[Q] Call Mom not working N5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys.
I am running stock 4.4.2 KOT49H
I start google voice search and say
"Call Mum"
It then requests
"Whom do you want to call?"
"Pick contact"
No matter how many times I then choose my mother as the contact to call, it never remembers, and asks me every time.
I have no idea why, anyone?
The same happens when I try "Call Wife" etc...
tx
Mark.

Are they saved in your contacts under those names? I guess your mum might be but 'wife' ?

set you contact as "mom" or "wife". it wont know who it is unless you you set your contacts as such.

If its asking who to call but not asking who is mom, then its likely the service isn't fully working for you (I have the same issue)

Hi
Thanks for the responses... AFAIK, the new feature that came out today is meant to remember any voice name you use, and you assign it to a contact...
The reason why I use wife is that google NEVER gets my wife's name right when I say it. I could change her name to wife and my mother's to mom, but that defeats the purpose of this new feature, so it should work that when I say call xyz, it asks who I mean, then I choose a contact, and next time I say call xyz it calls that contact.
Isnt that what the new feature does? Y2whisper, I thought it was "switched on" on google's servers, and was not something that would be gradually released, like an update to the software?
Tx
Mark.

Fully get what you mean.
When the feature works, you will say call my wife and you will be asked "who is your wife" you pick a contact and it should save.
When it's not working it will simply say "pick a contact" in other words it has no idea what you said so it's asking you to choose.
I'm not sure how it's being implemented. I think it's US only but there are others claiming they have it working. Even here in Canada.
I am set to US English still a no go

Hey there,
Yeah, almost... when I say "call mom" it types "call mom" in the search field, so it does know what I said, but still asks me to pick a contact/Whom do you want to call... and does that again and again.
Odd.

Yup that's what it does for me which shows me the feature isn't working.

That's the problem, you pick a contact and try it again and it still asks Who's Mom!
Once you pick a contact it should save that information and then be able to dial it again easily.

Yeah for those that have that problem, I would assume Google has some kinks to work out.

How about uninstalling/re-installing the Play Services update, and clearing data of Google Search?

That one I tried to no avail
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk

Remove/re-add Google account?

Thought was just me. Can't get my dear mom assigned either. Tried everything.

What happened between Google and mom ? .... hmmm so complicated

Random turn of events call mom just worked (changed nothing) but no other ones worked. So much for dad etc. It even remembered when I asked the second time. So it may not be country limited but it still has its glitches

At first I was having trouble with it but now it works great.

works great this will help in the future
Awesome, thanks! Yeah we caught a bug pretty early on that wasn't intercepting the calls correctly. But that has been fixed and it seems to be working for everyone now
just downloaded and tried this. works like a charm!
Great to hear, thanks!
That's a great idea, I'll buy you a beer if you can add Australian support
I'm sure many others would too.
The server tried redirecting to a invalid address. please report this to the webmaster of the site.
i scanned it on my windows mobile phone doesn't seem to work.
It's only for US?
i see in the website " country 1 " so if is not only for us, where can i choose other countries ? lol
works great! thanks!
Currently the site is only for the US, sorry. I'm actively trying to figure out how to do it for other countries as well.

Could you provide more information on this? What did you do exactly to get this error?
I just tried this app and website just to test it. I put my phone on Silent after installing the app and then tried the website with my Google Voice number (I had my 3G on). I saw it on the screen, and I saw it raise the volume, but even though it had turned the volume up, it never rang.
Might have been quirk.
Just now (10 minutes later) I tried it again after putting it back on silent, this time with my real cell number and it worked, although for a moment it appeared that it might do the same thing.
Regardless, all one would have to do is try it a second time if they didn't find it the first time. Thanks for this!
Works in Canada too!

Hmm, strange. Thanks for the trip report! How long did it ring? Did you have good signal at the time? Also would you mind trying it again to your Google voice number?
Didn't work for me using my Google Voice number. Tried it 3 times and the ringer stayed on vibrate. Guess it has to use the actual number to your phone to work.

[Resolved] Anyone know how to get rid of this icon in my notification bar

For a DroidX (rooted..but that's it):
I randomly got this voicemail icon in my notification bar last week. I've used google voice for years now, and I've never switched back n forth or anything. I deactivated my google voice today to see if i could manually delete it, but I'm goign to have to go through 2+years of voicemails to even get to my new ones i think (for the built in vzw voicemails).
anyway, anyone know an alt solution to this....notice the date on the voicemail too. wtf is that all about?

i sure wish there was. i don't think vzw gives that option, surprisingly. but if they even did, i'm sure they'd charge for it
thx for the reply though
aw i finally got it. for some dumbass reason, i thought all my voicemails were somehow cached on vzw side (ya i know..just realized how stupid that sounds). anyway deactivated gvoice & deleted quite a few voicemails until i got to my new one.
sorry for thread hijackin but i have the exact same problem; except its not with voice mail, its with SMS.
I got it when i bought an SMS-ticket for a bus-ride, thing is i sent an sms to a number and was suposed to get an sms back from another number confirming that i bought the ticket and some serial numbers and stuff in it, but i cant find it in my inbox. Although, i have 1 new sms with a red little 1 like the pic, and i have 1 new SMS in the notification bar thingy up top...
at the moment, i have no idea how to fix this, and i've done some reading but cant find any solution. i only have 2400 sms in my inbox atm which should be quite low and not violate some 9300+ bug or whatever that is...
halp pritty plox.
If you are using a custom rom, you might want to back it up using ClocworksMod and then flash the phone back with with Odin3 to stock rom and see if it fixes the problem...............
Did the voicemail message say "Hai it's me! I've built a time machine and travelled back to 1969 to send you a voicemail!!11!. Kthxbai"?

that'll prolly do it. but ahem, i got no custom rom, got 2.2 official, rooted it, fixed some nice theme, some nice apps etc... so any other guess on how to fix it?
discovered that if i delete the message about gettin an sms in the notification bar up top it actually goes away, but if i then enter my sms inbox that still has a red little icon with a 1 in it and then enter a new sms i get the notification about having the sms that i cant read, and if i try to enter the sms thru the notification bar it just takes me to an empty new sms ... just gets wierder :/....

My google voice doesn't work ...

Ive had it working for almost a year on my captivate.. But all my voice mails go to att vmail.. Went into the setting and made sure it was use google voice. No dice .. uninstalled and re installed more that 5 times no luck.,.
Stock everything /rom and all. only rooted..
I'm wondering if something is going on with Google Voice:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127929
I have been having the above problem for a couple of weeks now. I have tried everything and it still makes me go through setup on every reboot. I also don't think that inbox sync is working even if I don't reboot. I had a message in there today that I didn't see until I opened the app.
Mine seems to sync fine. Opens fine and all. Don't have to setup after reboot.
The problem is its not using Google voice as my voice mail.. But att junk. I tried activating and all. All it does when u call and i don't answer is tell u"call cannot be completed as dialed." and no voice mail att or Google.

You just have to set up your call forwarding so that it goes to your google voice number. It's not your phone's number. Go here:
https://www.google.com/voice/#phones
Then you will see add phone, and the voicemail setup box that was posted will come up. Just dial the number as you see it from your phone and it sets up call forwarding. It can't all be done from your phone.

[Q] Buying Nexus 5 doubts because of privacy concerns

hi xda!
i am thinking of buying a N5 but the thing that bothers me the most is the BRUTAL changes that google has made to android kitkat.
things like merging sms to hangout and reading all the incoming calls numbers and even if some one is not in your phone list they may show you the caller's name from google database,so they actually track all the calls that you have and save all the sms that you sent or received.
i think that this is TERRIBLE and it really bothers me.
what do you think is there a way to fix this issue?
Who says that that info is ever associated to you?
nobody is forcing you to use those apps. install alternatives. you don't even have to use google play store.

This is called reverse look up. Carriers have been doing this for years and land line providers. It simply matches the number up with known directories of numbers. Its not new and its not related to privacy either

Hi,
Even by just surfing on the web and by posting on a forum and your privacy is (or could be) corrupted, then......
Its more like caller ID. That you have at home. Same thing. Its just applied to mobile now.

Good thing because if my mother knew my porn habits..................
Things could change if people decided not do business with these companies. As far as a constitution that affords you some rights of privacy, it only works if people are proactively fighting for it and not actively hiding under the blankets.
IIRC you are asked if google may use your number for this new "show callers name"-service. You can simply say "no" there. I really don't see any difference in privacy between the N5 and other smartphones. And as some ppl here already mentioned, full privacy is almost impossible in these days unless you are a hermit who lives in a cave or in the woods Did you know for example that the NSA can turn on your microphone or your camera anytime if they want? So pls smile when you look at your phone, somebody may be watching you
Anyone have any good links for privacy for phones and in general?

[App][2.3+] Who's got the funniest phone number? See if you have a cool vanity number

The app is not actually made for checking if you have a cool vanity number ("1-888-PIZZA"), but that's one way of using it
I created the app as a help for finding meaningful names to a given number, making it easier to memorize numbers.
I'll never forget the security code to my car stereo anymore. It's "cake" - (2253)
If you'd like to check it out, or perhaps see if you or your friends have a fun phone number, you can check it out at play store - NameMyNumber.
Hope you give it a try, and hopefully have some fun :fingers-crossed:
Please also remember that you can select different languages for your results. (Settings button)

I actually thought about searching through the contact list. It's just that I'm affraid people would be very sceptic if the app needed access to contact info...
What are your thoughts on that? Would you be OK with it?

Well, thats why you can select a given word, and then again get a new search result. Limiting the new search result based on your previous selection. A sort of "drill down" into the results.
That way you may be able to get 2 or 3 words out of your number.
Numbers containing 0 and 1 in the middle part of the number, tends to provide less good result. Since there are no characters for 0 and 1 on the dial pad.
Did you try to combining one word with others?

From my point of view, it depends on what the app does.
- If I expect an app to make lookups in the contacts. then I'd have no problem with it.
If I don't see why an app would need it, then I agree with you.
Perhaps I'll add a "share via" function that enables the user to send a contact to NameMyNumber.
Any thoughts?

Sure, why not. Although it would be easier for the user to pick from a list within the app...
By the way, I showed the app to my younger brother. The app became quite the laugh amongst his friends at school. They where competing on having the best number
Thanks for the feedback, that's very kind of you
If anyone has some more feedback on the app, I'd love to here it.
If not, I suppose I'll leave it as it is, this strange little app...
And then move on to the next project.

No worries , I should perhaps had an "Tip" splash screen of some sort, informing the user that the results can be selected. I'm sure that if you didn't get it the first time, there are lots of others in the same situation.
