The perfect phone - General Topics

I'm still using my good old galaxy s3 right now and I'm asking myself why I can't find a replacement phone that suits my needs.. Every phone out there I have some sort of issue with. I like the LG g2, but I hate the buttons on the back. I like the nexus 5 but I hate that there isn't an SD card slot. Some of the newer samsung phones come close, but I don't want Knox or any of that garbage bs or a locked bootloader.
I guess my perfect phone would be a nexus 5 with an SD card slot and a slightly better camera. Or an LG g2 with buttons on the side instead of back. Sony makes some nice phones hardware wise but I hate the look of them. When will someone release a phone with
5-5.2 inch screen
SD card slot
13+ mp camera
Buttons on the side instead of the back
Unlocked bootloader
This is where that Lego concept of building phones would be nice. Hopefully Google stays on top of that and moves forward with it.

There is no such thing, that's why there are so much options in market.

Nothing is perfect , every phone has upside and downside aspect

no one can in this world can earn the title of "Perfect" or a thing (except game with says "perfect" sentence)
every technology in this world always have progression that human being invented (not sure if alien exist)

there is no))) as many people as many minds

I mean, I know you said you had the look of the Sony phones, but take the Xperia ZL:
5-5.2 inch screen? :good:
SD Card slot? :good:
13+ mp camera? :good:
Buttons on side instead of back? :good:
Unlocked bootloader? :good:
All of the features you want are there in a phone like the Xperia ZL, and it doesn't look that bad. The phone you want has been released. Perhaps you should re-consider?

Lol I remember trying the demo of the zl when it was first released. It is a very nice phone and I think the only thing that held me back was the look of it and the price (at the time it was 750$ outright). I'll take a look again to see how much a used one goes for. Thanks

I was able to get a used one for about $285 on swappa. You can get it for $500 new straight from Sony. Good luck in your search!

The Z1 mini is actually more perfect in my opinion. Smaller size, but still has high-end specifications. The larger screen just makes it unhandy. It shouldn't replace the tablets.

Meh, it's a matter of preference and hand-size really. For what the OP listed as the "perfect phone", the ZL is a great match.
Personally, I'm a big fan of the Z Ultra as a tablet replacement. If only it were an inch larger, it would be the perfect 7in tablet.

You're right. Perhaps SG5 / HTC one 2 / LG3 might be an option for him as well. I guess that's the four mobiles he should be consindering and then walk into a store and make his choice.

[DISCUSSION] Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition: Confirmed.

Available from Play in a 16GB variant compatible with ATT/TMobile with LTE support, bootloader unlocked, running stock Android 4.2.2 with direct updates from Google just like the Nexus line.
June 26th is the date. $649 is the price.

Yes it will have a micro sd card as stated in the key note.
And before people ask here. No it will not have any of the so called samsung goodies.
This is completely retarted why would Samsung create a Google edition? Not that's its bad just don't make sense

Seems like HTC is bringing out an Google version of the HTC One as well.

B2t, i would like the Stock version of the S4, but if HTC also releases a stock of their HTC one, then i definitly gonna buy the Stock HTC.
I would totally buy this thing if they had used software keys. Galaxy Nexus II?; sounds better than "Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus Edition" The same goes for HTC except that would be a little harder to name.
Is samsung stuff still there.. according to google version of s4
I was wondering if they would leave the Samsung extras or pull them. I actually really like this move towards offering a plain version of the phone. It's making me really considering leaving Vz.

Guys, are you serious? This is just what EVERYBODY wanted for years...now the realization has just begun! Pure Android, micro SD, good cam, a "normal" manufacturer without nexus handcuffs...man, this is just great! I don´t know if I really will switch within the next few weeks or months, but this is the first step in the IDEAL direction!
Just great!

I do like all that screen, I just dont like "moving parts" and wonky button layouts. HTC got it right with the One X and got it wrong with the One, IMO. This GS4 NE is a smart move for Samsung and Google though.

If my note 2 didn't have such good aosp ROM and kernel support I'd ditch it for the S4GE. This is the dream Nexus. Top hardware (mostly) with no bs software. Perfect. Folks will argue for a 32gb version but whatever... As far as price, I think it's right where it should be, that's how much unlocked bleeding edge devices cost.
So what do you guys think about development? Will the devs go for the SGS4 or the SGS4 Google? (Same question for the HTC One)
I think they will go for the Google version for both phones, but that would be stupid for all those guy which bought an SGS4 or HTC One because they expected the devs would focus on these, so i am not sure about that.

As for development I dont see the S4GE selling well when Devs can get the same thing for far cheaper up front.

Sorry, had been wrong on the first point. Will the S4GE be as open as the Nexus devices are or is it just a S4 with Stock Android, did not get that point.
So I'm thinking of buying an S4 next week (on contract from Three), do you guys think I'll be able to install Google's own ROM when they release it?
Or will I actually have to buy Google's S4 edition?
This is going to be the best of both worlds!!!
What I always hated about Samsung phones? Software!
Sloppy bloat- and crap-ware, late updates (sometimes as much as 1.5 year late btw),etc.
What I don't like about nexus? Limited hardware!
Chopped off sdcard, no apt-x, etc.
So this is going to be the mix of what I like about both.
Or maybe I wish it would be... Unless G chops off the sd slot last second or S would stick some piece of crap in the midst of pure android!
Or well, I won't buy it then ... again ...

Thinking of replacing my samsung note 2

I have sold my s3 and got a note 2 since december from last year.
The reason i bought such a huge phone was for the s pen. It helped me in college for taking notes, but then ive bought an ipad which can work for the same purpose, except without the s pen.
Nowadays im just not finding the note 2 practical for everyday usage. Its just too big.
So now im Thinking of selling it and either buying either an s4, htc one or xperia z.
Can someone give me feedback on those phones?
I love the design of sony phones, but i also cant live without the features of samsung phones

I can't think of any reason the s4 wouldn't be a good choice.
I would recommend the HTC one. Reason why is because you're coming from a note 2 which is pretty much the same as an S4 minus a couple of features and the 1080p display. The Xperia Z would be a very bad choice as it has sub par battery life, lags and the display is really a letdown. The HTC one stands out with is fantastic display, it's flawless performance, the amazing boomsound, the phone looks beautiful and dev support is excellent.
At the end of the day everything is a matter of preference but do yourself a favor, whatever phone you choose make sure it's between the S4 or HTC one, the XZ is really not that good. I wanted to also recommend the optimus G pro but you said you want something smaller. Cheers.

Neither the HTC One or S4. If you are thinking of getting a phone for long term, you would be better of waiting for a Snapdragon 800 CPU phone to be released soon instead of getting a Snapdragon 600 S4 or One.
i'll earn money to buy it
Do you require the use of a MicroSD? If the answer is yes, then you can forget about the HTC One. (Say all you want about how it has 64GB internal storage. MTP is so horrendously slow and unstable that copying a 3GB Bluray file simply doesn't work.)
If you can, wait for September. The IFA will be hosted early september, and many will be announing their new phones there. Most are switching to an S800, which is more powerful.
If you can't wait, I'd suggest going with the S4.
Im not really in a big hurry, but what new flag ships are rumored to be shown?
Since you really like S Pen feature. Galaxy S4 should be your choice.

Losing faith in the brands. ?

I am starting to loose faith in the brands to produce a phone that's both of a high quality and runs well. I own 3 flagships. (As you can see in my signature.) Today I have almost lost faith as I put each device side by side. The nexus 5 I have already had to return due to screen issues, and the Z1 instantly seems like a fingerprint magnet, lets not even mention the anti shatter film and the yellow tints. Finally the one device I can't keep my hands off, the note 3 - is amazing - but why is such an expensive phone made so cheaply? I thought the metal bezel would be stainless steel, or some cheap form of metal, but sprayed on chrome know to chip and scratch easily? This is a phone worth over £500... The price of a car.. What was Samsung thinking? Now I know everyone has different tastes, and some of the problems I've mentioned won't bother others... But can someone please point me in the direction of a company that makes QUALITY products. I don't care about price... I need a phone that just works....
Proud owner of Z1, Nexus 5 & Note 3 Sent using XDA Premium.
I will credit the Nexus 5 with being the best of the 3 IMO. Minus the screen problems, the dead pixels and the noise cancelling feature cancelling my own voice its quite good...
Proud owner of Z1, Nexus 5 & Note 3 Sent using XDA Premium.
Well Apple makes GREAT products. I had been an iPhone user from the 3g up to the 5. They make great quality phones as far as build. Even the plastic 3g was a nice sturdy build. But unfortunately their OS is to locked down and boring for someone who is majorly tech savvy like myself. Which is why I took my 5 back and got the Note 2. It's cheaply made but does everything I need and then some. The iPhone couldn't.
The problem I've noticed with Android phones is you can get a nice sturdy build with a nice look (like the HTC One) but the version of the OS sucks because the manufacturer or the provider or both. Or your forced to be stuck on a crappy version of ICS or JB with no chance to upgrade.
If your looking for a phone that just works with a great quality build. And don't care about customization and certain features you would get with Android, like keyboard swiping for instance, the iPhone is a great phone.

Thank you DedZed, most people would have had a go at me and been defensive of their devices but thank you for being honest and offering advise. When you've spent over £1200/$1959 on 3 phones that don't quite work to my expectation's you can imagine how frustrated I am :/

Oh I hear ya~!! I unfortunately at one time was one of those guys. Major Apple fan. I would say go to your local Apple dealer or provider and play with the iPhone and ask any questions you may have about the device. That way you're not wasting money if you don't like it.

You can't update your HTC One? What are you talking about? As far as quality build phone goes I'm VERY VERY VERY satisfied with my Galaxy S3 LTE (Black edition). It droped face-up, face-down, I'm constantly playing with it, keep it in pocket with Zippo (Guilty) and stuff...and it hasn't got a scratch on the places that matter (The back cover is easily replaceable, tho the new one wont have the LTE logo on it)....Even though I'm thinking about replacing it with black S4 (just because of the wider display and camera), this phone is a warm recommendation from me.

One of the features of 4.3 allows you to move apps to your sd card and run them from there so if you have an sd card you could do that. Or if you don't you get a 64gb one from Amazon for around $40.
The S3 is still a great phone but with the added features and faster processor makes the S4 a great upgrade candidate.
Also if your extending your carrier contract you would get the S5 for $200 minus trade in of your S3. As long as the carrier sticks to what they've done previously that is.

My wife has a note 3 which I have obviously seen but haven't played with it much. The sound quality on the LG seems as good, if not better than the note and perhaps a little louder.
The screen...... the note 3 has a beautiful screen but IMHO I prefare the more natural colours of the pro 2 and, of course the screen is slightly larger which, when streaming movies etc, looks considerably larger as it is slightly wider and loses the on screen buttons.
As for the camera, both seem excellent but I do not have the knowledge to assess this on a technical level.
Personally, I prefare the pro 2 over the note 3 ......perhaps I'm a little biased as I own one and not the other.

I much prefer the G Pro 2 to the Note 3, I didn't have the Note 3 long because of the lag in the Touchwiz UI. The buttons being on the rear of the G Pro 2 are so much better. Notification lights front and rear, the 5.9" screen is fantastic. My only advice would be a 32gb model as the apps lag a little if run from a Micro SD card. The camera is superb and the sound quality great also! Hope this helps.

I had the same thought, but in reality, I won't be happy unless there's development going on, and right now, we have no custom recovery, no custom ROMs, and no sources to build from. This is an incredibly amazing device and a great value for the money, but sadly, I doubt it would be a good option if one wishes to keep up with Android.

I think he's trying to say that the Root method by that one dude and GEOHOTZ(PS3, iPhone), will work for this phone. Which I'm pretty sure is incorrect because it will only DEFINITELY Root phones made before June 13th, 2013. Lol. Yeah that's ironic. It's on the XDA Portal page.
I do not recommend getting this device. It literally is something LG decided(from the looks of it), to just release just so they can say they have a phone bigger than others. I really advise against getting this phone. Get a G3 or just keep your Note 3. Besides, this phone is a complete downgrade from a Note 3. And I don't mean specs. What's the point of having all these specs if you can't utilize them as a flashaholic?!

Exactly.
Thank you very much for your response.
You can root it via towel root, the same method as the s5. For the record, I like my g pro 2 more than my note 3, to each his own.

Nexus 6 64gb on back order

Ordered one now says backordered....didn't say that before
Before that I was considering the z3 due to band 12 and general awesomeness. Went with n6 due to 64gb and stock android.
But I'm looking into canceling and ordering a z3 instead. Tho IMA miss 64gb not 32x2 like my m8 and the z3 have.
How's the z3 holding up? Battery life camera performance etc

Pretty good camera. Amazing battery. Top end phone so it'll get lollipop update soon. Waterproof is sweet. You can buy a Samsung Evo card (cheaper and better ranked now than Sandisk) and have a ton of storage on external card. Crazy quick. Much sexier.
Friend had a Nexus 6. Finds it too big. Went back to a Nexus 5 believe it or not.
I agree the reason why I went 64gb is thats basically what I'm running on my m8 but since KitKat messed up transferring files to SD card and lollipop didn't help enough lol.
I read rooting it does something to camera?

Unlocking the bootloader kills the DRM keys (for now - until root w/ locked bootloader will be available - only a matter of time).
DRM keys have some algorithms for night shots performance. Long story short. It's complete BS.
I've tried night shots with multiple apps though, and the stock Sony, and the difference is basically nothing in my opinion, especially since I'd slap a person if saw them trying to take a half-important night shot with a phone, if the law allowed slapping of du*b people. Even high performance pocket cameras, like my Canon S110 or the Sony RXiii don't take amazing night shots. In order to use Sony's stock camera app to take fairly good quality night shots, the phone has to be on a tripod... so much for a "mobile phone"
So yeah. I'd go ahead and cancel that order and jump on the Xperia Z3, having had the chance to play with the Nexus 6.
And if you've even considered such a big phone...why not go with the Samsung Note 4? Just saying...
