Application Problems! - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So since a couple of days ago I can no longer use applications like vine or snapchat on my 3G connection it only works on WiFi. It's the same with every ROM I install except for when I restore back to my stock backup. I have tried clean installs using ROMs like omni, cm11 and slimkat, all the same results. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Do I understand correctly that the apps do work on 3G on the stock ROM?
Oh, and for future reference, you're supposed to wait 24 hours before bumping.

Might have set a limit on usage through settings.
Settings > Mobile Data
See if you've set a limit. If it ain't that, I dunno what it is... Just a suggestion. Happened to me and drove me insane!
And yeh, wait 24 hrs before bumping

Unable to send MMS (consistently)

Hi all. I recently rooted my phone and installed a Liquid Smooth Cyanomod version of Jelly Bean (4.1.3 I believe) and have been unable to properly send MMS texts since. I can send to myself and receive almost instantly but the best arrival time I've received so far is 7 minutes, with another at over 90 and most of them being sent from my phone but not ever arriving at the target phones. I'm with Rogers and have attempted several different APN layouts without success. I've searched everywhere but am unfortunately unable to post my findings thus far. If you have a set up that is proven to work for you or even just speculate at an answer please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

Merely speculating here..
I would have guessed it was an APN or network issue.. But it seems you have tested those variables. Liquid is 4.1.2..
Nothing against any ROM (no bias), but have you tried a different ROM to see if the problem is just in liquid?
Have you tried to reinstall the ROM by Full wiping? Did you install the ROM or update with a Full wipe?
Have you tried wiping caches in recovery, or clearing data from the messaging app?
Make sure and backup messages before making changes (just in case). I use sms backup/restore.
- last, are you using the stock messaging app? MMS can have issues through third party sms apps. I had issues with Go sms (nothing against the app)
I am currently downloading a new nightly to try on his ROM. Have not tried another as I'm terrified to bricking this phone that I've only had for a week. I keep playing around with the APNs and have perfect LTE and 3G coverage otherwise. I am only using the stock SMS/MMS app.
Currently having difficulties just getting the nightly onto my phone, even.

Alright. I wiped everything. Did a reset. Installed the nightly CM 10 release and fired of one MMS. It arrived within 7 minutes. Tied for best so far, really, but why am I not doing better?

It's good to see a user that isn't over confident. My first time I made the mistake of thinking because I code a lot that it would be cake.. Tripped the flash counter and soft bricked within the first few times flashing. Everyone learns somewhere I guess. Backups are your best friend in this business..
What are your data speeds like in the speedtest app?

Seven minutes is still a drag.. But better than never arriving.
Questions:
are you sending the mms to the same person each time? Same network?
Are you restoring data with your apps?
What happens when you send an mms to yourself?
Does your APN have the mms proxy, mms port and apn type set correctly?
Just sent a picture to my gfs iphone and it took 6 seconds, flat.. On the default APN with AOKP Build 5.
an answer usually lies in the individual actions of each person. Too bad there isn't one general answer to things lol.. If there was, I'd be a jedi.
Reflashed about 6 times in the last 24 hours due to a GApps issue. Got everything running and still the fastest delivery is about 6 minutes. That is the best recorded time for that person. Other receivers either just don't get the mms or it takes overnight
Ran a test with the speedtest.net app and got ~4.5 down and 0.45 up. The apn has everything set up according to the Liquid Smooth 4.1.2 ROM as it is what I had to flash back to due to the GApps, wifi and camera issues. APN settings seem to be up to Rogers par...
I'm not restoring any data, starting completely from scratch. And when i send to myself it arrives within seconds. And the proxy, port and apn seem to be fine...
I'm not gifted in this field but have always had a knack for it and two years ago took a college course on programming which had a heavy emphasis on Linux OSs.
Sent from my SGH-I957R using xda app-developers app
Repeated testing has yielded about 6 MB/s up and 1.5 down. Still no consistent MMS though...

[Q] Wifi Drop

I have a rooted Nexus5 which aint running any custom rom. I have noticed that my wifi drops . the icon shows active on the status bar but there is no data transfer.
i thought it could be one of the xposed modules which might be interfering so i unrooted my phone and put it back to stock. The wifi signals were fine for a day or so and i am now facing the same problem again.
I downloaded the Wifi Analyser app from the play store to check if there is any interference from other routers in the vicinity. I have changed the channels multiple times but to no avail. At the same time my laptop & desktop connects fine to the router.
I am currently running stock 4.4.2 build # KOT49H

Try an app called "Root- Push Notifications Fixer". There are two versions one that requires a rooted device and one that does not I use the rooted one and off hand cannot remember the difference. Below is the playstore link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andqlimax.pushfixer&hl=en
This app resolved a WiFi issue I was having. I originally blamed my router/device but it was neither. I use it on both my Nexus 5 and 10. Read the app description for the issue it addresses.
Good luck.

I had something similar on my Nexus 5. The wifi speed would drop dramatically at random and it looked like web pages had stopped loading. My connection is 25Mb but the N5 would drop to 1-2Mb. I'd then have to turn wifi off and on to get the speed back up.
After searching around for the same issue a few people suggested turning off mobile data while using wifi. After doing this the speed has never dropped. I've since set up a Tasker profile to turn mobile data off when connected to wifi and back on when wifi is out of range/off.
Might be worth a try.
Its helping mate . will try it for a day or two to see how it works .

guys , looks like i have finally sorted the problem. I called my ISP and he suggested that it could be a looping issue with the router. He advised a hard reset which i have done now. i can now connect to wifi with my phones
sometime my Wi-Fi lost data even the connection is still on. I'm using Franco kernel r32. I don't know how to fix it. Can anyone help me to solve this problem?

Unknown error code during application install: -24

Hello everyone,
I always follow this rule when I buy a new device. I use the stock rom/kernel without root for the first 2-3 weeks just so that there's no hardware error popping up and also because I want to have that clean stock experience with each device I own. After I feel the time is right, I root it and then keep on flashing every now and then. So ATM, I'm fully stock!
I've been experiencing this particular problem/error while installing apps from the Play Store : Unknown error code during application install: -24
I have faced this error 3 times till now and sadly all of them have popped up while installing "PAID" apps.
Till now it has occurred with
1. Nova Launcher Prime
2. WiFi File Transfer Pro
3. Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour
SS: http://www.vinu.info/f/u/24Screenshot_2014-03-06-20-30-47.png
I couldn't even get a refund on the first two apps as the 15 minutes window had passed while I was searching for a fix. I like to support the devs but this is really irritating!
I've literally searched for hours finding a solution for this and the only thing which I get is : FACTORY RESET.
If you're rooted, then you can delete the package from /data/app/ or /data/data/ and solve it within few seconds. However, if you're unrooted, you're only left with Factory Reset.
I am currently on ART and I have tried shifting to dalvic but that doesn't solve the problem. I was using a HTC One X (4.2.2) previously and I have never faced this problem even once. So I'm beginning to think it's a KitKat related issue?
I have already performed a factory reset twice and I really don't find it a viable option now. I guess it's time to root now and begin flashing!? :cyclops:
If you guys have any info/solution regarding this problem, please share!
Thank you for your time!
It happens randomly. Have you tried deleting your Google account and adding it back? Fixes it for me every time this happens (and it's not a KitKat related issue)

Thanks for the suggestion. However, it didn't solve the issue.
I know it happens randomly and I may have been extremely unlucky to face this issue 3 times in a month!
PS: There are tons of people who don't root their phones, so each time something like this happens we have to wipe it completely?
It seems to me doing a wipe is your only option :/

Orange Network Bars! HELP

I decided to root my handset yesterday, all went well and that handset has been rooted successfully. I've kept it entirely stock, no ROM or kernels. I am experiencing what seems to be a connectivity issue. If I connect to WiFi my signal bars turn white, indicating a connection to the Google servers however, when I disconnect my signal bars turn orange.....full HSDPA signal but are orange.....stranger still that I am actually able to connect to the internet with no issues. I've searched and people are saying that the orange signal bars indicate no connection to Google servers and in turn this means no internet connection? Does anybody know of a fix or have an explanation? All was well before I rooted and unlocked the boot loader.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Rooting can't cause this. Can you receive gmail?
That's exactly what I thought! I've rooted handsets before and never had an issue connecting to Google servers etc. Yeah I can receive gmail, but I need to do it manually, it doesn't seem to be pushed through like before. I thought at first it was an issue with the APN but I've checked and reset it to default, still getting these damn orange bars. The arrows at the side suggest I am sending/receiving data though......I've attached a PIC.

I thought the orange bars there indicate that you're roaming.
Orange bars means that its not connected to Google servers.

Orange means you are not connected to the internet.
Try reset your wireless router/setting.

Orange bars means that you are not connected to Google servers and cant receive notifications, it does not necessarily mean that you are not connected to the internet.
Try doing a factory reset.
go to accounts
remove your google account
once u do it may ask to enter a backup account
re enter your google credentials
reboot

If Chaco81's solution works, please let me know.
As several others have mentioned to you, it means you are not connected to Google services. This happens to me randomly, and I have yet to find a solution. Sometimes I just wait it out, and it magically starts working again after a few minutes. Sometimes I reboot, and that seems to work 75% of the time, but because it isn't 100%, it makes me think it's no different than waiting it out, it just makes me feel like I'm doing something. This has happened to me on various ROMs (including stock) on my Nexus 4, Moto X, and Nexus 5. It is very frustrating, and I can't seem to locate a cause or a fool-proof solution other than waiting.
EDIT

I highly discourage doing a factory reset for this problem, especially if you have no backup program like Helium or Titanium. I have never had to do a factory reset for this problem to correct itself, and seeing as it happens to me randomly no matter the device or ROM (and I always do a full wipe moving between ROMS), I do not think this is actually a solution. I think this is just like what I consider rebooting, it doesn't fix the problem, it just adds time in between the problem starting and the problem stopping naturally. Even if it is a 100% sure-fire fix, it will take much longer to reset and fix everything back to how you want it than to just wait it out.

Easiest way to fix it is to get on a WiFi connection. Once it connects to WiFi Google will sync and then turn off WiFi and you will have white bars. This tends to happen to me when my data coverage is low and speeds are down. I don't think the slow speed is able to reach Google servers thru the downlink. Just my thought but I have no clue.

From the look of your notification shade, you are obviously not using the stock ROM. What else has been done to your device?
Without more info on your phone, its tough to give solutions.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
It is completely stock ROM with xposed and gravitybox installed. Apart from that, its pure stock. Even at that the only things I have activated with gravitybox is the notification shade and circle battery mod. Nothing has been touched in way of kernels, radios, WiFi, telephony tweaks etc. Really don't fancy having to reset my device entirely, thanks for the suggestion but I'm not planning on restoring it back and setting it up all over again. As for the WiFi suggestion, it worked for 3min 27sec (yes I timed it) but then, low and behold, the orange bars were back. I've been reading on some Google forums that its an issue in 4.4.2 but it was working fine prior to me rooting. I even put it in to safe mode to see if it was an installed app that was affecting it but that turned up nothing.

^ OK thanks for clarifying. There are many potential reasons for this issue, so it is hard to track down.
Do you have other android devices? Do those work without issue, in your area, over your cellular connection?
If so, the problem isnt related to your Google account, or your cellular carrier, and must be device related.
If its device related, don't do a factory reset. Instead back up everything you care about and flash a factory image.

The signal actually came back and turned white for the rest of the day. Then it dropped out to orange again. Think I'll hang on to things the way they are right now and persevere with it and hope that 4.4.3 comes with a fix. Thanks.

I'm on T-Mobile UK, well EE, as it's now known. The issue doesn't SEEM to be affecting things but I honestly can't be sure. In saying that I'm having to manually refresh my gmail and Google now notifications aren't displayed as often as before. There seems to be a few posts online about people with similar issues so there's every chance it is a DNS issue.

yeah, Im running CM11 and stock 4.4.2 rooted, unlocked and with run time ART on N7 and N5. I see this on both ROMs. On stock the icons turns orange for cell and wifi. But on CM11 the wifi icon would change to have a line running through it. I think its the same but with different icons. Both would act the same but both seems to have no advert effect for me tho.

Constant SMS Failed to send after 4.4.3 Update?

Hey guys,
For about two days now, ever since I updated my Nexus 5 (running on T-Mobile) to 4.4.3 using the OTA, Google Hangouts is failing to send texts in phases. For one hour or so it'll fail every other text until I resend it, then after that it works for a few hours again perfectly fine, then back to failing some.
I'm going to try using Evolve SMS for a bit to see if it happens there, but something tells me this isn't Hangouts' fault.
I am rooted and have a custom recovery, but it's been that way for months (Before 4.4.3 update) and I doubt would affect it.
Thanks,
David
Try cheating the cache in hangouts. If that doesn't work uninstall it, reboot, and then reinstall it from play store

I'll do that, I just cleared my cache/dalvik too. Unfortunately Hangouts is hardwired into stock so I can only uninstall updates, but if it acts up again I'll try that.

I do, although I'll use that as a last resort at the moment haha. Still think it's a more widespread-than hangouts problem.

I think it was with T-Mo in my area. My friend was on Nexus 5 stock 4.4.2 and having the problem, it's since gone.
Tldr: Issue resolved itself, was likely T-Mobile's side
