Nexus 5 tethering block? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm on T-Mobile US and tethering have been working fine for me without paying for the extra tethering fee on my Nexus 4. I can do wifi and bluetooth tether to ipad, nexus 7, and a laptop with user agent switching. Got my Nexus 5 today and nothing works, I keep on getting the upsell page even after playing around with different APN settings. Put my sim back in my N4 everything works. Anyone experiencing the same issue? Maybe Google changed something in KitKat.

What T-Mobile plan do you have?
Supposedly they are giving free wifi hotspot access with nearly all of their plans now, even prepaid.
Perhaps you need to check your APN or register the imei # somehow with T-Mobile.
I had to upgrade/downgrade myself today cause I was using a $10 unlimited web plan with my galaxy nexus, but when I tried to use the fast.-t-mobile.com APN (for LTE access) I got the upsell page as well, no data at all.
What I went ahead and did was sign up for the $30 prepaid plan (100 mins 5gb data) and transferred my number over etc, worked great. I had a micro sim activation kit though, which asked for IMEI number etc. Supposedly I will have wifi hotspot access @ 100mb/month but I haven't tested it yet.

Blocked for me as well. I'm on a post-paid plan. 1000 minutes and unlimited data. I mainly use the tethering with my iPad. Works with Nexus 4, but not with the Nexus 5.
I may be sending the 5 back, as this is a major issue for me.

I'm on old grandfather plan with prefer android unlimited web. I think this is something new with 4.4, maybe a custom ROM will fix it.

Maybe, but I don't think you will get LTE with that plan, T-mobile seems to be blocking it with the fast.t-mobile.com APN.
At any rate, I've already switched to the $30 plan, and its working fine (haven't tested wifi hotspot yet though)

Not exactly sure which plan you have but I'm pretty sure T-Mobile is now including free wifi hotspot/tethering for free now. How much monthly data allowed depends on your plan.
If they are giving it to prepaid folks there is no reason why you shouldn't be getting it.
If you install the T-Mobile My account app from the play store see if it shows "mobile hotspot balance". If not I would call them as inquire about it. Don't return it too quickly...

Ok I remember reading you need to have one of their "Simple Choice" plans to get the free mobile hotspot. You might have to change your plan, not sure if it will cost you more to do so though...
I'm assuming the plan you have now is unlimited, and you don't want to switch to the 2.5gb plan, and if you go up to unlimited its probably going to cost you more than you are paying now...

Only their new plans offer free wifi hotspot. The issue is I don't think it's my plan, if I put my sim back into my N4 tethering works fine.

I've used tethering with my Value Plan (1000min/unlimited data) for over a year now. It just doesn't work with the Nexus 5, put the sim back in my Nexus 4 and it works fine. My plan didn't officially come with tethering. It worked fine with my iPad and android tablets. It would present the blocked message on my laptop. I was okay with that, since I didn't subscribe to an "official" tethering plan.
I don't know if this will be fixed with a custom rom, becuase it seems like it is at the core of KitKat. I also tried flashing the bare AOSP ROM, and tethering was blocked with that as well.

Also seeing the blocked tethering over here. On the $30 Tmobile plan and the Nexus 4 works perfectly tethering. Put the same sim into the Nexus 5 and it just redirects me to the sign in page for Tmobile. Hope this is fixed or this will be a massive negative towards this phone, probably even a deal breaker.

My doesn't officially comes with tethering either, but it always worked for tablets. On laptop I just change the user agent and it works fine. Have you look into any of the tethering apps? I have no idea if they're any better than the built in one.

You are seeing the redirect on your PC? In the past I noticed I had to change the user-agent on my PC's web browser to Mobile for it to let me past T-mobile's blocking.
Are you trying through a PC? Try tethering another mobile device like a tablet or phone and see if it works...

I'll try that in a minute. Either way, the chromebook was able to tether with the nexus 4 without problems every time.

I think it is a T-Mobile thing, as I see other people talking about successfully tethering their nexus 5 all over the place. Might just be a small subset of T-Mobile users. Either way its very annoying. Wouldn't be the end of the world if I had to use a different app to tether, but I don't even know if that would or could work.

You have to figure only a small subset of users have received theirs yet, and an even tinier subset of them even care about tethering, and even a smaller subset of then have even tried it yet. Every Nexus device is a disaster until you let it settle in for a week or two and let the wrinkles settle out.

Change 4g data plan
There's a new 4g data plan which includes 2.5GB hotspot data. You still get unlimited phone data for the same price as before. $20/mo.

T-Mobile now charging 14.99 for wifi sharing

This is bull****. Yesterday I was using my mobile ap on my computer and everything was going fine. Then a message popped up in my browser saying to continue using the mobile ap I need to add it to my plan for 14.99. Idk about all of you but I've had no problems since I got this phone at launch using the wifi sharing is there a way around this cuz T-Mobile is really starting to piss me off.

Yep, don't use the t-mobile tether app download wifi tether for root users from the market and use that. I'm assuming you are rooted?
Yea I'm rooted lol I've tried 3 tethring apps off the market and they had the same result as the built in one. I can't find the one your talking about tho. All I'm finding is the ones I already tried.

OP: have you gone over your high-speed data cap? i read somewhere that Tmo mainly charges for tethering if you use a LOT of data. but yeah, that would suck if they are now charging for the use of the data we have already purchased!

It sounds like it's not the wifi app that's doing it, but the t-mobile data servers. I imagine they're acting as a captive portal, redirecting pageloads from a browser with a desktop user agent to their nag screen or something along those lines. I use a Sidekick 4G with the stock firmware and wifi app up here in Canada on the Wind network and it's been working fine.
(BTW, Wind beats the crap out of any American carrier! Their plans include free tethering.)
Networks are greedy they suck.

A lot of the android browsers are able to set user agent as desktop so I doubt it's that. They have blocked the free tether apps from the market and only provide theirs so I think it's just them monitoring their app.
BTW I'm jealous of your free tethering, as soon as the carriers heard people were doing it here they were quick to monopolize on it
Well, if t-mobile is able to interfere with wifi tethering even when you use a third party wifi tethering app, then there must be something else at play. I can't say what though as I'm not on t-mobile.
<brag> Wind is even better than that. $40.00 after tax for unlimited calling, unlimited long distance to US/Can, unlimited text messaging to anywhere on earth, unlimited data with tethering. And I get that whenever I'm connect to a Wind tower, anywhere in Canada. It doesn't distinguish between my home city and another. And no contract. It's prepaid! </brag>

What I mean is they block them in the actual market, like you can't download them. They have no way of monitoring 3rd party apps, that's why I think almost all US carriers have capped data so they can try and stop some.
Not fair man, US needs to get on bord with the contract free stuff. A cheap cell phone plan here for unlimitted is $80 a month and that comes with a 2 year contract, at&t and verizon charge around $120 for unlimitted
Have you tried sneaking one of the third party apps on to see how it works?
That's staggeringly awful. This is the most featureful cell phone plan available, and it's $40. I'm told that people in another province got the plan for $35 at one point.
Yeah we have to side load the apps, google search and download from the browser. I've had a copy in my sd card since the g1 days when things were good lol.
We also have at&t trying to buy out t-mobile which would more than likely drive prices up further. there are a few pay as you go carriers that offer cheaper plans for unlimitted data and text (around $40) but the minutes are rarely unlimited, the data is slower, and they are buying towers off the bigger companies so coverage is usually terrible
Not sure if this has been posted yet, but I've always gotten Wireless Tether straight from the Google Code site. It always has the very latest versions, but somtimes earlier ones are the more stable.

Yeah that's the only way you can get a good deal, if you have several lines on an account. Unfortunately us americans aren't into the whole "sharing" thing so finding people to sign up with you tends to be difficult ;P
What?
EDIT: Only post paid costumers have that issue... prepaid still doesn't have the tethering service available... so it is enabled by default. http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/addons...PAsset=InternetEmail&tp=Svc_Tab_TetheringWifi
I'm not sure what everyone is talking about... I'm wifi tethering and I've never seen that message. I only tether to a linux computer though. I'm also on the $30 5GB 4G prepaid plan, with unlimited text and 100 mins (I voip with grooVe).
Maybe they are attacking specific customers... I don't think wifi sharing is even an option for prepaid. Perhaps I should stop paying a month in advanced.

The way tmobile explained it to me was they noticed ppl using it and changed their service if your using it and not getting the message its only a matter of time according to the reps I spoke to. I'm thinking the more data you use that gets picked up as being sent through mobile ap the quicker they catch on and slap you with the message and put a stop to it

I'm on T-mobile prepaid monthly 4g plan, rooted running GingerClone ROM on my Sidekick 4g, and I've had no problem tethering. (mostly just testing it out to see if it works, running speed tests etc.)
I can see how T-mobile cracks down on post-paid plans running stock software, but with a prepaid plan on a wifi-sharing-capable phone with a custom ROM, I'm in the clear, right? T-mobile can't block tethering or charge me for it?
But ya, charging $14.99 to tether using data that you're already paying for is a complete scam. Seems like a class action suit waiting to happen.

T-Mobile Mobile Hotspot

I use my phone as a Mobile Hotspot quite often on my other phone and just wanted to confirm for anyone wondering it works fine for the One S.
I don't have a tethering plan with T-mobile and the default mobile hotspot is working just fine. No changes were needed.
Update
I take back everything I said before. When I picked up my One S the sales rep switched my data plan and didn't tell me. I was moved to the $35 plan with tethering.
I called in and switched it back to the preferred android plan and can no longer tether the phone.
It looks like T-mobile also locked down the APN's on the phone. You don't seem to be allowed to switch or change them on the stock rom.
With the phone rooted I'm able to use: WiFi Tether for Root Users that you can get at the link below.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta14.apk&can=2&q=
T-mobile will usually let you hit an amount and then give you a message that you need to upgrade. The new 5GB and 10GB plan include tethering though.

I have heard this before. I've heard 200 MB is the "courtesy limit". I'll pull down 200 MBs right now and see.
The one s has a block on it.. If you don't have the tether on your plan. it will let you connect but you can't view any web pages but the t-mobile one, letting you know you need to add the option. Also right now you can get it free if you have the 5gb plan. Does not work with android preferred plan .

I hope that we can just flash over the international ROM on this phone.
Root it and put ad block. Then it would be perfect.

Try open garden, the one that looks like a tree, you'll need it on both devices and it creates a mesh network, some caviets are apps tha use data wont work, so you have to do everything through your web browser. This solution also solves the screen off issue while tethering.
As of right now this has been removed or blocked in the newest update.
There is nothing yet been found to allow you to set your own APN again.
You can use wifi tethering with FoxFi as a workaround from foxfi.com/bin but for data to work over wifi tethering you will need to keep the screen on.
That is about the only workaround.

Or use open garden and it makes a mesh network, data still flows with screen off, you'll need open garden on both devices. The only issue is apps that use data like the play store will say your not connected, but anything you want to do with the browser you can.
I know not perfect but thats the closest we have right now, besides keeping the screen on.

This might be a workaround worth trying..

Changing the UA(user-agent) is just one of the few obstacles to overcome. The main problem is the tmo OTA update now prevents/locks us from entering the APN needed to bypass/trick the t-mobile tethering check.

We already do pay for it with our monthly contracts, we are allowed x amount of data per month, we go over it and the speed of data isn't even worth tethering. Do they give us money back on the data we don't use? No they don't, so why can't we use the data we pay for any way we want, it's not like data for a tablet costs more or anything like that, it's just greed on the providers end plain and simple.
I just ended up talking to an agent about my bill and I brought up the fact that I couldn't tether anymore, so they put that back on free of charge. I mean hell I'm already paying a decent amount monthly and I have the 5 gig package (which used to be advertised with transforming your device to a hotspot), there is no reason to ask for more other than greed?

I mean hell I'm already paying a decent amount monthly and I have the 5 gig package (which used to be advertised with transforming your device to a hotspot), there is no reason to ask for more other than greed?

I also have a 5 gig plan and the hotspot is supposed to be free, but my 5 gig plan is old and the only way for me to get the hotspot is for me to give up unlimited messaging, which I then would have to pay $15 a month for, umm, yeah, they got me coming and going. BLAH
I work for tmo, and we do give it for free with the 5 & 10gb plans.
Second, I've noticed that it works with Firefox, but no other browser when tethering to a PC/Mac. I haven't edited my APN.

If you're on unlimited, it's unreasonable to ask for wifi tethering. That's like going to a "all you can eat" restaurant, and then bringing a truck to load with food.

Lol, exactly. That's why there's home internet providers. And if you really just want to use your phone, then just get a 10gb plan that has the free hotspot. You're paying for the investment in network upgrades, your paying the engineers salary to produce a network that's very good.
And of course, the CEO's bonus checks lol

Using other roms i can tether temporarally. Well, i get a push message to stop asap or risk losing access. (Im on that unlimited plan.) so i stop. It does work though tethering to my nexus 7, im assuming because it shows it being a mobile device vs. desktop.
The default rom pushes all tethering through pcweb.tmobile.com which depending on your rate plan, determines if you get tether access. custom roms shouldn't have this setup.
I also have a Nexus 7 and the unlimited plan. I'm rooted on the S1 (no ROMs loaded yet) and am now trying to figure out where to go from here.

You can try a new APN. Menu->Settings->More->Mobile Networks->APN or Access Point Names->Menu->New APN
Name it whatever you want and set the APN to epc.tmobile.com. this should bypass tmobile's tethering block.
Also, I've noticed that even if rooted, a desktop using ie, safari or chrome still gets blocked, but Firefox does not.

Foxfi on Galaxy S6

Just wanted to let everyone know that Foxfi works fine on the S6 edge.
quick question...if you have a standard data plan with wifi tethering included, is there a reason to use FoxFi? or is this only useful for those who are still on an old unlimited plan without the wifi tether option?
Thank you for the update

Does the WiFi hot spot work or just usb?
Awesome!! I was worried about keeping my free wifi with my unlimited data plan. It would suck to pay $700 to keep unlimited data and lose foxfi abilitys. I have a razr hd that I have to click 'install later' every 12 hours to postpone the kitkat update because it stops foxfi. Thanks for sharing the info!!

I've never used Foxfi before (always have been rooted). Does Foxfi limit or throttle your speeds in any way?
Thanks

No foxfi dose not limit or throttle in anyway. The best $10 you'll ever spend. Because you don't have to root you also maintain your warranty. Plus no risk in bricking. I'm on verizon unlimited data plan without paying extra for wifi. I use about 200 gb a month. I have no other option for high speed internet where I live except satilite, and I hate satilite. I've been using foxfi for about 3 years now with no problems.
I have used Foxfi for years now. I had pretty much came to terms with the fact I was going to lose my Foxfi WiFi hotspot when I upgraded to the Galaxy S6.
I went to Verizon today and paid full price for a white 32gb S6, and to my surprise I started up Foxfi and the WiFi hotspot worked first try with no issues!

Thanks! I'm on verizon unlimited too and was worried about being able to wifi tether without root. I'll be getting Foxfi then when my phone gets here next week.
anyone tried using the phone with another network's SIM? and using hotspot on it? On my GS4, I have limited data and therefore free hotspot, but it still runs a subscription check upon launching, which makes it impossible to use the hotspot when another SIM is inserted, this was very annoying when travelling, FoxFi came to the rescue. I was wandering if anyone used another SIM in the S6 and tested the hotspot to see if they fixed that issue.
Is there a way to use foxfi without the use of a screen lock?

It looks like it requires a VPN, which needs to have a screen lock. Good news is the fingerprint scanner works for this, and it very easy.
I know this is a little off topic as far as foxfi is concerned but on topic as far as keeping unlimited data. Has anyone enabled the "advanced calling" yet. I know it dosent cost extra but I am wondering if I turn it on. it is technically a feature so will it take away my unlimited? So far I am loving my s6!

No it will not take your unlimited away, it is just a feature that has to be activated if you want to use the Internet while on a call. I activated it and nothing changed i still have my unlimited.
Hopefully this answers your question.
Good to hear that FoxFi still works. I have it set up but haven't used it yet.
Works Great
Same here foxfi installed and works great. Unfortunately i have to use a lock screen. Currently using the finger print lock and 30 minute to enable the lock. Seems none of the old methods work for disabling lock screen under lollipop.

Unlimited WiFI tethering?

I've been searching for days and can't find an answer to my questions so I'll just ask.
I currently have an S4 with tmobile. It's stock rooted with Fenny's rom and Unlimited Tether Mod. The phone is realiable but i'd like to upgrade.
Since the Note7 has gone up in flames, I've been looking at the only 3 [seemingly] viable options which are the Galaxy S7 [not the edge], HTC M10, and mayve LG v20.
I've been a Samsung customer for years, so I guess I'd lean toward GS7. The only thing that keeps me from pulling the trigger on ANY new phone is whether or not I'll be able to root it and have an UNLIMITED HotSpot Mod. I can't seem to find a definitive answer as to whether thats a possibility for the GS7... is it able to be done? And for that matter, can it be done on the HTC M10 or LG v20... or any other great quality phone available right now [it seems the pickings are slim].
If I can't find a new phone that can do this, I guess I'll be sticking with my S4.
I'm still searching but can't find the answers I need. Nobody has any input?
I asked the same question yesterday, and not even one response....
I understand WifI Router (Root) by fabio works, bought it, and it didnt work for me. I emailed him, and he emailed me back promptly with support, asking me for my ABN settings, so I''m sure it works.
Unfortunately, I unrooted before getting support on my settings, so im waiting here to find out if anybody has rooted a stable PK1 ??? In my case it was not stable, overheated, lagged and eventually after 6 days boot-lopped. (confirmed governor's set to interactive) , and flashed the v15 fixes. I know it can be rooted, but seems less stable - and no clear answers here in our tmobile xda s7 little community.
While waiting for confirmation on stable PK1 root, (and I'm done experimenting), I do get full speed USB tethering in FoxFi. So this is a temporary solution until I see more answers on a stable root.
Can somebody with real success, please help ! thanks in advance !!
I use PDANet+ and works like a charm even on wifi
I forgot to mention my Pda.net (foxfi) was working like a charm too w/o root as well.
However , my foxfi is now handicapped thanks to Tmobile's latest policy changes.
I signed up for unlimited data (which had fine print stating 15 gigs hotspot high speed at lower priority).
First I was sand-bagged the $26 extra for unlimited hotspot on my unlimited account. Since i didnt know this was added without my approval - I removed it.
Then I noticed the new policies and the hotspot throttling.. Other users are reporting the same.
Now my foxfi is shut down to .5kbs - same as the native hotspot app. I have tried other apps with no luck with and without VPN (PIA). Foxfi works unrestricted via USB tether, and that is my current temp solution, until someone here actually verifies a stable PK1 root.
Once i know this can be achieved, I bought WiFi Router (root) and anticipate this will work, and or xtether for an unrestricted Hotspot activation around Tmobiles latest low blow.
We got the S7 and I regret everything about it. I had 2 Note 4's in the house running CM 12.1, tethering 600 gigs per month from Tmobile with 40-75megs down like it was nothing. I want to dump these and get a OnePlus or go back to a Note 4. Just something without a BL lock, pretty much have to go international or something like OnePlus.

pdanet is not the prog that provisions hotspot. If you install PDAnet+ like you state, then you know it installs another prog called FoxFi.
This has hotspot. Tmobile has done something new on their end in the last 2 weeks to throttle this to .5kbps, unless you pay $26 extra for unlimited hotspot.
This program previously worked great and doesnt require root. I could get unlimited Hotspot, and highspeed. Now, they &*@k#D us.
Are you claiming to not pay the additional $26, and still get unthrottled speeds (15-50 mbs)?
Im sorry for asking you again, since my post is looking for a workaround, not what doesn't work any longer. I can see many others with the same observations re foxfi (pdna.net), hence - never even mentioning this. Sorry for my tone, as I hope to improve my situation, and want others too as well, and do not want others to try methods known not to currently work, until and if, Foxfi updates...

To your situation I live in Puerto Rico and have T-Mobile here.
I have only 5GB of Mobile hotspot and has not consumed it yet.
I know what Foxfi is but if you know that if you install PDANet+ if you want full version you need to buy the FoxFi key that works for FoxFi and PDANet.
Here's what I have cosumed with FoxFi and before I buyed the Key I was using my regular hotspot which consumed almost 2GB of my plan.
I dont use usbtethering and only need PDANet for my PS4.
Plus I have legally buyed the FoxFi key, I'm not using any cracked software. Sorry but if for you doesnt work then is your country thats blocking the tethering there.
thanks for your response.
I guess i should have been clear - it is for US domestic T-mobile and Unlimited One plans. You are using a 5gig plan, your situation doesnt apply - it works. Same as the pay as you go plans in continental US.
The issue is for those of us on the UNLIMITED ONE plan that are now being throttled (90+ percent of us) Foxfi has been crippled and works no different than native hotspot.
Root will solve this, but I'm not confident in the root stability with what I have already experienced and further experimentation is a waste of my time. I hope experts in our community have got solutions that actually work....????
thanks for anyone's help in advance...
I wanted to report that I went back to PIA firmware, rooted and using WIfi Tether Router by Fabio (root) ($2.80) for my hotspot to get around the Tmobile throttling.
I'm using PIA VPN connected on the phone.
**In order to get VPN and WiFi tether router to work
using Wifi Tether router, you must create a new access point name, copying the tmobile settings in place, and changing the APN protocol to from IPv6 to IPv4
then save and select this new APN name as default in your phones mobile network settings.
Reboot the phone. I went from .5kbs ---> 20-50mbs.
Wifi Tether router runs slow, and hot - so this isn't as easy as using PDA.net (FoxFi) without root like before - but seems to work fine. Now, you must root to get the unlimited wifi hotspot. (For Tmobile Unlimited One accounts).
In beginning it didn't work until i made the above changes, and followed the configuration page:
for GS5/6 , but not sure this made any difference, so recommend not making any changes, until doing above.
I'm still testing the stability of root, in general, for the S7. Since my PK1 upgrade experience bad, I will stick with PIA until someone posts results with experience.
Thanks to some advice I used v15 fixes after root, and NOT the bloatware removal which might have been the culprit all along.
So are there any other new phones from t mobile that currently have successful workarounds for this?
I have the T-Mobile one plan and everything is unlimited.
re: the One plan "unlimited" is a marketing ploy. The previous marketing game is called Binge. Again market to the user they are getting more, when in fact they are getting far less.
if you read the fine print you will see that unlimited = not unlimited.
plus you cannot wifi tether anymore, since they added the $26/mo premium hotspot feature. Then your unlimited to 28gigs or whatever they specify has their unlimited limit which keeps changing - also in the fine print until they start to throttle you down, as the network priority demands (ie you become lower priority if connected to a busy tower).
The OP explains how to circumvent the hotspot restrictions. T-mobile's one plan (circa Sept 1 2016), has already been changed 3 times in 3 months. Not sure how you keep customers like this.
First we had UNLIMITED. Then it was clarified to unlimited upto 28 or so gigs or whatever the top 2% of their users use. The hotspot was restricted to 15 gigs per month, and specified to be a lower network priority. In my case the hotspot was full speed. Then, they changed the policy again. No hotspot. it works throttled to .5kbs.
The brilliance in the tmobile marketing is to advertise that they are giving more, when in fact they are giving less. Amazing that users think they have unlimited data, when they dont, and obviously are not hitting the upper limits to find out. Yes, you have unlimited .5kbs when you hit the limits, and in this sense, you are unlimited which is not so bad in itself, but good luck with HD videos on your 72" 5000k display
I do want to point out that when I went over the limit my speed was unaffected, but don't want an account where I'm wondering what will be the story tomorrow.
I came from a sprint unlimited account I had for 12 years. Nothing changed. Unlimited was unlimited, but was very slow. T-mobile seems much faster - but unreliable, and inconsistent.
Hotspot fix for no tether hotspot plan.
Are you guys talking about bypassing tether limit or having tethering on a tmobile plan that has no tether at all? I have old plan that has unlimited no throttle but also no hotspot tether at all and want to know what phone has roms that would give me tether. I have now s7, had v20 rooted but nothing worked for tether kept getting hotspot up sell page with WiFi tether and foxfire.

28 GBs is the soft cap. I have the truly unlimited plan (grandfathered) and I get soft capped at 22 GBs, but my app says it's unlimited.
Back when I had my 5 GB plan, the old app said unlimited too. Then I hit 5 GBs and realized they meant unlimited throttled 2G data and I had to dig through the app before stumbling upon "X/5 GBs of high speed data".
Also video streaming is limited to 480p but you already probably knew that, so yes, technically unlimited data but not really IMO.
