Video stabilisation weirdness - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anybody else noticed the weird behavior of the optical stabilization?
For example you can check it here at approx 0:23 to .... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX391Y-_TtA
I tried to record video while driving and the N5 was in a holder mounted on the dashboard. Well that didn't work out at all. My image looked 'waved'
I'd rather have it turned off but probably that is not possible.

That looks like it keeps focusing over and over. And if you record video in a car on a mount like I do. You can't have music on, it makes the ois freak out with vibration.

You are not alone. Mine is exactly the same. I don't have a sample but when my car is moving the video is wobbly and distorted. It is just horrible. I have not been able to do anything about it.
I have tried different apps, but I do prefer AutoGuard. I've tried different mounts, different focus settings, I've tried making sure that the dash is not in view of the lens, I've tried different resolutions, everything I can think of.
I think it is a combination of the auto-focus and video stabilization via sensors.
I have actually decided to not use this phone for gps & black box because of how distorted the video is.
It's really too bad because it is a great device.

Yup, same thing here. I own a multitude of Android phones and none is like this.
We would blame the auto-focus and the stabilization, but the weird thing is that it looks some kind of foil is moving in a wave form, like you when you touch perfectly standing still water. so it is not the complete image that goes wobbly but only part of it. At first when I recorded in the street it looked like one of those 'your video looks .... shall we stabilize it' on youtube. If you then check how some moving parts look like, well leave the image like it is.
I will try to record from my car one of these days and post it here. Find it really strange that everyone raves about this optical stabilization and only a couple see this seriously bad things happening.

What it reminds me of, keep in mind I'm almost 40, is playing with the tracking on a vcr.
I took some video while walking and it is actually really good compared to some other devices but I don't think the powers that be tested it while the device was moving at the rate of speed we're trying.
The only suggestion that I can think of that I haven't tried is either disabling or reducing the sensitivity of the motion sensors. I'm not even sure how that would be accomplished, kernel or platform.

Haha, older than you. 43.
Well I did record video on the way home. This is quality wise bad but it shows perfectly what I (and you) mean.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7grCi0lpPw&feature=youtu.be
I can assure my dashboard is rigid and the road, well a solid road.
Lol while copy/pasting I read this on the file I just uploaded 'We hebben vastgesteld dat je video mogelijk schokkerig is. Wil je dat we de video stabiliseren?' which ... means we've noticed the video is shaky do you want to stabilize the video.
Just plain bad and unacceptable

Let's hope it's on Google's to-do list.

Impossible app! Is it true?

i've seen this video on italian blog...in the attachment there is the app but i can' t try it..i ve wm6....is it true??
http://www.wmfans.net/?p=40
It's not true. It's a video and the phone holder just has the timing down. There was another video like this with the X-ray and also had a coca-cola video that tipped like a glass as if you could drink from your phone
you must be kidding that you believed it for a second. it is just recorded. to do that, YOU NEED AN X-RAY MACHINE.
are you sure it is a video? there is an installer app
I didnt even both to watch the video.
But I can tell you that if you remove the IR filter from any webcam / camera you can see through some opaque or dark items. This includes a bottle of coca-cola, and even some clothes. (SONY had to recall a lot of cam corders because the night mode allowed you to see through white shirts in the day time, ie. girls shirts.)
There are a ton of tutorial videos online how to remove these filters. The last one I watched was on Hak.5
It is a definte FAKE. The guys' bone structure and adipose tissues does not match the Xray screen viewer. Definitely FAKE.
Maybe you don't include that camera isn't located in the center of screen. But I haven't tested it, I don't know is it real.

Capellone85, where the heck sei andato a pescarla, questa?
IT Fake
Its Fake Some People Actualy Fall IT its a swf flash file haha.
the timing on the movement is out and the bone structure as mentioned was way off
It is probably a video file being played.. i have seen another one pretty well done with a little girl.. almost had be thinking it could be real but then my common sense kicked in
I have one a bit like that on my PDA. Not quite as sophisticated but still impresses people for about half a second till they figure it out.
Got it from here: http://freewareppc.com/misc/xray.shtml
edit: just noticed that post #7 has the actual one from the video
here is a whole bunch of such apps
http://www.youtube.com/mobiletricks
thx so much for answer
I have used this one a long before, its just a video that runs, & u have to adjust the movement like wise.

The drink ones work on some devices like the HTC diamond, iphone, n95 and many others due to the the built in Accelerometer.
The xray as stated above is a flash vid but looks good if you time it right.
had my daughter believing my touch was an uber fone for weeks with that xray
Look at the guys left hand. It looks like he has this mapped to the button his thumb is on. Right before it moves, it looks like there's more stress as if he's pushing the button

What's with Auto Brightness?

I had the GS2 for a few days and then returned it for the GS2SR. Both seem to have very finicky auto brightness. Can anyone else confirm this or did I have two bad phones in a row? My previous phone was the Nexus S and its light sensor worked flawlessly.
Also, can't seem to take great pics yet. Any suggestions on the best camera settings or is it just because I also own an iPhone 4s and am used to that camera?
thanks
Lol for one it takes great photos 8mp and 1080p video. For two yes auto brightness is a pain on the skyrocket and the other sgs2 i dontt use it. I uncheck it
And three used to the iphone 4s camera would mean you were used to an inferior camera on a phone that is nothing more then a glorified app launcher. Launcher pro app pretty much sums up the capabilities of the ios. But maby you got a faulty device it does happen. I have taken very many photos and videos on the sgs2 and the akyrocket and i have to say very happy with the reasults from both. Mabye go too att have them exchange it if it seams like its having issues.
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, 8MP and 1080P are just specs, not real world. My Nexus S out of the box took much better pics. And as for the iPhone, I won't even go there as some people are precharged to hate one platform or the other it's not even worth discussing. I actually love both platforms and look forward to switching back and forth regularly. I'm going to play with the camera settings and see what I can improve with my Skyrocket.
As for the auto brightness issue, I actually found my solution in another thread. Just unchecked "Auto adjust screen power" in display settings and leave auto brightness checked. Works perfectly now! No issues in the last 12 hrs.
It is not specific to this phone, the Android auto brightness algorithm is crap. With every Android I've owned I tried to give it a chance, but alas, they don't seem to realize that in pitch darkness the screen needs to be an minimum power and in direct sunlight it needs to be maxed out.
Thanks for that. I feel a little better now. I was actually just logging back on to say to forget my earlier response that i fixed it. It's still very wonky. But I'm glad to know it's not the phone. Going back to turning it off all together.
Funny thing is that the first early impressions I read of the Galaxy Nexus today included a complaint that the auto brightness feature is really flaky.... Wild, wild stuff.
I developed some software to replace the stock auto-brightness.

Regarding pictures and image quality - you can take some amazing photo's but you have to mess with settings (which its got a bunch of, more in line with a proper camera). But, if you're not a savvy photog - the auto, point and shoot will give you some crap photos.
I'm finding issues with the auto brightness and auto adjust too. Tried turning off the latter and still found it cranking down too readily, to the point I thought the camera was taking dark pictures. Turned both auto functions off and it seems better. Camera pictures now don't seem like they were taken with an ineffective flash, viewing the pictures on lowered brightness seems too have been the issue.

Is my nexus 5 camera broken?

My nexus camera seems to be broken. The lens constantly moves and shifts around, making non stop clicking. I can't take videos because doing a simple pan results in a shakey video that jumps up down or shakes sideways.
Has anyone else experienced this with their nexus? Is this a hardware problem or the camera focus issue people are talking about? Because this is really bad, worse than just getting unfocused photos..
Edit: I'm thinking my image stabilization is picking up wrong input and trying to correct the lens for no reason resulting in the constant shifting.
From my understanding IS is either working or not, so if the OIS controller was broken I'd get no image stabilization, so it could be software (not just the camera app, something in the internals of the system)
Does anyone have an idea what is wrong and how to fix this?
Is the cell repair shop using oem products to replace?

[Q] Pictures foggy with flash

Got my Z3 a couple of days ago (wife as well) and when either of us take a picture in an indoor, low light situation the picture is always foggy looking. In fact, even in very low light if the flash goes off, the picture is foggy looking. Anyone else experience this or have any thoughts? Really irritating. Pictures are great looking if no flash though (on both phones).
Yep, same here and tried everything...this camera is why I bought it, and it sucks compared to my Lumia 920

I haven't used flash yet but I read somewhere that manual mode reduces this fog effect. i'm guessing it's some sort of lens flare? Try playing with the different scene modes and settings.
Same issue with mine. Been working all week on it and cannot get a good picture inside
Same, swapped first one out only to find this has the same issue, thought i was the only one

Need some examples, really. Are you using a case on your phone? Try without. Try a few different modes (auto, manual etc) and see if there's a pattern.
Manual mode and changing iso up seems to allow for better pics.
Sent from my D6603 using XDA Free mobile app
Yes same problem already talked about in depth, try manual mode, keep the ISO as low as possible with the flash, in fact if the object is more than 5m away, then the flash will not really do much, turn it off and increase the ISO
I had the same Problem, and after testing if it was the case or the Glascover, because sometimes the
Pics were foggy and sometimes not.
Some of the Glas Cover makes Reflextions on to the Lens but the worse
are the Fingers on the left Side of the Phone, when you make pics in landscape.
The Finger on the left Top makes so many Reflections to the lens that the Imgages becomes
foggy.
When you make a Pic and hold the Phone in the middle, than all the Pics with Flash are good,
You can test it by yourself in Automodus or Manuell.

Same issue
Has anyone managed to find a workaround for this??
I'm having the same issue and not sure what to do.
Thanks,

Is the camera motor supposed to sound like this?

I received my phone today, and while I'm generally quite happy with it, there's one thing that really bugs me; the camera motor is really, really loud while the sensor is moving. Could I please ask anyone who has the phone to confirm whether it's supposed to sound like this?
I've shot a video from another phone to try and capture the sound it makes here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/2HVQRVtiQVjEGnBk6
I moved the module manually by pressing and holding the camera switch button and moving up and down, but it also makes quite a bit of noise when just pressing it as well.
It's also very noticeable when capturing a video from the device itself: https://photos.app.goo.gl/1cQmbBMFjHEtnNfy5
Like above I moved the sensor manually, but I suspect things like motion tracking won't work very well due to it capturing the audio of the motor.
Wow, thanks for letting us hear what it sounds like. Helps me as I start to collect various "issues" from other end users.

They sound like sound effects used for alien invasion type of movies .
Hmm hope by the time it is released on the US it doesnt have most of the issues happening
yeah i had been using it the past month and noticed the same. There is a Flip Camera sound feature in the options but didnt seem to make a difference on my end.

Faulty unit
So I spoke with Asus support, and according to them these noises are completely normal, so yeah, I don't know. Because of this I've now returned it to the shop I bought it from as this really was a deal-breaker for me.

Thanks for the link! That does sound far more acceptable. I had a look at a few video reviews before ordering it, and none of them mentioned anything about the noises my unit had - that's why I was curious if anyone else was experiencing the same thing. But it definitely sounds like my unit was faulty, and that it shouldn't sound nearly as bad as it did.
I bet ASUS never actually bothered to watch/listen to the videos I sent them and instead just said it's normal and hoped I wouldn't mind.

Hello, my flip camera also has weird sound (alien) when I adjust the position using volume keys. However, I think that this is normal due to the motorized mechanisms.
Edit: I looked at your video and my unit has the same sound.
Just bought a used ZF6, my camera motor has the same loud Noises as the OP in videos.
It's when they stop making sounds that you need to worry...
