[Q] Can you tether with 2gb plan? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi, back in August 2012, verizon made tethering free for people with 2gb plans, and not unlimited. Does this still apply for us 2gb users? I'm not sure if it still applies. I used clockworkmod tether, and it worked well, i just that the data cap on it. Thanks
Heres a link about it

I believe you can as long as your not on a Unlimited data plan. I'm on a Share everything plan 2GB and occasionally tether.

I am on a Nationwide Talk & Text plan with 4GB data and Verizon wanted to charge me a monthly tethering fee. I'm now running Carbon ROM which allows me to tether w/o the Verizon restrictions or fees.

Edit* I called again and asked if i use a tethering app from the play store, will I be charged. Verizon said no, i will only be charged for going over my 2gb plan. I hope that information is correct.
Well I called Verizon and I was told that I have to pay 20 a month for 3g and 30 for 4g phones. I forgot to ask that if I use an app to do it if I will get charged. Ugh wondering if I should call again...

I haven't tethered in a long time so I don't know if this has been cut off or what. I use to tether for free no problem on the Verizon stock ROM. It was built in. Just don't go over your data cap. It's not hard to go over if you're using 4G LTE & you plan to stream music or watch a good amount of videos.

$30 4G Unlimited Tethering Plan confirmed!!

In case anyone cares, I was able to add the $30 Unlimited 4G hotspot tethering plan to my T-bolt account. At first the rep was not aware of the plan but after some digging around she located the code to use. She then had to read through to make sure it was unlimited, and it is.
Now lets see how much data I can chew through before they throttle me back.
Why wouldn't you just root and tether for free? :-/

I'm tethering right now using my droid incredible. I haven't paid for a tethering plan. I hear only the stock verizon tether app alerts you of a needed data plan if used.
I am rooted and although it's tempting to use the wireless tether app, I'd rather not violate the carrier TOS and end up with a very large cell bill. It's $30/mo for my own peace of mind. I live and work in a very good 4G area so it's worth it for me since it's much faster than my AT&T DSL (3.0mb/s) home internet. If and when Verizon throttle me back I will make a decision on whether to keep it or not. I am not against using the tether apps, don't get me wrong, I just choose not to use them.
Disregarding the fact that you could do this for free, that is a very good deal.

Kudos to you, my man. That is a pretty great deal, although something tells me it'll have the whole "this isn't meant to replace your home internet connection" language in the fine print somewhere.

I agree. Maybe I will get a good couple of months out of it before I have to switch to a real internet provider..
My intentions here were just to let others know the rumors of the unlimited hotspot plan were actually true for those that might want to grab it up.
Thanks for the info op. That's cool news.
I'm not rooted and didn't add $30 tether feature today....I've been able to still use TBOLT hotspot for free.

So, according to what i found on the internet, this is a $30/month charge for those who are grandfathered in to the $30/month unlimited data plan. So if you want tethering, your grand total would add up to $60/month, correct?

That is a good question. I am not sure if a new customer with a tiered 3G/4G data plan can get the unlimited 4G hotspot. Maybe a Verizon rep will chime in. But yes, my total is $60 on top of the voice plan/text costs.

after switching to verizon, I was going to turn off my time warner hotspot and just eat the etf thinking I would just pay for tethering as needed. But time warner gave me 30 bucks/month in discounts and free showtime for me to keep it. So my hotspot (based on sprints 3g/4g) is only costing me 10bucks a month. Nice to have so that when I don't get verizon 4g, I probably get sprints.
I decided to cancel my fios tv and internet service and rely solely on the vzw 4g so I ponied up the 30/month. Well worth it IMO.

[Q] Tmobile store changed plan to 5gb without permission. getting old plan possible?

So in April when i picked up my G2X i decided to go to the local Tmobile store to get my phone because i didnt want to wait for shipping and for once decided to save a few bucks and get the contract extension rather than pay outright.
when there setting everything up I was told I needed a new sim card for 4G.
I thought that was odd because I was already given a "new" 4G sim for that reason on my nexus one.
I specifically told the clerk i did NOT want the new 5GB plan because of the data throttling and wanted to keep my old plan. he said no problem.
I have since found out the hard way I am now on the 5GB plan and constantly get the throttle text message and its pissing me off.
Ive tried calling Tmobile and I always end up with someone who barely speaks English and doesn't understand what my problem is.
I explain i want my old plan and not to be data throttled and they read from a script explaining it doesnt cut off my internet or charge me extra.
has anyone dealt with this and succesfully got the old plan back?
even with constantly being on WIFI when its available ( and killing my battery )
i go over 5gb and it sucks.
Everybody got switched to 5GB, I don't think anybody wanted it either. You can't get unthrottled data plans anymore. The only thing you could do is "upgrade" to the 10GB plan.
Sent from my MIUI G2x using XDA Premium App
Well that blows, i was under the impression if you dont change your plan they are obligated to give you the service you've always had.
I havent checked the 10GB price but considering what I am paying now I doubt I will be willing to pay it.
it sucks paying more money for lesser service.
so far in the last few months I feel like Tmobile, My bank, insurance & Sirius have all bent me over & screwed me without dinner or a thank you....
Just curious, how long have you had unthrottled data? I got switched to the 5GB plan back in October of last year.
Sent from my MIUI G2x using XDA Premium App
How it was explained to me, T-Mobile always had the 5 gb limit. They just didn't enforce it automatically like they do now. It was hidden away in the fine print way back that 5 gb was the limit for high speed data, they just had no way of actually throttling til they got the 4g network up and running. So we are screwed. I can't even upgrade to the 10gb plan since I'm on and old myfavs family plan so its not an option for me.

Wait, it's $60 on top of what you're paying for phone/messaging ?
You are guys are lucky you don't get throttled until 5gb. The two major carriers in Thailand throttle you down to Edge speeds on 3G after reaching 2Gb on one and 3Gb on the other on their so-called unlimited data plans.

Couple of questions about this phone and ATT

Upon searching I got too many results to filter through on these 2 questions...
1. Can i get 4g on this phone if I didn't buy it straight through ATT? I tried enabling it on my plan online and it flags that it's not my registered phone so it kicked it out.
2. Can I enable tethering without paying ATT? I've tried a few different apps but the ATT stuff still kills it.

The phone differentiates between Edge, 3G, and H+ (HSPDA), what some *say* can be called 4G. But if it is LTE that the web site is calling 4G, then the Inspire doesn't have that.

I beg to differ, I've been tethering for years on my unlimited data plan and have never paid a cent for it. I don't use obscene amounts of data while doing it though.
OP, rooting and installing a custom rom will let you tether for free as long as you don't get caught.

Its only a matter of time. Att is watching the packets sent, so you will be caught soon enough.
ive used tethering scince I got my iPhone 3G which was my first phone and ATT hasn't said anything about it and I don't see why people think its wrong, YOU pay for the data YOU should be able to use it any way you want including tethering.
H+, 3G, EDGE, on an aftermarket rom you can enable tethering but you may get a letter fron ATT saying they noticed you were using tethering and if you continue tethering they may add a $45 tether plan to your account...

Unless you have a data plan that includes tethering, doing so is a violation of the terms of service you agreed to, that's what's wrong.
OP, call AT&T and tell them what phone you're using. They should put in the appropriate data plan at no add'l cost or loss of unlimited data, if that's what you have. I got moved from a "regular" 3G plan to one that is HSPA compatible when I got my Inspire.
Of course, if you're referring to LTE, that wont work on the Inspire.

I am curious about your comment about being against tethering. Can you expand on that. I am trying to learn more on the topic. I will not flash a custom rom - have gotten use to SENSE.
I find AT&T being greedy by charging their customers a premium to tether. I pay $25 a month for 2GB and they want me to pay an additional $20 to tether and get another 2GB. I rarely use the 2GB I have now and want to tether when I am not at home when I travel usually. If I go over my 2GB limit, I have to pay $10 for each GB over 2. I am more than happy to pay the $20 more if I use the 2GB but having to pay it each month makes no sense to me - other than carrier greed. --- how does it hurt their network or other customers?
ATT is not the only one that charges extra for tethering. So does, T-mobile, Sprint, and Verizon. So before you start calling them greedy just stop and think. To say I am totally against tethering may have not been the correct words out of my mouth. ATT has let tethering slide for many years for those that just do it once in awhile for emails or occassional browsing. So they are greedy ehhh? But in this technical day and age there are those that abuse it. Some that just go too far with what they use it for and how much data they use. And that does make it bad for others in certain areas where the bandwith may get diluted. So ATT, like other carriers had to cap it off to make it fair for everyone. The ATT service is meant for your phone and not your home computer.
Buying a gun does not give you the right to take it out in the woods and shoot anything you want. You still need a license for what you shoot. If you travel that much then you can afford $20 extra a month. If you use it that little then seriously root your phone and take your chance tethering. You don't have to give up sense. I am running a ROM that looks and runs exactly like the Inspire 2.47 ROM except I don't have messaging bugs, most of my ads are gone, and I can tether with Hotspot if I so need to.

You are correct with this. Tethering should only be disallowed with the unlimited plan, as it has never been allowed with it. With the tethering plan, AT&T is not charging you more to tether. It is forcing you to buy more data for tethering. Since data is sold as blocks with the tiered plans and you pay for additional data used, tethering should be included with those plans. If you go over the 2GB, you are going to pay an additional &10 per GB and would end up paying $45 for 4GB anyways. AT&T not being so greedy would allow a person that only needs to tether a small amount in a pinch and doesn't go over the 2GB to not have to purchase additional data when they didn't need it. AT&T has it structured like everyone that wants to tether will use excess amounts of data. This is simlpy not true, and for those that do, the need to purchase additional data covers that. Now, the unlimited is different because one can tether greater amounts of data and not have to pay anymore. But with the tired plans, since data is bought I'm blocks, there is no way for abuse.

The unlimited data is NOT lost. Data is still unlimited. But if you switch your sim from a phone that is not HSPA-compatible (like an iPhone) to one that is, you won't realize the faster data speeds unless you let AT&T know you've changed, and they change you over to an HSPA plan. But unlimited data wont change if you're already grandfathered in.

Me too. SIM doesn't matter. Coding in the system doesn't matter. Hardware (radio) in the phone and software (radio, build.prop, apn, etc) configuration on the phone matters when it comes to which network your device is going to connect to

There was a time awhile back when I tethered with my Windows phone, but rarely went over 1gb total usage for the month. I have never tethered with my Inspire, yet last month I went just over 4gb of usage. I know it is against the terms to tether with the unlimited, but for me, it is not more a matter if you tether or not, but a matter if you abuse it or not. And even if you don't tether, you could still use massive amounts of data on this phone. I know I could with the Netflix app alone.

Unlimited data still?!

So I recently upgraded from the droid x2 and the Verizon rep said that my data is at 2 GB per month since I'm on a shared plan with two other people. She told Me they would keep their unlimited data untill they upgrade themselves. When I get the service summary it says I still have unlimited data. Anyone cancelled for using Unlocked Wifi Hotspot?

I am considering adding a line on my account specifically for using the wifi hotspot because it would be the same price as my internet and way faster. I was just wondering if anyone who uses their hotspot very heavily for internet has had warnings from sprint about their hotspot usage?
Wasn't sure if this should go in Q&A or not since it's not a specific phone question necessarily.
The most I used in a month was 5gbs. Im about to reach 4gb this month and haven't gotten a warning from sprint using the modded unlock wifi Hotspot. You shouldn't get a warning from them about hotapot since your not using Hotspot data but your phones data instead. How much gb are you trying to use a month? If you use alot of data each month than sprint might send a letter or notify you about excess use of data but that's like if you go over 40 or 50gb of data i think.
