AT&T Clarifies Its Policy On Data Throttling, Allows 5GB Of Unaltered Data Flow For L
With mobile data usage continuing to skyrocket and the availability of spectrum scarce, AT&T, like other wireless companies, manages its network in the most fair way possible so that we can provide the best possible mobile broadband experience for all our customers.
How we’re managing the network only affects a small minority of the heaviest smartphone data users still on unlimited plans. Put another way, this does not impact more than 95 percent of our smartphone customers.
Our unlimited plan customers have told us they want more clarity around how the program works and what they can expect. Here’s what customers need to know:
Customers with a 3G or 4G smartphone – who also still have our unlimited data plan – will see speeds reduced if they use 3GB (gigabytes) of data or more in a billing cycle. Speeds will return to normal at the start of the next billing cycle. For context, less than 5 percent of smartphone customers use more than 3GB per month.
For customers with a 4G LTE smartphone – who also still have our unlimited data plan – data speeds will be reduced if usage is 5GB (gigabytes) or more in a billing cycle. Speeds will return to normal at the start of the next billing cycle

Customers will get a text message from us before experiencing a change in speed.
Even with reduced data speeds, these customers will still be able to email and surf the web, and continue to use an unlimited amount of data each month.
Not impacted by this program, launched last year, are customers on our tiered data plans.
The reason reduced speeds only apply to unlimited smartphone customers is because their data usage is significantly higher than those on tiered plans. For example, in January, the top 5 percent of our unlimited data plan customers used an average of over 50 percent more data than the top 5 percent of customers on tiered plans.
Because spectrum is limited and data usage continues to soar, we manage our network this way to be as fair as possible and so we can provide the best possible mobile broadband experience to everyone.
We encourage all of our customers to use Wi-Fi whenever possible – especially when watching video, which is the most data-intensive activity.
That’s because data activity over Wi-Fi does not count against the threshold for unlimited customers that triggers reduced data speeds or against customers’ tiered data plans. Customers can find out more at www.att.com/datainfo

But some people were getting throttled even when they didn't go over 3gb. I believe they shouldn't throttle for the whole billing cycle. Only when someone is abusing it when there's a lot of traffic in the network, and restore it after that period. But that would probably require a lot of work. I dunno just my opinion.
Never been throttled, I don't use a lot of data.

Did you read it?? That all just changed.
Well.. That sucks. Only one month did I use 6 gigs. Typically don't use over 1 though. Meh. Let the angry comments come in. I'd be pissed if there wasn't wifi at my house, and I lived in good cell reception, and depended on it. ATT.. You're full of crap.
Atleast LTE users get a break. I'll get an LTE phone next time around the block.

It's still bull. I bought my phone because AT&T said that I was buying a 4G phone and said I was told how fast it was.
They put YouTube, a web browser, an email app and a text messaging app, just to name a few, on my phone.

You're still getting unlimited data. When you signed up, did the contract guarantee you unlimited data at speeds greater than or equal to XXmb/s, or just unlimited data?

Maybe a better way to "CLARIFY" is to change the Plan name from UNlimited to " LIMITED "
That would clear it all up would'nt it?

Hmm.. Didn't sign a contract. Though I did feel the need for an iPhone 2g for a few hours.. While I had my infuse and somehow almost used up my whole 2 gigs in 2 days. Something went funky with ATT servers.. Or the infuse. Lol.

No. Lol. There's a flaw where if you had the original iphone then you could set it up in iTunes and get unlimited data.
In two days, at the beginning of a cycle, when I was on my 2 gig planned (had just got the phone a month or two before..) It decided to go through the roof with my usage. 2 gigs. 2 days...

Because this month I got throttled at 2040mb ... which is... roughly.. 2GB.. right.
I think 5GB sounds fair for an "unlimited" (limited) plan.
I would never go over that!... 3GB... I hover around that every month for sure.

So you do have a service agreement. A contract. I can guarantee that if you've gotten a subsidized phone from them since your iPhone that you either signed or clicked through a new contract binding you to updated agreements but keeping your unlimited plan.

Probably when I finished setting it up in iTunes, it sealed the dev. Idk. Whatever. My contract expires next year. ill have this phone for a while, and keep the plan. And then onto the next phone..

Here's the deal. Less than 5% of AT&T users have unlimited data. They want the unlimited people gone. They are trying to monetize power-users while managing bandwidth (which is a finite resource) to keep the average users happy. If you had a business and had to choose between keeping 5% of your customers happy, or 95% of your customers happy... you would make the same choice. These decisions aren't about the users today... it's about 2015 when the average smartphone user will use alot more data... and there will be more smartphone users.... etc, etc.
Not saying I condone these decisions... but after all they are a business. They have a finite resource (bandwidth) and have to make as much profit as possible with that finite resource. Bandwidth doesn't grow on trees, and neither does money. End of story.

ATT mobile share plans became available today. THey are awesome for people who use smartphones. They feature unlimited talk and text including landlines domestically. Price is based on the amount of data you want to share between your devices. Also the best feature is they all allow tethering or hotspot service! THese plans are nice check them out:

yep! I've been itching for today to come. I just switched my wife over and we'll be saving around $25/month.

Just switched over. Will save a few bucks plus meaning I'm no longer a tethering outlaw.

Particularly sweet if you want to add a tablet. A tablet is only an additional $10/month.

I did it for the unlimited talk, Even with rollover sometimes not enough, I dont own a home phone so our cells are our life lines!

I think they are intended for families with multiple smartphones who have already tried to combine things like texting. They probably don't make sense if it's just you and a spouse who are not using that much call time and data.
For me, it shaved about $10 off our bill, more if you count the added tethering (which I was pirating but my wife did not have since I never jailbroke her iphone).
I'm giving up two unlimited data plans, but my wife uses 500MB a month at most, so this really bumps me from 5GB "unlimited" to 6GB. Since I've never gone over 5 anyway, it's a wash.

I use a good amount of data (~4GB/month myself), but they don't really make sense if you don't use a lot of minutes.

Does anybody know how this works with a corporate discount. I'm still on the $25 2gb indoviaul plan because that's the only one that gets a corporate discount.

I have 5 phones on my plan - 2 with data (one old unlimited plan, one 3GB plan), 3 without - 700 minutes w/free mobile to mobile (who really talks on their phones anway...ha!), unlimited text and no tethering. It cost $38 per phone right now. If I were to move to a similar setup with Shared data I'd be paying $50 per phone. It would be nice to not be a "tethering outlaw" but not for that price. If the "feature" phones didn't cost so much to add, especially if they are not using data, then it would be worth it for me. To those who it benefits - enjoy!

I'll have to find the link, but ATT said that FAN discount was applied to the data dollar amount (not the individual smart phone amounts (e.g. $35, $40))

Yeah, I think its really for families with multiple smartphones. In particular, seems to really benefit you if data use by some family members is higher than others; and if you do a lot of texting and calls. Adding a tablet, if you already have a smartphone plans also looks to be a great deal.

I thought so too. My bill always says "XX% discount on service applied" or something like that. Wasn't aware some plans were excluded, if that is the case.

I'm glad that this new plan saves some people money. Would have ended up costing my family more,as we are heavy data users.

I use a lot of data also fortunately all the places I go or am at 90% of the day have WiFi, don't see streaming music or watching movies on my phone all day on anything but WiFi anyway. I look at the data limit as a supplement to the WiFi when I'm not in a WiFi area, to solely use mobile data would cost me a fortune.

It's a sad thing though, if you have grandfathered unlimited and want to switch to mobile share, you'll loose it. Being that t-mo is bringing their unlimited data back, I'd say att should resurface soon with it.
Besides it's a catch 22, it's good to keep your grandfathered plan, but if it works better for family users I say it's somewhat honest of a deal

yeah, don't use it for watching movies and as a hotspot for your entire house. There were a few methods used before, but I can't remember them and I don't think I can speak about it anyway as you did sign a contract that limits your data to 5gb. I'm on it too and unless I go crazy with movies I don't get close. Sorry.

Are you on T-Mobile? They recently added a new data plan that is unlimited, unrestricted data use even past 5 GB. For me, it was the same exact price that I was already paying. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure it's the same price as the previous 5 GB plan.

I'm a family plan and didn't have to pay extra for it. I assumed it would be the same for anyone also already on a 5 GB plan.

I'm on 5 gb plan bit not enough since I mostly watch youtube and Netflix. Doesn't make sense to have 4g and surf web only

I had a 5gb limit on a family plan and I upgraded to their truly unlimited plan and I saved money. (five dollars to be exact)

You are looking at the classic plan. As I said look for the Value plan. Otherwise there is no other way of getting unlimited internet.

Wrong, look at the list.
There is a 200mb option then a 2gig option and then last an unlimited plan which is nearly 1TB.

There is a 69.99 unlimited everything but there is probably a catch lile for new user only with 2 yrs. Agreement

Nope, It does require a 2 year contract but it's not for just new users. It's not a limited time plan or anything.

I'd go into a store and see if you can strong arm them into giving you the plan. They hate losing customers since their only advantage is being cheaper, nicer and more open to a range of devices.

That's a lot of advantages lol. I recently switched to Simple Mobile and the speeds are the exact same, signal is the same (uses T-Mobile towers) and I hardly use my phone's data to watch much youtube since there's usually wifi somewhere, including my house. Whoever watches Netflix on their phone via your data connection... you'rs just asking to get capped.

Are you always traveling? Try to use WiFi.

The unlimited data plan tmobile just introduced includes a proxy redirect if you try to tether your phone to another device. If you're blowing through your 5gb cap because all you do is watch youtube and netflix on tmobile, you have two options...choose to loose the ability to tether, and maybe pay a little more.

That's not true. There's a fairly well-known loophole of using alternate upgrades to keep unlimited data and extend your contract. I've successfully done it three times now. The last time was in April when I got my M8. I have unlimited data and my contract expiration date is 04/07/2016. :good:

Technically, according to the conditions of the list, we should be fine. One of the conditions is "Have fulfilled their minimum contract term". This is Big Red we're talking about here, though, so you never know. I hope T-Mobile steps up their coverage game in my area soon. I'm sure they will welcome me with open arms when Big Red forces me to get rid of my old voice plan and unlimited data.

I was hoping tmobile picks up where I am.. I'd jump in a heart beat.

Switch to T-Mobile
I'm switching to T-Mobile soon - I tether a lot so having unlimited is nice and there is more development for T-Mobile/AT&T editions. I would get throttled with unlimited on both networks so why not pay less?

Better reception more reliable network... More coverage. For me I travel so its nice to know I have data and my kids are able to tether for games and videos. Just my 2¢ often worth less to others lol.

The OP left out one important little detail: Only the top 5% of data hogs get throttled. Those that use more than 4.7GB/month.
I'm ok with that.

I assume by "everything" they literally mean, everything--calls, WiFi, 4G--or does the 4G only apply to "refarmed" areas? I already have S-OFF via Firewater so I'd assume the tough part's done...

No such thing as a data hog, data WANTS to be transferred, that is the whole point of a network. If Verizon's network can't handle the network demands of their customers, they should upgrade their network, not throttle their customers. They make billions of dollars for pete's sake.
I travel 50% of the year for work, and hotel "high-speed" internet is rarely fast enough for VPN, screen sharing, downloading ISOs, etc. My phone is the only way I can get enough bandwidth on the road to do my job, and I can easily use 50-70GB/month. I do not consider this to be outlandish - files get bigger every day, data demands grow every day, and network speed and capacity must keep up with this trend. Land-line ISPs have no problem with this, Verizon is just greedy.

I use about the same 50 to 70 gigs a month. But I've upgraded so I'll be fine. I also live in the booneys, but we got 4g last year and I haven't noticed any throttling here. Good luck to others!

What do you mean by "but I've upgraded so I'll be fine"? I would love a new phone (currently on HTC Rezound) but refuse to give up unlimited data, even if it means buying a G3 or One M8 for full price.

I just bought the M8 on contract during their mother's day promo and kept my unlimited data. Just transfer your plan from your old phone (2 year contract fulfilled) to the new one.
Unfortunately you cannot rely on what the sals reps tell you. They told me I had to give up mu unlimited data, but I would get 5 GB/month instead of the standard 2 GB. After they'd done the switch I was still unlimited....

Yeah have multiple lines. Just transfered my upgrade, used it and my contract is resumed for another 2 years.

That's not very much data at all. I have a 10GB plan, and I routinely use almost all of it.

Come on guys you know it's not really throttling, it's "Network Maintenance". Some attorney got big bucks for coming up with that attempt to fool all the VZW subscribers.

How Much Data Bandwidth Do You Use In A Month?

I never realized how much Sprint was throttling my unlimited data plan. I always thought it was just crappy service from Sprint. Since the government fined AT&T, Sprint and I think T-Mobile stopped the practice.
This month I used 33.57GB /Unlimited. How much did you use?

I use around 18 on average. Sprint is suppose to throttle after 23gb.

Thanks for the article. Base on that they apparently cannot/will not throttle me as I updated my phone before today and I am on an "old" unlimited plan AND I don't foresee any need to upgrade my Galaxy Note 5 in two years!
I guess I will not be getting a Christmas card from Sprint anytime soon.

Am I the only one that find Saw's statement ridiculous? You sell me an unlimited data plan and now you are complaining when I use it! What part of Unlimited am I missing????

what's sad is that you got a lot of corporate white knights here and in lotsa forums that defend this kinda bull. i'm not really a heavy user and spread my data b/t my verizon and sprint phones, but i'm mostly on wifi. if you sell unlimited then screw a limit.
right now 23GB is plenty for me, but I don't see why anyone else who's paid for unlimited shouldn't be able to use it with no limits - it's what they sold and what we pay for!

While I agree it sucks but it's still unlimited data. It's just slower after you consume a certain amount.

I use my unlimited to tether to my other devices in the vehicle while traveling (I'm typically the one driving), around 6-8 devices in the van at a time and I get well over 200gb at least 3 months out of the year. I refuse to give up my unlimited!

Usually I use between 4 & 6. Last month I tried to use more & made it up to 16. That required a lot of streaming on LTE.

I have averaged 60+ a month for the past several years. Only ever got one letter saying, "hey, we are watching you."
