How often do you flash your phone?
For me, its everytime a new version of the rom i use gets released.
Off topic
Thanks to XDA is that I´m still loving WM!
If not I´m sure I moved to another platform
I have flashed so many times I don´t even remember
I usually flash when I get bored, or the ROM starts slowing down. Or whenever I flash my own ROM, I realize it is awful and go straight to xda for a new one
Been hooked for years But now I'm flashing on Android thanks to xda!
I've lost count as well. But the thing is I find myself instinctively returning to certain roms, even if it is a much earlier rom. It's like they have a personality of their own. ( I hope I don't sound too wierd here ... plus I have a life).
You also become an expert on how fast you can get all your software and themes up and running should the new rom rain on your expectations. It's like a pit stop in F1.
I started flashing about a week ago, and I tried 3 custom ROMs from XDA.
Im gonna try cooking a custom ROM myself soon too, because I have very specific requirements for my ROM
However, I'm NEVER going back to my original 6.1 ROM. 6.5.3 is the way to go, even though I can't use my old manilla themes anymore.
Everything improved by an awful lot.
Also, i think this post is a good moment to say thanks to all the chefs that create custom roms for us!
i only started flashing roms the other day, i was doing one a day but have settled on one that seems to be holding my battery a lot longer than the others i used so im gonna stick with this one (xannytech's EVOLUTION 1.1)!
also love this site and the "USE THE SEARCH" mentality, its awesome.
I don't have a *twitch* problem. I merely *twitch* need my *twitch* fix. I can *twitch* stop anytime, *twitch* do you have some*twitch*thing for me *twitch* to flash? *twitch**twitch*
Well to be honest I'm not sure how many roms I've flashed. I know its hundreds!!
I've 2 devices so I have one for everyday use and one for testing/flashing. As a mod I like to know what I'm talking about so I tend to flash nearly every rom which comes out for my device (HD). I'm flashing daily . However as more and more chefs have appeared this has become more combersome so I try and limit this to 3-6 chefs unless something really catches my eye (new build etc). So I'm only flashing when one of these chefs release a new rom.....which still seems to be daily or every other day...lol . Then I choose my preferred rom and flash it onto my everyday use device

lol, very good.....though I would get that *twitch* sorted out very soon......think I heard another rom was released!!!
for me, it depends on how much time i have, and if the new version of the rom has stuff that i am really interested in. otherwise, i'd just skip the update
There is no way to compehend how many times have flashed... Excalibur tryed all ROMs made joint project ROM every minor tweak a flash, Kaiser same deal yet now lives with stylez black v.5 once you have a ROM on there that is to your preference then flashing another isn't a necesitty, now using Touch Pro flashed the ROMs that take my fancy now back in Kitchen... Flashing aboit 2 x a day as need phone set up.
Spelling whack just had a surge and net not working used to inline spellcheck
So yes i still have the bug but not as bad as used too lol

I think constant flashing soon starts to ware you out. People have other committments as well which can eat up time. I've a family so my time is limited, but when I can I still flash, tweak and play. With time the bug does start to decrease, but only a little bit
I am definitely a flash junkie. Not a week goes by and im flashing another ROM. No other platform so far is this hackable\customisable\tweakable.....you get the point.
i flash mine everytime nrgz28 comes out with a new rom. he makes the best in my opinion. i also try others but i always find myself going back to energy roms!!!
Hi all !
Browsing the Android Development forum I could find those roms :
MoDaCo Custom ROM, Bionix NS and GingerS SMALL
As I understand, all three :
- are based on GRH78
- have su / root
- have an unsecure bootloader to enable adb remount
- have the new market
- have busybox
- have various kernel and system optimisations
So, I would like to know :
* What are the diference between them ? (not which one is the best, which is a very different and troll-making question).
* What are the advantages of each of them ?
* Why are they better than the OTA rom (considering that su / root and the new market are installed) ?
Thank you very much !
I know this isnt going to answer your question, but it really is all preference
modaco ROMs are all about being very close to stock ROMs, but with some nice refinements and extras that you need like super user etc.
i dont know those other 3 unfortunately...
MoDaCo is all about maintaining a stock look and feel with just some of his own "optimization scripts" ran on the system. I believe he also deodexes so you can apply themes. He's big on stability as well.
I've only used Bionix on my friend's T-Mo Vibrant, so not sure about on the NS, but it seems more geared towards tweaking out every last bit of performance, and changes the look and feel. It's been a great ROM on my friend's Vibrant.
I've never heard of the third one you linked until you linked it.
I've not yet felt the need to move from stock on my NS. There's a few tweaks I'd like to see (like battery percentage in the status bar), but unlike previous phones, this one just feels great right out of the box.
I'll probably go for Cyanogen v7 once it's stable. Best of the Best on most devices.
But like slowz3r says, it's really just preference. Try them all if you really feel compelled and see which fits your tastes the best.
edit: but warning, being a ROM flasher can be addicting once you start.

Also being NAND memory, and without TRIM support on Android, you're theoretically hurting that partition's read/write performance each time you flash a ROM. That said, I've flashed the living daylights out of my Nexus One, and it never felt any slower. From what I've read about SSDs on standard PCs, it isn't too horrible.

I had a HTC Hero before my NS, I'm already a flasher addict. It's too late for me
To summerize and help me choose, I did this chart. It is probably incomplete and relies only on the rom description by their author. If they have a feature and did not mention it, it will be absent on this chart. Sorry folks, if you don't advertise it, we can't know it's here...
As soon as Cyanogen Mod 7 is stable, I'll go on it (CM is such an amazing work). Meanwhile, I think MoDaCo will be fine for me.

You should consider CM7 Alpha3 as well. Its very stable and comes with a few extra goodies that the other ROMs don't have.
For example, the notification bar widgets, various tweaks in CM settings, rendering effect etc.

A lot of people are awaiting CM7 Stable.. but honestly, the nightlies are stable and I haven't experienced any problems with them. Torch isn't working, but there are alternatives on the market.
Try it out, just perform a nandroid backup before flashing.. don't like it? Nandroid restore and you're back to where you were before you flashed.

I'll try a preview or rc version, maybe even beta, but I'm just not interested in anything that's still labeled alpha, personally, though not arguing that it's not stable.

Well I have trouble understanding it's completely stable with the "alpha" postfix. Some hardware, some features, I don't know, something must be unstable for it to be marked alpha...

Its labeled alpha because some of the CM specific goodies are not yet included (battery %, UI customizaion, phone/mms lockscreen sliders and other tweaks etc).
But otherwise its stable and everything pertaining to stock GB works fine.
CM7 RC1 cannot be << CM6.1.1 Stable .
I was just looking at the latest MoDaCo r6 and it actually looks interesting to me now. Maybe the flash-a-holic in me is resurfacing. LOL.
Please let me know, how much you want nightly builds for the vega tablet.
be honest - if you got no interested in them, say so - its not taken as offense.
we are probably too small to get included in the official build process, but i would provide semi official nightlies.
always build from latest cm7 sources. no mods, nothing changed, build the same way the official nightiles are build. on a regular basis. usually i am on my pc each day - being able to invoke the build script and auto upload it.
Voted for the regulary option but that is because I'm a flashoholic
At the moment I'm using your april 3rd version and flashed all versions before that. Especially when you can flash without loosing data/apps/widgets I see no reason not to update regulary.
I usually flash each version hoping some bug will be fixed, some performance increase will be seen, etc. But a weekly would be fine for me as well for example. Just very thankful for the work you're doing for the vega and CM7 is already an excellent piece of work on it.
I agree for 100%.
I´m also a flashoholic like dagrim1
Once or twice a week would be very appreciated.
Thanks for your time and work. Even when the Android 2.2 Vega rom runs a little bit smoother and more stable this ROM has so much more potential. And I love it really.

I´m on corvus rom last week and something, but I would be really happy to try anything new...
so, my vote - yes I would flas them to try (for sure) and use them, if they would be better than corvus...

Yes please

One or two nightlys per week would be fab!
Hi my name is Harplo and I'm a flashoholic
what exactly is different to the viewsonic G 10? i mean in terms of hardware? because my theory is, like the dream/sapphire projects if this CM build could be built for "both" if the hardware is 99% same, then there would be a lot more interest.
i guess the first thing would be to check to see if the kernel sources are any different of the two devices. just a long shot that might save time and gather a lot more interest if they are very similar?
i hope to see them regularly, maybe once a week not like every night. i know that its a lot of work that goes behind it as well as time. specially if a person is doing it on their own.
thats more than enough demand. will starting building this once i finished the tablet tweaks... that long, the tablet tweaks builds are nearly the same as nightlies... just added my stuff

That is great. I wrote a message to Apache14 about starting a thread, but i did not get an answer. But i think he gets more then enough pm's from people wanting things.... Anyway it would be very nice when there would be a nightly. Flashed all your builds till now.
Thanks.

Basically... You have to have CWM installed. Then put the zip file on your sd-card and boot into CWM where you choose 'install from zip' and select the zip.
But not having to wipe depends on the update itself, not the method. Often when changing between roms a wipe is necessary, sometimes when updating a rom as well but very often you can update without any problems.
Great news about the nightlies!

Just discovered your nightlies and flashed them!
Looks great!
Thank you!
Sorry this is slightly off-topic, but for those of you who regularly flash nightly's: Do you have a method of easily restoring apps+data+settings other than Titanium? I have found using Titanium restore-all often leads to problems.
It would be great if somehow an app could allow our tablets and phones to automatically update the read-only partitions nightly, but still preserve... everything that is read/write (and then kill dalvik-cache and reboot).
Well... You guys already Know Me... So no need to introduce myself The Version 4 of My Rom Will Be Out Soon.... and Development will be Continued hopefully for all you people...
The Thing is I wanted all the People to enjoy the Pure Feeling of Stock so thats why through everybody's help and so much interest in my AOSP Rom Im Bumping Up my Rom Pure Vanilla to Android 4.2.2 Now... Through the Builds of Shaan..... and Diego's Build 3 i'll start development or Sooner... i know It's the matter of the novathor resources but why not have rom's so that the devs and all users can enjoy...
My Rom Will Be CM Based Now
Coming Soon.... But first i wanted to know what would the people like to See in Those Builds of the New Rom...???
==> A New Name of the Rom??
==> Features Which Should be implemented/Apps??
==> Fast Experience/ Or Gaming Experience?
==> AOKP Based Softkeys Enabled? Dw about screen ooking small i'll decrease the Pixel density a bit
Other things you wana let me know, features apps, etc whatever im open to PM's and This I Wana Make the People Remember About it..... CM10.1 sources not there not to worry.. u want a good exp of CM i'll give it to you....
Plus i Can Teach everyone how to make nandroid's and revert back to 4.1.2 any rom with CWM when somebody wants to go back to their own Rom's..... i do the same way
Awesome
But give it a new name..as it is on 4.2.2
thats what it's written a new name should be decided... i give an open hand to the users.. for the name apps and features implementation!
No, just no. There is no need to base it on CM if CM has so many bugs, better keep it stable and bug-free until CM itself becomes stable and bug-free(or almost).
Please, Please, just make it faster!! I hate when it gets stuck!
Thanks a lot dude, much appreaciated.
Here my reviews ;
1 - A new name : Cyanilla ROM (CM + your experience)
2 - I think you should create different packs for different choices however 4.2.2's apps gonna be good, :good:
3 - No more routine lags,
4 - It is optional, isn't it ? Stock must be disabled,
I struggle to figure out why everyone agrees,,,You do realize that if this ROM becomes based on CM, with the current build even audio isn't working... So I'd strongly suggest waiting for a stable CM.
I'd like it to be as CM based as possible. AOKP Based Softkeys Enabled would be awesome, and maybe balanced between gaming and fast experience ( I stopped playing because it became boring for me, so i'd go for super fast stuff ). The new name is up to you. And please be fast because i'm impatient :victory::laugh:
I have to agree with panda00 on this one. CM is a long way from being a stable build (as i understand). I just don't get why you are doing this thread. It gives users the false hope that CM is upon us and that's not the case. Now users will flood the CM thread asking for an ETA....
Jellygen should be the name and i prefer a fast and stable rom...

It's not developement when you're just putting your "themes" and "mods" in a CM-rom, that is the hard work of some other guys. What they are doing is what you call developement, you are just a modder, copy and pasting stuff around.
Respect their work and stop spamming the dev-thread, everyone should do this.

Okay.. I'd like you to define development? If you want to say making something from scratch that would be production. Development is taking something, and making it better... You can see that he took the samsung firmware, and made it better, proof is that people like it better, and he has received 91 thanks to his thread... Therefore, through my common sense, I'd conclude that what he is doing is being liked by users, so he should continue doing it. I would recommend you to stop whining, and if you don't like something, make something better ... Good day.
I tried asking this before and I'll ask again.
How is the development of CM progressing?
I mean if our device doesn't have CPU sources, how does one plan on tackling them?
I mean if Diego and Shaan are working on it, I am tempted to believe that it is possible to get it to work properly after all right? I mean if not, what's the point of trying something impossible?
So what are they doing about it? Compiling their own sources?

Was attempting to backup everything with TiBu...... (was sooo pumped to flash KitKang, been running Dirty Unicorn 4.3.1 for about a week; loved it, just relatively new to all of this, only had a gs3 since September... so proverbial noob, although not naive...)..... upgraded to TiBu Pro when it said I did not have enough free storage available to batch backup apps/system data... which of course was bogus. Checked the forums and tried to update SuperSU permissions, was redirected to Playstore for some sort of update; next thing I know, this bad boy is briefly rebooted into recovery and now.....alas, I evidently no longer have root permissions............?????....!!!????asdfasf asfgawo asfasgh
I would really appreciate some help; I have already tried to flash SuperSU update or whatever; I have also even tried to (re?)root with Casual (which is what I used the first and only other time I rooted my phone to flash JellyBeans b_19 a few weeks after I got the phone for $0.97 at wally world) and that did not work...
I am completely cool at this point with doing a factory wipe and flashing from scratch, I just don't want to do that yet because I lack the confidence in myself. I feel like I have learned about as much as I could have in the past couple months, and while this site is incredible, there seems to be a lot of cooks in the kitchen telling me 9 ways to skin a cat (to no fault of their own... if anything it's on me for being ill-equip to decipher and filter the signals through the noise...) and I could realllly use a helping hand here.
I'd like to end this saga with first an apology; my rambling is probably adding unneeded information and leaving out more vital details that would better help my future hero, and for that I am sorry and appreciate your patience.... and secondly, I would like to thank everyone who is involved with the development, maintenance, and everything else Android... you fellas are brilliant, and it is not enough to thank you for facilitating me with a hobby/passion, however new and freshly planted this obsession of mine may be; THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure what all you have done.
Proper way to fix in this case is probably to flash your same ROM again , just dirty flash it. If that doesn't work then try to settle a bit and explain in English clearly what you have done so far step by step. Or you can just go into recovery, wipe everything and flash your chosen ROM fresh.
Thanks for answering, Doc, and sorry for the inane illustration of immediately inept, irritatingly irrational, illusion-ed illiteracy I illustrated inside the earlier invoice.... I was flipping out because the last thing I want is a to deal with some bootloop.
It's the little things, evidently; I had thought I was flashing the most recent version of SuperSU: Wrong. Reflashed the newest update, cleared cache/dalvik... and now I am golden. Thank you sir.
While I am typing, would you or anyone have an opinion on the most "solid/functional/reliable/dependable" 4.3(+) ROM available? Like I said, I have been using Dirty Unicorns 4.3.1 and while it was almost excellent, I prefer to be able to utilize xposed or something similar for functions such as LMT, etc... thanks!

The most functional , stable , fully features ROMs for the Verizon S3 are the custom TW ROMs. . Lots of good ones, I have personally used Hyperdrive,, Synergy and Jelly "Beans" They are all great, each with a different mix of features and custom settings. "beans" release 20 is new this week and has the xposed framework.
Thanks! I got flash antsy and while I was looking at liquidsmooth 2.10, I noticed that 2.37 had just been posted no sooner than 3 hours before...to which I declared it fate and have been happily running that ever since. Very seldomly, it procures minor hiccups...but I love it. I have been reading a few things about beans_20 that have made me think I need to wait just a bit for all the kinks/fixes to be registered before diving in. I'd imagine that within a few weeks there will be some sort of 4.4 that can be a DD with enough customizable options to keep me busy...I'm hopefull anyway.
