[Q] Free wifi hotspot gone

Since the latest Tmobile ota update my wifi hot spot feature gives me a Tmobile message on my linked device saying i need to pay for this service. Previously, i got around this by creating a new APN of epc.tmobile.com, this no longer works. Suggestions?

Try open garden, the one that looks like a tree, you'll need it on both devices and it creates a mesh network, some caviets are apps tha use data wont work, so you have to do everything through your web browser. This solution also solves the screen off issue while tethering.

As of right now this has been removed or blocked in the newest update.
There is nothing yet been found to allow you to set your own APN again.
You can use wifi tethering with FoxFi as a workaround from foxfi.com/bin but for data to work over wifi tethering you will need to keep the screen on.
That is about the only workaround.

Or use open garden and it makes a mesh network, data still flows with screen off, you'll need open garden on both devices. The only issue is apps that use data like the play store will say your not connected, but anything you want to do with the browser you can.
I know not perfect but thats the closest we have right now, besides keeping the screen on.

Changing the UA(user-agent) is just one of the few obstacles to overcome. The main problem is the tmo OTA update now prevents/locks us from entering the APN needed to bypass/trick the t-mobile tethering check.

We already do pay for it with our monthly contracts, we are allowed x amount of data per month, we go over it and the speed of data isn't even worth tethering. Do they give us money back on the data we don't use? No they don't, so why can't we use the data we pay for any way we want, it's not like data for a tablet costs more or anything like that, it's just greed on the providers end plain and simple.

I just ended up talking to an agent about my bill and I brought up the fact that I couldn't tether anymore, so they put that back on free of charge. I mean hell I'm already paying a decent amount monthly and I have the 5 gig package (which used to be advertised with transforming your device to a hotspot), there is no reason to ask for more other than greed?

I also have a 5 gig plan and the hotspot is supposed to be free, but my 5 gig plan is old and the only way for me to get the hotspot is for me to give up unlimited messaging, which I then would have to pay $15 a month for, umm, yeah, they got me coming and going. BLAH

I work for tmo, and we do give it for free with the 5 & 10gb plans.
Second, I've noticed that it works with Firefox, but no other browser when tethering to a PC/Mac. I haven't edited my APN.

If you're on unlimited, it's unreasonable to ask for wifi tethering. That's like going to a "all you can eat" restaurant, and then bringing a truck to load with food.

Lol, exactly. That's why there's home internet providers. And if you really just want to use your phone, then just get a 10gb plan that has the free hotspot. You're paying for the investment in network upgrades, your paying the engineers salary to produce a network that's very good.
And of course, the CEO's bonus checks lol

Using other roms i can tether temporarally. Well, i get a push message to stop asap or risk losing access. (Im on that unlimited plan.) so i stop. It does work though tethering to my nexus 7, im assuming because it shows it being a mobile device vs. desktop.
The default rom pushes all tethering through pcweb.tmobile.com which depending on your rate plan, determines if you get tether access. custom roms shouldn't have this setup.

I also have a Nexus 7 and the unlimited plan. I'm rooted on the S1 (no ROMs loaded yet) and am now trying to figure out where to go from here.

You can try a new APN. Menu->Settings->More->Mobile Networks->APN or Access Point Names->Menu->New APN
Name it whatever you want and set the APN to epc.tmobile.com. this should bypass tmobile's tethering block.
Also, I've noticed that even if rooted, a desktop using ie, safari or chrome still gets blocked, but Firefox does not.

Best choice is this one WIFI Tether Router is paid app which is up to you how to get it, in my case i paid for it and works perfectly well. if you get it send me a PM and i'll give you the Setting to use with Metro, i use Tmobile but settings are the same as far as i know.

Ive been trying to get this app to work for days. Ive contacted the app developer for help. He says he doesnt know whats wrong. I have root. The hotspot successfully starts and i can use it..... For about 3 minutes then the wifi turns itself on and back off. Stopping the hotspot from broadcasting. I have the sprint variant of thelg g stylo rooted.

Are you sure you unchecked the option to let apps scan for wifi networks even when wifi is off?
Just did a speedtest on this with the Boost Varient got 1.06 Mb/s download and 0.39 Mb/s upload.
Nothing to scream at, but It lets me tether on boost which is great especially once I have 7GB of data

I've used pdanet for many years which includes usb and wifi tether. I regularly use 500+gb a month without being throttled. The program hides tether usage 100% but doesn't hide overall usage so i recommend the $60 plan. Its available in the playstore or from the developers website @ junefabrics.

Can I use pdanet, my phone is not rooted. Is it going to count towards my mobile hotspot data, I get 6 gigs of hotspot on my metropcs $60 plan.

I went through hours of research, tried to use adb she'll to change tether dun required to 0, changed to ipv4, added dun In apn settings, went through a VPN and NOTHING Works. I'm about to go back to 5.0.1 to get unthrottled Hotspot, after my 5 gb it goes down to 100kb or less I'm sick of it. I don't know how else to get full unthrottled Hotspot. Maybe the custom rom will get me around the Hotspot throttling and I feel as if I'm throttled on data even though I'm on the unlimited plan on metro, maybe the custom rom will get me around that too. Either way any advice? Thanks in advance

Boost is throttling your data from their servers not your phone itself. You hit the 5gigs or whatever you plan is, and you're gonna get throttled

I'm on metro pcs, and I understand the throttling after 5gbs is there going or is no way of getting around it? I never had this issue with my LG f6

If I use the custom rom will my tethering still be throttled after 5gbs?

which ver. of android does it have? i know for LP is not easy to get pass the provision you should check for LP Tether hack or like i said before Wifi Tether Router does a good job with Unlimited tethering well does for me.

I have tether router, I'm on 5.1 I tried changing provisions, I just tried x tether on xposed which is supposed to auto fix all the checks it still doesn't work. Maybe I need to wait till metro resets my tether after I pay my bill again for it to work unlimited?

you have this Wifi Tether Router App and data still count off Hotspot? which settings you have?

Wpa2, channel 1, interface wlan 0, method hostapd apd tried android 4.2 or higher but have the same speed, drivers 802.11, wifi mode G, host apd unchecked. What am I doing wrong, since you have unlimited bandwidth on your tether? I get good mbs until i reach my tether 5mb threshold then they turn me to 125kb

Pdanet works perfectly. just create a new access point and make it identical to the metro one expect change the apn protocol to ipv4. Pdanet works with or without root and with custom roms. It hides all tether usage usb and wifi 100% but whatever data is used will count towards your total allotment if not on the $60 unlimited plan. If you use usb tethering select hide tether usage level 1. Dont enable the tether or hotspot options from your phones settings do everything through pdanet.
I regularly use well over 500gb a month between usb and wifi and have never been throttled or warned etc. Ive used pdanet since 2006 through sprint,boost,att and metro using about every phone you could imagine and it always worked flawlessly.

FoxFi will it work?

I depend on FoxFi to share my unlimited data. Will FoxFi work on the S7 if so I wonder if it will work in the Verizon version?

Yes it does work. I'm using my s7 now from Verizon. So happy to get it already. I still have the unlimited data as well so this function is very nice to have.

How do you still have unlimited data? Are you making payments on s7 or did you do 2 year deal?

I'm making payments on the s7. I been paying month to month for years now. When Verizon upped the price for unlimited from 30 to 50 they allowed the unlimited users to be able to do payment plans to allow us to upgrade without getting rid of unlimited. There is no renewal of contract when doing a payment plan on a new device

Verizon never increased my unlimited data to $50. I'm afraid to upgrade my phone and tip them off.

Apparently it can be done, as long as you have more than one line on your plan and the additional line(s) do not have unlimited. The guys at Costco did it for me this weekend I have a new 2 year contract and was able to keep my $50 unlimited data plan on my line.
I am now an S7 user. It's a change from HTC, but so far it's good... Waiting for a while before rooting, though, for hardware failure concerns. I'm on day 2 and already had to swap out a defective s7. Power button would not work at all.
ETA: Back on Topic: Installed FoxFi (paid version) plus the FoxFi add-on, and I am tethering with no issues on Verizon. Tested with http, ftp and VNC. All working quite well. You do need to do a two-step process to turn it on, however. Enable FoxFi, then it will tell you to turn on Mobile Hotspot. FoxFi walks you through this just fine and loads the Mobile Hotspot app for you when enabling. When turning off the FoxFi Hotspot, if you had WiFi enabled prior to activating the FoxFi Hotspot, your phone will complain and ask to do it for you if you. If you did not have WiFi enabled prior to launching FoxFi hotspot, your phone will not complain, so you will need to remember to turn off the mobile hotspot yourself after turning off FoxFi Hotspot.
ETA2: Turning off the hotspot by turning off the phone's Mobile Hotspot will be detected by FoxFi and FoxFi will turn itself off. The quick setting toggle button works great for this.

For the S7 on Verizon will I need to set a password on my phone? On the S3 I was able to bypass the password but on the S5 I was not. It didn't work. I don't want this to only to work if I need a.password or a patteen on my phone.

YES, FoxFi works on the Galaxy S7 Edge. Though I don't have my phone yet (arriving Friday), I went into local VZ store, installed FoxFi from my PlayStore account and confirmed it DOES work with no issues. To my knowledge it shouldn't matter what type of account you have (including unlimited, which I have). I believe it is a function of the hardware. This is why I waited to purchase this phone (and confirm FoxFi) rather than the Motorola Turbo, which does not work with FoxFi.

Actually it's not working for me, in the uk on 3 with unlimited data and I got a message telling me I'd used up my hotspot allowance. Really annoying, I'll need to find an alternative now.

Hotspot workaround for Galaxy S8/+/Nougat

I was using Foxfi to Hotspot my Verizon Grandfathered UDP .... I Just got the Galaxy S8+ and found out the hard way that Google(nougat), Samsung and Verizon teamed up to kill Foxfi's Hotspot hack. Until we have an unlocked boatloader. root or another working exploit, Hotspot isnt going to work on the Galaxy S8..The good news is I was able to find a decent workaround with an app called "Net Share-no-root-tethering" from the play store... It uses Wifi-Direct to share your phones data plan.. It does the trick and I'm able to share my data plan with other wireless devices.. I was literally just about to return my S8+ rather than wait weeks or months for the devs to crack the vault.. Hope this helps ease the tetherless pain while we wait for a new exploit ..
Edit: Please note this is not an equal substitute for native Hotspot.. I found the speeds to be much slower, but for basic internet use like checking email, and web surfing the connection was adequate.

Yeah my Galaxy s8 plus also lets me toggle hotspot without telling my that I need to be subscribe. I have unlimited but I never bought the hotspot plan. Would using the hotspot show on my bill?

OP's app is garbage tbh, I get 50+mbps on speed test on the phone but on my computer I can hardly get above 10. Something is being lost in transmission and it isn't the fault of my PC. Is Wifi direct trash or something?
My phone also tells me that I need to "Subscribe" to the Hotspot feature at Verizon but it is already included in my plan, what gives?

I didn't do anything. Just changed the SSid and password. Also I checked my plan online and I don't have hotspot as an added feature.

Not working successfully with my AT&T S8 and my MacBook Pro. I do have EasyTether Pro working great but that requires a usb connection.

Hey Guys, I tried this on my S7 Verizon and it works, you have to check the help option on the app. I had to change my HTTP Proxy and port number on my iPad to connect successfully.

Speeds arent good at all with wifi direct but considering native hotspot doesnt work its all I got for wireless tether.... I cant get USB/ or bluetooth tether to work from phone to another Android tablet..

make sure when u are typing the password that you also select manual proxy and enter 192.168.49.1 and then for port enter 8282

I got this to work without the app.

Hey guys, just got an s8+ today and found out that the native hotspot will work if you pop sim tray out, it will then take you to lock screen, pull down tray and turn on hotspot. You may get an error saying no sim installed but just keep pushing hotspot button until it turns on. It is working on mine now but now I am trying to figure out how I can disable ota updates. Anyone have any help for me? Thanks
