[REQUEST] Can we use 3g usb internet dongle with OTG cable to get internet on N5 ? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have found link for nexus 7 and a google app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.draisberghof.pppwidget
Youtube link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbGrSIdar-c
I tried that on my nexus 5 ( stock rom 4.4.2 rooted) but just after connecting the USB dongle with OTG cable, I got FC.
StickMount is also installed in my N5
Can somebody help me on this issue ?
Is there any alternative way for nexus 5 ?
Thank you

Bump

I think its a matter of having the correct drivers implemented into the kernel in order for your phone to make sense of a 3g dongle stick. And since this is not really needed by most people so no one bothered with it.

Any ideea of a custom rom that supports it ? Anyone ?

You do realize that Nexus 7 has different hardware, right? It's because of lack of driver support AFAIK. Nexus 7's can use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.draisberghof.pppwidget along with some kernel mods to use dongles which we can't!

Because it makes sense to support it on a tablet with no sim card slot.. Why would devs waste time developing support for an external sim card slot if it has a built in sin card slot?

It might not be in Priority for Developers with a phone with SIM card and 3g internet pack activated.
For example I used a postpaid sim for calling and use pre-paid sim for net ( having different cost for internet pack)
So, I like to use that pre-paid sim with a usb dongle for my nexus 5 for updating large apps and similar things, and this feature
with a special kernel / driver will be very helpful for me.
I guess there are other people also with similar situation...
If it is not very hard task for porting the driver for N5, I like to get that feature for N5 or Other latest android phones...
Thank you

Sorry. Bad news, no one will bother doing it for two people

Its really bad that no devs are interested in doing that ( atleast you)
I don't know about other devs.
Hopefully everybody do not think similar and there is always hope for it.

I'm not a dev.
A dev won't waste time developing things (which aren't necessarily easy to do) for 2 people only. Maybe if there were 100 people who wanted to use it, someone may consider it, but since the N5 has a SIM card slot, what you want is very, very unique and no ones priority.
Of course, this is XDA so maybe you could learn from people with a Nexus 7 or whatever how to develop he function yourself.

Do it yourself then, if it's something you need so much.
What @rootSU said is the truth. If it's something that only 2 people need, a developer won't really bother going through what may end up being a difficult task just to do it for them, unless of course he/she needs it for themselves, which again is really unlikely as the Nexus 5 is a phone with a SIM slot, not a tablet.

No one knows if it is worth it yet, we know absolutely nothing about the device yet despite what everyone thinks.
For N4 users we should at least be gaining LTE. Otherwise, not sure what else we will be gaining until the device gets announced.
Depending on what network your One is on, if you want the latest updates you can always flash a GP edition Rom and then run stock Android.
Hopefully we will find out the N5 details soon.

yea i suppose, i heard it was coming out but now that theres so much leaked info on specs its making me think twice about selling my one.
also another big problem htc one has is that the custom aosp roms r kinda laggy in general unless u use the GE or sense roms. but then u wouldnt be able to get features like halo
i sold mine 2 days ago, tired of the crappy battery, camera and build quality , no nfc for google wallet , im ready for the nexus 5

Whoa guys, a little hostile today, are we? Just because you hate LG's interface, doesn't mean everyone does or even should. I, myself, don't like it either but OP came here asking an honest question about modifying his Nexus 5. We could at least have the decency to tell him what we know, or not respond at all.
Anyway, OP. I personally do not know of any way to flash the G2's ROM to the Nexus 5, or any custom ROMs that were inspired by the G2. Your best bet is to try to download something from the Play Store that mimics what you like on the G2. Just doing a quick search, I found this app. I haven't tested it or anything so I'm not sure how well it works, it's just one of results that came up from searching the Play Store. Seems legit, but like I said, I can't vouch for it.

these are just some of the kernels that have the "knock knock" and sweep to wake or sleep or whatever. They will benefit you potentially in more ways than just that specific added functionality.

Except almost every response was worded in a very condescending way. Plus, just saying "Nope can't be done" then the issue getting dropped very rarely happens on XDA. Look at the G2 battery in the Nexus 5, people still haven't given up on it despite a bunch of reasons why it "won't" work One guy said he'd basically hard-mod his phone, taking stuff out, to make it fit. You get that innovation everywhere else on XDA. For some reason this only happens when a feature from another phone is requested to be ported to, or run on, a Nexus device. Since the Nexus (and Android in general) is all about choice I figure hey, throw the guy a bone and elaborate and help him a bit by throwing up alternatives or workarounds instead of providing a brick wall and then moving on with my XDA browsing.
Guess all I'm trying to say is just because some guy might not fully appreciate the Nexus 5 and/or vanilla Android and wants a feature from another phone, one's response shouldn't change from the response one would have given if it were a question about a cool ROM they used on another phone or whatever else (but it commonly does).

Well it depends on if you are a picky person that just picks apart every flaw in a device. I, for one, love the Nexus 5 and dont see any issues with it. Others will say the screen sucks or the battery isnt that great or the speaker is too low or the power button rattles (yes, thats a things here). It depends on the type of person you are. Maybe even what phone you are coming from, because chances are you will be comparing the two.

Looking at getting an N5
What's up N5 forum?
I'm wanting to get a new phone and I'm looking at a couple different devices. The N5 is on the top of my list though. I think for the price and the device you're getting, I just can't go wrong.
I've been reading through the N5 threads to get familiar with the device. Looks really nice, has some great hardware specs and has a lot of development, overall seems like a great device.
So how's everyone liking the device so far?
The only things that really concern me about the device is that it doesn't have a external sd card slot and doesn't have a removable battery. Anyone having issues with this?
Is the 16gb version enough or should I just go for the 32gb. I'm leaning towards the 32gb for the extra storage.
Anyone done a tear down on the device and know if the internal SD card is accessible and can be replaced with a larger SD card? I did this with my HTC HD7 and swapped the original internal 16gb SD card for a 32gb card.
I'm on metro pcs service, so is there any perks to either the Google play edition or the T-Mobile?
Either way I plan on unlocking the bootloader, rooting and flashing a custom rom.
Any feedback is appreciated

Well my concern was if the battery goes out there's no way to replace it... right? So the device is rendered useless and then your left with buying a new device. It's not like this is a deal breaker for me, I was just wondering if anyone has had any problems. I know it's a relatively new device and no one should have any problems with the battery yet.

Thanks for the tear-down links.... They were very informative. I feel better knowing that the battery is pretty easily replaceable if needed.
The N5 has an integrated memory so there is not actual SD card in the device, but either way the 16gb or 32gb will be plenty of storage.

Migrating to Nexus 5?

Hey, I have a couple of quick questions. About 4 months ago I came over to Android from several years on iOS (all Jailbroken & heavily modded devices). I was up for contract renewal with AT&T, and I am still grandfathered in on the old Unlimited Data plan. At the time all I knew about Android, is that I liked how much better it had gotten with Jellybean and that I thought I wanted to give Android a try. At the time I was under the impression that Android was much more open & customizable, and easier to work with. AT&T changed that experience for me. I ended up going with a red Samsung Galaxy S4 because I like the hardware, thinking that if I didn't like the Samsung interface, I could just flash Vanilla Android from Google.......as everybody knows now, not the case. I really like Android and prefer the Vanilla experience to Samsung's Touchwiz interface. their Knox security (and Knox 2.0 coming soon), and the fact that it is not optional has left a very bad taste in my mouth, in addition to the locked bootloader on the GS4. I have also been playing around with Android Studio and am looking at getting into some Android development. So for me, it's time to jump ship and move to the much more user-friendly (mod friendly) Nexus 5.
So for anybody who has come over to the Nexus 5 from another phone, what issues did you run into switching over?
From what I've read, both use a micro sim, so I should be able to just put my sim in the Nexus 5 and go, right?
I currently have root on the GS4 and backup all my stuff to Google drive with Titanium Backup. Theoretically, I should be able to install Titanium backup on the Nexus and restore my apps & app data, correct?
Anything else I should be aware of? I need to make as smooth of a transition as possible. GS4 is then getting restored to factory and is getting sold to pay for a good chunk of the Nexus 5.
I also plan to go with the 32 GB Nexus 5 since there is no SD card slot. Advice on this decision? Thanks for any information and suggestions. I look forward to soon becoming a Nexus 5 owner and member of this forum community.

However when in TWRP it allows me to mount "USB OTG" to do what i bought the drive for witch is Backups.
Edit: tested above USB flash drive with "StickMount Pro" and works great.

I came from the ATT I337 S4 myself and yes get the 32gb cause the Nexus don't support an external SdCard .when you just pop in your micro Sim i also recommend calling to match your Sim and IMEI .i have had zero issues and this phone is smooth as silk.below is a link to a little treat

That looks cool. Nexus 5 came in this last Friday, and my Spigen SlimArmor case & Nilkin Tempered glass protector came Monday. Over the weekend I was able to get the bootloader unlocked and got the phone rooted. So much easier on the Nexus. Can't get much easier than:
"adb bootloader unlock"
I got my S4 back to stock and getting ready to list it on Swappa.
I had one other question regarding the IMEI. You mention calling AT&T to update the IMEI, but I've done some reading and it's my understanding that once you make some calls from the new device after moving your SIM over to it, the IMEI is automatically updated in AT&T's system within 48 hrs. Can anyone here confirm this? Anything else I need to do? Everything is working great on the Nexus 5.
Thanks. I already love this phone!

Can not confirm the auto IMEI switch for you but if there is truth to what you mention than i would call to have it switched sooner than the 48 hour auto period .
Bad ass phone isn't it?

You don't have to switch anything over. I have a note 2 and nexus 5 and switch the Sim out all the time to use either phone. I never called for anything.

Yeah I would really like to know myself. Since I've seen a bunch of websites with the same article/comments/everything on them, I smell a rat. But I fail to see why someone would be such a jackass. Here's an example of such a site:

Does anyone know what these guys are up to, beyond making money with the files they want you to download via surveys?

I changed my mind. BlackBerrys are locked down to only run a BlackBerry OS. Flashing something else would brick it. Besides, there's no files for it and the Z10 has the wrong drivers.
