Oh, and I just noticed you're on Rogers. I think they don't disable tethering/hotspot anyway.

On Rogers you can tether by wifi, usb, or even BT... It's your cellular data and you can use it with whichever device you wish. We had a bad storm here several months ago and my internet was down for a couple of days so I just popped on the wifi hotspot on my phone (SGS at the time) and it was fine (well slow because it was just HSPA+). I've since upgraded to the SGSII LTE, and got my daughter an Experia Arc and they both tether or supply a hotspot just fine.
Jamie

I guess in the states they like to block tethering due to the unlimited data plans. In Canada we don't have unlimited plans so the carriers couldn't care less if we tether.

On T-Mobile in the US you can, but AT&T is run by greedy dicks so you have to work around it

I have the 2GB lte plan but I cant tether with rogers without paying.....

Are you certain??? I am on an LTE plan with Rogers too and I tethered my laptop this morning (since I was lucky enough to get somebody else to drive today)... I was able to log into work and answer all the most urgent e-mails and cancel the meetings that I don't feel like having on the first day back after our break before ever getting to my desk.

[Q] Does TMobile wifi calling have separate data?

I know on Sprint that using tethering does not come out of your phone's data bucket but instead wifi hotspot/tether has a seperate tethering bucket it pulls from.
Is this the same if you PAY for tethering on TMobile? Or will it use my phones bucket of data?

You can use it for free as long you don't exceed your plan's limit. It counts against your data allowance, but if you continuously go over the limit, T-Mobile will send you a notice. And if you disregard it they will block the tethering on your phone. Now, if you buy a tethering plan, it will be separate from your phone's data plan.
i'm a customer service representative, I've been working for TMOUS for the past 4 years.
Wi Fi calling, has nothing to do with your capped data package ie 200 mb/ 2GB/ 5gb/ 10gb plans.. Wifi calling feature is using your source of cable or dsl connect via wireless router.
IF you're worried you many use all your minutes, then call 611 and ask your agent to add the free unlimited wifi calling. simple.
second part, hotspot is kinda different, its tethering using the data service and yes this can cause reduced speeds. no separate bucket, just the one i mention above... keep track of your usage by dailing #963# and hit the call key.

my network will let you use it free for about 100 mb before, you receive a text message requesting you call tmous cs to add tether to your account per line using this feature at $15 per month. (you can't be with the 200mb plan) >
the network reads the mac address of your computer.. ipods and simple device seems to slip by without alert.
Oh im nlt worried about WiFi calling. I know how that works and never have to use it...
But i have the Preferred Android Web plan.. Which is basically still 5gb of data. Ive also worked for TMobile for 3yrs up until this feature was released. I now work for At&t ironically lol.
But our tethering at at&t uses different data.. So the data you use for apps and mobile web aren't touched by tethering.
It uses a separate 5gb of data for tethering so it basically it's own data plan when you pay for it that way separately.
So basically, if i pay for tethering package on TMobile im STILL using my same 5gb mobile data and not a separate 5gb tethering bucket, right???
I hope you actually get what i mean.
Thanks.

so i currently have 1 mt4g and i was curious if i add a line to my tmo account with another mt4g and root and add a custom rom do i need to have the "wifi tether feature" tmo is offering me a freee mt4g and its only gonna cost me an extra 27 dollars a month which is cheaper than any other mobile internet provider. so essentialy what im asking is do i need that "wifi tethering feature" enabled by tmo if i already have the unlimtied data and on a custom rom that offers wifi tethering option...

According to the ToS that you signed you will be required to use the paid feature. In the real world no you will not. But you will only have 5Gb of data to use per month before they throttle you back, to somewhere between EDGE and GRPS speeds. Virtually making using the internet or AD-HOC tether useless.

If I understand you correctly you want to know if you need WiFi tethering feature enabled by T-Mobile.. as explained by the above posted. And addition. if you tell them anything other than just give me the 5/10gb data plan you might be asking for trouble.. you can download a WiFi tethering app..and you realize the phone comes with WiFi hotspot as well..and yes after you get throttled the phone is basically useless except if you have sense 3/3.5 which makes the phone more valuables and useful...again dependibgon where you are your throttled speed might be bearable, and I've seen some people with at least 1mbps throttled speed compared to 56kbps throttled speed for majority of us...

Couple of questions about this phone and ATT

Upon searching I got too many results to filter through on these 2 questions...
1. Can i get 4g on this phone if I didn't buy it straight through ATT? I tried enabling it on my plan online and it flags that it's not my registered phone so it kicked it out.
2. Can I enable tethering without paying ATT? I've tried a few different apps but the ATT stuff still kills it.

The phone differentiates between Edge, 3G, and H+ (HSPDA), what some *say* can be called 4G. But if it is LTE that the web site is calling 4G, then the Inspire doesn't have that.

I beg to differ, I've been tethering for years on my unlimited data plan and have never paid a cent for it. I don't use obscene amounts of data while doing it though.
OP, rooting and installing a custom rom will let you tether for free as long as you don't get caught.

Its only a matter of time. Att is watching the packets sent, so you will be caught soon enough.
ive used tethering scince I got my iPhone 3G which was my first phone and ATT hasn't said anything about it and I don't see why people think its wrong, YOU pay for the data YOU should be able to use it any way you want including tethering.
H+, 3G, EDGE, on an aftermarket rom you can enable tethering but you may get a letter fron ATT saying they noticed you were using tethering and if you continue tethering they may add a $45 tether plan to your account...

Unless you have a data plan that includes tethering, doing so is a violation of the terms of service you agreed to, that's what's wrong.
OP, call AT&T and tell them what phone you're using. They should put in the appropriate data plan at no add'l cost or loss of unlimited data, if that's what you have. I got moved from a "regular" 3G plan to one that is HSPA compatible when I got my Inspire.
Of course, if you're referring to LTE, that wont work on the Inspire.

I am curious about your comment about being against tethering. Can you expand on that. I am trying to learn more on the topic. I will not flash a custom rom - have gotten use to SENSE.
I find AT&T being greedy by charging their customers a premium to tether. I pay $25 a month for 2GB and they want me to pay an additional $20 to tether and get another 2GB. I rarely use the 2GB I have now and want to tether when I am not at home when I travel usually. If I go over my 2GB limit, I have to pay $10 for each GB over 2. I am more than happy to pay the $20 more if I use the 2GB but having to pay it each month makes no sense to me - other than carrier greed. --- how does it hurt their network or other customers?
ATT is not the only one that charges extra for tethering. So does, T-mobile, Sprint, and Verizon. So before you start calling them greedy just stop and think. To say I am totally against tethering may have not been the correct words out of my mouth. ATT has let tethering slide for many years for those that just do it once in awhile for emails or occassional browsing. So they are greedy ehhh? But in this technical day and age there are those that abuse it. Some that just go too far with what they use it for and how much data they use. And that does make it bad for others in certain areas where the bandwith may get diluted. So ATT, like other carriers had to cap it off to make it fair for everyone. The ATT service is meant for your phone and not your home computer.
Buying a gun does not give you the right to take it out in the woods and shoot anything you want. You still need a license for what you shoot. If you travel that much then you can afford $20 extra a month. If you use it that little then seriously root your phone and take your chance tethering. You don't have to give up sense. I am running a ROM that looks and runs exactly like the Inspire 2.47 ROM except I don't have messaging bugs, most of my ads are gone, and I can tether with Hotspot if I so need to.

You are correct with this. Tethering should only be disallowed with the unlimited plan, as it has never been allowed with it. With the tethering plan, AT&T is not charging you more to tether. It is forcing you to buy more data for tethering. Since data is sold as blocks with the tiered plans and you pay for additional data used, tethering should be included with those plans. If you go over the 2GB, you are going to pay an additional &10 per GB and would end up paying $45 for 4GB anyways. AT&T not being so greedy would allow a person that only needs to tether a small amount in a pinch and doesn't go over the 2GB to not have to purchase additional data when they didn't need it. AT&T has it structured like everyone that wants to tether will use excess amounts of data. This is simlpy not true, and for those that do, the need to purchase additional data covers that. Now, the unlimited is different because one can tether greater amounts of data and not have to pay anymore. But with the tired plans, since data is bought I'm blocks, there is no way for abuse.

The unlimited data is NOT lost. Data is still unlimited. But if you switch your sim from a phone that is not HSPA-compatible (like an iPhone) to one that is, you won't realize the faster data speeds unless you let AT&T know you've changed, and they change you over to an HSPA plan. But unlimited data wont change if you're already grandfathered in.

Me too. SIM doesn't matter. Coding in the system doesn't matter. Hardware (radio) in the phone and software (radio, build.prop, apn, etc) configuration on the phone matters when it comes to which network your device is going to connect to

There was a time awhile back when I tethered with my Windows phone, but rarely went over 1gb total usage for the month. I have never tethered with my Inspire, yet last month I went just over 4gb of usage. I know it is against the terms to tether with the unlimited, but for me, it is not more a matter if you tether or not, but a matter if you abuse it or not. And even if you don't tether, you could still use massive amounts of data on this phone. I know I could with the Netflix app alone.

I believe you can as long as your not on a Unlimited data plan. I'm on a Share everything plan 2GB and occasionally tether.
I am on a Nationwide Talk & Text plan with 4GB data and Verizon wanted to charge me a monthly tethering fee. I'm now running Carbon ROM which allows me to tether w/o the Verizon restrictions or fees.

Well I called Verizon and I was told that I have to pay 20 a month for 3g and 30 for 4g phones. I forgot to ask that if I use an app to do it if I will get charged. Ugh wondering if I should call again...

I haven't tethered in a long time so I don't know if this has been cut off or what. I use to tether for free no problem on the Verizon stock ROM. It was built in. Just don't go over your data cap. It's not hard to go over if you're using 4G LTE & you plan to stream music or watch a good amount of videos.

Nexus 5 tethering block?

I'm on T-Mobile US and tethering have been working fine for me without paying for the extra tethering fee on my Nexus 4. I can do wifi and bluetooth tether to ipad, nexus 7, and a laptop with user agent switching. Got my Nexus 5 today and nothing works, I keep on getting the upsell page even after playing around with different APN settings. Put my sim back in my N4 everything works. Anyone experiencing the same issue? Maybe Google changed something in KitKat.

What T-Mobile plan do you have?
Supposedly they are giving free wifi hotspot access with nearly all of their plans now, even prepaid.
Perhaps you need to check your APN or register the imei # somehow with T-Mobile.
I had to upgrade/downgrade myself today cause I was using a $10 unlimited web plan with my galaxy nexus, but when I tried to use the fast.-t-mobile.com APN (for LTE access) I got the upsell page as well, no data at all.
What I went ahead and did was sign up for the $30 prepaid plan (100 mins 5gb data) and transferred my number over etc, worked great. I had a micro sim activation kit though, which asked for IMEI number etc. Supposedly I will have wifi hotspot access @ 100mb/month but I haven't tested it yet.

Maybe, but I don't think you will get LTE with that plan, T-mobile seems to be blocking it with the fast.t-mobile.com APN.
At any rate, I've already switched to the $30 plan, and its working fine (haven't tested wifi hotspot yet though)

Blocked for me as well. I'm on a post-paid plan. 1000 minutes and unlimited data. I mainly use the tethering with my iPad. Works with Nexus 4, but not with the Nexus 5.
I may be sending the 5 back, as this is a major issue for me.

Not exactly sure which plan you have but I'm pretty sure T-Mobile is now including free wifi hotspot/tethering for free now. How much monthly data allowed depends on your plan.
If they are giving it to prepaid folks there is no reason why you shouldn't be getting it.
If you install the T-Mobile My account app from the play store see if it shows "mobile hotspot balance". If not I would call them as inquire about it. Don't return it too quickly...

LTE been working fine for me on both N4 and N5, I wish I can drop down to the $30 plan, but I use more than 100min a month =(.

Ok I remember reading you need to have one of their "Simple Choice" plans to get the free mobile hotspot. You might have to change your plan, not sure if it will cost you more to do so though...
I'm assuming the plan you have now is unlimited, and you don't want to switch to the 2.5gb plan, and if you go up to unlimited its probably going to cost you more than you are paying now...

Only their new plans offer free wifi hotspot. The issue is I don't think it's my plan, if I put my sim back into my N4 tethering works fine.

I've used tethering with my Value Plan (1000min/unlimited data) for over a year now. It just doesn't work with the Nexus 5, put the sim back in my Nexus 4 and it works fine. My plan didn't officially come with tethering. It worked fine with my iPad and android tablets. It would present the blocked message on my laptop. I was okay with that, since I didn't subscribe to an "official" tethering plan.
I don't know if this will be fixed with a custom rom, becuase it seems like it is at the core of KitKat. I also tried flashing the bare AOSP ROM, and tethering was blocked with that as well.
Also seeing the blocked tethering over here. On the $30 Tmobile plan and the Nexus 4 works perfectly tethering. Put the same sim into the Nexus 5 and it just redirects me to the sign in page for Tmobile. Hope this is fixed or this will be a massive negative towards this phone, probably even a deal breaker.

My doesn't officially comes with tethering either, but it always worked for tablets. On laptop I just change the user agent and it works fine. Have you look into any of the tethering apps? I have no idea if they're any better than the built in one.

You are seeing the redirect on your PC? In the past I noticed I had to change the user-agent on my PC's web browser to Mobile for it to let me past T-mobile's blocking.
Are you trying through a PC? Try tethering another mobile device like a tablet or phone and see if it works...

I'll try that in a minute. Either way, the chromebook was able to tether with the nexus 4 without problems every time.

Does not work on tablets or mobile phones. Changing user agent on laptop no longer works.

I think it is a T-Mobile thing, as I see other people talking about successfully tethering their nexus 5 all over the place. Might just be a small subset of T-Mobile users. Either way its very annoying. Wouldn't be the end of the world if I had to use a different app to tether, but I don't even know if that would or could work.

You have to figure only a small subset of users have received theirs yet, and an even tinier subset of them even care about tethering, and even a smaller subset of then have even tried it yet. Every Nexus device is a disaster until you let it settle in for a week or two and let the wrinkles settle out.
Change 4g data plan
There's a new 4g data plan which includes 2.5GB hotspot data. You still get unlimited phone data for the same price as before. $20/mo.
