About to purchase - HTC Sensation

Hey all, I am about to purchase this device for my wife (I have the G2X, a working one miracously) and was wondering if HBO Go and Netflix work on the latest 2.3.4 version. I am leaning towards the Sensation for her because she takes a lot of pics and records videos. It is my understanding that the picture and video quality are amazing. Can this be confirmed. Also, any pitfalls I should be made aware of would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Wait till October and get the Hercules. I'm pretty disappointed overall with this device. Sadly....
Issues.
Reception poor (coming from mytouch4g)
Battery ridiculous poor
But it's not all bad. I mean I'm sure in the future custom roms/kernels will get this device to reach its true potential

Thanks. I felt the same about the G2X, but the devs have really unlocked the potential of that phone. I would imagine the battery is going to be pretty bad with the Hercules as well (G2X isn't awesome). I was under the impression that the software update fixed the reception issue.

@raycaster:
My experience has been the exact opposite of yours. I came to the Sensation from a MT4G and found the battery life and reception to be very similar. In fact, my Sensation's battery lasts longer than the MT4G's. Sorry to hear that your experience hasn't been great.
With regards to Hercules....after an extremely negative experience with the Vibrant, I have trouble trusting Samsung smartphones. Who knows, the Hercules may be the greatest thing since sliced bread when it comes out, but I wouldn't recommend Samsung.

Samsung sucks, my experience with their Craptivate and it's broken GPS, ****ty battery life, Don't get me started on touchwiz and the lag, rfs is the worst file system, I never ran it stock.
I love my Sensation, it's battery is outstanding, I get over a day with medium to heavy usage. I haven't flashed any roms yet because they all have bugs because of the early development. Stock runs great. All I plan to do is flash a deodexed stock Rom so I can then flash some themes until some custom roms are further developed.

Agreed, i think you got a bad device or maybe need to tweak a few setting to get the real potential from ur battery. also try getting your sim swapped. could be why ur having service issues.

Brand new sim and I compare it to myt4g with the same sim in and on the same wifi I consistently get 5 mbps faster with myt4g. I have since read in the kernel threads (I test beta kernels for myt4g and sensation) and it has just been discovered that not one single custom kernel has been efficiently handling both processors and apps such as setcpu are not functioning properly with this device. Long story short went back to stock kernel and battery is better. BTW what amt of screen on was that 20 hrs? I'm guessing nothing like i would have.
I have about 2.5-3 hrs screen on with about 90 min of music and still get 14 hrs out of myt4g of course I have demonspeed_MOD MIUI, on that device. Sensation 6-8 tops. That's why its sad that myt4g out performs this device (right now) I also understand the nature of development. We're still early. I was REALLY frustrated and it was evident in my post. I just expected more from a $500 device. Guess my standards are too high.
I'm not gonna get rid of it though. Too much potential. Sorry for the negativity in my previous post.
If you're not paying full price for it its worth the shot fornthe potential.

Custom ROM / Kernel with the best battery life

With cm7 and the amc chip fix implemented I have achieved 2 days on a single charge. A few MMS, plenty of internet browsing(switching from edge to 3g only when i use the internet), at least 400 text messages, a few calls, and about 2 hours of accumulated music playback.
Brightness was at 50%, and wifi was always on.
cm7 10 characters
I installed CoreDroid 4 w\ Sense and Gingerbread last night... kinda loving it a lot right now. It's revamped UI for MMS without the stupida#$ slideshow is soooooo much better. That slideshow really annoyed the hell out of me!
I just got my Inspire yesterday an ms I'm loving it. Although rooting was not as easy as rooting my Evo or Atrix, I was able to get it rooted.
I'm currently running the Rooted Stock ROM and I'm getting great battery life. I haven't flashed any custom kernels either, just the one that came with the rom. Normally about this time on my evo, the battery is almost dead. But not this Inspire...this phone is a beast! I made a couple of calls, sent numerous text and been checking FB every now and then. All I want the phone to do is last at least the 8 hours that I'm at work. Anything after that would be fantastic.

I have run both Revolutions, CoreDroid, CM7, buzz sense, leeDroid, and Dilli.
Before i say my favorite and why, I want to express that i might not have had the right rom/kernel/radio combo on some of my installs, so this is by no means a dig on ANY of them just my inexperience.
My favoirte by far is leeDroid. It has had the best balance for my phone on Battary, UI, speed, and sound.
On some of the GB roms I had some lag, especially after unlocking. On Dilli i had an extreme battary drain. I did like CoreDroid also. I have yet to try an MIUI rom as i enjoy the leedorid so much. I have never had a rom on my phone for this long.
I am actually suprised i haven't seen more activity on his thread, nor mention of his rom in the forum sticky!
Anyway, Thanks to all the chefs in the kitchen!! I have enjoyed all your roms and will be trying them all again!

"switching from edge to 3g" Do tell! Can this be done on a stock rooted rom or only on cm7? Thx
I was originally using the RCMixHD as well, but then i decided to switch it up to CoreDroid V5.1. I must say that i'm loving the custom ROMs, and must again give a shout out to the awesome teams that put these things together. I don't think i could ever go back to stock, especially now that i have Gingerbread!
That being said, my battery life has been inconsistent at best, and insanely pathetic at other times. I'm still trying to figure out what exactly is the major cause of my woes. I know when i first flash the ROMs, the battery life is amazing, losing maybe 1% an hour over night. But after i configure it, install all the apps and what not, i lose on average of 3-4% an hour, in airplane mode & with NO use at all. When i actually use it, it jumps up by a factor of 3x.
So basically, i still need to find the battery sweet spot by getting rid of the apps/settings that kill my battery. I'm open to suggestions!
Use CURRENT WIDGET (app store) to find and kill the apps that drain your battery!!

Just wanted to show off. How do I take a screen shot if im not rooted. All the apps in the market say you need root.
Use a digital camera...
There's a way with the SDK, but I don't remember how to do it.
Using the sdk is easy. Once you download it, you can have it setup and working in under ten minutes. It's a pain to have to do it this way, but if you don't want to root, it is a viable option.

The sad thing is I ran a speed test on my old iPhone 4 (used by my wife now). First test right off the bat I got 5.2 MB/s down LOL. The "4G" Inspires aren't much faster than the "3G" iPhone 4's due to AT&T's bull****. If I recall correctly the iPhone 4 is HSPA but not HSPA+. The Inspire is theoretically capable of 14.4 MB/s but we're only getting half that if we're lucky. Only when AT&T gets true 4G (LTE) will we start to see the 4G LTE phones start to pull away speed wise. Anyway, 2-4 MB/s is more than enough for most typical smart phone tasks, these days anyway.

I think everybody streatches the truth(carriers), but it is "mobile" technology but ya 2-3 is just about right, but in this same area my bros iphone4 only gets 1-2 so i was just impressed a lil at first, my G2 in this same area got 8 at best but 7 constantly in my house. 5 when im out and about. And just wondering what type of network is this phone really using? What is umts?
Was wondering what sideloader update? I get roughly 6.5mbps here by the Texas motor speedway.
I have a HTC inspire 4g
Using coredroid 6.6
Also wondering what does overclocking do to your phone?
I have no-frills
And also what does the governer do?

And many others would someone please let me know what they are and how to properly use them please.

-Are you wondering what "sideloader update is"? are are you asking what update did I get?
-Overclocking just raises your CPU to speeds that your phone wasnt originally intended to do. It will make your phone a bit snappier and some things will run faster, but you must be very careful not to raise the CPU level too far, you could damage your phone permanently.
-To overclock you must have a custom "kernel" with the ability to "overclock". If you have flashed a custom rom then chances are you have one. Or you can download one and flash it after the rom, BUT, make sure it is compatible with your rom or could get bootloops and have to restore a backup. ALAWAYS MAKE BACKUPS WITH CLOCKWORK! they will save your life!
-The governer, in my understanding, just tells the CPU what speeds and frequencies to use and when to use them, i always just imagine a highway of cars, the cars would be the information, and the highway the paths to where the information goes, the governer just manages all this information in ways to conserve battery life or just speed things up, Smartass is a Schedular that somebody made that manages it all verry well. and kindof revolutionized linux systems.. or is that BFS?
- Just use smartass as your daily governer. Make a profile for SCREEN OFF in setcpu, use powersave or conservative and put the CPU speeds at 245/345 or somethin low like that. and you should be good.
WHat update? the hsupa update??lol that was like a month ago....

Rom or Rom+Kernel with best battery duration known?

So ye, maybe tonight or tomorrow a storm will come and probably will have no electric power, I have 3 batteries but just in case it takes long to get electricity back I wanna know what rom or rom/kernel combination has been proved to be one of the bests battery saver.
I know I might get shot by the search police but I made this new topic cuz roms get updated everytime and old searches can point me out outdated answers, plus I need a quick response since the storm might start tonight, thanks.
There's no definitive BEST. It's all about what you do and how well you manage it. I get pretty great battery life with CM7 and LordMod's kernel. But some people have battery drain issues with cm7 nightlies. It's more about you and your phone. Experiment, try stuff out, see what works best for you.

Im surprised how leedroid and other sense based roms now drain a lot of batteries! maybe cuz of the new sense, I remember leedroid gave me better battery results in the past similar to cm7.

I have done some research into the Android OS draining the majority of the battery and didn't really find anything with the SGS4G, however found the issue in the Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy SL i9003, Galaxy Note GT-N7000, and the Samsung Infuse 4G forums, and I am sure there is probably more..
Out of all those forums this is the only one that seemed like it could have a solution linking it to:
1. Google backup transport
2. Organizer widget

My only problem, I have neither of those on my phone.
I was hoping that maybe somebody here could help me diagnose the issue. For the longest time I just have thought my battery is getting old and isn't holding a charge as long, or I just use my phone too much. However after watching my Battery Usage over the past couple days makes me wonder if there isn't another issue here.
I am currently running RaverX3X's amazing Valhalla BlackEdition Final with the Booster and FBis251's bhundven's SMS KJ6 v0.2.0 Kernel. I also have installed the BraviaHack and am using the KG4 Modem. I am able to post logs or anything that can possible help. I have used thomas.raines 1-Clink Gremlin Remover following each step to the "T" with no luck of fixing the issue.
I have attached more Battery Usage Stats as well in case they might help.

Thanks guys, I have pretty much resolved the issue as I have switched Kernels and am no longer experiencing huge battery loss from anything other then the Display which is just plain normal. I still plan to update over to FBis251's version of ValhallaBlack as I have been keeping an eye on it, and debating when to make the switch.
[On a side note] I'm still not hundred percent sure why the Kernel was giving me this issue to begin with. If I had more experience with Android development debugging I'd love to dig deeper into this issue. However though since it doesn't seem to be a huge issue among other users in the SGS4G forums, and it is easily fixed by using another Kernel I don't really see the need.
Thanks again FBis251, and m0bstr.
Problems with Android OS with Gingerbread and Froyo
I have now encountered battery drainage problems on two different Samsung phones. For a long time my Samsung Captivate ATT running Froyo 2.2 was killing my battery. I was about to buy a new phone. I touched base with Samsung and decided to back up my phone and do the factory wipe.
After the reset and the loss of my apps, the phone seems to be working ok. Even a battery which constantly appeared to be dead, is now working fine and holding a charge.
Today another phone the Samsung Glide ATT running Gingerbread seems to have caught the problem and Android OS is using 25% of the the battery. This is ridiculous.
Normally, about 75% is for display and OS doesn't even show up.
Another person at work had an Android exhibiting similar problems today. This problem seems to be pretty widespread if I know three people with this problem. Feedback appreciated.
Maybe "One Power Guard" can help you downloaded from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889740

Telus SGS4G battery life and ICS

I've tried many of the SGS 4G ROMS after convincing my Telus SGS 4G it was a T-Mobile version. I really like both remICS-UX and UltraGen ports, but battery life is quite disappointing. 3G/4G was not as good on remICS-UX ans UltraGen.
Any Telus phone users out have suggestions on other ROMS to try, or settings to try for our phone (yes I searched the forums, very few Telus folk here).

Flash with hefe kod kernel over your Ultragen rom. You should see a big difference in your battery life. Also turn off wifi and GPS if you r not using it.

The Telus phone is actually the T959P or something and it's reallynot the same phone as they use different bands than Tmobile/Wind does, so I'm surprised the ROM actually works but there could be many things that are draining the battery that are due to the fact that's its not the same phone, and that also would explain why things don't work right in terms in wifi/4g/battery, etc.
Yeah I am totally surprised it worked too. But a few kind Telus users here give easy instructions on how to make it think it is a sgh-t959v. Just hoping they will continue being kind and share there tips and tricks.
Anyway busy thanking and donating to all you kind folks. I'm a happy noob, having fun great fun trying all these custom roms.

Just curious what you did to make it think it's a 959V ?
When you say battery life wasn't as good, can you clarify that? How long were you using it, how long did you have the screen on for, did you change governors to one better suited, can you take a screen shot of your battery window in the settings like this

Whatever app is listed at the top, in my example, Screen, click on that and take a screen shot, This will show how much time that app has used
If you run something like CPUspy, it will show you the different "states" of your cpu, IE, what speed it's running at. If the phone is in standy, it should run mostly in deep sleep state. If something is keeping it from sleeping, that will affect the battery.
I just took my phone off the charger, but you can see it used 1000mhz for the bootup at full speed, then when I shut it off, it went to deep sleep mode. If there is no deep sleep, then something is keeping it "awake" and that is the cause of the battery drain. Sometimes installing app's can do that.

Just realized I should be in Q&A section, bad n00b
BTW, do yourself and dao not take donations? You guys are rockin' the SGS 4G with all the ports and help.

There is more coming... btw.
someone is sending me a verizon fascinate, and there is some common code between sgs4g, verizon fascinate, and T959P.
The bigger part is cg2900 gps driver, different digitizer, and a few other odd ball differences.
I also have an SK4G that I'm trying to port as well.
A lot of these devices share the same drivers, and our phones are just a little bit different then aries.
Fascinate even has some problems in the aries kernel, although I think they have work arounds for most of them.
So, as soon as I become available (not busy with work from 8am to 3am daily...) and get the verizon fascinate from... someone, I'm gonna start looking at t959p as well.

My daily usage is like this: Get on train, use phone to Netflix, read news (Currents, Flipboard, et al), listen to music from Google cloud or Rdio, screen on the entire time (1 hour 15). Don't use phone for 8 hours. Reverse the train ride. Charge phone when I get home for next day use. Rarely have GPS or Wifi enabled. No media on SD card. Only half dozen extra apps (Currents, Flipbord, Google Play Music, Rdio, Google Maps etc).
The stock ROM from Samsung/Telus did a good job of lasting through day and have enough charge to finish the nightly train ride.
Had a chance to play with CPUSpy and try a few things, no deep sleep on remICS-UX or UltraGen and they would not last through the day (unused, screen black) without being charged. I haven't changed the default ROM performance settings or governors (tried to OC but phone got really hot, didn't really notice any difference is application performance, so set it back).
I've just started trying the SlimBean 3.1 ROM seems to be deep sleeping according to CPUSpy. Fingers crossed it behaves closer to stock ROM as far as battery is concerned (deep sleeps when not in use)
Anyway thanks to mcmerrit for the instructions on how to get this odd variant working with the mod community ROMs. Feels like I have a new phone
I've never been able to get more than 10 hours on a charge with 2+ hours of screen time on any ics roms with the stock battery. I do have wifi on pretty much the whole time though.
Erikmm will have another kernel coming out with battery life as good as GB. Stay tuned.
If it helps, hit the thanks button. It's my motivator to be more helpful.
