[Q] Unlimited data ?? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So, we've been using Verizon DSL the last 6 years, and as of late it's speed has dropped considerably to the point of being reminded of what dialup is...with that said, can I take my current plan (unlimited minutes, text and data) and drop to the lowest minutes/text/but keep unlimited LTE...and from there, open another line of service with say 6gb along with minutes and text?
From there I would port my old number from the unlimited LTE account to the new line of service....then take the sim from the unlimited LTE and use it in a MiFi?
God I hope this makes sense.
So to recap, open a new line, drop minutes to a minimum on old unlimited LTE plan, swap numbers....use the unlimited LTE line as a MiFi with voice minutes that will never be used...and use the new line as my "new" "phone" line....
Thank god for any help....I think I got it down...
Chris

oh and this is all because I refuse to do business with Time Warner! Which other than Verizon DSL is the only provider available (FiOS is only blocks away...but it's blocks away)!

Your probably better off calling Verizon and asking them.we make think something and they'll say the opposite

Just call your dsl provider and report trouble on your dsl line so a technician can fix it.

Why not just use hotspot and save a ton of money?

No it won't work. The unlimited data feature for phones and the internet feature used for mifis is different. If you put that sim in either the mifi won't activate or you'll be switched to the default 5gb plan for mifis. It would be nice if it was that easy.

Now if you just bought a 4g phone and dedicated to using it as a hotspot that would definitely work. You can kiss your number goodbye though. There's no way to port your number to another line of Verizon service. You could change your number but that would only permanently erase your previous line not make it so you could port it.

And the only way to "port" your number to another account would be through assumption of liability which would mean the account would have to be in someone else's name. Your unlimited data feature is tied to that line and and the number that is currently on it. Sorry for all the edits. I just re read your post and wanted to make sure I covered all your bases.

While I'm sure that's the official line that Verizon employees have been told, that is not what has been publicly stated by Verizon (see phonenews.com/verizon-affirms-unlimited-smartphone-sim-card-usage-in-hotspots-tablets-lte-ipad-20053/). I can confirm that I have been able to switch my 4G sim card into the Samsung 4G hotspot sold (or previously sold) by Verizon without any data cap.
My plan did not change, the device automatically provisioned, and I was able to easily return to my previously used phone. I've done this over the course of the past year a dozen times (at least) and have even received troubleshooting from Verizon with the hotspot activated on the account.

"Free Wifi Hack"

Hey Guys
Noob question. I have noticed in some roms people have installed "free wifi hack". What is this?

Your probobly thinking of free wifi tethering.
How does that work? Sorry I'm a noob at this.

Oh, and I just noticed you're on Rogers. I think they don't disable tethering/hotspot anyway.
On Rogers you can tether by wifi, usb, or even BT... It's your cellular data and you can use it with whichever device you wish. We had a bad storm here several months ago and my internet was down for a couple of days so I just popped on the wifi hotspot on my phone (SGS at the time) and it was fine (well slow because it was just HSPA+). I've since upgraded to the SGSII LTE, and got my daughter an Experia Arc and they both tether or supply a hotspot just fine.
Jamie
I guess in the states they like to block tethering due to the unlimited data plans. In Canada we don't have unlimited plans so the carriers couldn't care less if we tether.

Are you certain??? I am on an LTE plan with Rogers too and I tethered my laptop this morning (since I was lucky enough to get somebody else to drive today)... I was able to log into work and answer all the most urgent e-mails and cancel the meetings that I don't feel like having on the first day back after our break before ever getting to my desk.

Developers paying for data.. Check it out

That's good for the consumers, but really bad for the devs. I don't want to be paying some user's data bill.
It's just an entry tactic to at$t making up data plans like "2gb data plus unlimited Facebook access" and charging more because it has "unlimited" access to Facebook or maybe even at$t content sites.
The future; you've been warned.

They will get away with it because it will only be a option if the Dev wants to add that feature. Think of it as a 1-800 number. You don't pay to call them, they accept the charges. Why a dev would accept the charges I don't know since I doubt it will generate more use of there app

This is probably the worst alternative to actually upgrading their network.
Man, once tmobile gets LTE, they will lose a lot of people.

Doubt it. Outside of their cheap plans, nothing about t-mobile
appeals to me. Only other network I would consider switching to
is verizon's.
The good the bad the ugly
Note: I'm only guessing at most of this based off my interaction with AT&T's employees and representatives. I will edit my post if/when I am able to ask the reps more about it and have a more in depth knowledge of what this means.
Good: Limited data plans will still allow access to certain apps (Netflix, Facebook,ect...) once your data cap is up.
Bad: Developers and those that opt in to this might hike up the cost of service or even create a whole different type of billing package just for phones (Netflix for example, watch unlimited movies on your computer or tv for $7.99 a month and if you want unlimited streaming to your smartphone or 3G tablet its an extra $3.99 or something)
Ugly: The initial use of the data will still factor into your capped gigs so that "unlimited streaming type plan" is only covered after you reach your cap. This means that once you hit those 2/3gig caps then you can only access the apps that the developer pays for your extra data. EX: You get a text from att "You have reached your limit for data this month if you use any more then you will be charged $10 per gig" I use Netflix no charge. I use Facebook (assuming they will be on board with this) I click an ad in the facebook app BOOM $10 on my bill.
Again this is all speculation and I am only guessing and will add/edit the post if/when I find out more about this. I'm sure that once the details are figured out this will actually be a good thing at least for a short while for AT&T users and we might actually see other carriers with Tiered data plans following suit.

Honestly I do have to say when I was with T-Mobile even though I was running mostly edge for internet and very frustrated with that, they usually had some of the most bad ass line up's of phones. With the whole AT&T-Mobile deal some of the greater phones went to other carriers but I think that with them launching LTE and everything they might make a comeback with some of the greatest phones on the market. I know our skyrocket has pretty much the same specs as their SGSII and that was one thing I was almost bitter about because I wanted the best phone I could possibly have and they had it before AT&T and Verizon is so restrictive that even the Galaxy Nexus was delayed for release (one thing that I might add has never happened to either of the two Nexi launched on T-Mobile) because they had to work out the whole Google wallet and a few other things to get the thing up and running on their network.

Transfer Upgrade option gone

I logged into my account a few days ago and was poking around and saw that my transfer upgrade button is gone! I am happy with my S3 but thought I might try the S4 but definitely not going to lose my unlimited plan. I did a quick chat with a representative and they said the option is still available and they weren't sure why it was gone from my online account. I will go to a store and see them if I do decide to try the S4. Has anyone else noticed this? I have 4 phones and 2 are eligible for upgrades 3 that have unlimited data so I was using the one that didn't for my upgrades. Thanks!
Does this apply to you?

I have used a transfer once and bought a phone off CL once to save my unlimited. I will go back to the V store and see if the gentleman who helped me last time is still there. Thanks!

Hi guys! First post, I use to be a Verizon employee. I was in the same situation with the transfer upgrade option disappearing on me. I noticed that it was because all my lines qualified for upgrades so there was "no need" to transfer an upgrade from one line to another (other than the fact there is a known loophole to keep unlimited data)
What is this loophole you speak of. In due for a upgrade in December and I want to keep my unlimited.

Transfer the upgrade to a line that you don't care about unlimited data, upgrade that line, get new phone in mail, activate onto that line, then do a device switch to your unlimited data line.

Transfer the upgrade from your unlimited line to ANY line that DOES NOT have unlimited data. Once you get the phone, activate the phone first on the line that doesn't have unlimited data, then switch it back afterwards.
I spoke with a few co workers, they told me this does not work anymore, however you can still upgrade the line that doesn't have unlimited data and switch the phone over. They said the transferring upgrade loophole doesn't work anymore.

Yes they can. Once you're out of contract they can do whatever. There's nothing binding them from changing stuff. They won't for a while but they definitely have the ability to if they want to.

I agree that I wouldn't put it past them, they changed our commission structure at least 4 times since I've worked there. But, I've had customers with plans so old that our phones no longer support. Look up "digital choice" plans if u are interested. Anyways, Verizon forced them to changed to the newer plans when they upgraded to any phone, which is almost the same situation here.

Hi All
Just my 2cent.
Loopholes on VZW to keep your Unlimited Data plan.
i just activate 2 S4 onto 2 of my lines with Unlimited Data by doing upgrade on 2 diff line under the same acct. By the way, before the switch over o the S4, both line are under iphone4 which Unlimited Data on 3G and after the switch is it under Unlimited Data for 4G.
Just order a new phone under limited data line and activated for 24 hours. After 24hrs call up VZW customer service and have them switch the phone to the Unlimited Data line. Yes, its doable and VZW can't do much to it.
I just have them switch over couples day ago.
Just my 2cent,...

Almost there. You need to temporarily convert the dumb phone line to data, do the upgrade/switch upgrade, then transfer the new phone to your line, then degrade the dumb phone line back to a basic line. Do this within 15 minutes (or some number like that) and you will be fine. Ask me how I know?

[Q] Question about moving Sim Cards and Carriers W/ N5

Right now i have my N5 up and running on AT&T'S Mobile share 4gb plan. Works awesome, But im looking at over $100/ Month. My question is this, I purchased a T mobile Sim starter Kit and i was thinking to try the $70 Unlimited plan, But my biggest concern is speed and coverage.
What would happen if i took my att sim out of my n5, Then set up t mobiles sim and plan on the N5 and tried it out and it doesn't work (Coverage isn't good). Does this cancel my att plan and what not? Can i simply put my att sim back in and go on with what i had before?
Thanks in advance!

You have the freedom to swap Sim cards at will. Taking your Sim out doesn't cancel your service.

Only way to cancel your service is if you either call in and cancel the line or port out your number.

If i like T Mobiles service and want to stick with it, Can i port my # from att even tho i set up a new # with T Mobile?
Changing Sim cards doesn't affect you service at all. I use google voice as my primary number, so I change Sim cards all the time. That means that I never have to port my number anywhere.
Although AT&T usually has better coverage, T-Mobile generally has better non-LTE speeds. This is a valuable fact to look at, especially when you realize that LTE consumes more battery power. That and the fact that T-Mobile has a much bigger data allowance (unlimited), means that I tend to switch to them several times a year.
One advantage you'll get from using the carriers, and not their MVNOs, is that you automatically get their data APN settings.
Go to settings/wireless and networks/mobile networks/ access point names , and check that you are using the proper APN.
Also, you may have mobile data turned off.
PS, the roaming agreement may not include data roaming, as that costs companies the most money, so you shouldn't assume that you will depend on ATT roaming.
The case will work perfectly on my white 16gb nexus 5. I actually had one in my amazon shopping cart

Porting number to aio from st

So I've had st since n5 release and I'm fed up and switching.
Anyway during the aio checkout. I entered my account number and pin and last four of social. And they billed me and its processing.
Now.. I hear nightmares of people having to call st to authorize a port. Which sounds like a major pain.
Will aio still ship my stuff to me and I can figure out the port and stuff when I'm trying to activate my new service and sim?
Or do you think they'll reject my order?... And refund me :/
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Are you switching from an AT&T Sim on net10 to AIO? I ask because ports only work when your actually switching carriers for instance T-Mobile ST to AIO.
Otherwise AT&T has to handle it internally which can be a real mess.
Switching mvno but staying with the same carrier can be a really pita.
Otherwise it should be fine, I switch and port quite often.
It should be noted that if your frustration with ST is Latency and data issues your unlikely to be happier with AIO. they actually throttle the data about the same , latency is the same and they also limit your maximum speed. If you want better latency on prepaid AT&T you pretty much have to go to go phone.
