Hey Nexus peeps...
I just switched to the Nexus 2 4g coming from my trusty old Evo. I have to admit, things seem much different in this forum compared to the Evo. Mainly, the updates, stock roms, kernels and other things. Seems a bit more confusing.
I was a power user on the Evo, flash-a-holic you might say and was savvy enough to basically handle any issues without problem. Coming to the Nexus is presenting considerable challenge for me. I have a couple questions, any guidance or information is GREATLY appreciated while I settle in to my new home...
Current Set up:
Stock Rom (2.3.4 - GRJ06D)
James Bond Kernel for Stock Rom
What I would most like to do is get the recent OTA that keeps popping up. I understand that I cannot just accept it b/c I have CWM as my recovery, but I can't figure out exactly what item I need to DL and flash. I believe its

--The one noted as "GRJ22 from GRJ06D OTA"
So I would update that through CWM?
Also, how does the internal storage work on the Nexus? If I make a Nand Backup on the "SD Card", is that going to be a safe place to keep it? I worry since there's not actually an SD card on this phone.
Finally, any recomendations from users on alternative Roms (aside from stock)? I haven't gotten up the interest to flash any custom rom yet.. I was on Nightlies on my Evo so I'm kind of over CM atm. Plus this pure vanilla is kind of nice but I wouldn't mind checking out some other stuff.
As mentioned, any help/guidance/recommendations are GREATLY appreciated.

Yes I see... Thanks for the advice. I did go ahead and flash as I thought it should be and it worked flawlessly. Had a nandroid just in case.
Anyhow, I was unable to fight the CM urge so 15 minutes later I went ahead with 7.1 RC1... Back to CM I go.
I will do my best to keep this short and also hope it hasn't already been answered for the sanity of the fantastic developers on this site. I know you guys hate repetition.
I've recently gone through a breakup with my now-ex, and we are not on speaking terms because of his inability to maintain sanity in some situations. My problem here is that he enjoyed continuously staying updated with the most recent updates and mods for my Charge. I have no clue how to do any of this modding, and since we are not on speaking terms, I don't know what to do about my laggy, hasn't-been-modded-in-months phone.
Before I ended communication, he spoke of a possible ICS update for my Charge. He told me it was solely open-ended developer stuff, no official update or anything, but that it was surprisingly stable. Even with him not in contact with me at this time, I would still like to see if I could do this 'update' myself. Is it possible for a complete noob like myself to do it? Or should I just leave it alone and find someone entirely more experienced to help me through it? If it's going to brick my phone with the slightest mistake, I'd rather not even try. But, like I said, you guys are the experts.
I would enjoy any kind of assistance, if possible, to install this pseudo-ICS; unless I can wait another however long the official update is for Verizon, un-root back to stock, and have the official ICS.
I guess my basic questions are:
When will the official ICS become available for my Charge through Verizon? I know it's available stock with the Galaxy Nexus (which I want quite badly) already.
Could a complete noob like myself do this with the help of you guys giving me links and step-by-step instructions (if you would be so kind)?

If you're not comfortable with any of this stuff then just go back to stock. There isn't any ICS, and there probably won't be, at least for a long time. best you can do is flash a theme or something.

My vote? Just learn how to mod the phone! It's really not that hard. Here's a post to get you familiar: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/4847-guide-new-users-guide-everything-how-to-root-rom-kernels-radios-cwm/
Don't flash the Froyo or Gingerbread links at the bottom tho, they'd a bit dated. Just check that post out to get familiar with the terms and process. While you're there, download and install ODIN (there's a link in that post).
***Before we move on...do you have Titanium Backup in your app drawer? If not, spend the $7. It's so worth it because you can save the vast majority of your data. It's worth the $7 (you may have it already because the exbf may have bought it/installed it). Get it and Google how to use it--make a full backup of system apps, users apps, and data before doing anything else.**
So, once you've read that post on RootzWiki, have downloaded ODIN, and made a backup with Titanium Backup, come back here and flash THIS file (follow the link in the 2nd paragraph for detailed instructions): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380430
OK. At this point you will be unrooted and have the latest Verizon updates on your phone. You can... choose to quit... or choose to mod more. Keep in mind, if you've figured out how to flash to stock, you know how to flash mods and can continue to mod.
If I were you, I'd check out TweakStock at this point. Flash the version WITHOUT the customized kernel. Probably your best bet. Themes should be coming out for TweakStock soon, so maybe you'll find something you like.
And yeah, regarding Ice Cream Sandwich... Not happening, at least for awhile. Don't worry about it--only the Galaxy Nexus has it right now anyway.
Thank you! This was very helpful. I'm glad you pointed it out; yes, I do have Titanium. He had the paid version, signed in my phone with his Google account, and DL'd it onto my apps.
But here is another problem I have thought of-- I don't know what kind of ROM or Kernal I have...at all. No clue. Like I said, he was the expert. He always tried to show me how to do stuff, but it always went in one ear and out the other. I'm a girl who needs to be shown something from the beginning, by trial and error, and he would simply show me something 'cool' if he came across it and show me how to install it. Haha. Not saying that was ever a bad thing, I'm extremely interested in learning, but we never really had the time, and I don't want to be alone if I screw up.
go to settings> about phone and look at your firmware version. If it's 2.3.x you're on gingerbread. (you should be, if not your bf was a noob)
If you go to Settings and you see TSM Parts you're on Infinity.
If you see poop brown as a main color theme you're stock rooted.
If you go to your lock screen and it says TweakStock in the upper right hand corner you're on TweakStock.
GummyCharged and Humble are hard to distinguish. But chances are if you're not on any of the above, you're running Humble.
For kernel: if you run a program called Voodoo Control and it says status: ext4 active near the bottom, you're running imoseyon's repacked kernel. Anything else, you're either on stock or imnuts' repack.

Well, the name of the ROM you're running is GummyCharged GBE (Gingerbread Edition) 2.0. It's very outdated now. Have you ran the batch backup for everything in Titanium yet?

Megan... I love you...and I am sorry... I'm not sure if you were hoping i'd find your thread.
But heres the info needed incase.
It's the most recent rootzwiki gummycharged, it's outdated, but it's at least bloatfree. Stock leaked kernel from way back, but it was for sure 2.3. I don't play with ancient software.
When I said upadte, Verizon had finally gotten an Official 2.3, over the leaked, which I urged you to update to for stability, even with bloat, since most roms will now be based off the OTA. When I spoke of ICS, I meant on my phone, and I guess it's hard to exactly explain what open source is, roms, and ota's. But given a Dev and the right sources from Sammy and Google, it can run it. This phone just seems to lack the strong community it did with imnuts, like the fascinate.
Enjoy Inifinty. I'll be a better person someday in the long run, but right now, i've got a lot more to work on with myself rather than phones (which is why my ICS is kinda not a big deal to me as).

Charge Insufficient Memory On Device
I rooted a Droid Charge for my boss using the altered beast method, and now no matter what I do. When I try to download from the market, it tells me there is insufficient space on the device. When there is plenty of room on the sd card, and internal. Can someone please help me, I've tried a reset, and clearing the cache, and download history in the market. Any help someone could offer would be much appreciated.
So, I finally flashed a ROM onto my Atrix 2 for the first time the other day.
Synopsis
Long story short the twitter app crashed my phone and threw it into a boot-loop, I did some research, quickly learned the in's-and-out's of flashing ROM's, flashed the stock-ROM for my device, fully updated my device, and became a better man for it...okay, well maybe not that last part!
The nitty-gritty
What happened was I was trying to update my twitter when the app locked up after hitting the 'submit' button. I tried to force-close the program but to no avail. Then I had the bright idea of shutting down my phone. This is where the fun began.
After re-booting my phone, I discovered that it was stuck in a boot-loop. Now, my phone has been rooted for a little over a month. There were no issues that occurred after I rooted my phone up until that point. This is what leaves me to believe that Twitter corrupted some app data.
After this happened I took to the internet and scoured over forums (this one chief among them), articles, videos, and even asked a few fellow-android users here in the real world. Everywhere I looked lead me to this term I had feared up until this point: Flashing.
I understood that flashing a ROM was just like installing a new operating system. I had toyed around with Linux before just a bit and am savvy-ish when it comes to computers. However, I was so terrified of bricking my phone in trying to flash a new ROM onto it (I would have been track-phoning for around a year until my next manufacturer subsidy came out on my account.)
After discovering terms like deodexed, CM7, stock, AP Fastboot, RSD Lite, and hardware-key reset, I felt like I was finally able to attempt the flashing. The first few attempts failed as I didn't realize I didn't have enough battery life to sustain the flashing process.
After charging it up, I flashed the stock ROM onto my phone. The moment it went from the red M puddle screen to the dripping AT&T sphere, then onward to the ROM was a moment of pure joy (not to sound corny.) I felt like I had beat-the-system. A problem that would have forced others to return their phone to the store was a problem that I fixed myself.
Final Thought
I know this is rather cinematic for it being a simple flash job on an android device. But, for me, this was quite exhilarating. I'm not comfortable flashing anything lower than full-release ROM's (beta and alpha ROM's are a bit beyond my scope right now.) But, I do look forward to testing out various full-release ROM's as they become available.

In all technicality all you're doing when flashing a rom (at least now) is installing some tweaked files such as build.prop or some tweaked system files for themes. By no means is it a new OS. But once a main kernel Dec finished up with a CM7 kernel we should be able to flash a custom kernel which is the meat of what really runs your phone. Really the stuff we can do right now only really have to do withtl the UI.
But anyways welcome to the world of android development!

Congrats on flashing your first ROM . Sorry to hear it didn't completely work out for your. Quick question: did you wipe the Dalvik Cache as part of the flashing process?
By the way, most of the ROMs labeled "beta" are pretty stable. If a ROM has had more than a few updates and it's still in beta, it's mostly because the developer is either planning on adding more features for the full release or is a perfectionist

^Total opinion about stock and custom... I'm on stock/odex/modded/tweaked with some bells and whistles... nice, responsive, and stable..

I agree. Spent this weekend working on the Stock 2.3.6 rooted/odexed. Added the Superv6, and other mods, hotspot wifi fix, removed bloat. Definitely more fun this way. Then again I had a buttload of practice on my original ATRIX.
And thank god for the bootstrap and FXZ !!!!

How exactly do I identify bloatware? I have two programs to do that Titanium backup and Rom Manager as well as a few 3p uninstallers. However, I never know exactly what to delete?

DON'T ever delete any programs. It is better to use something like bloat freezer, and freeze these apps, than to delete them.
The updates check for missing "bloatware" and will fail to install the updates due to ANY missing apps, that came with the stock image.
If you want a debloated image, then use one of the more custom ROMS like lithium, or Supercharged, etc.
If you use a debloated ROM, then you can always flash the fxz back before any updates come out, we tend to start screaming pretty load on here when updates start to arrive as you may have already seen this week with the ICS leaks.
P.S. It is VERY hard to hardbrick this phone, it took me killing the signature on the kernel to get my first hardbrick, and I have had 3 more hardbricks. I have the warranty through att, so I never worry about things like that, since I am a dev and take my phones life into my own hands, and ATT always has exchanged my phone on the spot for over 12 years now.... You can softbrick (bootloop), but that is an easy fix with the FXZ (lifesaver). So not too much to worry about hurting your phone with flashing...

I though the same thing, and I was kind of glad it did crash though, so that I could find that article with the interview of cyanogen that was posted on the XDA-dev home page.
AscottW, I am like you -I read and researched and forum'd my evening/early morning hours away with regards to the whole rooting and flashing and so on. I have never done such things with a phone before, but being fairly computer savvy myself felt like after several hard weeks learning as much as I could, flashed MY first ROM. (Did a little happy dance myself when I saw the custom boot animation for the first time, think I even let out a little school boy squeal as well! -Glad no one was around to hear that)
Still reading and researching and forum'ing at every free moment I have (girlfriend and kids think my laptop has become permanently attached to my, well... lap!) and am really interested in possibly getting myself to a point where I can be of some usefulness in the dev world.
Admittedly, after flashing for the first time, I got foolish with CWM and did basically what seemed like deleting the system partition and told the Android OS to get lost. Big mistake. Got stuck in a crazy splash screen loop and wouldn't load Android OS for the life of me. That said, with the help of the good people here on this forum, I was able to be walked through a AP Fastboot FXZ file fix, updated back to 2.3.6, and started over -making damn sure I knew what I was doing before doing ANYTHING! lol

Something I've noticed is that I slowly become frustrated with whatever rom I'm on, be it cyanogenmod or liquidsmooth, cleanrom, etc. But as soon as I flash back to stock, I remember all the things I didn't like with stock, and want to flash back.
Where is the sweet spot? I find myself jumping back and forth, getting frustrated and tired no matter what rom I'm on. It could just be a personal problem :silly:
But I'm still kinda hoping for answers. For all the people out there who aren't modders, or devs, or who just barely know what they're doing: how do you survive with all the choices, where there's so many unique options of so many devs hard work (each with their own frustrations)? How do you choose?

Just a heads up, this thread is going to get shut down quickly, so I'm just going to lead you in the direction I think you want to go. There is no "sweet spot".
AOSP is made for many phones, and because of that fact you're going to miss a lot of features you're going to get from touchwiz that makes the s3 unique. It's fast, smooth, and debloated. Nice experience, but not for everybody.
Touchwiz has a range of different kinds of roms. You have heavily modded ones and some that are as bare as possible. These run drastically different on people's devices, and because of this fact you're going to get people swearing that their rom of choice is the best. However, just because a rom runs perfectly on someone's device, you might not have the same experience.
You choose by looking at the features you want and comparing them to the roms. If you want a heavily modded interface then roms like hyperdrive, goodness or jellybeans would be a good choice. If you want a more bare bones rom then bonestock, CleanROM, or tkrom would be solid choices. If you want a completely debloated experience, then aosp would be your option.
Basically, there is no real answer to your question. Flash one rom, give it a few days, if you don't like it then flash another.

One of the things that frustrates me is that I can't solve these issues on my own. I'm trying to learn linux and a lot of basic things like that, but it doesn't come naturally. If I could just know how to fix things, then I'd be happy.
I just learned about flashing radios not a few months ago. Before that I was having a ton of issues getting google voice search and my camera to work, and I didn't know why.
So many people write guides and such, but they never give the deeper explanations. Just the quick, easy answers. Take the one-click root for D2VZW. Does it work amazingly? Yes, I used it earlier today, and it was flawless. But I want to learn more in a way that's doesn't require 200% commitment and prior knowledge of things like how to use the linux terminal.
I don't like being a noob, but it's impossible to learn this stuff on your own unless you dedicate yourself, body and soul...

It's all part of the learning experience. You can't expect someone to give you answers all the time. I learned so much from not being happy with some aspect of my phone, searching for answers, and applying fixes for my problems.
You can learn anything without dedicating time, you learn as you go along. I was brand new to all of this a year ago, and now I'm able to fix nearly anything that happens to my phone.

This is exactly why I haven't flashed a single rom/kernel on my phone since I had it (run debloated stock with a few mods). I need my phone functional 100 percent. I was a flash-a-holic with my OG Samsung Epic, and learned from this that you can't have both variety and function. Do I miss the experience? Sure, but right now I can't afford to have a phone that isn't functioning the way I need it to be. Speajing of two phones: just upgraded to GNote 3, so may finally got to mess around with the S3 once the Note is activated.

The video is probably older than the university...it just opened about 3 months ago.
i'll be honest...I love cyanogenmod and would (almost) die for it...I have found my happy rom to be (Carbon) and while i have no issues with it, i live in a bad signal area...long story short, we don't have Verizon Coverage (Altell) atm...There was a lawyer issue that created a problem back in the seventies and that was just lifted about a year ago...Verizon's towers are being put up everywhere and i can't wait till they are activated...That being said i get data drops in the town i live in and sometimes have better experience on Touchwiz...But i cannot stand being on 4.1.2 and to be honest even though i might have data on touchwiz i can't really get it to work...so...
My experience is that when cyanogenmod in its current state is more honest about connectivity....because where cyanogenmod has none touchwiz has a connection that can't do anything.... If we had touchwiz with the latest android version i would probably be fine with an aosp theme....but not really... xD

Hey fellows, I just bought a s5 and can return it within two days for a full refund. Cost me 140 plus tax, used in great condition no scratches at all on the screen, and got a nice case with it. Was going to order an LG G3 since I'd been doing a bunch of research on it, but came around this and figured I'd give it a whirl. I did a little research on xda while in the store before buying it.
Now that I've been home and reading and reading and reading, I've got it rooted using the lollipop root thread which requires you to use odin. No biggie there but the LP safestrap wouldn't install. And after root I can't install apps from the play store anymore. Error 494 or something like that sorry I'm not more specific.
Right now it has the latest and greatest OTA B1B? I can't remember all four off hand. Some thread I've read have suggested that it is possible to install safestrap and then install rom's but I'm unclear if I have to downgrade though odin flash a different kernel or what. I'm kinda afraid to do too much too it without making a backup because I'd need to get it back to stock before I return it if I do.
I guess my questions are, will I be able to install alliance rom? I don't believe so since it's on a different base. Will I be able to do anything to it other than root? It's not a bad device by all means, but If development is dying, and it's locked down so tight I couldn't squeeze a hair in there, I see no reason to keep it. Again, i've been cramming all evening on all threads, and some say it's possible to get safestrap for lp on there with root, to install TW roms. I know I'll never be able to get AOSP stuff on there regardless.
I could probably get by with just root and debloating. But The alliance rom has some nice themeing options that I'd like.
If you guys were me and please be honest, would you keep it and try to get it to work, or just return it for a refund? I had an s3 but never took any OTA's so I could install roms until my eyes turned blue even though development was slowing on it when mine broke down..
Also do you guys have any idea why the play store isn't working anymore? I'm tempted to factory reset now probably losing root in the process, just to try to get my play store working again.
Any and all thoughts will be appreciated. Again I've studied almost all the faq type all in one general help threads and I've never dealt with safe strap before but at this point I can't even install that. The apk installs but clicking install with root access does nothing.

Well Looks like I've got safestrap installed with the bok3 kernel although the device came with the BPB1 kernel / firmware. So does this mean that I can only install roms now that are lollipop with bok3 as their kernel? And would you still return the device to order a G3 which has better specs and more ongoing development?
Depends. Download "eMMC Brickbug Check" from the play store and post a screenshot of it.
Honestly, having played a lot with various ROMS on this phones, I can say that my fav is the current stock MM. Fast, great performance and battery life, and hopefully, we will get root eventually. In the mean time, Iam not really missing it.

Thanks for the input the emmc check said the brick bug wasn't present. I've got to have root so mm is not an option. I need root for things like tibu and to set enforce =0 for selinux to use my old game pad which isn't 100% necessary but nice when I want to use it. This stock rom seems to drink battery life. Do you think I could install alliance or another debloaTed rom?

B1B is not a build, so you should check that. All lollipop builds can be rooted, and in certain situations marshmallow can be downgraded. Especially if you can unlock the bootloader. You should really check the development thread before you just give up on the device.
Please I don't wish to start a war, just a informative Pro and Con.

I prefer AOSP for just this reason and this was why I was leary about getting this device, the locked bootloader. I've read a little about a lot of rom's available, Although Alliance is highly customizable in the looks dept, and I used the extreme Debloat scropt/zip when flashing all those options are a bit much and it can take time to get the look just right especially with the Black glass mod/zip which I remember from Alliance for the S3, on the old S3 I only ran TW occasionally, mailnly running SLIM, then Nameless, then AICP at the very end. because I'm a sucker for the T-mo theme engine. Aesthetics are very important to me.
One question is with the note roms's and S6/7 ported roms why do I need S-pen when I don't have a note? Why do I need the edge stuff built in when the device isn't an edge? What can that do? I know I have a lot more reading to do but I just want to get a general concensus on what people are running and why, if you are only on TW roms? I haven't seen any themes available in the theme section and I can't stand all the white in settings and such on a stock rom. Nor can I stand the Sammy/VZW bloat. I'm looking at Phoenix which is based on a phone rom with edge support? Am I missing something here? And with the note rom's why would I need the S-pen which I may not have to install if it's aroma based or just freeze/delete it after installation. I have xposed installed because I prefer the net stats app to any other net stat's app out there. I know Wanam is available and gravity for stock roms. We had Bur based roms, CM7 (with most all stock features added eventually), and WizardOO's awesome MIUI builds. And WIz's awesome preboot menu that let one choose a governor and overclock and such without the need for an app. That was an awesome tool back in the day. I'll never forget Wizard00's work on that nor the work done by the main CM7 dev, and those two did help one another figure things out like getting HDMI working.
Anyway, sorry for the rants, and so many questions, I know it'll be impossible to answer all, but I'll edit the Title and Tags to hopefully help other users in the future.

I agree with Nandr0idC0nsumer. You didn't specify what the eMMC Brickbug check read. I'm showing the first 2 numbers needed but if you've read majority of these forums, you'd know what it means...lol
it'd mean I'd hit the jack pot but I figured that'd be mighty sliim.. LOL... But I'm going to give it another whirl. I haven't read everything, but most of the faq's and all-in-one threads. I figured that would be few and far between, I hope I can magically transform my phone into a dev model.... I'm assuming that'd be as good as having my old S3 without taking that bad OTA... OMG.. @griz.droidx Flash stock PB1, then root it, then unlock the bootloader! You have, by chance and luck alone, bought an S5 with the ability to unlock it
Yes you can flash Cyanogenmod. Yes you can flash MM and root it. Basically do whatever you feel like
Question is stock PB1 a stock MM build? I'll do some reading to find out, but I have a nandroid of my BPB8 lollipop rom that's already rooted From reading the unlocking thread, and maybe I missed something I just install the APK and bam I'm unlocked. I'm guessing that once I'm unlocked, and rooted, I need to find myself a TWRP for the device. I thought I could just un-install safe strap from Alliance, Unlock and then flash a recovery.
I figured I was lucky in getting one that can be unlocked or made into a dev edition. I'm never that lucky. But on the unlucky, it appears that I have to now flash roms from the unified thread. And from what I've been able to pick up in an hour or so last night and a little at work today, I'd be best to flash only rom's for Verizon specifically. I don't know exactly to to make the others work with a Verizon MVNO but I'm certain that the VZW one's will because on the S3 I could flash any VZW rom and my MVNO (Selectel) worked. I'm hoping to find a build of AICP since that's what I was using with my S3 before it bit the dust. But flashing fever usually hits and I'm sure I'll try others.
Still doesn't look like there's much development going on for the unlocked builds. But at least I can cruise around on AOSP if I want. But the Extreme Debloat of alliance has been doing pretty good already even without my usually tweaking using autostarts and AFWALL, I do miss the privacy manager most of all from AOSP. I just think that is easier to use than the AP OPS version that's included in Alliance.
Is your phone unlocked? if so What rom are you running, and which ones have you ttied?
Lastly, I want to thank everyone for all their assistance in this thread so far. And for those of you who aren't unlocked, I'd still be interested in knowing which TW rom's you're using and stuff like that. I like aesthetics, and don't like the stock TW look of white everywhere, and I've read that with OLED or OMLED or whatever theyre called, the more black there is the easier it is on the battery. Probably doesn't make a huge difference but every little bit helps.

The question is unless they're for vzw on particular will they work with my my mvno. I hope so. . But I don't think they will without. Changing apns. Or may not have the proper frequencies enabled for vzw

Flash PB1 from SamMobile (PB1 is stock 5.0 Lollipop rom) and then root, unlock, and flash TWRP.
To simplify, tell me the ROM you want to flash and I'll tell you if it's compatible if you'd like.
EDIT: Yes roms have to be Verizon-compatible. And no changing apns will not help
Thanks for offering to check. . I've found that aicp. Resurrection remix. CM and Phoenix have versions for vzw. . Thanks for offering to check for me. . Thanks for simplifying the unlock and add aosp roms instructions. . I've read and re-read them. . A couple things I'm worried about ate what hardware features may no longer work like the fingerprint reader at least in the one kernel I found. Even unlocked and thrilled as I am I want to make sure as much of it works as possible with aosp. And I don't want to take a performance hit but doubt that'll happen. . Im still wondering which tw roms people prefer. . Alliance with extreme debloat has did better than I expected. .

You'll have to make your best judgement. Users install the ROM's and use them as a DD to suit their likings and what they like for a ROM. You'll just have to read the OP of the said ROM and see for yourself....Good luck and HAPPY ROM'n
Hey fellows I am tickled pink that I accidentally ended up with a dev edition. Even though there's not a whole lot of AOSP out there for the VZW version of the s5, I do like me some AOSP. Always have the AOSP ROM bug hit me back with my DX. Having said all that, I was pretty satisfied with the Alliance Rom, and I'd imagine other TW roms have much to offer. I chose Alliance because I'd ran it on the S3 a few times especially when I needed to compare TW to AOSP. I did not upgrade using the method above but I appreciate all the replies from "Nandr0idC0nsumer" very much. I once thought about installing a MM pre rooted firmware first actually. If I could find just the modem and anything else like that which may help the performance and usability of my MM CM based RR rom, I might consider it. And it shouldn't be as difficult now with the unlocked BL. Although safestrap worked nicely for what it's meant to do.
After reading here and elsewhere about unlocking and installing AOSP, I decided to just run the apk which is option one in the how to unlock post, ran the app it installs, checked in recovery to see that it said developer, then using flashify I installed a TWRP image that I downloaded from somewhere. I think TWRP was just for klte though and not kltevzw specifically, but don't quote me on that. Lastly, I booted straight into twrp using the hardware buttons on a reboot to install the AOSP based rom and GAPPS. Easy Peasy. I'm looking for a kernel now, but since I feel that the fingerprint scanner works much better for me in AOSP, I don't want to get a kernel and mess that up even though I could always back it up first. or just re-install the rom.
Hopefully someone will come across this thread and find it useful. If anyone feels like it I'd still like to hear about those different TW roms, and why we'd want to use one for the note? or need one with the S-pen app? Can the S5 work as well as the note for writing on the screen using the S-Pen stuff?
