battery is better. BTW what amt of screen on was that 20 hrs? I'm guessing nothing like i would have.
I have about 2.5-3 hrs screen on with about 90 min of music and still get 14 hrs out of myt4g of course I have demonspeed_MOD MIUI, on that device. Sensation 6-8 tops. That's why its sad that myt4g out performs this device (right now) I also understand the nature of development. We're still early. I was REALLY frustrated and it was evident in my post. I just expected more from a $500 device. Guess my standards are too high.
I'm not gonna get rid of it though. Too much potential. Sorry for the negativity in my previous post.
If you're not paying full price for it its worth the shot fornthe potential.

Cheap Ankers 1500/1600mAh Extended Battery

Found these batteries on Amazon.
1500mAh - http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0051N1MTY/ref=redir_mdp_mobile
1600mAh - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0052QSTYQ/ref=redir_mdp_mobile
Seem cheap and based on the reviews, they seem to work really well!
See the Sensation 1900mAh - http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/cr/B0053EZJMC/ref=aw_d_cr_electronics
^Check out the reviews there! They seem to be very good for the sensation!
These batteries are dirt cheap, and seem to work well for other devices!
Anyone own one of these?
Can you give your reviews?
Cheers
Sorry links for 1500 and 1600 are mixed up!

I know you'll be wondering where did I dig up this topic
Well... during the last week I've noticed a drop in my battery life with normal daily use (the phone lasts around 14 hours), if I play a bit more with it (check xda, twitter, facebook and send 5-6 emails) my ds barelly makes it for 10 hours...
I've got my DS last May or June and I had it untill a couple of weeks ago running stock (2.3.5 OTA) and I'm on CoreDroid.
What's your review of these batteries?
As I saw they're no longer available and I just ordered a 1800mAh Mugen for 44$.
It's the 1st time that I'll use a 3rd party battery on a smartphone and I'm a bit anxious. Is there anything that I should be worried? Has anyone had experience with mugen batteries? I've read that they are good but I would like to someone's experience from here )
Thanks!

Plus I feel duty-bound to mention that the latest build of CoreDroid is causing some very odd battery drain on some peoples phones. It's not consistent though (some DS users do have it, some don't. Same with DHD and sensastion and mytouch) which is making tracking down the issue take longer than normal.
My use has also gone from 24 hours to 12 because of this.
Please try restoring to an earlier build. You may be one of the people with the drain. Wouldn't want you buying a new battery thinking your current one needs replacing!

Thanks for the extra hint wnp_79, but I'm not running the latest version, I'm on v2.0. The truth is that there have been days that its stock battery lasts longer, e.g. yesterday I took it of the charger at 8am and at 00:30 I was still at 49% (usually I'm at 7-10% by that time). I did not use my DS that much during the day though.
I have already ordered the mugen 1800mAh since I think that my battery has lost its power
Nevertheless do you still suggest that I try an older version of CoreDroid? Or to upgrade to the latest version?
Thanks in advance for your answer!

Just wrapping up testing on a new release so probably best waiting for that. I think 2.0 was unaffected too. Can't be certain when it started as its been random. A RIL issue we think now. Your battery usage sounds ok.

I think my DS OEM battery is dying or something, i got the device second-hand and the battery would last like 5 hours on normal use, 10 if i only use it minimally, the battery would stay @100% for a while then keeps dropping quickly oAo you can actually look at the marker and see it drop right there ono.
plus, it takes about 8 hours to charge, the charge is pretty good from 0-40% then it only charges like 72mAh from 45-90% then the rest is good, then only lasts for 5.
i looked up the anker's battery and looks good n cheap o.o they don't ship to here so i made my uncle buy it and send it via USP, i'll post a review once it arrives (on endymion 3.4 now ouo)
I look forward to the review!

Well using the Hyperion batteries i'm getting about 1-2 days, they took a while to reach their whole potential (about like 4 weeks?) but they're not bad, and i have 1 for backup so all good.
1 day 5 hours 30 minutes of moderate usage and i just hit the 50% mark. :3
Could you compare that to the OEM batterie?
Because I'm also getting one day and 50% by using my phone "normally". Well depending on the Rom i use..
And there are some risk of boom cheap battaries?

[Q] Satisfaction with N5?

I've got a few questions about the N5 if you folks don't mind answering. Any input would be greatly appreciated
How satisfied are you with your N5, both in terms of the body and performance? Easy to operate with one hand?
What is the default DPI? My Moto G is 320, wishing it was better than that.
I've got a Moto G, and I have enough system UI FCs with both the CM and Paranoid ROM that it is quite annoying and I am back on stock, unrooted (since I never can find flashable zips of the stock ROMs). Even like that if I dirty flash the latest RC/M release. How stable are the RC/M releases of CM and Paranoid on the N5? Any kinds of errors or problems of any sort?
How good is the battery life? I don't have a data plan, don't make very many calls (less than one a day on average and then they are normally only a few minutes), and barely use GPS/Bluetooth, so the only battery drain would be using apps and wifi. I'd say I probably use anywhere from 3-5 hours of on screen time on a heavy days use, based on the battery stats I see when I check it on my Moto G from time to time.
If I root the N5, without flashing a custom ROM or recovery, can it still receive OTA Android updates?
Does Google have a good history of supporting it's older devices with OS updates (all nexus, even the old school ones before the Nexus 4, and GPE type devices, for example)? Afterall, I don't want to buy it and find out that a year from now Google won't be upgrading it to the latest OS. I know there are always custom ROMs to accomplish that, but I know sometimes they aren't always as stable when a device doesn't have an official OS upgrade released.

I'm not answering most of your questions because they've all been answered before.
This question though, doesn't make sense. DPI isn't better or worse. Perhaps you don't understand what DPI is so I'll help with that.

Guess I should have been more clear. I meant better as in lower so I can fit more on the screen. 320 dpi on the moto g makes everything bigger than I prefer. I had it at 245 when I was rooted on a custom ROM.
1. extremely satisfied, really. in cant say anything bad about it.
2. there are much better roms than cm or paranoid. stop looking at whats popular, as popular is rarely best.
3. i see 5 hours screen on time every day. but battery life is determined by how youy personally use the phone, how you personally set it up, what apps you use, and very much the quality of data/phone signal that you get.
4. if you root your phone, without changing any files at all, you can receive and apply an ota. but once you change 1 file, you wont be able to flash an ota. but thats ok, you can always flash manually.
5. google has an extraordinary history of supporting its devices. we have even had google engineers help us with nexus devices on xda before
about stability and roms, nexus devices arent like the others. the public source is always available to a nexus, so no modding needed. on older devices, that google has stopped supporting, aosp will still work on them, its only the binaries that dont get pushed out anymore.

in a way, yes, as the binaries will never get updated. but in another way no, as on the gnex, nexus s, and nexus one actually they are just reusing the older binaries with the new os versions.

So what would old binaries prevent?
Also, if I rooted and changed my DPI, would that prevent an OTA update?

new features, code?
yea, changing anything will prevent you from flashing an ota. youll still receive the ota, just wont be able to flash it. again, its extremely easy to flash it manually, you dont have to look for otas. manually, you can even flash the new update even before you get the ota. and you dont need root to flash manually.

Mann you're thinking too much. If you can wait, I'll surely suggest you to look into the next possible nexus codenamed "Shamu" which has entered the rumorland.
Yes, it would. DPI needs to be changed in the build.prop file which is a system file.

If the rumor is true about the screen size of the Nexus 6, that thing is going to be too damn big for my liking.
I like everything about the nexus 5 EXCEPT: LTE problems. Signal stability in LTE is poor. Sometimes with LTE on, I cannot make a phone call or get "data not available" errors. A power down/up fixes the problem (sometimes toggling airplane mode also fixes but not always). Everywhere I get 1 bar of LTE I get 3bars or better with my Blackberry Q10 phone. Where I get 3-4 bars of LTE on the Nexus, download speeds of 33MB/sec while I get 47 MB/Sec with my Blackberry.
And that is my only issue as I like the Nexus 5 in all other aspects.
Neither Google nor TMO could fix this LTE issue (it is a known issue if you check the web but TMO says it is not a known issue). I am waiting for a callback from Google-they will probably send me another (which most likely won't work well either).
I have a stock OS (4.4.4), bootloader unlocked, rooted and have installed Xposed modules (Gravity, Xblast ).

its NOT an issue with the phone, it could very well be an issue with your local network. oh, and you cant compare bars.. first, those bars tell you about phone signal, not data. secondly, every manufacturer use their own codes for the bars. one phones 1 bar could be equal to another phones 3 bars. oh, and xposed causes many undocumented issues. depending what you are using it for, it might very well play a role in your issues.

Yes but the moto g is a different phone with a different PPI. Knowing the DPI of the nexus 5 tells you nothing. But you can still change it.

battery life is all about how you personally use your phone, how you set it up, what apps you use, and the quality of your phone/data connection. if that quality is only so so, then no matter what you do, your battery life will only be so so.

About the battery life...i do an intensive use of the phone.. I use app like greenify and quarantine to disable the app/services that I don't use... I also flash ElementalX kernel to improve performance and battery life..But a 3000mah battery could be awesome... About the camera... Producers like Sony or HTC are soooo far better about camera lens.. And NO, I don't need lesson from you
But I agree that, for 349 euros (dollars) LG can't do more (excepet a bigger battery)

i know its a thing that continues to be told over and over.. kernels wont improve your battery life. its an untruth. if it was true, every single person would be using the same "magic" kernel. i will get the exact same battery life on any kernel. regardless if it has "battery saving" code included or not. if you set up your cpu, on any kernel, the same, you'll get the same battery life. and my battery life is great, i get 5 hours screen on time no matter what. thats more than most lg g2 users get, and thats a 3000mah battery. it doesnt matter if you use apps like greenify or not, if your setup or phone/data signals arent good, youll have lousy battery life.
about the cam.. the camera isnt some expensive camera for professional use, its a mobile phone camera. and its not the top mobile phone camera either. but it is near the top, and takes great photos. if you are a person that actually knows how to use a camera, not just point and click, then the camera should should be quite more than just adequate for you. give me a camera, even the worst, and ill privide you with great photos.
