Oh, and I just noticed you're on Rogers. I think they don't disable tethering/hotspot anyway.
On Rogers you can tether by wifi, usb, or even BT... It's your cellular data and you can use it with whichever device you wish. We had a bad storm here several months ago and my internet was down for a couple of days so I just popped on the wifi hotspot on my phone (SGS at the time) and it was fine (well slow because it was just HSPA+). I've since upgraded to the SGSII LTE, and got my daughter an Experia Arc and they both tether or supply a hotspot just fine.

I guess in the states they like to block tethering due to the unlimited data plans. In Canada we don't have unlimited plans so the carriers couldn't care less if we tether.

On T-Mobile in the US you can, but AT&T is run by greedy dicks so you have to work around it
I have the 2GB lte plan but I cant tether with rogers without paying.....

Are you certain??? I am on an LTE plan with Rogers too and I tethered my laptop this morning (since I was lucky enough to get somebody else to drive today)... I was able to log into work and answer all the most urgent e-mails and cancel the meetings that I don't feel like having on the first day back after our break before ever getting to my desk.
ATT mobile share plans became available today. THey are awesome for people who use smartphones. They feature unlimited talk and text including landlines domestically. Price is based on the amount of data you want to share between your devices. Also the best feature is they all allow tethering or hotspot service! THese plans are nice check them out:

yep! I've been itching for today to come. I just switched my wife over and we'll be saving around $25/month.
Just switched over. Will save a few bucks plus meaning I'm no longer a tethering outlaw.
Particularly sweet if you want to add a tablet. A tablet is only an additional $10/month.
I did it for the unlimited talk, Even with rollover sometimes not enough, I dont own a home phone so our cells are our life lines!

If you don't need unlimited talk, they end up being more expensive
And I am still holding on to my "unlimited" data plan.

I think they are intended for families with multiple smartphones who have already tried to combine things like texting. They probably don't make sense if it's just you and a spouse who are not using that much call time and data.
For me, it shaved about $10 off our bill, more if you count the added tethering (which I was pirating but my wife did not have since I never jailbroke her iphone).
I'm giving up two unlimited data plans, but my wife uses 500MB a month at most, so this really bumps me from 5GB "unlimited" to 6GB. Since I've never gone over 5 anyway, it's a wash.

I use a good amount of data (~4GB/month myself), but they don't really make sense if you don't use a lot of minutes.
Does anybody know how this works with a corporate discount. I'm still on the $25 2gb indoviaul plan because that's the only one that gets a corporate discount.

Hmm good question, I do know anything corporate related such as email etc after switching to mobile share will cost an additional $15 a month.

I have 5 phones on my plan - 2 with data (one old unlimited plan, one 3GB plan), 3 without - 700 minutes w/free mobile to mobile (who really talks on their phones anway...ha!), unlimited text and no tethering. It cost $38 per phone right now. If I were to move to a similar setup with Shared data I'd be paying $50 per phone. It would be nice to not be a "tethering outlaw" but not for that price. If the "feature" phones didn't cost so much to add, especially if they are not using data, then it would be worth it for me. To those who it benefits - enjoy!

I'll have to find the link, but ATT said that FAN discount was applied to the data dollar amount (not the individual smart phone amounts (e.g. $35, $40))

Yeah, I think its really for families with multiple smartphones. In particular, seems to really benefit you if data use by some family members is higher than others; and if you do a lot of texting and calls. Adding a tablet, if you already have a smartphone plans also looks to be a great deal.

I thought so too. My bill always says "XX% discount on service applied" or something like that. Wasn't aware some plans were excluded, if that is the case.
I'm glad that this new plan saves some people money. Would have ended up costing my family more,as we are heavy data users.
I use a lot of data also fortunately all the places I go or am at 90% of the day have WiFi, don't see streaming music or watching movies on my phone all day on anything but WiFi anyway. I look at the data limit as a supplement to the WiFi when I'm not in a WiFi area, to solely use mobile data would cost me a fortune.

It's a sad thing though, if you have grandfathered unlimited and want to switch to mobile share, you'll loose it. Being that t-mo is bringing their unlimited data back, I'd say att should resurface soon with it.
Besides it's a catch 22, it's good to keep your grandfathered plan, but if it works better for family users I say it's somewhat honest of a deal

So, we've been using Verizon DSL the last 6 years, and as of late it's speed has dropped considerably to the point of being reminded of what dialup is...with that said, can I take my current plan (unlimited minutes, text and data) and drop to the lowest minutes/text/but keep unlimited LTE...and from there, open another line of service with say 6gb along with minutes and text?
From there I would port my old number from the unlimited LTE account to the new line of service....then take the sim from the unlimited LTE and use it in a MiFi?
God I hope this makes sense.
So to recap, open a new line, drop minutes to a minimum on old unlimited LTE plan, swap numbers....use the unlimited LTE line as a MiFi with voice minutes that will never be used...and use the new line as my "new" "phone" line....
Thank god for any help....I think I got it down...

oh and this is all because I refuse to do business with Time Warner! Which other than Verizon DSL is the only provider available (FiOS is only blocks away...but it's blocks away)!

Just call your dsl provider and report trouble on your dsl line so a technician can fix it.

No it won't work. The unlimited data feature for phones and the internet feature used for mifis is different. If you put that sim in either the mifi won't activate or you'll be switched to the default 5gb plan for mifis. It would be nice if it was that easy.

There's no way to port your number to another line of Verizon service. You could change your number but that would only permanently erase your previous line not make it so you could port it.

And the only way to "port" your number to another account would be through assumption of liability which would mean the account would have to be in someone else's name. Your unlimited data feature is tied to that line and and the number that is currently on it. Sorry for all the edits. I just re read your post and wanted to make sure I covered all your bases.

While I'm sure that's the official line that Verizon employees have been told, that is not what has been publicly stated by Verizon (see phonenews.com/verizon-affirms-unlimited-smartphone-sim-card-usage-in-hotspots-tablets-lte-ipad-20053/). I can confirm that I have been able to switch my 4G sim card into the Samsung 4G hotspot sold (or previously sold) by Verizon without any data cap.
My plan did not change, the device automatically provisioned, and I was able to easily return to my previously used phone. I've done this over the course of the past year a dozen times (at least) and have even received troubleshooting from Verizon with the hotspot activated on the account.
I never realized how much Sprint was throttling my unlimited data plan. I always thought it was just crappy service from Sprint. Since the government fined AT&T, Sprint and I think T-Mobile stopped the practice.
This month I used 33.57GB /Unlimited. How much did you use?
I use around 18 on average. Sprint is suppose to throttle after 23gb.

Thanks for the article. Base on that they apparently cannot/will not throttle me as I updated my phone before today and I am on an "old" unlimited plan AND I don't foresee any need to upgrade my Galaxy Note 5 in two years!

what's sad is that you got a lot of corporate white knights here and in lotsa forums that defend this kinda bull. i'm not really a heavy user and spread my data b/t my verizon and sprint phones, but i'm mostly on wifi. if you sell unlimited then screw a limit.
right now 23GB is plenty for me, but I don't see why anyone else who's paid for unlimited shouldn't be able to use it with no limits - it's what they sold and what we pay for!

I use my unlimited to tether to my other devices in the vehicle while traveling (I'm typically the one driving), around 6-8 devices in the van at a time and I get well over 200gb at least 3 months out of the year. I refuse to give up my unlimited!

I have averaged 60+ a month for the past several years. Only ever got one letter saying, "hey, we are watching you."

So I want to be able to hot-spot without forking even more $$ to verizon. I have HTC M8 now, and it involved getting s-off/rooting, and then modifying settings xml page.
Can I do something similar with Pixel 2?
Plan:
1) Buy Pixel 2 Unlocked
2) connect to wifi and get all the updates
3) root with: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2/how-to/guide-unlock-flash-root-pixel-2-walleye-t3702417
4) insert my Verizon SIM card and activat
5) Modify setting page? /system/build.prop
What do you guys and gals think?

What plan are you on? I had grandfathered unlimited for years (750 mins/unlimited text) and had to hack my phone to tether without paying extra. Now I'm on the new unlimited which is cheaper then the old one and I get unlimited talk/text/data and 10GB of free tether a month. No hacking involved. I recommend switching if you haven't already.

How is that possible? They're throttling all unlimited accounts. The grandfathered accounts are throttled if you're in the top few percentage of users in a certain area (which you'd have to be) and the new unlimited accounts get 20-30 GB's before they start throttling us.

I don't know. Maybe I am not in my area, or they are but with my usage model it is not noticeable. In either case for now it's advantages for me to remain on my plan, and I would like to continue tethering with a new phone.

Just make sure you get a Google version. The Verizon version is locked. You'll want to unlock the bootloader before you spend any time setting up the phone as it'll wipe it. I never had to hack the Pixel since I've been on new unlimited since I got my P1 but if you know what to change in build.prop then your instructions should work as you intend.

wrong. The FCC made it illegal for Verizon to throttle unlimited users. I never get throttled and my pixel 2 arrives today! This month I got 74gb on my Nexus 6

Wrong! The new unlimited plans CAN get throttled after 22gb. The grandfathered unlimited plans CAN get throttled if you're in the top 1% of users in a congested area. And the FCC didn't make it illegal for them to throttle, they made it illegal for them to sim lock their phones. Verizon has issued more than one announcement about throttling but almost always retracted it shortly after due to customer complaints.
I guess if you live in a small town that happens to get great Verizon service and you download a lot of porn it's possible to use 74gb a month without getting throttled. If you've ever been a major sporting event, parade, airport, etc you HAVE been throttled. My phone would sometimes show LTE but take 20+ seconds just to load Google's homepage in congested areas. Now I don't have that issue as I stay around 15-20gb a month so I never get throttled.

I was on the grandfathered unlimited for 15+ years. If you're in the top 1% of Verizon users in a congested area, you will be throttled. It used to happen to me every time we went to a football game or anywhere else with a lot of people around. Also my day to day speeds were overall slower. I used to get around 20-30 mbps. I just pulled this speed test from work (a big metal factory).
